Read the operating instructions be-fore using this machine for the firsttime. They contain important infor-mation about the safety, use andmaintenance of the machine. Thisway you will avoid the risk of acci-dents and damage to the machine.Keep these operating instructions ina safe place and ensure that newusers are familiar with the content.Pass them on to any future owner ofthe machine.

Correct usageOnly use the machine to washitems which are specified by the

manufacturer to be machine-washableon the wash-care label and textilescomposed of hand-washable wool orwool blend fabrics as well as satin, lace, silk and other hand-washable gar-ments.Any other applications may be danger-ous. The manufacturer is not liable fordamage resulting from improper use oroperation.

This machine should not be oper-ated by children. Supervise its use

by the elderly or infirm.

Technical safetyBefore setting up the machine, check it for any externally visible

damage. Do not install and use a dam-aged machine.

Before connecting the machine, ensure that the connection data on

the data plate (fusing, voltage and fre-quency) match the mains electricitysupply. If in any doubt, consult a quali-fied electrician.

The electrical safety of this appli-ance can only be guaranteed when

continuity is complete between the ma-chine and an effective earthing systemwhich complies with local and nationalregulations. It is most important that thisbasic safety requirement is regularlytested by a qualified electrician. The manufacturer cannot be held re-sponsible for the consequences of aninadequate earthing system (e.g. elec-tric shock).

The machine is built in accordancewith current safety requirements.

Unauthorised repairs could result in un-foreseen dangers for the user, for whichthe manufacturer cannot accept re-sponsibility. Repairs should only be un-dertaken by a Miele approvedengineer.Ensure current is not supplied to theappliance while maintenance or repairwork is being carried out.

The machine is only completelyisolated from the electricity supply

when:

– it is switched off at the wall socketand the plug is withdrawn, or

– it is switched off at the mains, or

– the mains fuse is withdrawn.

The best materials are used in themanufacture of this machine, and

every care is taken to check all parts. However, with time, deterioration ofparts can occur, especially with suchcomponents as hoses, giving rise toleaks. This should be borne in mind ifoperating the machine without supervi-sion. Check the hoses regularly forsigns of wear, and change in goodtime, to avoid leaks and subsequentdamage.

Faulty components must only bereplaced by genuine Miele original

spare parts. Only when these parts arefitted can the safety standards of themachine be guaranteed.

In countries where there are areaswhich may be subject to infestation

by cockroaches or other vermin, payparticular attention to keeping the appli-ance and its surroundings in a cleancondition at all times. Any damagewhich may be caused by cockroachesor other vermin will not be covered bythe guarantee.

UseDo not install the machine in roomswhere temperatures below freezing

may occur. Frozen hoses may burst un-der pressure. The reliability of the elec-tronic control unit may be impaired attemperatures below freezing point.

Before using the machine for thefirst time, check that the transit fit-

ting at the rear of the machine has beenremoved (see section on "Installation").During spinning, a transit fitting which isstill in place may result in damage toboth the machine and adjacent furni-ture or appliances.

Avoid contact of stainless steel sur-faces (front, lid, casing) with liquid

cleaning and disinfecting agents whichcontain chlorine or sodiumhypochlorite. These agents can have acorrosive effect on stainless steel. Ag-gressive vapours containing chlorinebleach can also be corrosive. Do notstore open containers of these agentsnear the machine.

Turn off the stopcock if the ma-chine is to be left for any length of

time (e.g. holiday), especially if there isno floor drain (gully) in the immediatevicinity.

Flooding dangerIf hooking the drain hose into a

wash basin, check that the water candrain off quickly enough to prevent thesink from overflowing.Make sure the drain hose is secure, sothat the force of the water flowing out ofthe hose does not dislodge it. Other-wise this will result in flooding.

Take care to ensure that foreign ob-jects (e.g. nails, pins, coins, paper

clips) do not find their way into the ma-chine with the washing. These maydamage components of the machine(e.g. suds container, drum), which inturn can result in damage to the wash-ing.

