In 2009, mobile devices and demand for Wi-Fi demonstrated a dramatic shift in attendee behavior.

Gamification increases engagement in everyday tasks (FourSquare, Chore Wars).

“Big data” and “cloud” technology increase demand for deep analytics.

Experiments in neurobiology produced evidence that elevated adrenaline levels correlates highly with subsequent retention of information.

In 2009, RSNA experimented with fear by releasing a hoard of zombies into the lakeside learning center and exhibit halls.

Results:The zombies could not compete

with iPhones for attention.The attendees that did notice

In 2010, RSNA presented a course called “Sweating to the RSNA.”

Results:The audience remained

glued to their seats in shock, burning fewer calories and lowering adrenaline levels.

Sales of alcoholic beverages increased at McCormick Place after this course.

In 2011, RSNA presented the first RSNA Diagnosis Live ™ session.

Built for radiologists with direction from Dr. Paul Chang, MD (University of Chicago).

Audience members used their own mobile devices to point out abnormalities on radiological images. (Mobile/engagement)

Members competed at individual and team levels, earning points for every correct answer. (Gamification/adrenaline)

Members and presenters receive real-time results and post-game analytics. (Big data/cloud)

RSNA Diagnosis Live generated positive feedback during the RSNA meeting.

RSNA Diagnosis Live™: Other uses

Kindergarten Live session in May 2012 to test for use in residency programs.

Expanded to 12 sessions in 2013, and 18 sessions are slated for 2014.

9 hospitals are currently using Diagnosis Live in their residency programs.

Society of Pediatric Radiology used RSNA Diagnosis Live during their May meeting.

Player’s smartphone / tablet device.

1. The presenter controls the presentation much like a PowerPoint.

Cloud-based system requires internet access for players and the presenter.

Works best over WiFi, but works over 3G connections as well.

Built on modern web technology: Node.js, SocketIO and MongoDB

Current system can handle up to 500 simultaneous users.

Allows logins with third parties, such as Facebook, Google, Yahoo.
