Important safety instructionsWARNING - To reduce the risk of fire,electric shock, or injury to personswhile using your appliance, follow basicsafety precautions, including the follow-ing:

1. Read the instructions before usingthe appliance.

2. Do not wash materials that havebeen previously cleaned or soakedin gasoline, dry cleaning solvents, orother flammable or explosive sub-stances. Do not add gasoline, drycleaning solvents, or other flamm-able or explosive substances to thewash water. These substances giveoff vapors that could ignite orexplode.

3. Do not allow children to play on or inthe appliance. Close supervision isnecessary when the appliance isused near children.

4. Before discarding an old applianceunplug the unit and remove thepower cord. Also, remove the door tothe wash compartment to preventif from becoming a hazard.

5. Do not reach into the appliance ifthe drum is moving.

6. This appliance should never be in-stalled or stored outdoors.

7. Do not tamper with the controls.

8. Do not repair or replace any part ofthe appliance, or attempt any servic-ing unless specifically recommendedin these Operating instructions.

9. Do not add gasoline, dry-cleaningsolvents, or other flammable orexplosive substances to the washwater. These subtances give offvapors that could ignite or explode.

10. Under certain conditions, hydro-gen gas may be produced in a hotwater system that has not beenused for 2 weeks or more.HYDROGEN GAS IS EXPLOSIVE.If the hot water system has notbeen used for such a period, be-fore using the washing machine,turn on all hot water faucets andlet the water flow from each forseveral minutes. This will releaseany built up hydrogen gas.As the gas is flammable, do notsmoke or use an open flameduring this time.

Disposal of the packingmaterialThe transport and protective packing ismostly manufactured from the followingrecycled or recyclable materials:

– Polypropylene (PP) strapping

Rather than throwing these materialsaway, please take them to your commu-nity recycling center.

Disposal of your old applianceOld appliances contain materials thatcan be recycled. Please contact yourlocal recycling center about the possi-bility of recycling these materials.

Before discarding an old appliance,unplug it from the outlet and cut offits power cord and remove anydoors to prevent it from becoming ahazard.

Before using the first timeSince all Miele washing machines aretested for proper operation before leav-ing the factory, some residual watermay be left inside.

As this water is not visible, we recom-mend you perform the following stepsbefore you use your new machine forthe first time, or if it has been in storagefor more than a few weeks betweenuses.

^ Do not put any laundry in the ma-chine.

^ Add a small amount of detergent tocompartmentj.

^ Turn “On” the machine.

^ Press the “Rapid wash” button.

^ Turn the dial to “COTTONS 140°F”.

The machine will start to run and willflush out any residual water that may beinside.

Optimal usageThe key to good wash results is findingthe correct combination of detergentand temperature, and then allowing thewashing machine to optimize their us-age through its programming. Programlengths can vary for this reason.

The fully electronic controls offer a com-bination of simple operation with manyoptional features. For instance, since amain wash generally gives good resultsfor a normal load, the pre-wash cyclehas been made a user selectable op-tion, saving time,water and energy overolder full cycle machines.

With the „Hydromatic“ system, thedrum can revolve at various speeds.Faster and slower agitation speedsalong with pauses for soaking, combineto ensure excellent wash results.

The automatic load control feature en-sures the correct water level for thetype of fabric and load being washed(even though it may appear as if thereis too little water in the drum!).

Operational noise, no matter what pro-gram is selected, is minimized throughthe use of an accurately balanced drumand special sound insulation.

EconomyTo conserve energy the following tips:

– The automatic load control featurewill adjust the water level for loads upto 13 lbs (6kg). Washing with themaximum load specified for eachprogram water and energy saves.

– Use the correct amount of detergentrequired for the water hardness inyour area. Miele recommends theuse of powder detergents, as theircharacteristics allow them to performbetter in this machine than liquid de-tergents.

If the wash is not heavily stained, selecta lower temperature than indicated onthe wash care label.

Preparing the LaundryThe headings numbered (1,2,3,...)show the operating sequence and canbe used as a brief guide.

