REVIEWLiving by the courseGolf, eat, sleep, repeat. El Gouna, Red SeaFor 30 years now, El Gouna has been showing that Samih Sawiris had a good vision back then when he started his flagship project on the shores of the Red Sea: it has grown into a dream destina-tion – as a home of choice for locals and expats from all over the world, as a holiday destination for sun-seekers and water sports lovers and, last but not least, as a golfing Mecca. A travelogue.

Dear reader,

Imagine a hotel built without boundaries. One that grants access to facilities designed for an entire city, with activities and services to enrich the life of a whole community, and a strong will to preserve the majestic backdrop and natural environment that is home for all this. Now imagine us at the heart of this community. A thriving and ajoyful one. Modern, innovative and cosmopolitan.

That’s what we do. 34 hotels in 3 different continents. Be it a five-star luxury resort or a hip intimate guesthouse; whether for skiing or golfing, in the downtown or on the beach, amidst cultural beauty or overlooking a magnificent marina... We take pridethat the DNA of our hotels remains the same.  The perfect gateway to a delightful, unforgettable, special and multi-dimensional holiday.

This edition of Mosaique is inspired by this very diversity. By constantly illuminating new topics, we want to have the physical openness and accessibility right here on these pages. So Mosaique No.2 is dedicated to the topic of golf. The experience, the venues, the people... We have conversations, hit a few balls and take a little look into the future. The journey leads from Switzerland via Egypt and Oman to Montenegro –a tour de golf that could hardly be more various or inspiring.

We hope you’ll come along with us on this journey, and that you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed filling these pages. Perhaps you’d even like to write down your own thoughts on the subject or questions arise which you would like to have answered. Please contact us.We are always happy to hear from you!

White peaks in front of a bright blue sky reflect in his sunglasses. Taking them off, he reveals well-cultivated laugh lines and an expression, ranging somewhere between deeply relaxed and wildly adventurous. Bernhard Russi – skiing legend, entrepreneur and original ‘Andermattian’ – is a man who radiates unbridled optimism. Never without a project on the go, the 71-year-old constantly sets himself new goals, be it learning a language (Rhaeto-Romanic), designing new alpine racetracks or, most recently, opening his own on-mountain restaurant. President of the GC Andermatt, slope architect and host, columnist, consultant, brand ambassador – Bernhard Russi has never been “just” the professional athlete. On the contrary: he sees himself first and foremost as a family man, then as a passionate nature and mountain lover and last but by no means least, a child of Andermatt, who feels strongly about the fate of the little mountain village, which only recently awoke from deep sleep.

Today, we meet him in his role as president of the 18-hole, PAR 72 Championship Golf Club Andermatt Realp, which is fittingly dubbed the “most alpine golf course in the world”, and to which Russi swings his dynamic swing when the snow gives way to the lush green of mountain meadows in spring. Since the course is currently resting under a thick layer of snow, we are sitting on the terrace of Russi’s recently opened “Wachthuus”, high above Andermatt at 2,283 meters above sea level.

“Basically, it’s still the same village. But it has “dressed up”!

Mr Russi, the mountains we are looking at have always been with you. Apart from a few gondolas, they have hardly changed throughout the years. What about Andermatt? Is it still the same village where little Bernhard stood on his first pair of skis?

BR: Basically, it has remained the same little village. It still has the same soul, the same character. But it has dressed up. Not just cosmetics, but also value-wise.

You’re filling several positions in the village today. What are these and had you always planned to be-come active in town, once your ski racing career ended?

BR: I was always eager to become active at home. Andermatt should have become my place to retreat, rest and enjoy. And while I do enjoy it, I can’t relax as much. As chairman at Andermatt Swiss Alps, I’m able take responsibility, and help to shape things.

When did you discover your passion for golf? Is it your “substitute drug”, when the snow melts in spring?

BR: It certainly was a substitute drug for the top-class sport. I needed results, in order to measure myself. Maybe I also needed something to make me humble. Golf can do that. Now, I can even enjoy this beautiful sport and its surroundings completely unambitiously.

Andermatt Realp is often called the ‘most alpine golf course in the world’. What does that mean? Do golfers need a better fitness here than elsewhere?

