After completing the appropriate forms that can be found on the Chamber website (www.orangeny.com), Greenopia will review all ap- plicants and rate each one using a Green Leaf sys- tem -- companies can earn one to four leaves based on their level of eco-commitment. By Ellen DaleyAlthough it is thought by some that it can

be expensive and difficult to be “green” or sus-tainable, the business community can no longer ignore the obligation to -- and the benefits of – being environmentally responsible. Through a brand new partnership with a national industry leader in green-rated brands and services, the Orange County Chamber is now providing the opportunity for its members to become certi-fied as sustainable.

In May, the Chamber announced an agreement with Greenopia -- which has been called New York City’s “green business bible” -- that will make it possible for members to become officially certi-fied as sustainable simply by completing an online questionnaire specifically designed for their type of business. “This program establishes a credible sys-tem to substantiate the levels of eco-commitment by Orange County companies,” said Chamber President Dr. John D’Ambrosio. “It will revolution-ize the way we do business in Orange County.”

Under the partnership agreement, Chamber members will pay a fee to apply for certification (approximately 25% of the member’s annual dues investment). After completing the appropriate forms that can be found on the Chamber website (www.orangeny.com), Greenopia will review all ap-plicants and rate each one using a Green Leaf sys-tem -- companies can earn one to four leaves based on their level of eco-commitment. Companies that do not meet the criteria will be advised on how to comply. Another partner in the program is SUNY Orange. Students from the college’s environmental studies curriculum will be enlisted to visit compa-nies for which additional information may be re-quired to complete the certification process.

“This partnership is an exciting opportunity for Greenopia,” said Gay Browne, the founder and CEO of the organization. “Our goal is to provide a trusted resource that helps consumers make daily

decisions that reduce their impact on the environ-ment and lead a more sustainable, healthier life-style.”

Greenopia publishes directories in New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco of eco-friend-ly retailers, services and organizations based on ex-tensive research that determines the validity of the products and services they offer, much like the re-search they will do for the Orange County busi-nesses that apply for certification.

“The sustainability movement has generated great momentum across the country and I believe this program will help Orange County to make

considerable gains in this important area,” said Dr. D’Ambrosio. “The business community is gener-ally viewed as not being committed to being green or sustainable and this kind of initiative will help dispel that notion.”

Companies that meet Greenopia’s standards will receive an official sustainability sticker. Chamber staff will personally deliver the stick-er to the company and photos will be taken in order to promote the member as achieving sustainability. Write-ups will appear in The Business Viewpoint and other media promo-tion will be done as well. It is anticipated that a

special section of the Chamber website will be devoted to our sustainable members, as will a portion of the annual printed Membership Di-rectory. The newly-certified company will also appear on Greenopia’s website (www.greeno-pia.com) with an enhanced listing as a sustain-able business.

Kudos to theYP Banner CreatorThe Orange County Chamber Young Professionals Council thanks Stephen Hoey of KDF Reprographics, Inc. for the amazing new YP banner that he created. Stephen donated his services to create the banner, which will now hang at all YP-hosted events. Friends, community leaders and supporters recently joined the Greater Newburgh YMCA as it celebrated the opening of their new facility at 377 Broadway in Newburgh. Pictured do-ing the ribbon cutting honors are (from left): Assemblyman Frank Skartados, YMCA Board Chairman Jack Smith, Y President and CEO Trish Fisher, Senator Bill Larkin and Cham-ber President Dr. John D’Ambrosio. More information is available at www.newburghymca.org.

EXPO and e-mail The region’s biggest business trade show – the Orange County Chamber’s EXPO 2010 -- is coming up on Wednesday, September 15. Informational materials for exhibitors are currently being assembled for an anticipated mailing date in late July. However, we will send out an e-mail to all our members the day that the materials are put in the mail, giving those members for whom we have an e-mail address a jump on reserving their EXPO booth (booths are

reserved on a first come-first served basis). SO, please make sure we have your correct e-mail address on file by calling or e-mailing Patricia at 457-9700 or [email protected]. In addition to getting a head-start on EXPO, you will receive all of the e-mail correspondence we frequently send (including the monthly Business Viewpoint newsletter with all the inserts) if we have an up-to-date e-mail address for you. Don’t assume we have it. Call or e-mail Patricia now!

