Tom is the Divisional Music
Director at The Salvation Army
in Florida, where he teaches
music, trains leaders, and
develops music and arts
programs. He currently is
transitioning to Chicago to
become the Assistant
Territorial Music Secretary for
The Salvation Army.
Tom grew up just outside of
Detroit, Michigan and moved
to Chicago, Illinois to earn his
bachelor’s degree in music
education from DePaul
University while playing both
Trombone and Euphonium
with the Chicago Staff Band.
He has been a guest soloist and clinician at several brass band
camps and events. He has been conductor of several Salvation
Army brass bands including the Florida Divisional Band, Eastern
Michigan Divisional Band, and Dearborn Heights Citadel Band. Tom
has been a soloist with the Chicago Staff Band and member of both
the Southern Territorial Band and Clearwater Citadel Band.
We are excited to have him join us at SMC2019!
Each camper registers in one of the main streams where they will participate in a large group rehearsal twice a day.

If you have registered for this stream, bring your instrument, music stand and your enthusiasm - beginner to advanced! We have an expert for every level. Daily classes will allow for individual teaching at your ability level. Instrumentalists will have a chance to work under the leadership of our special guest bandmaster, Tom Hanton.

Participation in our vocal stream means that you will receive expert instruction while singing beautiful choral arrangements. Vocalists of all abilities are welcome and are encouraged to sing and make music to glorify God. You will learn ear training, singing in pitch, sight singing and rhythmic exercises in your vocal classes each day.

New for this year! Please note, we will not be auditioning campers when they arrive on Sunday, August 18th. All audition files MUST be received by Saturday, August 10, 2019 at 11:59PM.
For Vocal Auditions: 1. Please download the audition music from our webpage. 2. Please state your name and the vocal part you are auditioning for before you begin singing. 3. Record yourself singing from the beginning of the piece to the end. Do not stop the recording until you finish the song. Please do not edit the recording in any way. 4. Try as many times as you’d like and submit your best one! 5. Save your recording file as follows: Your Name Vocal Part (e.g. Cameron Rawlins Tenor Audition) 6. Email your audition to the following email address: [email protected] 7. Feel great that you have just finished the least nerve wracking audition of all time!
For Instrumental Auditions: 1. Please download the audition music from our webpage. 2. Please state your name clearly before you begin to play. 3. Please begin at the first exercise and play as many as you can without stopping the recording. (Returning campers, see below.) You are welcome to play as many exercises as you would like, but for each one, please play from the start of the exercise to the finish without stopping. Please do not edit the recording in any way. 4. Play at whatever tempo (speed) is comfortable for you. Try as many times as you’d like and submit your best one! 5. For returning campers: If you were in Selkirk Band led by Andrew Burditt, you can begin at exercise 3A and move on from there. If you were in Jackson’s Point Band led by William Himes, you can begin at exercise 5A and move on from there. If you are a returning camper and do not submit an audition video, you will be placed in a band based on your
audition spot last year.

All campers participate in an elective each day as an opportunity to try out
new things and have fun with friends. This year, the registration process
allowed you to choose your electives online. Here is a brief description:

Mixed Chorus: Amanda Caruk Singing! Mixed chorus singing! Air conditioned comfort! All are welcome! DIY Crafts Leader: Heather Robertson Participants will get to explore their creative side and make a trendy wooden sign!
Personal Fitness: Maggi Jones Activities will include a Boot Camp style workout, running, and yoga.

One of the greatest experiences a musician can have is to stand up and play a solo for all to enjoy. In The Salvation Army, this can be a real act of worship and a blessing to others. If you’ve never been given the opportunity to try this for yourself, SMC is the perfect place to give it a try. All campers are eligible to participate as either or both Instrumentalist or Vocalist.

SMC offers the opportunity for campers who demonstrate excellence of character and musicianship to be awarded for their contributions. Awards are given for each musical ensemble plus the esteemed Honour Camper Award. Musical Ensemble Awards Chosen by the leadership team of each
musical ensemble Campers who display enthusiasm, dedication,
focus and demonstrate a desire to improve will be considered.
Musical ensembles eligible for an award are: Madawaska Chorus, Jackson’s Point Band, Selkirk Band, Glen Huron Band and Roblin Lake Band

Canteen and t-shirt costs are covered in your registration fees. Extra money is not needed.
Camp sweatshirts can be purchased. It is better to preorder with the camp office to make sure you get one!
The only weapon you will need is your Bible! Please leave all others behind. This includes penknives. As well, lighters, vapes, cigarettes and alcohol should not accompany you to camp.
Cellphones are welcome, but cannot be used during sessions or classes.
Please leave your gaming systems at home.
This year, you will work together, in teams, following CLUES and solving puzzles, on a journey to discover the true KEY to life! Each day begins with the Faculty Band marching past your cabin and meeting at the flagpole for daily devotions. We will start the day right with breakfast, and participate in Worship and Bible, followed by your main stream choice, instrumental/vocal classes and there is NO ESCAPE from theory. After lunch, we have time for electives and of course, you have free time too. Our theme for the week is ESCAPE ROOM. Throughout the week you and your team will have an opportunities to test your problem solving skills, searching your environment to UNLOCK the mysteries of camp life, and just maybe RESCUE a friend in the process! We will end each night in the Pavillion with good food and great fun! Are YOU up to the challenge?"
