Dear Mom’s, Making lesson plans, gathering materials, teaching, grading, cooking, cleaning, driving, encouraging, hugging... What busy and complicated lives home school moms lead! No wonder we find it difficult to place a high priority on reading and studying Scripture. But we need to consider what we forfeit when we disregard 2 Tim. 2:15 and 3:16-17.

Work hard so God can approve you. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth. (2:15 NLT)

All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (3:16-17 NIV)

One benefit of study is preparedness. When we know God’s Word, we’re “prepared” to teach our children, to expose any wrong thinking or actions, and to give biblical correction that enables them to choose what is right. What do we forfeit if we neglect study? We will be unprepared and not equipped to guide our children in God’s way.

God-breathed means that Scripture is inspired by God. As we study His Word, God “grows” us in the spiritual life skills we need for effective home schooling. If we fail to study Scripture, we forfeit a steady spiritual growth.

2 Tim. 2:15 describes the kind of effort God desires from His “workman.” “Work hard” can also be translated “study” or “be diligent.” As believers we should make every effort to do our best to study, understand, and apply God’s Word in our own lives. Without such diligence, we may forfeit the ability to share the Word correctly and effectively with our children

Encouragement for Home School Moms was written to help you in your study of Scripture. I pray that these studies in God’s Word will increase your faith and help you be a display of Christlikeness to your children. If you diligently study His Word, you will be prepared and equipped for your task!

JOURNALING

Journal your meditation thoughts and insights to know God. Jour-naling–writing thoughts, meditations, prayers, or truths we have just discovered–is a highly effective way to reinforce what God is teaching. Journaling helps us to think about our life and what God is doing. We sometimes give little thought to what we are experiencing and what God is revealing to us about Himself, His eternal purposes, His plans, and His will for us.

David probably kept a journal, which we read today in the book of Psalms. He wrote, Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced (Psa. 105:5). David re-corded great times of joy and praise, as well as deep despair and depression; times of defeat as well as deliverance. We are blessed when we read these records of his spiritual journey. David wrote in Psa. 143:5, I remember the days of long ago; I meditate on all your works and consider what your hands have done.

There are many ways to keep a journal. Don’t get caught thinking that you have to write many words. A few words can, at times, express your thoughts adequately. Consider these ways to journal:

• Record personal thoughts, perspectives, and experiences. • Journal deep thoughts or insights you gain from scripture. • Write a personal letter to God. • Write a prayer to God expressing praise, thanksgiving, concerns, requests, and gratitude for answered prayer. • Record poems or songs. • Write or paraphrase a passage from scripture that becomes meaningful to you.

Journaling is collecting our memories as reminders of our own struggles, joys, God’s faithfulness and power.

Have Confidence in God Alone

Home schooling can be a challenging task. When David was facing challenging circumstances, he turned his thoughts to who God is. This habit helped David develop a deep and personal relationship and fel-lowship with God. In Psalm 62, he expressed his absolute confidence in God alone. 1. Read Psa. 62:1-2.*1 What did David gain by focusing on who God is?

2. The KJV translates verse 1, “Truly my soul waiteth upon God” and the NASB renders it “My soul waits in silence for God only.” Is it possible that silence denotes calmness of soul? What thoughts does the phrase, “calmness of soul” add to your answer to question #1?

3. The Expositor’s Bible Commentary states, “Salvation signifies the whole process of redemption extending to vindication and to the enjoyment of covenant privileges.” According to verse 2, what was David assured of because of his faith in God?

4. Like David, have you formed the habit of focusing on who God is? Are rest in God and calmness of soul, characteristic of your life? If not, how do you plan to improve in this area on this trip?

5. Review Psa. 62:1-4, and read verses 5-6. What do you think of when you read, “[God] alone is my rock...my fortress.” Make a list of some ways that God is like a boulder and a fortress. Do you relate to God in this way?*2

6. Read verses 5-6. Why did David have hope?*3

7. Explain how “hope” fits with resting and waiting.

8. David emphasized “God alone” being our rock, salvation, and fortress. Why is God the only one who can meet our needs? What happens when we look to people, things, or experiences to meet them?