Orange County Executive Ed Diana and Commissioner of Planning David Church recently announced the launch of Orange County’s new “green” website, www.sustainableorangecounty.org. The site is designed to be a one-stop resource for residents, municipalities and school districts looking to save money on energy, fuel and water expenses through the practice of

smart, manageable conservation efforts. In addition to conservation and recycling tips, the website also provides links to information on grants, rebates and tax incentives from state and federal sources. “We live in one of the most beautiful counties in the country,” said Diana, “and it’s important to keep it that way.”

Is your business sustainable?Chairman’s message The fact that there is strength in numbers is what makes the Orange County Chamber of Commerce so powerful when it comes to legislative advocacy for business. As one of the 10

largest chambers of commerce in New York State, we command attention when speaking out on behalf of business-friendly legislation – and against those taxes, fees and mandates

that are killing business -- in Albany and elsewhere. So, when a small business joins this organization, they’re benefiting from the clout, as well as contributing to the size that creates our strength. So, the next in our top 10 reasons to be a member of the Orange County Chamber of Commerce is: Reason # 6: Interaction with Government The Orange County Chamber is

the only chamber in the region with registered NYS lobbyists on staff. The President and Vice President for Government Initiatives and Special Projects take these roles very seriously. They lead the way in the Chamber’s efforts to know what’s happening at local, state and federal levels, and to be proactive about the issues that impact our business community. Our Government Initiatives and Education Committee also plays a big part in keeping us informed and active in key legislative areas. Next month: everything the Chamber does is about you, our members. Your success is the reason for our existence. We’re “zealous about your success.” As always, please feel free to contact me at 845-447-1037 or [email protected] to let me know what’s most important to you and your business. As always, I look forward to hearing from you! Donna JohnsonChairman of the Board

As I mentioned in last month’s message, this Chamber has made a deep commitment to moving the business community toward sustainability and

operating in as “green” a fashion as possible. We’re done this by entering into a partnership with an organization that will help our members become certified as sustainable, and I’m delighted to announce that this program is now fully operational.

As you can see from the article on the cover, Chamber members who want to pursue certification as sustainable should visit www.orangeny.com, click

on the Chamber+Greenopia icon and begin the process toward certification. Basic information about your business will be gathered and you will soon receive an application tailored specifically for your type of business. When the review of your application is complete, you’ll be awarded a sustainability sticker (which will be personally delivered by a Chamber staff member) and we’ll promote your business as one of our sustainable members. I’m looking forward to the majority of our members participating in this program. I’m convinced that our business community is committed to environmental responsibility and now we have the opportunity to prove it. Join the Chamber in leading the way toward a better future for us all.

John A. D’Ambrosio, Ed.D.President

Important member note: Please, please, please make sure that you remember to notify the Chamber office of any changes in your contact information. We can’t do our best job for you if we can’t get in touch with you! This is particularly important for e-mail addresses. We contact our members on a regular basis via e-mail (including sending your monthly Business Viewpoint newsletter electronically with all of the in-serts), so please keep us posted on any changes. Just e-mail Dee at [email protected] or call her at 845-457-9700. She’ll be happy to take your information. Thank you.

The folks at Invisible Fence remind everyone that it’s tick season. “Be on the watch for deer ticks which are the size of a poppy seed and can spread the bacteria that cause Lyme disease,” says Heidi Lindblad. “Ticks must be attached for more than 24-36 hours to spread the bac-teria, so check for ticks daily.” Call 987-7772 for more information on how to minimize your pet’s exposure to tick-infested areas.

Whether you’re dressed up from a day at the office, dressed down because it’s Friday, or fresh off the construction site, you should join us for an evening of food, networking and some old-fashioned end-of-the-week fun. For just $10, you’ll get one of G.W.’s great burgers and the beer of your choice. So that G. How many times a day do you say to yourself, “I WISH I could remember…..”? Well, if you join us on Thursday morning, August 19 at The Fountains in Middletown, you can take a gi-ant step toward improving your memory -- and how helpful would THAT be in enhancing your place in today’s business world? The special guest speaker for our monthly membership breakfast will be Poughkeep-sie native Dave Farrow, who holds two Guin-ness World Records for greatest memory. Dave

will be sharing his special techniques with us, and this just may be one of the most important meetings you attend all year. The breakfast will begin at 7:27 a.m. and will be sponsored by the Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union. Diagnosed at 14 with dyslexia and Attention Deficit Disorder and told not to expect much from school or life, Dave was motivated to overcome these challenges by studying how the mind worked and developing special techniques

to enhance his memory. He was so successful that he began teaching other students, became one of the world’s foremost experts in the field of memorization and is a frequent speaker on the topics of learning disabilities and memory enhancing techniques. Dave started three successful companies, ap-pears regularly on national TV, and earned his Guinness World records by memorizing first 58, and then 59 decks of cards. He also sat in a Manhattan storefront for 30 days reading digi-

tal books on a SONY reader. For each page he read, SONY provided an eBook library of 100 classic titles to an educational institution. In all, he read 44,097 pages. If you want to see – and learn from -- Dave firsthand, reserve your seat now for the August 19 membership breakfast at The Fountains. Contact Roseann at 457-9700, [email protected] or at www.orangeny.com.