Before washing

1Prepare the wash load

^ Empty all pockets.

Foreign objects accidentally left inpockets (e.g. nails, coins, paperclips, etc.) can damage clothes andthe machine.

^ Sort the laundry

Only wash items that are labeled ma-chine washable by the manufacturer.Some garments will have a Fabric carelabel in the collar or side seam. If so,sort the laundry by care label and color.

Dark fabrics often contain “excess dye”and should be washed separately sev-eral times before being included in amixed load.

Delicate fabrics should be washed sep-arately using the FINE/DELICATES pro-gram.

Only wash wool or wool mixtures if theyare labeled machine washable on thetextile care label.

^ Pre-treat the laundry

Badly soiled areas (e.g. collars andcuffs) and water soluble stains can bepre-treated with bar soap, stain re-mover, or detergent mixed into a solu-tion or paste.

Do not use detergents containing sol-vents in the machine.

^ For curtains: Remove any leadweights or strips.

Woolens and knitted garments shouldbe turned inside out if recommendedby the manufacturer.

3Load the machine

Unfold the laundry and place it in thedrum. For best results we recommendwashing mixed loads consisting of bothlarge and small items. This improveswashing effectiveness and helps dis-tribute the load evenly to keep the ma-chine stable and reduce noise duringspinning.

Do not attempt to remove laundryfrom the machine if the drum is turn-ing. You may seriously injure your-self. If the drum turns with the dooropen, contact the Miele Service De-partment.

4Remove the wash.

5Check the folds in the door seal forany small articles such as buttonsor nails which may be lodgedthere.

Make sure the drum is empty bymanually turning it completelyaround. Items inadvertently left inthe machine may be damaged (e.g.shrink) or cause discoloration ofother laundry during the next washcycle.

6Close the drum door.

End of Program

Changing the program sequenceTo cancel a program:

^ Turn the program selector to“Finish/Start”.

To interrupt a program:

^ Press the “ON/OFF” buttton.

To continue the program, turn the ma-chine back on.

To change an incorrectly selectedprogram:

^ Turn the program selector switch to“Finish/Start”.

When only the “On” lamp is lit, a newprogram can be selected.

To change a program which has been“locked” using the Child Safety feature,see the “Programmable functions” sec-tion.

To omit a program stage:

A program stage must first be reachedto be omitted. When the sequence indi-cator lamp of the program stage youwould like to omit illuminates:

^ Turn the program selector to“Finish/Start”

As soon as the program sequence indi-cator lamp for the stage you wish to en-ter starts flashing:

^ Turn the program selector switch tothe desired program.

Adding detergentPowder detergent should be added tocompartmentj (main wash) andcompartmenti (pre wash, if selected)at the beginning of each wash cycle.Due to the design of the Miele 1/3 to 1/2the manufacturer’s recommendedamount of detergent is plenty for excel-lent wash results.

Do not use chlorine bleach!

Water is taken in through compartmentj during the main wash. If your wateris extremely hard (above 400 ppm cal-cium carbonate) and compartmentjis too small for the amount of detergentneeded, a service technician can re-program the machine so that water anddetergent can also enter through com-partmenti.

For small loads:

– Proportionately reduce the amount ofdetergent used for each small load.

– Check the wash results and the con-dition of the laundry.

– If the laundry is not clean or if it isgray or hard to the touch, addslightly more detergent the next timeyou use the machine.

It is important to use the cor-rect amount of detergent, be-cause...

...too little detergent can result in:

– gray laundry

– grease/stains not being removed

– lime deposits on the heating ele-ments and drum (in hard water ar-eas).

...too much detergent can result in:

– excessive foam

– insufficient agitation

– poor cleaning and rinsing results.

Water Softeners

If you wish to use a water softener tocut down on detergent usage in hardwater areas:

– add the amount of detergent neces-sary for a soft water area.

– Add the specified amount of watersoftener according to the manufac-turer’s instructions.

Always add the detergent first, in com-partmentsi andj followed by thesoftener, to ensure that both are prop-erly dispensed.