BR: Sure, the difference in altitude from the 1st to the 7th tee is 120 metres. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you need a certain level of.. Lately, you even get golf carts in Realp. Golfers who decide to walk, however, will be in better shape shortly!

Andermatt golf course has been designed by the renowned architect Kurt Rossknecht. As an experi-enced designer of alpine racing tracks, have you been part of the process?

BR: I’m not a golf architect. But the collaboration with Kurt was exciting, educational and inspiring. On a hiking tour through the mountains in summer, Kurt and myself once spotted some leftover snow fields. They looked just like sand bunkers on a golf course. That was the clincher for the colour of the sand used on Ander-matt’s course.

Apart from the 18-hole Championship course itself: What awaits golfers – and potentially non-golfing travel companions – in the village? Are there hotels with special offers?

BR: The hotels’ special packages are very versatile and also subject to change. That’s why I always rec-ommend to get in touch directly. Non-golfers can enjoy the sights from the circular hiking route around the course, take in the views and indulge in the ambience of the club restaurant “The Swiss House” with its sun deck.

The region all in all boasts four scenic courses. What makes the special charm of this golf destination?Does it belong on every golfer’s bucket list?

BR: It’s the adjacent mountains, the nature experience, and foremost the clear, fresh air, when the hot days are giving people in the lowlands a hard time. For really ambitious golfers, however, it is also the length gain of about 10 percent due to the lower air resistance that makes it attractive. This golf destina-tion should definitely be on the bucket list.

“This golf destination should definitely be on the bucket list.”

InterviewKlaus Wolfermann – organizer of the

3rd KiO Charity Golf Tournamentin El Gouna 2020

“I want to put myself in the service of people who are less fortunate than myself.”

Two centimetres ahead of someone who was considered practically invincible: Klaus Wolfermann wins the Olympic gold medal in javelin throwing and relegates world record holder Janis Lusis to number 2 – and all this at home in Germany, at the 1972 Summer Games in Munich. What followed, were the world record, the titles “Sportsman of the Year” and “Javelin Thrower of the Century”, the Bavarian Sports Prize, the acceptance into the Hall of Fame...

Long story short: his spectacular Olympic gold medal was not the last success of the exceptional athlete from Altdorf near Nuremberg, but it was certainly the most moving one. In the Museum of Bavarian History in Regensburg, Wolfermann is the only individual athlete from Bavaria to be represented withexhibits including a spear and the gold medal. He ended his sports career after four successful years in the bobsleigh camp before he joined the marketing department of PUMA, a producer of sports equipment.

Despite all this, the “little giant with the golden arm”, as he was also called back then, never took off. On the contrary – he avoids “posh” events whenever possible. He is passionate about sports, but above all he is driven by his mission to serve people who have been less fortunate in life. Thus Klaus Wolfermann, together with his wife Friederike, has been, for the last 14 years, organizing golf tournaments and other sporting events for the KiO-Kinderhilfe organ transplantation, an organization that provides financial support to affected families before and after life-saving operations.

From February 23 to March 1, 2020, the 73-year-old will be swinging his golf club for the fifth time in the magical lagoon city of El Gouna at the shores of the Red Sea. This year he is also organising his third trip with prominent competitors and golf enthusiasts from all over the world. In an interview, he tells us why he chose El Gouna, what drives him, both physically and personally, and where his almost outrageous power and joy come from.

2524

Tell us a little more about KiO. How did you hear about their work?

KW: Through Hartwig Gauder, the Olympic champion in walking, who was implanted with a new heartafter a long wait. For more than 20 years now, he is again actively enjoying life and we are all very grateful for that! Then the association “Sportler für Organspende” (editor’s note: athletes for organ donation) was founded and I was immediately involved. Later KiO was founded and I was approached to organize a golf tournament in order to help raising funds. The first event took place at the GC Pottenstein and since then there have been many... Also, other sports like running and for example a beach volleyball tournament were added.

With “Ancient Sands” and the Steigenberger Championship Courses there are two golf courses in El Gouna. Which one will be hosting the KiO tournament in February?

KW: The tournament is going to take place on the Championship Course, but of course we’ll also play “Ancient Sands”, the highly appealing but completely different new course. We got to explore the holes even before its opening, on horseback with our granddaughter.

To what extent have you been able to support KiO so far? And do you have a desired goal for the tournament in February?