Warning and safety instructions

If the correct amount of detergentis dispensed, the machine should

not need to be descaled. If, however, you do wish to descale the machineonly use proprietary non-corrosivedescaling agents and strictly observethe instructions on the packaging. If indoubt contact the Miele Customer Ser-vice Dept. or your Miele Dealer.

Textiles which have beenpre-treated in solvent based clean-

ing agents must be thoroughly rinsed inclean water before being washed in themachine.

Never use solvent based cleaningagents in this machine, as this may

result in damage to component partsand create toxic fumes. Such deter-gents also pose a fire and explosionhazard.

Only use dyes specified by themanufacturer as being suitable for

use in a washing machine. Always ob-serve the manufacturer’s instructionscarefully.

Colour run and dye removers maycontain sulphur compounds which

cause damage such as corrosion. Donot use these products in this machine.

If washing at very high tempera-tures remember that the porthole

glass will be hot . Do not let childrentouch it during a hot wash programme.

Always make sure the drum is sta-tionary before reaching in to re-

move washing. Reaching into a movingdrum is extremely dangerous.

AccessoriesAccessory parts may only be fittedwhen expressly approved by Miele.

If other parts are used, guarantee, per-formance and product liability claimsmay be invalidated.

Disposal of your old machineBefore discarding an old machineunplug it. Render the plug useless.

Cut off the cable directly behind the ap-pliance to prevent misuse. This shouldbe done by a competent person.

All modern detergents produced forautomatic washing machines are suit-able, including liquid, compact (con-centrated), and special application de-tergents.

Use dispensing aids, e.g. balls, if theseare supplied with the detergent.

Woollens and knitwear containing woolmixtures should be washed using a de-tergent specifically designed for wash-ing woollens.

Instructions for use and recommendedamounts are given on the detergentpackaging.

The right amount to dispense will de-pend on the following:

– The quantity of laundry

– The soiling level of the laundry

Lightly soiledNo visible dirt or stains. Possiblyslight body odour.

Normally soiledVisibly dirty and/or just a few slightstains.

Heavily soiledStains and soiling clearly visible.

– The water hardness level in the areaIf you do not know the hardness levelcontact your local water authoritywho will be able to advise you.

See "Problem solving guide" for adviceon how to deal with textiles heavilysoiled with oil or grease.

Water hardness

Hardnessrange

Water mmol/l Germanscale

°d

I soft 0 - 1.3 0 - 7

II medium 1.3 - 2.5 7 - 14

III hard 2.5 - 3.8 14 - 21

IV very hard over 3.8 over 21

It is important to dispense thecorrect amount, because...

...too little detergent results in:

– Laundry not getting properly cleanand with time it may become greyand hard to the touch.

– Greasy particles clinging to the laun-dry.

– Limescale building up on heaterelements.

...too much detergent results in:

– Excessive foam.

– Low level of agitation.

– Poor wash, rinse and spin results.

– A burden to the environment.

Fabric conditioners, texturisersand liquid starchFabric conditioners make garments softand fluffy to handle and help preventstatic cling when tumble drying.

Texturisers are synthetic starch formula-tions which stiffen items of laundry, e.g.shirts, tablecloths and bed linen.

Starch stiffens and gives body to itemsof laundry, e.g. shirts, tablecloths andbed linen.

^ Dispense according to the manufac-turer’s instructions.

Automatic dispensing of fabricconditioner, texturiser or liquidstarch

^ Open the lid to compartmentp.

^ Add the fabric conditioner, texturiseror liquid starch. Do not exceed themaximum level mark.

^ Close the compartment lid.

^ Push in the dispenser drawer.

The conditioner or liquid starch is auto-matically dispensed in the last rinse. Atthe end of the programme a smallamount of water remains in compart-mentp.

If starching frequently, clean the dis-penser compartment and especiallythe siphon tube and conditionerchannel on a regular basis. See"Cleaning and care - Cleaning thedetergent dispenser drawer".

Manually adding liquid or powderstarch during a programme

^ Prepare the starch solution as statedon the packet.