Adding fabric softener or starchIf fabric softener is desired, it will workmore effectively and be gentler on theclothes if it is dispensed in the finalrinse cycle of the wash, rather than inthe dryer with softener sheets. To auto-matically dispense fabric softener:

^ Open the lid of compartmentp.

^ Pour an amount of liquid fabric soft-ener into compartmentp accordingto the manufacturer’s instructions. Donot exceed the maximum fill levelmarked inside the compartment, asthe excess will prematurely activatethe siphon and be wasted.

^ Close the compartment lid and pushin the dispenser drawer.

The softener will automatically be dis-pensed during the final rinse cycle.

At the end of the program a smallamount of water will normally remain incompartmentp. A high water level inthis compartment, however, may indi-cate that the dispenser drawer wasopened, or the siphon is clogged. Inthis case, the siphon tube should becleaned (see “Cleaning and Care”).

StarchStarching can be performed separately(see below) or can be included in anywash program as part of the final rinse.

Never mix fabric softener and starch to-gether in compartmentp. This canclog the dispenser.

If starch is used for shirts, blouses, ta-ble cloths, napkins, etc., pour theliquid starch into compartmentp (usethe same procedure as for fabric soft-ener).

Using the “Starch” program to dis-pense liquid starch.

– Prepare the starch solution accord-ing to the manufacturer’s instructionsand pour it into compartmenti.

– Use the normal water level (WaterPlus button “out”) when starching sothat the solution will have the maxi-mum effect.

“Without final spin” can be selected toreduce fabric creasing.

Interim rinse:Additional water flows into the drum, and the suds are cooled slightly.

Graduated spin:The speed is gradually increased, until the final spin speed is reached.

Final spin:The maximum spin speed is held constant for a fixed period of time.In the program PERMANENT PRESS, WOOLENS and Fine rinse the spin speed is automatically limitedto 900 rpm and in the FINE/DELICATES program to 600 rpm, even if the selector has been set to ahigher speed. A lower speed can also be selected.

Woolens:Wool is susceptible to damage when it is wet. Agitation times during this program are shorter, and thedrum rotation is slower.

„Without final spin“:At the end of the final rinse the wash remains suspended in water if the SPIN SPEED SETTING is set to„Without final spin“. This helps to reduce creasing if the laundry will not be removed immediately uponcompletion of the cycle.

“Pre-wash”– Use for heavily soiled or stained

laundry items.

– Available in the “COTTONS”, “PER-MANENT PRESS” and “FINE /DELICATES” programs.

The required amount of detergentshould be added to compartmenti.

“Water plus”Slightly increases the water level, bestused;

– For particularly delicate fabrics in ad-dition to the “Gentle wash” option,

“Rapid wash”– Offers a quick wash cycle (approx.

38 minutes)– Can be used with or without a

pre-wash. “Rapid wash” is availablein all programs.

To operate:

1Push in the ON/OFF button to turn onthe machine.

2Push in the Pre-wash button if de-sired.

3Push in the Rapid wash button. No-tice the thick gray ring surroundingthe button. This gray ring corre-sponds to the gray ring surroundingthe COTTONS, PERMANENT PRESS,and FINE / DELICATES programs onthe Selector switch. As long as theprogram selected is within this ring,the actual wash times will be close towhat is displayed.

Delay start/Time remaining indicatorTime display “H:min”The Time display has a dual function.

– It shows the time remaining in thewash program, and

– it shows the programmed “Start de-lay” remaining before the programbegins.

Delay Start

Upon turning on the machine, the “De-lay start” lamp will be blinking. The startof the program can be delayed up to 9hours and 30 minutes.

Entering the start delay:

– Press the button to the left of the “De-lay start” lamp as many times asnecessary until the desired time de-lay appears. Each time the button ispressed, the delay will increase by30 minutes.

Select the program

– The display will begin counting back-wards in one minute increments. The“Delay start” lamp will remain lit.

Program start

– When the delay time reaches zero,the “Time remaining” lamp will illumi-nate, and the “Delay start” lamp willgo out. The display will now show thetime remaining in the wash program.