Prayer Suggestion: Ask God to help you habitually turn your thoughts to who He is–your rock, your salvation, your fortress. Give thanks for restful

calm when you focus on His greatness and goodness.

Psa. 62:5-6 Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him. 6 He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.

Important to note:

Journaling Suggestion: Review Psalm 62:1-2, 5-6. List each of the ways David portrays God. Choose one word that encourages you to put your confidence in the Lord. Explain why this particular truth enables you to depend on the Lord in challenging times.

Write praise to God for each truth and benefit that you listed.



Day 3 Life is a Spiritual Tug-Of-War

Tug-of-war is a game of strength and endurance that confronts every be-liever. Galatians 5:16-17 describes the spiritual tug-of-war that all believers must face. The sin nature on one end and the Holy Spirit on the other end are constantly fighting against each other–both vying for our loyalty.*1

In order to be effective teachers in the home, we must “live by the Spirit” moment-by-moment.

1. Read Gal. 5:16-17. What does verse 17 reveal as the reason for the struggle between our sin nature and the Spirit?

2. According to Gal. 5:17 and Rom. 7:18, what is the result of directing our lives in a way that is consistent with our own sin nature?

3. According to Gal. 5:16, what takes place in the heart and life of a believer who chooses to keep on walking in the Spirit?*2

4. Read 1 Pet. 2:11-12. What may we forfeit by allowing the sinful nature to control? How should you combat accusers?

Gal. 5:16-17 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. 17 For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.

Rom. 7:18 I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.

1 Pet. 2:11 Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

5. Review Gal. 5:16-17. Living by the Spirit involves continuing to “depend on and obey” the Spirit for power and strength. What is pro-duced when you walk in the Spirit? What is indicated by the lack of these Christ-like characteristics?

6. According to Rom. 6:19, what is necessary for continuing to “depend on and obey” the Spirit for power and strength. What is the result?*3

7. Why is it important to include your will, your emotions, and your mind in this “offering”?*4

8. Read 2 Tim. 3:16-17. As you walk in the Spirit moment-by-moment, how is your knowledge and understanding of the Word of God a powerful weapon for the battle?

Prayer Suggestion: Praise God for the power and strength through the Holy Spirit that enables and empowers you for victory in your tug-of-war. Ask Him to help you to keep

on yielding in obedience to Christ.

Gal. 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Rom. 6:19 I put this in human terms because you are weak in your natural selves. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness.

Important to note:

*3Holiness may be translated “sanctification.” Sanctification is a believer’s ongoing tranformation into Christ-likeness.

*4Emotions can be a strong ally or an intense, deceitful enemy. Feelings can choose either side, but often they side with the sin nature, and the enemy. Emotions can deceive us.

Guard Your Heart

In Scripture, the word “heart” can refer to the the inner life of a person.Our actions and our words flow from our hearts. Our hearts control our behavior. What is the condition of your heart? “...Your heart...affects everything you do.” (Prov. 4:23 NLT )

In the Greek language the word “heart” means “the inner man, mind, or will.” The Easton Bible Dictionary states that our heart is “the center not only of spiritual activity, but of all the operations of human life.” In the NIV Prov. 4:23 says that our heart is the wellspring of life, which means that our heart is the source of things that flow out from our life.

1. According to Luke 6:45. What determines our heart’s condition?

2. Explain what is produced from the heart.*1 How is “overflow” experi-enced?

3. What determines what you say?

4. The NASB translates Prov. 4:23 as “Watch over your heart with all diligence....” According to Rom. 13:14, Eph. 4:24, and Gal. 5:16, what is required to guard your heart with diligence?

Prov. 4:23 Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.

Luke 6:45 The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.

