onTune V4 Admin User Guide 8

1. Introduction to onTune Admin

onTune is a system Performance Monitoring and Tuning Tool. It utilizes Agent

processes on the monitored server(s) to collect and package the information. And

user-defined system events are notified to the user by SMS and/or E-mail.

onTune Admin is used to configure onTune operating environments to meet user

requirements, and user(s) settings as well.

onTune Admin directly operates on the database instance used by onTune

Manager. In multiple onTune Manager usage environments, the user must connect

to each database used by each onTune Manager, and configure each one using

onTune Admin. To configure the settings to connect to the database, please refer

to “2.2 onTune Admin environment settings.

If the run-time environment settings are incorrect, a “connection to database

error” will occur. Ignore this error; modify the settings for connecting to the

database correctly thru the “Configure” menu; stop onTune Admin, and re-execute

onTune Admin.

onTune Admin provides the following functions:

Updating onTune Viewer

onTune Admin updates the onTune Viewer program, which presents system

performance information to the user. The onTune Viewer is updated automatically

via the internet by defining the update URL link, and by the user manually to a

specific version using onTune Admin.

Register and manage onTune License

onTune license is registered by onTune Admin function.

Configure onTune Admin running environments

onTune Admin connects to the database which is used by onTune Manager.

Configuring onTune Admin essentially means to set the database connection

settings.

Manage performance data collection periods of each server to be monitored

onTune Admin provides functions to configure settings of onTune Agent

managed by onTune Manager.

Group definition of servers’ (hosts) for onTune Viewer user(s)

System performance information of servers (hosts) under monitor can be

grouped for viewing on the onTune Viewer. The server group(s) are defined and

managed using onTune Admin. We recommend creating user defined server

group(s) when Agent(s) connect to Manager for the first time. This is specially so

when having a large number of servers under monitor. It becomes complicated to

navigate and find a particular server information under monitor without the

grouping structure.

User account management (Viewer user)

Only authorized-users are permitted to view and investigate server

performance and event information. User accounts for onTune Viewer are created

and managed by onTune Admin only. This include granting privileges to access

specific server information.

Upload file(s) to the server (host) where Agent runs

Users may upload any file from the onTune Admin operational PC or server to

the Agent operational Server (host). Once the user selects a file to upload and

stores this information, the onTune Manager informs Agent and sends the file.

Optionally, the user may command onTune to execute the file upon finishing the

upload to the Agent Server (host).

Download file(s) from the server (host) where Agent runs

Users may download any file from the Agent server (host) to the user’s PC or

server by executing the download command to onTune Manager via onTune Admin.

The Admin or Viewer window will show the result of this command execution.

Send executable command to the server where Agent runs

An Agent will execute commands received from onTune Manager. The command

may be – stop Agent, update Agents, collect system information at a particular

time, and others.

Create executable script and execute it on the server where Agent runs

The user may create an executable script to be sent and executed on the

Agent Server (host). The Admin or Viewer window will show the result of script

execution.

Send executable script file to the server where Agent runs and execute it

The user may send an executable script to be executed on the Agent Server

(host). The Admin or Viewer window will show the result of script execution.

View onTune Manager runtime logs

onTune runtime logs are shown on Admin message window.

1.1 Checklist before executing onTune Admin

onTune Admin manages onTune runtime environments using onTune Managers’

database(s). Verify the following before executing onTune Admin.

- Execute all onTune Manager(s) database(s) to be managed.

- Execute all onTune Manager(s) to be managed.

- Install and execute Agents that will be connected to the Manager(s). Only

installed and executing Agents prior to executing onTune Admin, are shown

in onTune Admin’s server (host) list – Host List or Group List. We

recommend installing and executing Agents before executing of onTune

Admin. If not, the Server (Host) list will be blank. Newly Agent installed

servers after Admin executing are shown when the Agents execute and

connect to Manager first time.

2. Execution of onTune Admin

Execute onTuneAdmin.exe from the onTune installed directory. Refer to onTune

Version 4 Installation Guide, “3.2 onTune Admin Installation and Configuration” for

how to install onTune Admin. The contents of the onTune installed directory are

shown below:

onTune Admin directly operates on the database instance used by onTune

Manager. In multiple onTune Manager usage environments, the user must connect

to each database used by each onTune Manager, and configure each one using

onTune Admin. To configure the settings to connect to the database, refer to “2.2

If the run-time environment settings are incorrect, a “connection to database

error” will occur. Ignore this error; modify the settings for connecting to the

database correctly thru the “Configure” menu; stop onTune Admin, and re-execute

onTune Admin.

6. Server (Host) Grouping and Performance Monitoring Settings

onTune Admin provides 2 methods to locate and select servers (hosts) for

display of their performance parameters on onTune Viewer and Event Viewer. One is

through user-defined server (host) groups for easy navigation, and the other is to

use server (host) trees that are created by onTune automatically. Both navigation

trees are shown in the left window when you choose the Agent Config tab menu.

User-defined server (host) groups are managed via the Group tab menu

User-defined server (host) group structure are created and maintained by

onTune Admin. Server (host) navigation trees created by onTune automatically are

described in “6.3 Automatically Created Server (Host) Tree - Host List”; and user-

defined server (host) groups for navigation are explained in “6.4 User Defined

Server (Host) Groups – Group List.”

The onTune user may configure monitoring parameter settings that apply to

each server; or all servers selected for following entries. For environments

settings details, refer to “6.6 Performance Information Collection Settings.”

- Performance Data Collection criteria (No option settings required.)

All servers where onTune Agent are installed will be monitored, except

for those with the set execution option. (This server(s) are excluded

from monitoring if the Execute Once option was selected with the

Agent Installer; or using the installation shell script with execution

option set to 0.) Refer to “4. onTune Agent Installation” in onTune

Version 4 Installation Guide for details.

The following performance information is collected automatically

without any specific definition. Refer to “onTune Version 4 Viewer User