Deleting the start delay

– When the display reaches “9 h 30min”, press the button to the left ofthe “Delay start” lamp and the delaywill be deleted.

Remaining time

The display will count down the time re-maining in the wash program in oneminute increments as soon as:

– A program is selected, or

– The time delay reaches zero.

Cleaning and careTo clean the washing machine:^ Clean the casing using a mild non-

abrasive detergent or soap andwater, and wipe dry with a soft cloth.

^ Clean the control panel with a dampcloth.

^ If necessary, the drum can becleaned using a stainless steelcleaner according to the manufac-turer’s instructions. A stainless steelcleaner specially formulated for usein washing machines is availablefrom the Miele Technical Service De-partment.

Do not use abrasive cleaners or sol-vents.

Cleaning the detergent drawerShould the detergent drawer becomeclogged or dirty, it can be cleaned asfollows:

^ Pull the drawer out until it stops.

^ Press down the red release lever andpull the drawer out of the machine.

^ Clean the dispenser compartmentsand the fabric softener duct.

^ Remove the siphon tube from com-partmentp and rinse in warm water.

Cleaning the drain pump andlint trapOccasionally small objects, (buttons,coins, etc.), may find their way into thelint trap. If the machine does not draincompletely, the lint trap should bechecked to ensure that it is free of for-eign objects.

To clean the lint trap, remove the toolfrom behind the detergent dispenserdrawer.

^ Open the lint trap door.

^ Place a 2 quart (2l) capacity con-tainer underneath the drain tube.

^ Turn the lint trap lid counterclockwise2 - 3 times. Do not remove it. Approx.2 quarts (2 l) of water will drain out ofthe hose.

If the main drain hose is clogged, morewater will be retained in the machine(max. 6.5 gal/25l). In this case, tightenthe lint trap lid and empty the dish be-fore repeating the procedure as oftenas necessary.

Caution: If laundry has beenwashed at a high temperature, thewater draining out of the machinewill still be hot! Stop and allow it tocool before proceeding.

^ Once the flow of water stops, removethe lint trap and clean it.

^ Remove any foreign objects (e.g.buttons, coins, etc.) or lint.

^ Turn the drain pump impeller (in theback of the chamber) by hand tocheck that it rotates freely.

^ Clean the inside of the lint trap hous-ing.

Cleaning the water inlet filters.The washing machine has two water in-let filters to protect each inlet valve.

To clean the filter in the inlet hose:

^ Turn off the valve.

^ Carefully unscrew the inlet hose fromthe valve by turning the connectorcounterclockwise using a wrench ifnecessary.

^ Remove the rubber seal from theconnector.

^ Using needle nose pliers, grasp theplastic filter and pull it out of the hoseconnector. Clean the filter under run-ning water and carefully remove anylarge particles.

^ Replace the filter and seal and recon-nect the hose. Slowly turn on thevalve and check for leaks.

Inspect the inlet hose regularly. Thehose should be replaced if there aresmall cracks in the surface, or if it hasbeen otherwise damaged or cut.

If a replacement is necessary, use onlya genuine Miele inlet hose as otherhoses may burst under pressure.

To clean the filter in the inlet valve:

^ Using a wrench, carefully loosen andremove the plastic hose connector onthe inlet valve.

^ Using needle nose pliers, withdrawthe plastic filter by pulling on the bar(see illustration). Rinse under water toclean, and then replace.

The two filters - one at the pressurehose/valve connection and one atthe inlet connection to the solenoidvalve - must not be removed.

Liquid detergents do notcontain bleaching agents.They do not removestains as well as pow-dered detergents contain-ing non-chlorinatedbleaches.

– Use a general purposepowder detergent con-taining a bleachingagent.

– Pre-treat stains with astain remover.

. . . After washing pill-ing appears on the fab-ric?

This is a normaloccurance of everydaywear with some fabrics.

These fabrics must behandled with care. Washthem using theDELICATES programand/or select „Gentlewash“ in the future.