Rom. 13:14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts. NAS

Eph. 4:24 ...and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

5. Every believer battles from time to time with filth that pollutes their heart. God has provided a way to keep our hearts cleansed moment-by-moment. Read 1 John 1:5, 7.*2 What do we need to have “fellowship” (oneness or partnership) with God?

6. According to 1 John 1:9, what is God willing to do if we agree with Him about the specific sin that has caused us to walk in darkness?*3

7. How does confessing our sin moment-by-moment cause us to have a heart that is prepared to store up good things?

8. Why must our walk in the light be a moment-by-moment, life-long practice?

Prayer Suggestion: Take this time to confess any known sin. Thank God for His complete and total forgiveness. Ask Him to help you store good things in

your heart until it is filled up to overflowing, that you may glorify Him in all your thoughts and conduct.

1 John 1:5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.

1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Important to note:

*2In these verses, “light” is used to picture “good” (holiness). “Darkness” is the absence of “light,” and indicates evil (sin).

*3We may not have feelings of sorrow for sin, but we can choose to confess our sin by an act of our will, because it is right and good, and we want to obey God. God knows our heart.

Journaling Suggestion: Reread the definition of “heart” in the intro-duction. In addition to the storing up of material possessions, what else competes to fill our heart? What “ eternal treasures” are you storing up?



“Soak” in God’s Word

“Apart from being steeped in the Word of God, no one can move on to maturity in the Christian life.”*1 “Steeped” is a verb that means ‘to undergo soaking...especially in order to soften, cleanse, or extract an essence.”*2 Believers need to be soaked in the Word of God.

I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word. Psa. 119:16

What a difference it makes to read the Word to simply know God. If you are focusing on God Himself in the Word, you no longer are studying the Word for the sake of knowledge, but you are seeking to know God personally through the Scriptures. Deut. 4:29 says, But if ... you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul. 1. What does Psa. 53:2 reveal about God’s desire for people to seek Him.What does God want us to understand?*3

2. According to Jer. 29:13-14a, God gives a requirement and a guarantee. Explain the requirement. Explain the guarantee.

3. “All your heart” means to be totally involved and committed 100%. List some specific changes a commitment like this would entail in your life.

Day 7Psa. 53:2 God looks down from heaven on the sons of men to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God.

Jer. 29:13-14 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you,” declares the LORD,...

4. Read Jer. 9:23-24. List the things God says are not worth boasting about. What is worthy of our boast?*4

5. God indicates that when we know Him we grow to understand and trust His character. List the character traits of God revealed in verse 24. Why do you think God delights for you to know and understand them?

6. Read Heb. 11:6. The NIV uses the word earnestly and the KJV uses the word diligently. What kind of effort in seeking God fulfills the mean-ing of these words?

7. According to 1 John 5:20, what do we “know”? Why?

Seeking to know God in an ever-increasing intimacy must be your most important pursuit. It is not a mechanical exercise in the spiritual disciplines. God never intended for believers to only learn “about” Him. Remember, God is not a job–He is a divine Person who loves you and wants you to grow in your personal relationship and fellowship with Him.

Prayer Suggestion: Give God praise for allowing you to possess the Word of God in your own language. Ask Him to help you to seek to know God in a deeply

personal and intimate way through the reading and study of His Word.

Jer. 9:23-24 This is what the LORD says: “Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, 24 but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,” declares the LORD.

Heb. 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

1 John 5:20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true—even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

Important to note:

Journaling Suggestion: Don’t settle for an overwhelming amount of activity, or for a busy, complicated, empty, and unfruitful life. By neglecting our study of God’s Word, we trade the glorious joy and victory that is available through seeking to know God intimately for a spiritual drought. What is your plan to “soak” in God’s Word.

Day 9 Live for Christ

Can you imagine how amazing the words of Rom. 12:1 must have been for believers that were formerly involved in sacrificing animals on the temple altar? The Apostle Paul uses this imagery to teach believers to place themselves on God’s altar as a sacrifice-–not only to die to selfish desires, but to “live” for Christ!