KW: We have generated 3.5 million for KiO in the last few years and hope to continue like that this year. The Orascom Development Group, which has been developing El Gouna for 30 years, built the first hotels and villas and is still the operator of El Gouna, has always been by our side. We would like to express our sincere thanks and hope that this support will continue. For our golf trip to El Gouna in 2020, we hope to be having as much fun with the group as always, since they’ve been supporting KiO for many years. We’d like to bind these people even closer to KiO and thus make the foundation even better known, in order to enable affected children to lead a life worth living.

Now we must return to your javelin throwing career one more time: Are there parallels between the two sports? How did you discover your passion for golf after the end of your first career?

KW: Both, the javelin and the ball, must be placed within a certain zone and that is as far as possible. And it is lovely when both are in the air for a long time. I was invited by ex-sprinter Heinz Fütterer to a tournament at the former Steigenberger Hotel in Lam in the Bavarian Forest, and although I had never held a racket before, I scored surprisingly well. Shortly afterwards the EAGLES Charity Golf Club was founded; since then golf has been an important part of my life.

Last question: Whenever people see you, you seem to beam with energy and joy of life. Will you tell us your secret?

KW: Exercising every day! And having lots of fun in life. I enjoy working with people; and doing good, strengthens my opinion that everyone has a responsibility to help the disadvantaged!

Mr. Wolfermann, with your well-trained stature and healthy tint, you don’t exactly look like a “fair-weather golfer”. Nevertheless: Is it easier to play golf in El Gouna, a city with an average of 10.4 hours of sunshine per day, than in your adopted home of Upper Bavaria? What is the special appeal of the destination in your eyes?

KW: In southern Upper Bavaria we can very rarely play golf during the winter months. In preparation for the season and the many tournaments for KiO, we like to travel to more southern regions, and El Gouna has had us under its spell since our first visit in 2012. The courses in the architecturally beautiful terrain, and the infrastructure - which is not only ideal for golfers - offer everything one could wish for. In addition, there are all these friendly people, making every effort to ensure that your stay is as pleasant as possible. We really feel at home here!

Not only do you organise charity golf tournaments for KiO, like the one coming up in El Gouna; you are also a special ambassador for the Special Olympics, the world’s largest IOC-recognised sports move-ment for people with mental and multiple disabilities. Where does this commitment come from? Was there a specific trigger?

KW: In my birth town Altdorf, where a large home for the disabled is located, I already helped withhandicapped people. Later I visited sports events of the Special Olympics and was so moved by thejoy of the athletes that I decided to become active.

“El Gouna has had us under its spell since our first visit

in 2012.”

Living by the CourseEl Gouna, Red Sea

Golf, eat, sleep, repeat…

It’s mid-January, 9 o’clock in the morning. The sun has taken it’s place in the cloud-less sky, the thermometer is already reading 16 degrees, and the table on the wind-protected Seaview terrace is set with a tempting breakfast. Especially for many Northern Europeans, this alone would be enough to fill in for “Life as it should be” – the slogan that has rightly described El Gouna for 30 years now. But as precious as these moments of complete satisfaction are, at the lagoon city on the shores of the Red Sea, not far from Hurghada, it is absolutely worthwhile to ask for a little more. Especially if a golfer!

It is worthwhile asking for a little more…

For if you enjoy this breakfast in the sun, for example, in front of one of the luxurious apartmentsor villas of the Ancient Sands Resort, you will not only be enjoying the unique view of the Eastern Egyptian mountain range, the Red Sea and the colourful townscape; but you will also practically be standing with one foot on the El Gouna’s new golf course. With its palm-lined fairways, greens and desert roughs, the course designed by Karl Litten adds nine varied holes to the existing 18-hole PAR-72 Championship Course adjacent to the 5-star Steigenberger Golf Resort. Another nine are under development. Ancient Sands is expected to have 18 holes from winter 2021. Then, this course, too, will be the venue for international tournaments.

