Roving ChessNuts are holding weekday evening classes at Greenfield Hall, and Saturday morning classes at Beaumont Pub-lic Library and at the RC Training

Facility in northeast Edmonton. Other venues are expected to open this chess season as well. The classes started in Septem-ber and continue until near the

Christmas holidays. Students can still join the classes with seats still not filled. Best way to find out what is available is to e-mail [email protected] or usually there is updated information on the web-

site: www.rovingchessnuts.com. New offering We are often getting inquiries from parents wanting to get their children involved but not being near one of the existing classes or not finding a class day and time their children can attend. There has been a few occa-sions in past years where a parent has offered to host a chess class in their family room or other part of the house where a few tables and chairs can be set up. Through our training of junior chess instructors and leaders, we are willing to entertain similar arrangements for a minimum of six beginning chess students of ele- mentary age. Last season, we did offer se-ries of chess classes hosted by two community leagues in southeast and southwest Edmonton. Parents wishing more informa-tion on these types of possible arrangements should contact Bruce by e-mail or phone: [email protected] or 780-474-2318. All children should have the opportunity to learn how to play chess properly and benefit from its educational attributes.

Registration for the November 3 event will begin after the Turkey Trot event on October 6. This chess season there will be more emphasis on school team com-petitions so that more students in school programs experience and ben-efit from testing their developing chess skills under competitive condi-tions. Parents who wish to get involved in helping their school have a recog-nized chess team, please contact Bruce at The Roving ChessNuts. Between 2002 and 2008, there were many team tournaments on weekends and even after-school matches hosted by different schools in Edmonton and St. Albert. One large tournament involving 16 elementary school teams and almost 100 players was held at West Edmonton Mall.
