Newspaper 3 - 2 0 1 2 I S S U E T H R E E

It was three years ago that we first met in Italy during a teacher´s conference to set up an

international Comenius project. And here we are … a lot of work, new experiences, encoun-

ters, an online webpage and three editions of our own newspaper, fun and disillusions and

especially new friendships later. Time seems to have flown by very fast … which is a good

thing, because it means we fully enjoyed this project.

Did we achieve the goals we set out to do ? Probably not entirely but is that necessary or the

main goal of this kind of projects? Or is it maybe more to discover that besides the diffe-

rences between pupils and teachers, the organisation of our schools, our countries and cul-

ture – we in fact have so much more in common than the things that divide us.

We are all passionate about human beings, education and Europe. We are all keen on dis-

covering new challenges and we all walked this undiscovered path together.

We can be proud and thankful of what our pupils realised over this period of two years. May-

be not because it made them smarter or their grades yent up in a spectacular way, but more

because it made them richer in ever possible way. And that is more than we could have as-

ked for.

General information

Axelle Red was born in

1968 in Hasselt as Fa-

bienne Demal. This means

that her mother language

is Dutch, but most of her

songs are sung in French.

Axelle Red is not just a

singer but also a human

rights activist and since

1997 an ambassador for

UNICEF .She stands up for

children and women in war

-torn regions and develop-

ing countries. In the same

year she became active in

anti-mine campaigns. Be-

side all the work, she still

had time for her personal

life .

In 1998 she got married to

Filip Vanes who is manager

of Hooverphonic, a famous

Belgian band. They have three

daughters: Janelle, Gloria and

Billie. In 1993 Fabienne gradu-

ated as a lawyer. She got in-

terested in the subject because

her father is a lawyer too.

More important in that year is

the release of her first album

‘Sans plus attendre’ which

made her instantly famous in

Belgium, France, Canada and

Switzerland.

Since 1993, Axelle Red has

songwriter and then she’s

influenced by a lot of styles,

but definitely by Motown,

Memphis, soul music and the

Axelle received an

Name: Gabriele Susanne Kerner

Born: 24 March 1960 In Hagen

She’s better known by her

stage name Nena. Nena is a German singer and actress. She came to inter-national fame in 1983 with the “New German Wave”-

song "99 Luftballons". In 1984, she re-recorded this song in English as "99 Red Balloons". Nena is also the name of the band with which she released the song.

The Swedish artist Oskar Linnros

Hans Oskar Linnros, born August 15, 1983 in Sundbyberg, Sweden and is a Swedish musician. He started out as a rapper in the alternative hip hop duo Snook together with Daniel Adams-Ray. They released two albums and received both praise and heavy criticism. Snooks unorthodox hip hop

was met by comments that the band wasn’t keeping it real and the fact that Adams-Ray spent his teenage years in „Lidingö“, that made critics to call them as “Upper class rappers”. Despite the critics, the band had many hits, amd received awards from radio station P3, The Swedish

Hip-hop Awards 2003, and best Swedish band at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2006.

The band Snook drifted apart. Daniel Adams-Ray attended design school, while Linnros started producing other artists such as the rapper Petter and the singer Veronica Maggio. The album Linnros produced and wrote for

Maggio was nominated for five Swedish Grammies. The two had met while working on a remix for Petter and became romantically involved.

In June 2010 Oskar Linnros released „Vilja Bli“, that was an album he had written, played and produced. The album contained hardly any rap vocals at all and was quickly compared to Swedish artists, for example Mauro Scocco, Orup and Peter LeMarc, artists that were extremely popular in

Scandinavia in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Linnros told that he wanted to bring back that sound, but with an updated version. He also named Donny

Hathaway and Al Green as being influences. The album „Vilja Bli“ received lots of good reviews and the music journalist Jan Gradvall wrote that the album “is one of the most complete Swedish debut album I have heard and full of hits ”.

Agnes Carlsson

The pop-star Agnes Carlsson became fame as the winner of “Idol 2005” the second season of the Swe-dish Idol series. Agnes is the Swedish Idol artist that has been most successful international and has given out the big international hits “Release Me” and “On and On” that have reaching the top-ten in charts worldwide. “Release Me” topped the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs and peaked at three in the

United Kingdom. The song has selling over 900,000 copies worldwide.

In the spring of 2005 when Agnes was 17 year old, she auditioned for the second season of popular Swedish singing competition “Idol” in Gothenburg. The four judges were all hugely impressed by the strong power of her voice and she successfully passed through to the theatre rounds of the contest. Her vocals continued to impress the judges, and she made it to the semi-finals. Here take the audiences

over the power to decide who for continue the competition and Agnes did not get a place in the final eleven contestants and when she again failed to grab a place through the special 'wildcard' round, the judges decided to pass her through to the finals as the judges' choice contestant. After Agnes winning “Idol”, she signed a recording contract with Sony BMG and her debut single, "Right Here Right Now (My Heart Belongs to You)" was released.

A week later, the song debuted at number one on the Swedish singles chart, a position it held for six

weeks. The song was quickly certified double platinum for the sale of over 40,000 copies in Sweden. Just one week later her highly anticipated debut album “Agnes” was released. The album debuted at number one on the Swedish albums chart and was certified platinum in its first week of release and it has selling almost 40,000 copies.