Sometimes challenging, sometimes very gentle:El Gouna’s golf course beauties As sophisticated as the two desert beauties can be; Ancient Sands designer Karl Litten and the twocreators of the first El Gouna course, Gene Bates and Fred Couples, deliberately had all golfers in mind when they designed the close-to-nature courses with the salt and drought tolerant Seashore Paspalum grass: the beginners and the pros. The comfortable all-round service of the two resorts is also designed to cater for this very range. From the right equipment and the experienced instructor to caddies, training camps and the appropriate catering, everything is taken care of. That even the most beautiful day of golf will be ended by the setting sun at some point is a fact of life, but in Egypt’s little Venice no reason for sadness. Because at this point, the desert pearl with the lively city centre and the chic Abu Tig Marina shows another of its many smiling faces: nightlife. Abu Tig, with its two full-service marinas, has five hotels in all price categories (19 in total), 17 restaurants and bars, and a variety of shops and boutiques to suit all tastes. Here you can also see that Samih Sawiris’ vision of a vibrant city with a colourful local community has been fulfilled with both, the Downtown and the harbour/marina area, which are not only frequented by vacationers, but also permeant residents after work. El Gouna’s “Permanent Residents” – currently about 15,000 inhabitants of various origins – also like to go out and mingle with vacationers and tourists.

It doesn’t always have to be golf...

And what do non-golfers do? Well, they’re spoilt for choice. El Gouna is a vibrant, self-sufficient city with a complete infrastructure and services for really every need from shopping to wellness. For instance, there is watersports in all its facets - above all kitesurfing. Fans of the sport will find one of the best spots in the world here, and the coastline with its colourful reefs and stable dolphin population is an ab-solute dream destination for divers and snorkelers. For the “Gounies” there are kindergartens and schools, a German-Egyptian hotel management school, an ultra-modern hospital with its own pressure chamber and the El Gouna Campus - a spin-off of the TU Berlin. The local library, in turn, is an offshoot of the leg-endary Library of Alexandria. There is a multimedia Culturama, a cinema, an Audimax auditorium, various sports facilities and a diverse calendar of events.

Since especially the younger generation often doesn’t draw such a fine line between work and leisure time anymore, the community recently started to gather in the city’s new Co-Working Space to collaborate on projects - or to fiddle about the permanent relocation to this little paradise at the Red Sea. After all, the current state of things is by no means the end of the story. Even if everything seems to be perfect and visitors are hardly aware of the developments: El Gouna is only 33% completed. In the near future, the opening of another golf hotel is planned, as well as the completion of the conference centre and the new concert hall. The latter will make the lagoon city vibrate all year round with a top-class programme ranging from classical music to pop.

Good news for visitors and residents: El Gouna keeps growing and thriving...

By the way, El Gouna is also a leader when it comes to sustainability. In 2014, it was the first city in the region to receive the UNEP Green Town Award. El Gouna was also a pilot destination for the Green Star Hotel Initiative.El Gouna is setting standards, especially when it comes to recycling. The walkways, for example, are madeof recycled granite and plastic, and waste is meticulously separated everywhere. The “Gounies” get fromA to B by e-bike, among other things.

After all, the city has the first e-bike sharing system in Egypt. A hot tip for all those who like to travel CO2-neutral is the SUP. Thanks to the countless lagoons and winding waterways, almost every corner ofEl Gouna can be reached paddling - be it the nearest spa, the lunch date, the private villa or even the tee time. Of course, this takes a little time, but time is something, people usually have here. Life as it should be, literally.

Oman – a name like a promise. Unlike Dubai or other destinations in the Emirates, the Sultanate looking back on 5000 years of maritime trade still promises the fairytale impressions of the Orient that many globetrotters associate with the Arabian Peninsula. A wonderful insight into this world is provided by the picturesque capital Muscat, where the international airport is located. The port, the magnificent Sultan Qabus Mosque, the old Matrah quarter with its labyrinthine souk and the busy fish market – it is worth taking some time for all this, as it has little in common with the megacities Abu Dhabi or Dubai. But first of all, we continue to Jebel Sifah, the actual destination of our journey.

A merely 40-minute drive outside of Muscat, Jebel Sifah awaits – a blooming oasis between themajestic Hajar Mountains and the turquoise glittering Gulf of Oman. The sustainably designed city with the steadily growing multicultural community is being developed by Muriya, a partnership betweenOrascom Development and Omran, following the successful example of its “big sister” El Gouna on the Egyptian Red Sea coast. With its marina, golf course and various residential areas, Jebel Sifah extends along a five-kilometre long stretch of natural Omani coastline, and over an area of 6.2 million square meters.

