Performance Anxiety: what causes it and how to fight it by Valerie Johnson

There are a lot of performances and auditions going on this time of year, so let’s take a moment to talk about performance anxiety. First of all, what is it? While there is a psychological component, it’s actually largely the body’s response to a stressful situation. This is often called the fight-or-flight response. Imagine that you come face to face with a hungry lion. Your body will produce adrenaline so that you can a) fight the lion, or b) run a way from the lion. This is the same reaction your body has to a big performance, although it happens in varying degrees depending on the person and the performance. Unfortunately, neither fighting nor fleeing is an appropriate response to any performance. Fortunately, there are ways to minimize this reaction. To address the underlying cause of the anxiety, we must ask ourselves, “why am I nervous?” Usually, it is the fear of some sort of failure. The best way to set your mind at ease is to prepare fully. When adrenaline comes knocking, you should be able to rely on muscle memory because of all of your excellent practice! Do everything you can to prepare well in advance of the performance. Do a mock audition/recital/concert for your friends or teacher. Wear the clothes and shoes you intend to wear and, if possible, do it in the same place and time that the actual performance will be. Beta-blockers, when prescribed by a doctor, can be taken to reduce performance anxiety. However, as a prescription drug they often come with hefty side affects and should not be taken lightly. Talk to your doctor if you think beta-blockers might be appropriate to treat your performance anxiety. Luckily, natural beta-blockers can be found in many tasty foods. Foods that are high in potassium will help minimize the fight-or-flight response. Some of these are: bananas, potatoes, dark leafy greens, potatoes, squash, avocados, and fish. While you will have to eat ingest a good deal of potassium to match the effects of a prescription beta-blocker, these foods are safer and tastier than the prescription route. Once your performance is underway, use the excess energy to help you focus on the music. Time may seem to stop while your brain uses the extra adrenaline to become hyperaware of your surroundings. This extra element of awareness may help to stay in the moment and focus on the task at hand. Use it to your advantage and make beautiful music! Good luck with all of your upcoming Performances!

Happy Spring Everyone! I know with all the snow it doesn’t quite feel like spring yet, but it will soon enough. My lilies and irises have started popping up and the trees are budding out. It’s a time of renewal and planning, and rest assured, the CFA is also busy planning! We have so many local summer flute camps (with scholarships to help get you there) and an amazing line up for next year. We want to help inspire you on your musical journey. So submit your scholarship applications and then mark your calendars for our upcoming artists, Ali Ryerson in September, Lona McGhee in October and Sir James and Lady Jeanne Galway in March. I also want to congratulate all our K-12 student competition winners! It is a joy to help inspire young talent and I know for many, the highlight of the day was getting to hear Marco Granados perform. It was a great way to end the day! Thank you to Isabella Ubertone, Liz Hicks-Kimmy, Gabriela Bliss, Emma Shubin and all our other volunteers and teachers for supporting this event. Lastly, we at the CFA are always looking for new volunteers to make our organization run. If you are interested on serving on the board or a committee next year, please let me know! It takes a group of dedicated souls to make all this happen. Thank you to our current board, Colleen White, Andrea Murano, Chris Potter, Meghan Dunne, Megan Lanz and Valerie Johnson for all your work this year!