1. Read Rom. 12:1-2. Why should we offer our bodies as a living sacrifice? What is the purpose of your sacrifice?

2. A.W. Tozer defines “mercy” in his book The Attributes of God as, “To stoop in kindness to an inferior, to have pity upon and to be actively com-passionate.” Read Eph. 2:4-5. Explain God’s act of mercy that should cause us to continually obey Rom. 12:1.

3. According to Rom. 12:2, what two processes are involved in the transformation of our minds?

4. Evaluate your normal day. What habits might conform your thinking to the world’s pattern? What habits help you renew your mind?

Rom. 12:1-2 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Eph. 2:4-5 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.

5. Review Rom. 12:1-2. Read Eph. 4:21-24. The Discovery Bible informs us that the Greek verb tense of the word “transformed” means, “Commit-ment to a long term way of doing something.” Transformation is a process. Why is a transformation of our minds needful?*

6. “Renewal” means a total change from the inside out, a metamorphosis. What does verse 21 indicate must take place in order to obey the command in verse 22?

7. Verse 24 states that “you are a new person.” According to verses 23-24, explain what the new life looks like.

8. Read Psa. 119:11, 1 Tim. 4:13, and 2 Tim. 3:16-17. What is necessary for the renewal of our minds?

Prayer Suggestion: Praise God that you can experience ongoing transformation by the renewing of your mind through

obedience and His Word. Ask God to give you the desire and the courage to be a living sacrifice for Him.

Eph. 4:21-24 Since you have heard all about him and have learned the truth that is in Jesus, 22 throw off your old evil nature and your former way of life, which is rotten through and through, full of lust and deception. 23 Instead, there must be a spiritual renewal of your thoughts and attitudes. 24 You must display a new nature because you are a new person, created in God’s likeness—righteous, holy, and true. NLT

Journaling Suggestion: How can you make this teaching practical in your life?



Day 11 Set Aside Your Rights For the Sake of The Gospel

One of the blessings of home school is the freedom of each family to decide how they want to instruct their children. Sometimes other’s ways are not wrong–just different. At times you will have to give up your liberty–your rights. This is not compromise, but rather “a total abandonment to the higher law of love.”* Jesus Christ humbled Himself and became a servant to all.

1. According to Gal. 5:13, what may happen to our freedom when we are unwilling to set aside our rights?

2. From 1 Cor. 8:9, explain how exercising our freedom could become a stumbling block to others.

3. Read 1 Pet. 2:16. What allows us to be truly free? Explain what your answer would involve. Consider: time, changes, effort, sacrifice, etc.

4. According to 1 Cor. 9:19, how did the Apostle Paul apply the principle of “true freedom?” What was his purpose?

Gal. 5:13 You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.

1 Cor. 8:9 Be careful, however, that the exercise of your freedom does not become a stumbling block to the weak.

Prayer Suggestion: Thank the Lord for an opportunity to sacrifice your rights to love and serve others for Jesus.

Ask God to enable you to show unconditional love to specific people you’re serving each day.

1 Cor. 9:22-23 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. 23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.

Serve When It’s Not Convenient

While serving in a tiny clinic in Nepal, a nurse commonly witnessed an elderly doctor tenderly carrying his patients to awaiting beds after surgery. Upon his return to the operating room, he knelt to clean up the blood on the floor beneath the operating table. She also said, “It was not unusual for him to wash bedpans.” 1. In Mark 10:43-45, Jesus presented a revolutionary truth about greatness. What did Jesus say is the way to greatness?

2. According to verse 45, what was Jesus’ purpose for coming?

3. The most bothersome word in verse 44, is “all.” What generally is your attitude about serving others? Are there any duties you think are beneath you? Who do you most often have NO desire to serve?

4. We see one scriptural example of true servanthood in John 13:2-5 when Jesus washed the feet of His disciples, a job usually given to the least of the slaves. Jesus even washed Judas’ feet knowing full well his intentions to betray Him. What was Jesus demonstrating by this act?