Whether you‘re on holiday, staying at the Boutique Hotel Sifawy at the lively marina, in one of the comfortable apartments and villas – which by the way can also be purchased as freehold properties – or on the white sandy beach, in the romantic Eco Beach Camp: Jebel Sifah is designed that all facilities, be it restaurant, golf or beach club, are quickly and easily reached at any time.

Since the main reason for our visit is golf, we first check in at the enchanting Sifawy Boutique Hotel, for its location in the middle of the marina is simply unbeatable, both in terms of golf and evening program. With only 67 rooms, suites and apartments, it also has a very personal, cosy atmosphere. Despite the contemporary style, the character of the property is clearly influenced by the Omani culture and its typical warm hospitality. Apart from that, Sifawy offers everything you need for a thoroughly enjoyable stay – from the restaurant to the pool to the various activities, and even the tee times on Jebel Sifah Golf Course can be reserved.

Speaking of teeing off: Jebel Sifah’s unique desert links course was designed by none other than Peter Harradine, whose design philosophy, contrary to the general trend, focuses on the skills and potentialfun of “average players”. Wide fairways, large greens and the well-metered use of bunkers promise an aesthetically highly appealing golf experience, in which the natural topography offers ideal conditionsfor strategic challenges.

The level of difficulty of the par 36 layout, which can be extended from the front tees up to a championship standard, can easily be increased with greens that offer basic, difficult and very difficult pin positions. Fun Fact: With 678 yards (approx. 620 meters) the Jebel Sifah Golf Course boasts the longest hole in the Middle East. Another feature making the game interesting is the constant sea breeze that often changes direction and is a challenge in terms of club selection and playing strategy. Using second pin flags, Jebel Sifah is also playable as an 18-hole par-72 course. Gorgeous sea views, natural wadis - pebbly creek beds that fill with water during the few but very heavy rains - and the impressive mountain scenery make Harradine Golf’s first beach project an absolute must-play on the Arabian Peninsula. By the way, it is the only one in Oman where you can enjoy mountain and sea views at the same time.

In the evening, like many of the inhabitants of Jebel Sifah, we are drawn to the picturesque marina with its 85 berths and the impressive yachts sailing in and out all year round. A number of lively restaurants and shops make this part of the destination a popular nightlife area, which is also appreciated by the inhabitants of Muscat. The Bank Beach Club - a Mediterranean-inspired open-air restaurant with a lifestyle concept that is unique to Oman - plays a major role in this. A 500-square-meter infinity pool not only offers welcome cooling from the year-round summer temperatures; visitors also indulge in 360° views of the mountains, the breath-taking coast and the marina. Also dives into the intact underwater world of the Oman and other water activities can be undertaken from Jebel Sifah.

Fun Fact: With 678 yards (approx. 620 meters) the Jebel Sifah Golf Course boasts the longest hole in the Middle East.

For those who not only want to see Jebel Sifah itself, but also the really attractive surroundings, you can either go exploring on your own or you can book various tours downtown. As mentioned earlier, for example, a trip to the fairy-tale-city of Muscat is a wonderful way to gain insight into the lifestyle and traditions of the extremely hospitable Omanis. Also, a sundowner cruise out into the glittering blue of the Gulf is an undertaking that we consider to be at the top of the list.

After a few days in our luxury retreat close to the golf course, we relocate again: to one of the comfortable tents of the Eco Beach & Oasis Camp. Because, even the joy of simplicity can be found here, in thisheavenly little place between mountains and sea. Here we take a relaxed sundowner in front of our romantic tent, before a gigantic starry sky and a campfire accompany us into the night. The popping of the golf balls has given way to the roar of the waves - which sound you prefer is up to you. But luckily, one can easily have both here.

A golf experiencebetween luxury and camping. Unique.

TravelA Course to Look Forward to

Luštica Bay, Montenegro

Montenegro has been one of THE trending destinations in Europe for several years now. No surprise, as the small Adriatic state has a lot to offer, both in terms of scenery and culture. There are five UNESCO World Heritage Sites here. One of them: the fjord-like Bay of Kotor, in the immediate vicinity of which lies the no less attractive Bay of Trašte, with the picturesque seaside destination Luštica Bay. On 270 days of the year the sun here shines on a charming landscape of crystal-clear waters, beaches fringed by moun-tains, olive groves and rolling hills. Despite its quiet location, Luštica Bay is easily accessible via Tivat airport, for instance from London, in 2.5 hours by plane, plus a 15-minute transfer – quite unbeatable.

