Economical usageThe key to good wash results is findingthe correct combination of detergentand temperature, and then allowing thewashing machine to optimize theirusage through its programming. Pro-gram lengths can vary for this reason.

With the “Hydromatic” system, thedrum can revolve at various speeds.Faster and slower agitation speeds, along with pauses for soaking, com-bine to ensure excellent results.

The automatic load control feature en-sures the correct water level for thetype of fabric and load being washed(even though it may appear as if thereis too little water in the drum!).

Because of the accurately balanceddrum and special sound insulation, ma-chine noise is minimal while operating.

The fully electronic controls offer a com-bination of simple operation with manyoptional features. For instance, since amain wash generally gives good resultsfor a normal load, the pre-wash cyclehas been made a user selectable op-tion, saving time, water and energy overolder full cycle machines.

EconomyFor optimum economical usage, re-member the following tips:

– The automatic load control featurewill adjust the water level for loadsup to 11 lbs (5 kg). Washing with themaximum load specified for eachprogram uses water and energy tothe best advantage.

– Use only the correct amount of deter-gent required for the water hardnessin your area. Miele recommends theuse of powder detergents, as theircharacteristics allow them to performbetter in this machine than liquiddetergents.

If the wash is not heavily stained, selecta lower temperature than indicated onthe wash care label.

Preparing the LaundryThe headings numbered (1,2,3,...)show the operating sequence and canbe used as a brief guide.

Before washing

1 Prepare the wash load

Empty all pockets.

Foreign objects left in pockets (e.g.nails, coins, paper clips, etc.) cancause damage to clothes and themachine.

Sort the laundry

Most garments have a Fabric carelabel in the collar or side seam. Sort thelaundry by care label and color. Only wash items that are labeled ma-chine washable by the manufacturer.

Dark fabrics often contain “excess dye”and should be washed separately sev-eral times before being included in amixed load.

Delicate fabrics should be washed sep-arately using a delicates program.

Only wash wool or wool mixtures if theyare labeled machine washable on thetextile care label.

Pre-treat the laundry

Badly soiled areas (e.g. collars andcuffs) and water soluble stains can bepre-treated with bar soap, stainremover, or detergent mixed into a solu-tion or paste.Do not use detergents containing sol-vents in the machine.

Adding detergentPowder detergent should be added tocompartment j (main wash) and com-partment i (pre wash, if necessary) atthe beginning of each wash cycle. Dueto the Miele “Eco-System”, 1/3 to 1/2 themanufacturer’s recommended amountof detergent is generally sufficient forexcellent wash results.

Do not use chlorine bleach!

Water is taken in through compartmentj during the main wash. If your wateris extremely hard (above 400 ppm cal-cium carbonate) and the capacity ofcompartment j is insufficient for theamount of detergent needed, a ServiceTechnician can reprogram the machineso that water and detergent can alsobe taken in through compartment i.

For small loads:

– Gradually reduce the amount ofdetergent used with each small load.

– Check the wash results and the con-dition of the laundry.

– If the laundry is not clean or if it isgray or hard to the touch, addslightly more detergent the next timeyou use the machine.

It is important to add the cor-rect amount of detergent, be-cause...

...too little detergent can result in:

– gray laundry

– grease/stains not being removed

– lime deposits on the heater elementsand drum (in hard water areas).

...too much detergent can result in:

– excessive foam

– low level of agitation

– poor cleaning and rinsing results.

Water Softeners

If you wish to use a water softener tocut down on detergent usage in hardwater areas:

– add the amount of detergent necess-ary for a soft water area.

– Add the specified amount of watersoftener per the manufacturers re-commendation.

Always add the detergent first, in com-partments i and j followed by thesoftener, to ensure that both areproperly dispensed.

Adding detergent

12

Page 13: Operating instructions for the W 1930i Washing Machine · sons when using your appliance, fol-low basic precautions, including the following: 1. Read all instructions before using

Adding fabric softener or starchIf fabric softener is desired, it will workmore effectively and be gentler on theclothes if it is dispensed in the finalrinse cycle of the wash, rather than inthe tumble dryer through the use of sof-tener sheets. To automatically dispensefabric softener:

Open the lid of compartment p.

