information, encouragement, and support for you and your child.
All ECFE classes are led by experienced, licensed teachers who help children discover and learn through activities and

A Parent Perspective- Our family enjoys coming to ECFE classes because it gives
us a night of fun together without the distractions of being at
home! ECFE provides many sensory activities for the children,
structure of routine, and education for parents! I really enjoy
the parent education part of ECFE classes. It gives me, as a
parent, the opportunity to meet new people and to also talk
through issues and solutions as a group for real life situations.
The overall experience of the classes has helped me be a
better parent! -Ashley Messerschmidt
LITTLE CHARGERS

together. There will also be parent discussion time led by our parent educator where you and other parents along this
parenting journey can learn together and ask questions. This class is non-separating.

MOOD & MOVEMENT YOGA (Ages 2.5 through Grade 1)
Connection, physical activity and mindfulness are important
pieces of the parenting journey. Parenting is a challenge at any
stage and forming connections with other parents along the
way is a great support. Research tells us that movement and
physical activity play a vital role in a child’s brain
development. In adults, movement can have a profound impact
on mental health and well being. This class will give
parents/caregivers time for themselves learning yoga while
their children have time to run, jump, and play. A healthy
snack will be provided to take home after each class. Each
adult registered will receive a gratitude journal to keep.

PARTNERING WITH PARENTS TO PREPARE CHILDREN FOR KINDERGARTEN
STATE OF MINNESOTA EARLY LEARNING STANDARDS Licensed Play and Learn preschool teachers follow these research-based standards while
planning lessons and classroom centers. This Minnesota Framework includes: Social &
Emotional Development, Approaches to Learning, Language & Literacy Development,
Creativity & the Arts, Cognitive Development, and Physical & Motor Development.
CREATIVE CURRICULUM Creative Curriculum helps children become enthusiastic learners. It encourages children to
be active and creative explorers, to be curious and try out their ideas. The curriculum also
stresses an environment where children gain independence, self-confidence, and learn at
their own pace.
EVERYDAY MATH This math curriculum is used in the preschool classrooms as well as grades K-4
throughout the D-C school district. Everyday Math incorporates math into the day-to-day
activities of the classroom. The hands-on, playful math activities help preschoolers
explore math concepts including: Counting, Measurement, Shapes, Patterning,
Graphing, Number Concepts and Data Gathering.
ASSESSMENT In addition to ongoing observational assessment, collected through the Profile of
Preschool Learning and Development Readiness (Pro-LADR) tool, Staff also administer
specific early literacy and early numeracy measures to inform instruction, facilitate
appropriate interventions, and monitor progress.

SCREENING
2019-2020 Early Childhood Screening Dates:
Thursday, October 10, 2019 Thursday, January 16, 2020 Friday, November 22, 2019 Friday, February 28, 2020
Call 320-286-4120 to schedule your child’s screening appointment!
Have You Had a Baby, Adopted a Child, or Recently Moved to the Community? If you have recently had a new baby, adopted a child, or have moved to the Dassel-Cokato school district and have children
ages birth through five, it is important that they are included in the school census. This ensures that you receive notification
about early childhood screening, kindergarten enrollment and round-up, and other school-related information.
Please contact the Early Childhood Office at 320-286-4120 to verify your child(ren) is included in the school census.
EARLY CHILDHOOD SPECIAL EDUCATION (ECSE) Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) is a service
provided by the school district for children from birth to
age 5 who have special needs. ECSE programs are
designed to prepare children for the school setting, help
them meet developmental milestones, and build social
skills. ECSE teachers and speech pathologists work with
children on cognitive and language skills needed to
succeed in the school environment. Parents who are
concerned about the development of their child may call
Meeker And Wright Special Education Co-op
(MAWSECO) office at 320-543-1122.
Concerned About Your Child’s Development?
As you watch your child grow, you may become
concerned about your his/her development. While all young
children grow and change at their own rate, sometimes you
may have concerns that your child is developing differently
than other infants and toddlers the same age as your child.
If you have concerns about your child’s development,
call 1-866-693-GROW (4769). This is part of the MN Dept.
of Health, MN Dept. of Education and the MN Dept. of
Human Services. www.helpmegrowmn.org
Once a referral is made to the local early intervention
program where you reside, you will be contacted to arrange for a
FREE screening or evaluation to determine if your child is
eligible for Help Me Grow: Infant and Toddler Intervention
services.
Do you have a child ages 3-5? Early Childhood Screening
is a FREE and simple check to assist parents in improving
the educational readiness and health of young children
through the early detection of factors that may impede their
learning, growth, and development. Screening is ideally
performed as close to age 3 as possible, but is mandated by
the State of MN to be completed before kindergarten. Early
screening can detect possible health or learning concerns to
enable a child to get help before they begin kindergarten.
Don’t wait! Earlier screening is better!
The Screening Process Screening includes completing a brief health history and
immunization review; measuring the child’s height and weight;
having a summary discussion with parents; and facilitating a
developmental screening in the following areas:
n Hearing & vision
n Language & cognition
n Fine & gross motor skills
n Social-emotional development

ACT TEST-TAKING STRATEGIES (Gr. 10-12) Ruth Kivisto The ACT test is a key factor in college admissions and
scholarship awards. Increasing an ACT score by just a point or
two can result in thousands of dollars in additional scholarship
money! This extra point or two can come from simply learning
and employing test-taking strategies: pacing yourself,
understanding the test format and timing, eliminating wrong
answers, recognizing patterns in the answer choices, and
bubbling the answer document. These strategies, along with
many others, will be presented and practiced in the four subject
area tests (English, Math, Reading, and Science). The ACT is
predictable. A few hours invested in learning strategies will help
students achieve the best possible score! Please bring a calculator and a snack for break if you wish.

different countries. There are eight basic movements that are
the building blocks that combine to make up all of the
clogging steps. We will learn some of these basic movements
and simple steps and dance to a variety of music, both old and
new. No previous dance experience is necessary. Bring

OLD LOG THEATRE: A GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO LOVE & MURDER This knock-’em dead, uproarious Tony award winning
musical makes its Minnesota premiere at Old Log Theatre.
Set in London in 1907, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love &
Murder centers on Monty Navarro, a penniless clerk who is
informed after the death of his mother that he is ninth in line
to inherit the earldom of Highhurst, controlled by the wealthy
D’Ysquith banking family. After the imperious ruling Lord
dismisses Monty’s claim of being a relative, the eight
D’Ysquiths ahead of young Mr. Navarro begin dying in
natural and unnatural ways. (A single actor plays all the not-
so-nice D’Ysquiths, adding to the merriment.) Your fee
includes motorcoach transportation, theatre show and lunch.