With Luštica Bay, Orascom Development is establishing another sustainable and fully integrated city here, in this pristine and naturally beautiful bay. Two marinas, a city centre, various leisure facilities, hotels, restaurants and shops... like its “big sister” El Gouna, Luštica Bay does not only consider itself a holiday destination, but above all an independent community where several thousand people will perma-nently have their home.

“I am sure that this course will becomean iconic destination among the

world’s golfers.”

While The Chedi Luštica Bay has been the first hotel to open its doors in the summer of 2018, and the marina has also found its way onto the sailors’ itineraries, the next milestone is casting its shadow: the construction of the 18-hole Gary Player Signature golf course.

Luštica Bay Golf Course will be Montenegro’s first 18-hole championship course, embedded in one of the most scenic destinations in Europe. Conceived by World Golf Hall of Fame ambassador, pro golfer and renowned course designer Gary Player, the course will set new standards not only in terms of playing experience but also in terms of sustainability. Gary Player strives for minimal environmental impact and will make the best use of natural slopes and plateaus as well as the lush flora of the landscape during construction. However, the absolute star of the Adriatic newcomer is, and remains, the view: Every single hole will come with a panoramic view that stretches from the Adriatic Sea in the south to the UNESCO World Heritage Boka Bay in the north.

With the planning and design phase nearly complete now, the construction phase will kick-off later this year, with the goal of opening the first 9 holes within the next four years. For those who want to perfect their skills, Gary Player has also designed a driving range that offers a wide array of training facilities – again with ocean views… needless to say.

Next milestone: The construction of the 18-hole Gary Player Signature golf course.

Darren Gibson, CEO Luštica Bay

Even if golfers have to content themselves with the anticipation of this outstanding course: During the summer months, the driving range as well as golf lessons for different age groups are already available for all those wanting to improve their skills - a kind of sneak preview of the outstanding playing days to come, so to speak.

Around the golf course, however, a whole service area will be created, which will be attractive for golfers and non-golfers alike - as usual, including condominium properties of various types and features and, depending on taste, with a view of the golf course and the Adriatic Sea. As with all quarters, the “golf neighbourhood” will be connected to the Centrale district, the future heart of the growing Luštica Bay community. Its modern layout, with the well-balanced mix of apartments, shops and restaurants, as well as public and cultural facilities, is predestined for a community in which life and leisure activities take place largely outdoors. Just as it is tradition in Montenegro.

Darren Gibson, CEO Luštica Bay about the golf course plans: “The golf course enjoys a unique setting high above the surrounding bays and together with the meticulous planning of the golf layout, which takes maximum advantage of the terrain and spectacular views, we are sure that this course will become an iconic destination among the world’s golfers.”

By the way: Whoever wishes to discover the upcoming golf hotspot in advance can always enjoy the destination in all its scenic and cultural diversity from the first hotel: the unique The Chedi Luštica Bay. Located directly at the marina, it welcomes its guests with a resort atmosphere that is as comfortable as it is elegant. Its service, facilities, as well as the wide range of culinary delights on offer, meet the high standards of the brand – and the modern spa, which makes full use of traditional Far Eastern methods, is worth more than just one visit.

Additional benefit: Those who enjoy the sightseeing highlights of the region in advance, can confidently dedicate their time to the game after the course opens. Because in fact, the view is really enough ofa distraction already...

Start of construction: 2020

Around the golf course, a whole service area will be created, which will be attractive

for golfers and non-golfers alike…

NewsAnd the winner is…Three properties of Orascom Groupin Oman win the HolidayCheck Award 2020

Steffen Löser

Food & Beverage Manager of the new

Radisson Blu Hotel Reussen, Andermatt

On the podium: Three Orascom Hotels Management properties in Hawana Salalah, Oman, were awarded the coveted HolidayCheck Award 2020: the Juweira Boutique Hotel, the Salalah Rotana Resort and the Fanar Hotel & Residences Salalah Beach. Hence, the hotels of the Orascom Group were clearly dominating the winners league for the second time, as only four hotels in Oman received the award all in all. The Fanar Hotel & Residences Salalah Beach has won first place in four categories (beach hotel, top value for money, couples, luxury hotels), and is thus the most popular hotel in Oman, followed by the Juweira Boutique Hotel and the Salalah Rotana Resort.