^ Select the programme required andalso push in the "Starchm" button. The programme and the "time left" in-dicator will pause before the lastrinse.

Disconnect the machine from themains electricity supply and with-draw the plug from the socket priorto cleaning the machine.

Cleaning the machine^ Clean the casing with a mild

non-abrasive detergent or soap andwater. Wipe dry with a soft cloth.

^ Clean the control panel with a dampcloth and wipe dry with a soft cloth.

^ The drum and any other stainlesssteel components can be cleanedusing a suitable proprietary stain-less-steel cleaning agent. Follow themanufacturer’s instructions on thepackaging.

Do not use abrasive cleaningagents, disinfecting agents or sol-vents.These can cause considerable dam-age to the machine because of thechemicals they contain.

Avoid contact of stainless steel sur-faces (front, lid, casing) with liquidcleaning and disinfecting agentswhich contain chlorine or sodiumhypochlorite. These agents canhave a corrosive effect on stainlesssteel. Aggressive vapours contain-ing chlorine bleach can also be cor-rosive. Do not store open containersof these agents near the machine.

Extra cleaning

If you wash mainly with low tempera-tures it is a good idea to carry out a hotwash approx. every six weeks. This willhelp prevent deposits and unpleasantsmells building up in the machinewhich can occur when washing ismainly done at low temperatures. If youhave no reason to wash occasionally atthis high temperature, then run a Cot-tons 95ºC programme with detergentbut no laundry at regular intervals.

Cleaning and care

26

Page 27: Operating Washer WS5427 MC23

Cleaning the drainage systemCheck the fluff filter, initially after 3 - 4washes to ascertain how often it is likelyto require cleaning.

Under normal conditions approx. 2litres of water will drain out of the ma-chine when the fluff filter is removed.

However, if the drain outlet is blocked, more water will be retained in the ma-chine (max. 30 litres).

Caution: if laundry has been washedat a high temperature, water drain-ing out of the machine will still behot. Danger of scalding or burning.

^ Switch the machine off (either openthe door or switch off at the mainsand withdraw the plug).

^ Open the drain access flap.

^ Place a suitable container (2 litres)underneath the drain fixture.

^ Turn the fluff filter lid round 2-3 times.Do not take it right out.Approx. 2 litres of water will drain out.

If there is a blockage more water thanthis will drain out and the container willneed to be emptied several times.

To stop the flow of water:

^ Secure the fluff filter back into posi-tion.

^ Empty the container and repeat theprocess until all the water has beenemptied

Cleaning and care

27

Page 28: Operating Washer WS5427 MC23

^ Once the flow of water ceases, re-move the fluff filter completely andclean it.

^ Remove any foreign objects (buttons, coins etc.) and fluff.

^ Turn the impeller by hand to checkthat it is free to rotate.Any foreign object causing an ob-struction must be removed.

^ Clean the inside of fluff filter housing.

Remove any deposits of limescale anddetergent or foreign objects from thethread of the filter housing and filterunit.

^ Put the fluff filter back in place andsecure.

Make sure the fluff filter is securelytightened. Otherwise there is a dan-ger of water leakage during use.

Cleaning the filters in the waterinletThe machine has the following filters toprotect the inlet valves:

– in the free end of any water inlet hose

– in the water inlet valve(s) for connect-ing the hose(s) to the machine.

To clean the filter in the inlet hose:

^ Turn off the stopcock.

^ Carefully unscrew the knurled cou-pling connecting the inlet hose to thecheck valve which is attached to thestopcock (see "Plumbing").

^ Remove the rubber seal from the re-cess.

^ Using pointed pliers, take hold of theplastic filter bar, remove the filter andclean.

^ Put the filter and seal back in the re-verse order and reconnect the hoseto the check valve. Turn on the stop-cock and check the connection iswatertight.