Opening the drum door duringa power failure

To prevent water from spilling on tothe floor, make certain the machineis drained before opening the door.

^ Turn off the washing machine.

^ Open the lint trap door and drain anywater as described in the Cleaningand care section.

^ Pull down the ring in the upper rightcorner of the access area, and thedoor will open.

Never reach into a rotating drum! Al-ways make sure the drum is station-ary before reaching in to removelaundry. Reaching into a movingdrum is extremely dangerous.

To check water pressure^ Place a bucket under the water sup-

ply valve.

^ Turn on the valve.

If 1 gallon (3.8 l) of water flows into thebucket in 15 seconds the water pres-sure is adequate.

Electricity– If there is any doubt about the electri-

cal supply or connection, consult aqualified electrician.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONSInstallation surface

Experience has shown that a concretefloor is the most suitable surface for awashing machine. Concrete floors areless prone to vibration during the spincycle than wooden floors.

Please note the following points:

^ The machine must be level and se-curely positioned.

^ To avoid vibration during spinning,the machine should not be installedon soft floor coverings.

^ If installation must be on a woodenjoist floor, we recommend the use ofa plywood base at least 11/4" thick by23 5/8" X 23 5/8" wide (30mm X600mm X 600mm). Ideally the baseshould be large enough to span sev-eral joists and should be anchored tothe joists and not just the floorboards.

^ As a general rule, we recommend theinstallation of the machine (orwasher/dryer stack) in the corner of aroom where the stability of the floor isgreatest.

^ If the machine is installed on a raisedplatform, it should be secured usingretaining clips (available from theMiele Technical Service Dept.). If in-stalled on a masonary or concretebase, the base should be providedwith a rim 1/2" to 3/4" (12-20 mm) high.

Installation

Lift the machine from its shipping palletand move it to the installation site.Please note:

^ Do not lift the machine by the drumdoor.

^ Ensure that the machine feet and thefloor are dry to prevent slippage dur-ing the spin cycle.

Removing the shipping struts

^ Turn the left shipping strut 90° coun-terclockwise.

^ Turn the right shipping strut 90°clockwise.

^ Withdraw the two struts together withthe support plate.

^ Plug the two holes with the plasticcaps provided.

Movement of the machine without theshipping struts in place should be keptto a minimum.

The shipping struts should bestored in a safe place for future use.They must be reinstalled before themachine is moved. Reinstallationcan be performed by reversing theabove procedure.

Leveling the machine

To ensure smooth operation, it is es-sential that the machine is level.

Failure to level the machine can resultin the machine “banging” in the spincycle or “walking” across the floor dur-ing operation. Energy and water usewill also increase.

Adjust the four leveling feet as fol-lows:

^ Tip the machine slightly and place asupport, such as a block of wood,underneath it.

BEWARE : The washing machine isheavier than it looks! When tippingthe machine, be careful that it doesnot slip or slide along the floor. Takecare not to injure yourself or dam-age any surrounding furniture.

^ Unscrew each of the four feet asmuch as necessary by turning boththe foot 1 as well as the locking ring 2to the left using a screwdriver (see il-lustration).

^ Remove the supports, stand the ma-chine on its feet and check to see if itis level.

Repeat this procedure as often as nec-essary until the machine stands level.

^ Once level, hold the foot 1 immobileusing a wrench while turning thelocking ring 2 to the right using ascrewdriver. Turn each locking ringuntil it is tight against the bottom ofthe machine frame.

All four locking rings must be tightagainst the bottom of the machine.In addition, check to see that thefeet were not inadvertently un-screwed while tightening the rings.Running a machine that is not levelor whose feet are not tight maycause damage to both the machineand its surrounding area.

If a countertop is placed over thewasher, at least a 1/4 gap must beleft between the top of the machineand bottom of the countertop; andnothing should be within 1/2” of anyother side of the washing machine.

Washer / Dryer Stack

This Miele washing machine can be in-stalled as part of a washer dryer stackin combination with a Miele tumbledryer. The dryer can only be stacked ontop of the washer and never vice versa.