More than 950,000 HolidayCheck customers took part in the survey, submitting their ratings for their favourite hotels over a period of one year. The users were particularly impressed by the long, white sandy beach of the three hotels, the watersports facilities at Fanar Hotel & Residences Salalah Beach and the boutique hotel character of the Juweira Beach Hotel.

Hawana Salalah is Orascom Development’s flagship property in Oman and a popular holiday destina-tion, only 20 minutes away from Salalah International Airport. The three hotels: Juweira Boutique Hotel, Salalah Rotana Resort and Fanar Hotel & Residences Salalah Beach, offer a fantastic view of the beach, the blue Indian Ocean, tranquil lagoons and the idyllic harbour. Restaurants, cafés and lounges, wateractivities and marine excursions, as well as cultural offerings and shopping possibilities complete the range of services. Further information:

In its in-house restaurant Spun, the Radisson Blu Hotel Reussen, Andermatt offers a classic modern Swiss cuisine. Steffen Löser explains the philosophy: “Swiss cuisine is a fusion of German, French and Italian influences. We incorporate this variety into our dishes, and the feedback from the first months shows that our mostly very active guests are especially happy about tasty food. Sustainability is very important to us. We work together with excellent local producers, so that we can source our products from within the region. Where this is not feasible, we rely on Swiss suppliers and purchase only very few products from abroad.” Designated Head Chef of the Radisson Blu Hotel Reussen is Gerd Rentz, who has also been working for the Radisson Hotel Group since 2013. Flanking the Spun restaurant, the cosy Bärbar in the lobby invites in-house and external guests alike to enjoy specially crafted drinks, selected spirits and local beers.

Some Berlin spirit in the Swiss moun-

tain village: Steffen Löser leads the

gastronomic areas of the Radisson Blu

Hotel Reussen, which has opened in

December 2018. The Berlin-born hotel

professional has been working for the

Radisson Hotel Group since November

2013, and was last active at the Radis-

son Blu Hotel, Zurich Airport.

With 244 rooms and a view of Ander-

matt’s impressive mountain range, the

Radisson Blu Hotel Reussen - built at

1,444 metres above sea level - is the

highest situated Hotel of the group.

Even before the opening, Steffen Löser

had his part in the strategic orienta-

tion of the four-star-superior hotel’s

F&B department. The 37-year-old hotel

specialist held various management

positions at Hampshire Inn Bad Ben-

theim and Hotel Großfeld before he

joined the Radisson Blu Hotel Zurich

Airport as Assistant Outlet Manager,

where he was the F&B manager of the

Filini Restaurants.

From mangroves to recycled hangers:Sustainability is key in El Gouna

Protection of the environment is a top priority in El Gouna: So, the United Nations Environment Day is kind of a homecoming game for the city on the shores of the Red Sea. Because the management of the destination invests heavily in the sustainability field, the city is recognized as the most environmental-ly friendly holiday destination in Egypt. El Gouna, which has been honoured with the Green City Award, is on its way to becoming the first carbon-free destination in Egypt and a role model for other cities on Environmental Protection Day.

Be it flora or fauna - El Gouna provides a home

Mangrove ecosystems are among the most important and productive habitats worldwide. They withstand extreme conditions – especially salt water. These ecosystems must be protected, especially because they are highly productive: Mangroves provide food and breeding grounds for many fish. Above the water surface, insects and birds use the plants as shelter and nesting grounds.

Save energy!

El Gouna is constantly coming up with new ideas to reduce the city’s energy consumption. Cooling and heating play a particularly important role. In rooms, so-called phase change materials act like thermal batteries and maintain a reservoir to be used to heat or cool the house. As a result, El Gouna is not de-pendent on energy-wasting measures to regulate the temperature.

Vitally important: the water

El Gouna is one of the first producers of desalinated water from the Red Sea. The city is also dependent on the drinking water that it produces. Today, there are 18 desalination plants in total using reverse osmosis to treat the water. Seven plants work on the slightly salty water from mountain springs, and 11 process water from the Red Sea.