The filters in the inlet hose should bechecked and cleaned approx. every 6months.Inspect the inlet hose as it is subjectedto high pressure while the machine is inoperation. The hose should be re-placed if there is any sign of damagesuch as stress cracks in the surface. If replacing the inlet hose only use ahose tested to withstand a pressure ofat least 70 bar. Miele original hoses aretested to this standard.

To clean the filter in the water inletvalve:^ Using pliers, carefully loosen the

ribbed plastic nut on the inlet valve, and unscrew.

^ Using pointed pliers withdraw theplastic filter by the bar (see illustra-tion).

^ Clean the plastic filter.^ Put back in the reverse order.

Both filters - one in the pressurehose union and one in the water inletvalve must always be replaced afterbeing cleaned.

Fault Possible cause Remedy

There are whiteresidues whichlook like powderdetergent on darkcoloured laundry.

The detergent con-tained compounds(zeolites) to aid watersoftening which are notsoluble in water. Thesehave ended up on thelaundry.

– Try and brush off the residueswith a soft brush once the laun-dry is dry.

– Use a liquid detergent to washdark coloured textiles. Liquiddetergents usually contain nozeolites.

Grey greasy parti-cles cling towashed laundry.

Insufficient amounts ofdetergent were used tobreak down the parti-cles of grease in heavilysoiled laundry.

– Add more detergent.– Before washing the next load

run a COTTONS 95°Cprogramme with powder deter-gent but without a load.

Textiles have par-ticularly greasysoiling.

– Select a programme withpre-wash.Use liquid detergent for thepre-wash.

Fault Possible cause Remedy

The laundry is ei-ther not spun atall or not spunsatisfactorily.

The "No final spin"k buttonwas pushed in.

The spin speed selectedwas too low.

Spin the load using a higherspin speed.

The machine was not able todistribute the laundry loadevenly. To protect the ma-chine, laundry was eitheronly spun at a reducedspeed or not at all.

Always make up mixed loadsconsisting of large and smallitems.

Large items which tangle orroll up in the drum (e.g. bathmats) can cause an imbal-ance during the spin cycle.

For safety reasons, the ma-chine does not spin if this isthe case. Attempts to buildup spin speed are repeated, however, until the time allo-cated to spinning has ex-pired.

Check whether– the drainage system is

clogged. Clean as de-scribed in "Cleaning andcare" - "Cleaning thedrainage system".

The machineshakes during thespin cycle.

The most likely cause is thatthe four machine feet are notresting securely on the floor.

Level the machine (see "In-stallation" - "Levelling the ma-chine").

Weak floorboards not onlylead to excessive noise butalso to shaking during thespin cycle .

See "Installation" - "Installa-tion surface.

Installation surfaceA concrete floor is the most suitablesurface for a washing machine, beingfar less prone to vibration during thespin cycle than wooden floorboards ora carpeted surface.

Please note the following points:

^ The machine must be level and se-curely positioned.

Do not install the machine near or di-rectly above an open gully or floordrain. Moisture from these can pene-trate the machine and damage theelectric components.

^ To avoid vibrations during spinningthe machine should not be installedon soft floor coverings.

If installing on a wooden floor joist:

^ We recommend a plywoood base (atleast 70 x 60 x 3 cm).The base should span several joistsand be bolted to the joists and notonly to the floorboards. Check for thepresence of pipes and cables first.

If possible, install the machine in a cor-ner, as this is usually the most stablepart of the floor.

If the machine is installed on araised plinth, it must be secured us-ing the butt straps supplied with themachine.Follow the installation instructionssupplied.

Installation

Lift the machine from its packagingbase and move it to its site.

Please note:

^ Do not lift the machine by the drumdoor.

Ensure that the machine feet and thefloor area are dry to prevent the ma-chine from slipping during the spincycle.

Levelling the machine

The machine must stand perfectly levelon all four feet to ensure safe andproper operation.

The four adjustable feet are used tolevel the machine. All four feet arescrewed in when the machine is deliv-ered.

Screwing out and adjusting the feet.

^ Gently tip the machine and prop it upusing a solid wood wedge for exam-ple, to ensure stability.