For this purpose, a stacking kit is avail-able from the Miele Technical Servicedepartment or your Miele dealer.

A washer and dryer should neverbe stacked without using theproper stacking kit. Doing so isextremely dangerous, as the dryermay vibrate off of the washingmachine during use.

Any residual water left in themachine from the factory test-ing process can be flushed outas follows:^ Do not put any laundry in the ma-

chine.

^ Place 1/4 of the recommendedamount of detergent in compartmentj.

^ Turn on the machine.

^ Press the “Rapid wash” button.

^ Turn the program selector to the“COTTONS 140°F” program.

^ Any residual water will be flushed outduring the wash program.

Water hardness reminderThe amount of detergent needed towash clothes depends on various fac-tors, including the water hardness inyour area. You can set the water hard-ness dial in the detergent dispenser asa reminder.

^ Turn the dial to the desired setting.Use the tool supplied with the ma-chine. It is located behind the deter-gent drawer, on the left hand side(see Cleaning and Care).1 = soft, 4 = very hard water

Plumbing ConnectionsConnect the cold water intake hose(blue mark) to the cold water valve andthe hot water intake hose (red mark) tothe hot water valve.

Turn on the valves and check for leaks.The water pressure must be within15-145 psi (1-10 bar). If the water pres-sure is greater than 145 psi(10 bar), a pressure reducer must beinstalled. If the water pressure is below15 psi (1 bar), insufficient water may beavailable for a complete fill.

The water intake hoses are equippedwith screen filters. Please do not re-move these filters.

Please note

If the machine is being connected to acold water supply only, both the hotand cold water intake hoses should beattached to the cold water valvethrough the use of a Y adapter (avail-able at any hardware store). Both hosesmust be connected to a water source,or the machine will not function prop-erly. Do not connect the washer to hotwater only.

Connection to the drainsystemThe 5 ft. (1.5 m) drain hose may beconnected as follows:

1. Directly into a sink: hook the hoseover the edge of the sink and secureit firmly (e.g. by tying the hose to thewater faucet).

2. To a stand pipe: place the drainhose into a 1 1/2“ (38 mm) stand pipeand firmly secure it.

3. To a floor drain: The machine isequipped with anairgap/anti-siphoning system so thatno minimum drain height is required.

^ The machine drains using a pumpwith a maximum delivery height of 4ft. (1.2 m).

^ Make sure there are no kinks in thedrain hose.

^ If desired, the drain hose may be ex-tended to 15 ft. (4.5 m) maximum.

This appliance must be grounded.

In the event of a malfunction or break-down, grounding will reduce the risk ofelectric shock by providing a path ofleast resistance for the electric current.This appliance is equipped with a cordhaving an equipment grounding con-ductor and plug. The following additional functions canbe programmed into the machine if de-sired:

A High water level (only in“Cottons” rinses)

Where rinse results are particularly im-portant (e.g. Soap allergies).

For soft water areas (up to 135 ppmcalcium carbonate).

In soft water areas, a higher water levelcan be selected in addition to a 5thrinse cycle, if required.

A 10 second water intake through com-partmenti during the main wash canbe added.

D Program Lock(Child Safety Feature)

When activated, the washing machinewill ignore any changes made after thefirst three minutes of operation. For ex-ample, if the Program Selector ismoved to a different setting or an addi-tional function is selected after the firstthree minutes, the “On” lamp will flash,notifying you that the Child Safety Fea-ture has been activated. The programwill, however, continue uninterrupted.This prevents children from inadver-tently changing or stopping a wash pro-gram by playing with the dials.

If the Program Selector is turned to itsoriginal position, the “On” lamp will stopflashing.

To change a program once the ProgramLock is activated:

^ Turn the Program Selector to“Finish/Start”.

After about 30 seconds, the sequenceindicator lamps will start flashing in suc-cession. A new program can be se-lected as soon as the “On” lamp is theonly one remaining lit.

E Additional rinse in Rapidwash

For soft water areas.