Day 13Mark 10:43-45...Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

John 13:2-5 The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.



Serve When It’s Not Convenient, Cont. 5. Review Mark 10:43-45. Read John 13:13-15. In verse 13, Jesus agrees with the disciples that He is indeed their Teacher and Lord. Why did Jesus mention His positions?

6. Explain the meaning of Christ’s example of serving in verses 14-15.

7. When Jesus was rebuking the religious leaders in Matt. 23, He summed up the principle of greatness in verses 11-12.*1 From verse 11, explain what Jesus means, using His own example.

8. Write the principle from Matt. 23:12.*2 Write a specific example of the principle in verse 2 from your own life.

Prayer Suggestion: Praise the Lord for His own example of servanthood. Ask God to help you display His humility. Ask Ask Him to make you willing to do

the most menial jobs to serve others for His glory.

John 13:13-15 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.

Matt. 23:11-12 The greatest among you will be your servant. 12 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

Hold Out The Word of Life

How freeing it is to realize that...God is working in you, giving you the desire to obey him and the power to do what pleases him (Phil. 2:13 NLT). Following this encouraging verse, the Apostle Paul exhorted his readers to refrain from griping and disputing. On any level, these ungodly attitudes do NOT serve to advance the good purposes of God.

1. Read Phil. 2:13-15. According to verse 13, what enables believers to accomplish God’s work?

2. According to verses 14-15, how may believers display their relationship to God?

3. Explain the contrast between the unsaved world and the child of God.

4. Why would the world notice believers who refrained from griping and arguing?

Phil. 2:13 ...for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.

Phil. 2:14-15 Do everything without complaining or arguing, 15 so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe.

6. Since the world is crooked and corrupt, explain how it may be difficult to refrain from the sins of complaining or arguing in everyday life. Read Phil. 4:4. What should replace these sinful attitudes?*2

7. Explain why it is encouraging to know that abstaining from grumbling and complaining can make a difference in the lives of unsaved people.

Prayer Suggestion: Thank the Lord for showing you how you damage your testimony for Christ when you display a disgruntle attitude. If needed,

confess any known sin. Ask God for strength to rejoice in difficult circumstances. Praise Him for complete forgiveness.

Phil. 2:16 ...as you hold out the word of life—in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing.

Live as Children of Light While serving in Papua New Guinea, we were totally dependent upon an ancient generator to provide electricity for lighting. At an appointed time each night, we could hear the generator’s motor groan to a stop, and darkness would prevail. I dreaded the uncomfortable feelings that accompanied that sudden plunge into darkness, and I always wished we could keep the lights on.

1. In Ephesians, God warns us about spiritual darkness and the necessity to live in the light.*1 According to Eph. 5:8, what were we? What are believers now?

2. According to 1 Thes. 5:5, what is inappropriate for you now?

3. Read Col. 1:13-14. What change in the believe’s life makes Eph. 5:9 possible?

Day 19 Effective and Productive Service

As a home school mom, I often felt inadequate for the task. One day I discovered Colossians 2:10, “In [Christ]*1 you have been made complete.” The word “complete” means complete–nothing lacking–absolutely noth-ing more is needed. You have all you need to be powerfully effective and productive in your life and work. But without diligent effort, what you possess will be dormant.

1. Read 2 Pet. 1:3. According to verse 3, what has been given to believers?

2. When you think of your answer to question #1 originating from God’s divine power, how does this strengthen your own resolve to live a godly life?*2

God is our refuge and strength,

God is our shelter from the troubles of life. He is our strength. We find safety, courage. and rest when we trust Him. Believers have no need to fear; Almighty God is always present with them.

2. How bad is the trouble the writer has described?

3. What phrase indicates that facing trouble with confidence is a choice?

8. According to Psa. 147:10-11, what do these verses say pleases the Lord?

9. Can you say with confidence that God is your refuge and strength? Do you believe He is always present to help you in times of trouble? What truth about God most encourages you to have con-fidence in Him as your refuge and strength?