Eligible O&R small commercial customers in New York can learn how to save energy, lower their bills and reduce their carbon footprint, thanks to O&R’s latest energy effi-ciency initiative. O&R’s Small Business Direct Install Program will be featured at a breakfast meeting to be held at the Orange County Chamber of Commerce Business Center on June 30 from 8:00 to 10 a.m. in the Larkin Room at the Chamber’s headquarters at 30 Scott’s Corners Drive in Montgomery. Admission to the meeting is free, but reservations should be made by contacting Roseann at the Chamber at 457-9700 or [email protected]. Benefits from O&R’s $9-million program are available to all qualified O&R New York small business customers using a monthly peak demand of less than 100 kW. That program provides participants with:

•A free energy efficiency survey, including up to $100 of free energy upgrades, that identifies the equipment eligible to be replaced, the resulting energy savings and the custom-er’s payback if the customer were to install the recommend-ed equipment.

•An incentive of 70 percent of the installed measure cost for the identified cost-effective equipment, including new lighting fixtures, programmable thermostats, occupancy sen-sors and other energy savings measures.

As a result of these programs, small businesses can realize long-term bill savings by lowering their consumption and will update their existing lighting equipment with state-of-the-art lighting that performs better and often lasts longer at a lower price because of the incentive. One of the great advantages to energy efficiency programs like this one is that they pay for themselves through avoided energy costs over a relatively short period of time. And, from a business standpoint, they improve the value of the business property, both directly and indirectly. The program is administered by O&R in coordination with its implementation contractor Willdan Energy Solu-tions, one of the nation’s preeminent providers of specialized energy services. Since the program’s inception in November 2009, free energy efficiency surveys have been conducted at over 250 small businesses. As a result of those surveys, about 30 per-cent have completed the installation of energy efficiency measures, lowered their energy bills and have become more competitive in today’s market place. The program is expected to run through the end of 2011 or until the $9 million in funding runs out. Customer par-ticipation will be on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information or to set up an appointment, small business customers should contact O&R’s contractor Will-dan Energy Solutions at 1-888-WILLDAN, O&R’s Pro-gram Administrator Robert Melvin at 877-852-5678 or visit www.oru.com/SmallCI.

YOU LOVE NY...

BUT DOES NY

Take action today at EnoughAlreadyNY.org – and send a message to Albany. Because you know what’s fair and what’s not. Higher taxes, more spending, few jobs. Tell them Enough Already!

• Contact Your Legislator

• Help Fix NY

LOVE YOU?

Page 22: Orange County Chamber The Business Viewpoint

Enough Already NY is a campaign to unite New Yorkers who want lower taxes, smaller and more efficient government, economic growth and jobs. Our message is simple: No new taxes, No new borrowing, No More gimmicks. It’s time to cut runaway spending and enact major fiscal reforms. It’s time for New York State government to live within its means. Enough Already!

Enough Already NY is a project of The Business Council of New York State, Inc.

Regular New Yorkers have a story to tell – it’s time their voices are heard in Albany.

We had no choice but to leave our beloved upstate New York because of the drastic increase in prop-erty taxes. We paid more monthly for owning our house than when we had a mortgage on it.

Jack from Oswego

Our business is down 21 percent. I waited as long as I could, but I had to lay off two full time and ten part time staff. We are all doing more with less, so how can anyone expect businesses and New Yorkers to pay more taxes?

Peter from White Plains

I love New York but at the moment I'm feeling mistreated by her. Enough is enough!

John from New York City

Being a lifelong resident of New York, I have seen so many of my friends and family leave due to high taxes, no jobs and the extreme cost of living here? Bonnie from New Paltz

After graduating from Harvard College and Harvard Law School in 1974, Schumer ran for the New York State Assembly, becoming, at 23, the youngest member of the State Legislature since Theodore Roose-velt. In 1980, at 29, he won the seat in the 9th Congressional District, which he represented for 18 years. In 1998, Schumer was elected to the U.S. Senate; he became New York’s senior senator when Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan retired in 2000.
