What is Globalization?• Globalization (or globalisation) is the
process of international integration arising from the interchange of world views, products, ideas and other aspects of culture.
Continued
• - “Processes by which goods, services, capital, people, information, and ideas flow across national borders.” (Grewal/Levy)
• - “Trend toward greater economic, cultural, political, and technological interdependence among national institutions and economies.” (Wild/Wild/Han)
Continued
• Globalization is a new buzzword that has come to dominate the world since the nineties of the last century with the end of the cold war and the break-up of the former Soviet Union.
• The term implies worldly integration of various cultures, styles, economic policies, ideas, etc.
• It must not be confused with “making things common around the world”. It is an integration, not simulation.

Access to New Markets
Globalization Involving Us All• Nearly 23 trillion dollars accounts for the
total value of imports/exports that cross national borders each year.
• Your Everyday Life:- Wake up to a GE alarm clock made in China.- Slip on Adidas sandals made in Indonesia.- Put your American Eagle clothes on from Mexico.- Unplug your Nokia phone made in the U.S. and Taiwan.- Hop into your Toyota made in Kentucky.- Listen to Coldplay from England.- Grap a Starbuck’s coffee with beans harvested in Columbia.
Implementing Technology tools to promote Globalization
• Facebook: The ability to communicate with people all over the world.
• Skype (video chatting): The ability to have a live visual meeting with people all over the world.
• Twitter: The ability to communicate and share information with
people all over the world.• WikiSpaces: The ability to share ideas, thoughts and images with
people all over the world.
• Phones: The ability to verbally and/or visually communicate with people all over the world.
Continued
• Microsoft Office: The ability to verbally and visually communicate with people through a office setting through email, live chat and instant messaging.
• WebQuest: Teachers can create a WebQuest for students to participate in an educational journey on various topics while using the world wide web.
• Podcast: Teachers can create a podcast for students to listen to using media. Teachers can use this for creating assignments and students can listen to the podcast as many times as they want.
Globalization and Marketing
• Expands the market in which consumers buy from
- Access EBay sellers from across the globe.
• Two Strategies for Businesses:
- Global Strategy• Reduce marketing costs by
standardizing product and marketing strategy.
- Multi-National Strategy• Adapt products and marketing
strategies in each national market to suit local preferences.
Globalization and Christian Ethics
• Unethical Problems:- Widening gap of rich and poor
• Environmental Regulations:- Unsanitary sweatshops- Emission of harmful toxins
• Exploits Labor Standards- Reduction of wages- Long hours (12 or more)- No benefits
Effects of Globalization
1. Changed Food Supply• Food supply is no longer tied to the seasons. We can
buy food anywhere in the world at any time of the year.
Continued
2. Less job Security• In the global economic economy jobs are becoming
more temporary and insecure.• A survey of American workers showed that people
now hold 7 to 10 jobs over their working life.
Continued
3. Damage to the Environment• More trade means more transport which uses more
fossil fuels and causes pollution.• Climate change is a serious threat to our future.
Impact on the LaborPositive effects• Increased job opportunities.• Upgraded education
system.• Increased training.
Negative effects• Job displacement• Loss of industries or
economic groups.• Lowered labor standards.• Degreased union power.
“Bright” & “Dark” side of Globalization
Bright Side…
• Globalization lets countries do what they can do best. If, for example, you buy cheap steel from another country you don’t have to make your own steel. You can focus on computers or others things.
• Globalization gives you a larger market. You can sell more goods and make more money. You can create more jobs.
• Consumers also profit from globalization. Products become cheaper and you can get new goods more quickly.
Dark Side…
• Globalization causes unemployment in industrialized countries because firms move their factories to places where they can get cheaper workers.
• Globalization may lead to more environmental problems. A company may want to build factories in other countries because environmental laws are not as strict as they are at home. Poor countries in Third World may have to cut down more trees so that they can sell wood to richer countries.
Continued
• Globalization can lead to financial problems. In the 1970s and 80s countries like Mexico, Thailand, Indonesia or Brazil got a lot of money from investors who hoped they could build up new businesses there. These new companies often didn’t work, so they had to close down and investors pulled out their money.
• Human, animal and plants diseases can spread more quickly through Globalization.
Conclusion
• There are many different technological uses that promote globalization. As you can see from the examples given, technology is a big part of changing the way people communicate and learn in the world today. People are starting to rely on technology more and more to communicate globally instead of traveling to places that are far away. Places that used to seem worlds away are now within reach by the click of a button. Globalization has different effects. It has two sides that has been discussed above.
Thank you for concentration…