Day 23In God’s Hands

Every life can be thought of as a journey. Our “journeys” are all unique and as individual as our finger prints. In Psalm 31:15a, the author states: “My times are in Your hands....” This phrase in the Hebrew language could be translated as “my continual circumstances are in Your hands.” This truth was a great comfort to David.

1. Read Psa. 31:1-5. According to verses 1-2, what did David know that caused him to take refuge in God?

2. What did David request in verses 1-5?

3. Often we are not aware of a “trap,” but we know the strategy of Satan is to hinder our effectiveness as an example of Christ to the world. Like David, what truths of God will you cling to?

4. Why was David able to commit his spirit into the Lord’s hands?*1

Psa. 31:1-5 In you, O LORD, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; deliver me in your righteousness. 2 Turn your ear to me, come quickly to my rescue; be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me. 3 Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me. 4 Free me from the trap that is set for me, for you are my refuge. 5 Into your hands I commit my spirit; redeem me, O LORD, the God of truth.

Day 25The Way to Contentment

Have you ever noticed that the word “content” has two different meanings? The meaning depends on how you pronounced it? “Content” (kon tent’) means “satisfied.” “Content” (kon’ tent) means, “what is contained in anything...”*1 Contentment means that we are content with the content of our lives.

“The real issue of contentment is whether it is Christ or ourselves who determine the content...Only when we allow Christ to determine the content (e.g., money, position, family, circumstances) of our lives can we discover...contentment.”*2 I would add “location” to this list.

1. Do you think that Christ determines the content in your life? Explain. Note a verse that supports your thinking.

2 How do you think a discontent believer might try to control the content in their life to achieve contentment?

3. When believers try to control the content, what sinful attitudes and actions are the result? (Example: Covetousness.) What content of your life have you tried to control? What were the results?

4. It’s interesting that while the Apostle Paul was in prison, He wrote about contentment. That letter became the book of Philippians, a book that is all about joy.*3 Read Phil. 4:11-12. From verse 11, what did Paul reveal about contentment?*4

Phil. 4:11-12 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.

8. Paul stated clearly that he hadn’t achieved all these things. But that didn’t slow Paul down. According to Phil 3:12-14, how was Paul work ing toward his goal?

Day 26Phil. 3:7-9 But what-ever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. 8 What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the right-eousness that comes from God and is by faith.

Phil. 3:10-11 I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.

Phil. 3:12-13 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead.14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Joy–The Mark Of A Believer

Joy is not only an emotion; joy is also a quality, established upon God Himself. Adam Clarke’s Commentary on the Whole Bible states, “Genuine happiness [joy] is spiritual; as it can only come from God.”*1 An unknown author wrote, “Happiness happens, but joy abides.”

1. Read Phil. 4:4. What is commanded?

2. Read Psa. 16:11. Who produces joy? How is the command in Phil. 4:4 possible?

3. How is God described in Romans 15:13? What is given to those who trust in God? What is the result?*2

4. How are the words “ fill,” “all,” and “overflow” significant to you? Why do you think “hope” and “eternal pleasures” are mentioned, and are they so important to joy and peace?

Moses likened God to the protective hovering wings of an eagle–“You yourselves have seen what I did [to the Egyptians], and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself ” (Ex. 19:4).*1 [Authors brackets]

1. Read Deut. 32:10-11. What were the conditions in which God found His people?

2. Explain how your answer to question #1 can describe difficult times in a believer’s life.

3. The Amplified Version of the Bible clarifies some facts: He found him in a desert land, in the howling void of the wilderness; He kept circling around him, He scanned him [penetratingly], He kept him as the pupil of His eye.*2 Explain how God reacted to their situation.

4. Describe the protective care of God from verse 11. Why do you think they needed to be “stirred up”?*3 What is God’s reaction to His stirring?

Prayer Suggestion: Praise God for His protective “wings” in times of difficulty and calamity. Ask Him to increase your faith as you trust in His care and
