Open Gates A publication of the
Gates Cactus & Succulent Society May 2015
From the President:
May has finally arrived and that means our BIG annual show and sale is quickly approaching. Most of the preparation and planning are in place but that does not mean there is nothing left to be done. There are still some remaining pre‐show/sale activities that need attention. Talk to me or Buck for information. We will need as many of you as possible who can volunteer your time during any portions of the event. Plenty of help will be needed for the pre‐show setup, for the duration of the show and sale, and for the post‐show cleaning.
Before we all get too busy or stressed with our upcoming show and sale, we should all relax and have some fun party time. I want to invite everyone to come and enjoy one last social evening with the Hemenways. This will be an evening of food and drink, friends and celebration. This party will be their final cactus and succulent celebratory stop on their American Tour. Share some laughter while reminiscing on succulent story that future Gates CSS members will relish. These are the tales of time and each of us will be a part of this once‐in‐a‐lifetime extravaganza. Please bring your favorite potluck dish, snack, or dessert to share. As usual, the club will provide drinks and beverages. BYOB! Sue Sims will provide the ambiance setting at the Sims Tree Learning Center. The event will start at 4 PM on Saturday May 9, 2015. That means come on time if you want to try a piece of every potluck item before the plate goes empty. Come earlier than 4 PM if you want to stroll around the Sims Center to see what’s new on the ground. I do hope everyone can come to the party to not only have some delicious food among friends but also to wish Buck and Yvonne a new and adventurous next chapter of their life. Perhaps they will start a blog…
If you are not planning on coming and/or participating at our show & sale, you still have yet another opportunity to assist in the event. We need boxes for the sale of the plants and goodies. Cardboard boxes is the preferential choice but I suppose any box sturdy enough to hold plants can be used. The box will encourage customers to shop and purchase in comfort with convenience. So your mission is to go to Costco, Sam’s Club, USPS or any other source where you can amass a collection of boxes for our sale.

From the President Con’t. Be sure to bring the boxes to this month’s meeting so we can take them off your hands; unless you want to drop them off on the day of the show and sale. Of course the next best thing to do is to join us at this event.
The CSSA Biennial Convention is only a month and a half away. Detailed information about the show, registration for the show and volunteer opportunity for the show are online at http://cssa2015.com. As a preview to the event, the official convention t‐shirt will be available for purchase at this month’s meeting. The design is a must‐have to your cactus/succulent shirt collection. Wear it with pride as we co‐host the convention. The CSSA annual show and sale will be on June 26‐28, 2015 at the Huntington Botanical Gardens. We will have more information to this event next month. The next two months will be packed‐full of activities for you to participate and enjoy. See you at the meeting and we can talk more… Phuc
May Speaker: Buck Hemenway is our speaker for May. He and Yvonne have been members of Gates C&SS for just about 20 years. From complete newbies with no idea which end of a cactus was which, they have transformed themselves into successful growers of plants and non‐stop volunteers, reaching and befriending succulent plant enthusiasts around the world.
The idea to attend a conference in South Africa to gain knowledge about how to grow better plants has changed their lives completely. With several more extended trips behind them, they will move to Calitzdorp, South Africa in June of this year in order to continue their love for the plants and people of that beautiful country.
Their families are far away from Southern California in Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and across Canada. They leave the wonderful friends that they’ve made in California with the best and warmest of wishes for fantastic futures, while they pursue their dreams far away.
Buck’s talk is titled “Why We Love South Africa” and it shows some of the reasons why they feel the need to move there.

CSSA CONVENTION 2015 JUNE 14 – 19, 2015
ALL GATES MEMBERS You have the chance to participate in one of
the most spectacular events in the Cactus & Succulent world in June. Once every 2 years, the Cactus & Succulent Society of America invites the succulent crazies from around the world to gather in one place and share ideas, experiences and the love for plants. Not since 2001 has this event been held in the Los Angeles Basin. Gates C&SS is privileged to co‐host this event with San Gabriel Valley C&SS at Pitzer College in Claremont California. Whether or not you volunteer to help put it on, the chance to attend such an event near you only comes around once every decade or so. Do Not Miss the Chance. OK. That Said, we need your help. And you can attend the Convention FREE if you will sign up to help put it on. There are sign‐up sheets at the meeting, and you can call Buck anytime to have your name put on the sheet. You just need to commit to 10 hours of volunteer service during that week to get a name badge that will gain entry to the lecture hall. Look it up on‐line at http://CSSA2015.com.
You need to sign up on the sheet AND take a look at the Registration Form so you can attend the Opening Banquet at the Huntington (Monday night) and Closing Banquet at Pitzer.(Friday night) among other things.
CACTUS RESCUE
Just a reminder about our cactus rescue program; it's a great way for our members to acquire new specimens at a relatively low cost, and all funds go directly to our club. If you or anybody you know want to donate
plants or an entire collection, contact Ray Cardenas or any other board member. We will collect and
transport the plants, make arrangements for their care, prepare them for sale, and make them available to our
club. Ray Cardenas
Gates Cactus & Succulent Society 40th Annual Show & Sale
Set Up May 13 & 14 Sale May 15 & 16
Show May 16 We took a big step in 2014 and moved our
Show & Sale to a new venue which was wonderfully successful. In this second year at the Landscapes Southern California Style gardens, we look to grow the event. We have added vendors and are hoping that our members will turn out in large numbers to help the club succeed in bringing awareness to the community of the nature of our plants.
The club needs your help. Each member can contribute to the success of the event. You don’t need to be a plant expert, just come along and pitch in and watch the public fall in love the same way that each of us did at our first Show & Sale.
The schedule of events is printed in this newsletter. You can see that there are a lot of activities to get involved in. We need help with cashiering and checking out of customers, the holding table needs help, we need help with set up on Wednesday May 13 and tear down immediately following the end of the event.
Plan to join us at our dinner and auction on Friday night. We have a first class barbeque dinner planned for just $20 per person. Immediately following dinner, we will have an auction of plants. You are invited to bring a maximum of 2 plats to be auctioned. At this auction, the club shares revenue with the grower. The grower keeps 70% of the sale price and the club keeps 30%.
We need you to sign up and pay for the dinner at the meeting if at all possible. We need to give the caterer a head count. If you don’t sign up, or if you are not going to attend the meeting, call Karen Roholt (951) 897‐2220 and give her your name and how many in your party for the dinner.
We look forward to a great event.
Kitchen Duty for May Trisha Davis and Andrew Gould