Make sure the machine does not slipas this could cause injury.

^ Using a screwdriver loosen foot 1 to-gether with counter nut 2 by turning itanti-clockwise, and unscrew to therequired height.

^ Put the machine back on all four feet.

^ Use a spirit level to check the ma-chine is standing level.

^ Holding foot 1 securely with a pipewrench use a screwdriver to turncounternut 2 in a clockwise directionuntil it is held firmly up against thehousing.

All four counternuts must be tight-ened firmly up against the housing. Please also check this for the feetwhich did not need adjustment. Oth-erwise there is the danger of the ma-chine moving about.

PlumbingThis machine is approved for all UK ap-plications as suitable for category 5.Product is listed in the WRAS regula-tions advisory scheme directory and issuitable for direct connection to mainsdrinking water. No special plumbing ar-rangements e.g. break tanks are re-quired.

A Water Council approved check valveis supplied in the accessories packprovided with this machine. It should befitted in between the stopcock(s) andthe water inlet hose(s).

The machine should be connected tothe water supply in accordance with lo-cal and national safety regulations.

Connection to the water supply shouldbe carried out by a qualified plumberand should incorporate a stopcock witha 3/4" thread.

The machine is supplied as standardwith two hoses, for connection to a hotand cold water supply.

Connection to cold water supply

The approx. 1.5 m long 3/8" pressurehose (blue stripes) should be con-nected to the check valve on the stop-cock via the 3/4" threaded union. This hose is not suitable for connectionto a hot water supply.

Make sure that the washer sits correctlyin the union.

The connection points are subject towater pressure. Turn on the stopcockslowly and check for leaks. Correct thepositioning of the washers and screwunions if appropriate.

If replacing the inlet hose only use ahose tested to withstand pressure ofat least 70 bar. This also applies to allfittings used. Miele original parts aretested to this standard.

Longer hoses 2.5 or 4.0 m in length areavailable as optional extras.

The pressure hose and solenoid inletvalve are designed for a water flowpressure of between 1 and 10 bar. Athigher water pressures it is essential tofit a reducer valve.

There is a minimum flow pressure of 1bar if 5 litres of water flow into a suit-able container in 15 seconds.

Installation

46

Page 47: Operating Washer WS5427 MC23

Connection to hot watersupply

To keep electricity consumption costsdown this machine can be connectedto a (ring) piped hot water supply. Themaximum temperature must not exceed70°C.

It is not economical to run it from an in-dividual hot water supply if it is not incontinuous use, as the water in the sup-ply pipes cools down and more energywould be required to reheat the water.

For operational reasons the machinemust not be connected to hot wateronly.

For hot water connection the same con-ditions apply as for cold water connec-tion.

If the machine is not installed for hotwater connection:

^ Both inlet hoses can be connected tocold water using an adapter piece, without the machine being repro-grammed.

or

^ unscrew inlet hose (red stripes)

^ plug the inlet connection with the capsupplied.

^ The machine will have to be repro-grammed by an authorised servicedealer.

Machines with a drain pump

The machine drains via a drain pumpwith a max. delivery head of 1 metre. The 1.5 metre long drain hose must notbe kinked as this would restrict drain-age.The hook in the end of the drain hosecan be turned or taken off if required.

The drain hose may be connected asfollows:

– Direct into a sink (drain pump versionLP).Hook the hose over the edge of thesink and secure . Make sure that thewater can flow away freely to avoidflooding and to prevent water frombeing sucked back into the machine.

– Connected to a plastic drain pipewith a rubber seal. There is no needto use a non-return valve.

– Directed into a standpipe, (seal thehose into the pipe to avoid floodingin case of the drainpipe beingblocked).

– Directly into a floor drain (gully).

The drain hose can be extended to 5metres.The accessories required can be pur-chased from the Miele Spare PartsDept.

For draining the water away with a de-livery head over 1 metre (and up to amax. of 1.8 metres) a 2nd "Duo-drainpump" can be connected. Contact yourMiele Dealer or the Professional SalesDept.
