Operating Systems

Outlines

• Operating System

• Types of Operating System

• Device Dependent Program

• Device Independent Program

• Network Operating System/ Server Operating System

What is Operating System (OS)?

• An operating system (OS) is a set of programs containing instructions that work together to coordinate all the activities among computer hardware resources.

Types of Operating Systems

• There are basically two Types:

1. Device Dependent Program

2. Device Independent Program

Device Dependent Program

• A device-dependent program is one that runs only on a specific type of computer.

• Proprietary Software is privately owned and limited to a specific vendor or computer model.

• Limitations of a software (such as most Linux, Mac, and Windows programs) that prevent it from running on more than one platform, or which requires a specific hardware to perform its functions.

• A device-dependent software cannot easily be moved from one type of computer to another, and usually requires large-scale modifications or rewriting of the original program.

Device Independent Programs

• Device-independent programs are those programs that runs on computers provided by variety of manufacturers.

• The trend today is towards device-independent programs.

• The big advantage of device-independent operating systems is you can retain existing application software and data files even if you change computer models or vendors.

Categories of Operating System

• The three basic categories that exist today are:

1. Stand-alone Operating Systems

2. Network Operating System (NOS)/ Server Operating Systems

3. Embedded Operating Systems

Stand-alone Operating Systems

• A stand-alone operating system is a completeoperating system that works on adesktop computer, notebook computer, ormobile computing device.

• Some are client operating systems that work in conjunction with a server operating system, with or without a network.

• Examples of Stand-alone Operating systems are Windows Vista, Mac OS X, UNIX and Linux.

Network Operating System

• A network operating system/ server operating system is an OS that is designed specifically to support a network, and typically resides on a server.

• Network operating systems are designed specifically to support all sizes of networks, including medium to large-sized businesses and Web servers.

• Examples of Server Operating System are Windows Server 2012 R2, Solaris and Novell NetWare.

Embedded Operating Systems

• The operating system on mobile devices and many consumer electronics, called an embedded operating system.

• Examples of embedded operating system are Windows Embedded CE, Windows Mobile, Palm OS, iPhone OS, BlackBerry OS, Google Android and Symbian OS.

Conclusion

• First of all we discussed about operating system and then the types of operating system, device dependent programs and device independent programs.

• Then the basic categories of OS like stand-alone operating system, network operating system/ server operating system and embedded operating system.