Pour an amount of liquid fabric sof-tener into compartment p accordingto the manufacturer’s instructions.Do not exceed the maximum fill levelmarked inside the compartment, asany excess will prematurely activatethe siphon and be wasted.

Close the compartment lid and pushin the dispenser drawer.

The softener will automatically be dis-pensed during the last rinse cycle.

At the end of the program a smallamount of water will normally remain incompartment p. A high water level inthis compartment, however, may indi-cate that the siphon is clogged or the

dispenser drawer was opened duringthe last rinse cycle, thereby interruptingthe distribution of fabric softener. In thiscase, the siphon tube should becleaned as described on Page 21.

StarchStarching can be done as a separatecycle (see below) or can be included inany wash program during the final rinse.

Never mix fabric softener and starchtogether in compartment p. This cancause the overflow system to malfunc-tion.

If starch is used for shirts, blouses, table cloths, napkins, etc., pour the liquid starch into compartment p (usethe same procedure as for fabric sof-tener).

Using the “Starch” program to dis-pense liquid starch.

– Prepare the starch solution in accor-dance with the manufacturer’s in-structions and pour it into compart-ment p.

– Use the normal water level (WaterPlus button “out”) when starching sothat the solution will have the maxi-mum effect.

“Without final spin” can be selected toreduce fabric creasing.

Final spin:The maximum spin speed is held constant for a fixed period of time.In the program PERMANENT PRESS, WOOLENS and Fine rinse the spin speed is automaticallylimited to 900 rpm and in the FINE/DELICATES program to 600 rpm, even if the selector has beenset to a higher speed. A lower speed can also be selected.

Woolens:Wool is susceptible to damage when it is wet. Agitation times during the program are shorter, and the drum rotates slower.

“Without final spin”:At the end of the final rinse the wash remains suspended in water if the SPIN SPEED SETTING isset to “Without final spin”. This helps reduce creasing if the laundry will not be removed immedi-ately at the end of the cycle.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS InstallationInstallation surfaceExperience has shown that a concretefloor is the most suitable surface for awashing machine. Concrete floors arefar less prone to vibration during thespin cycle than wooden floors.

Please note the following points:

The machine must be level and se-curely positioned.

To avoid vibrations during spinning, the machine should not be installedon soft floor coverings.

If installation must be on a woodenjoist floor, we recommend the use ofa plywood base at least 11/4" thickand 23 5/8" X 23 5/8" wide (30mm X600mm X 600mm). Ideally the baseshould be large enough to span sev-eral joists and should be anchoredto the joists and not just the floor-boards.

As a general rule, we recommendthe installation of the machine (orwasher/dryer stack) in the corner ofa room where the stability of the flooris at its greatest.

If the machine is installed on araised platform, it should be securedusing retaining clips (available fromthe Miele Parts Dept.). If installed ona masonary or concrete base, thebase should be provided with a rim1/2" to 3/4" (12-20 mm) high.

InstallationLift the machine from its shipping palletand move it to the installation site. Please note:

Do not lift the machine by the drumdoor.

Ensure that the machine feet and thefloor are dry to prevent slippage dur-ing the spin cycle.

– For installation under countertopsthat are 35 7/16" (900 mm) or moreabove the floor, one or more 2"spacer frames, Part # 1542631, maybe required.

– Spacer frames (with installation in-structions) can be purchased fromyour Miele dealer or the Miele PartsDepartment.

Matching the control panel tothe adjacent washer frontsThe height of the control panel can beadjusted in one of two ways:

by tightening or loosening the nuts toraise or lower the adapter strips asneeded, orby adding or removing adaper strips.

The attached adapter strips can becompressed up to 3/8" (10 mm) by tight-ening the 4 nuts located under the bot-tom adapter strip. If the control panelneeds to be shortened by more than3/8" (10 mm), one or more adapterstrips can be removed.

The control panel height can be ex-tended an additional 1" (25 mm) by ad-ding additional adapter strips and ex-tension bolts. These parts are availablefrom your Miele dealer or the MieleParts Department.

ImportantAfter the final adjustment has beenmade, cut the plastic bolt flush with thebottom of the lowest adapter.