International music Career

"Release Me" began to receive attention from abroad, with Roxy Recordings later stating that the song would receive an international release. The move marked the first time that Agnes' music would be dis-tributed outside Sweden. The single made its first international appearance in Denmark, where it peaked

at number six selling over 25,000 copies, but most of all, "Release Me" gained massive remarks in the UK and Agnes was signed to the small independent record company 3Beat, where the song received its

official UK release on May 31, 2009, proving to be a big hit, being picked up by most music channels, also with Agnes performing the song and a few others at G-A-Y, the UK's biggest gay nightclub venue and also a live performance on GMTV, one of the UK's biggest breakfast shows. Release Me hit the top of Radio 1's A-list play list, and eventually debuted at number three in the UK Singles Chart, and contin-ued to ride high in the top ten for many weeks. After eight weeks it managed to get a Silver certification with over 300,000 copies sold. In Ireland the song debuted at thirty-eight and later peaked at ten. "Release Me" continued to reign European charts during the summer and autumn, being released in

most European countries, becoming a success in France, Belgium, Italy and Germany. Agnes made her first appearance outside of Europe in late July after being signed by “Warner Music” in Australia with "Release Me" as her first Australian entering the Australian chart at number eleven in its first week of release. Her second international hit was “On and On” that also get a big attention.

Agnes has also been in the Swedish Eurovision Song Contest in 2009 and sing on the Wedding of Victo-ria, Crown Princess of Sweden, and Daniel Westling the song “When You Tell the World You're Mine”.

DAY ONE: A NICE GERMAN WELCOME

After three hours of driv-ing in our rental car, we finally arrived in the Ger-man village of Lemgo. There we met Matthias,

who took us to a nice white house, our house for the next week. When

we stepped, we immedi-ately liked it. Let´s give

you a little tour through our apartment.

This is our home; the

fourwindows at the bot-

tom of this house is the space we use. It is just a five minute walk from the

school and the shops aren’t far either. The house lies next to a big street, but we don’t have

a problem with the noise of the cars driving by. When you walk through the front door, there is a little hall. Behind that hall, we have our own kitchen in which we already made

pancakes, eggs, fish and potatoes with accompany-ing sauce: simply deli-

cious! Next to this kitch-en is a spacious living room (with a big flat

screen). Unfortunately for us, all the channels broad-cast in German.

In the same room, a bed is crammed in the corner. This bed is occupied by

pupil from Belgium.

The other room is a chamber with a (broken) shower and a lot of clos-ets, in this one, Laure and Roxanne.

The only room left, is our cosy bathroom. We have a toilet and a shower, and there is also the pos-

sibility to spy on the neighbours.

The other part of the day, we had a nice and warm welcome in the Heinrich Drake Schule in the room where the teachers normally pre-

pare their lessons. They had us taste delicious sausages and potato sal-

ad and when we were stuffed, some German pupils took us to the shopping street. The

combination of a long car trip and hot weather made us thirsty, so we went in to a local bar. The strange thing about Germany is that a Cola costs 2.10 euro in a bar,

Afterwards we went to a little student restaurant where we ate pizza and lasagne until our stom-achs were full. Then we

rolled ourselves back to the apartment and fell asleep.

DAY TWO: MEET THE LEMGOVIANS

After waking up at 6 am. and having eggs for breakfast, we started our trip to the school.

When everybody was pre-

sent, the German pupils could start their guided tour through the school. Our impression was that the new part of the Hein-rich Drake Schule is very

nice and modern. Their refectory or mensa is also very spacious and high-brow. The next thing we

could do, was follow one of the courses that the kids were having. I had

the opportunity to see one of the maths classes where the pupils had to measure things like the contours of the school or head and belly contours. A big difference between

the school in Belgium and the HDS in Lemgo is that pupils can walk around in class and say what is on

their mind. In Belgium we can’t say or do much in the classroom, otherwise

the teacher would send us to the secretary to get a red or a yellow paper. . This means that you will have detention on a Wednesday afternoon to clean up the school.

When we left the class, Frau Grote and her pupils made some really tasty sandwiches and ham-burgers. Because school

starts very early here (7:45 AM!) people don´t have a large breakfast

and take a ear.

DAY THREE: HERMANN

Yes, Belgians can cook.

Yes, Hannes can cook.

Because Wednesday we woke up with nice, hot and fresh pancakes. Pan-cakes with jam, sugar or nutella.

This sweet breakfast

made our morning com-plete even though we were late at school. The rest of the morning was filled with working on the online newspaper to make sure that it can be

finished on time. After working very concentrat-ed on this task, dinner was served in the mensa. All the pupils and teach-ers could eat until their

belly was full. But a belly

wouldn’t be completely full if there wasn’t any ice cream in it, so we went to an Italian Ice Café and took us a nice, big, cold coupe of ice cream with a

lot of fruit (offered by our nice teachers).

This was necessary for our following trip to Detmold, where we could walk

around in the city for a while. But, since all the Belgians like a little bit of peace and quiet, our teachers took us to a local tavern to drink a nice cup of coffee in the sunshine.

Thereupon we took the bus to a very, very tall statue which they call the ‘Hermannsdenkmal’. While we were walking to this statue, suddenly two

teachers (dressed up as a

Roman and a German man) jumped out of the bushes, attacking each other which made the trip really amusing. The nice thing about this sculpture

was that you could get on top of it. Here, the view was magnificent ! You could see a lot of

neighbouring towns, sun-ny hills and shady forests. On the edge, there were a

lot of names of villages and the wind directions were also on it. The fact that this statue is made out of bronze is quite alarming for us because in

Belgium we have a lot of thieves who steal this metal to sell it on the market. That’s why we make fake bronze statues which are made out of wood and are painted in

the same colour of real bronze, this is much cheaper and the robbers

It was amazing to see the huge amount of stored bot-tles ( nine million !!!) and even more impressive to

see the speed of the pro-duction process with all kinds of new and huge ma-chines. A very friendly woman showed us around and offered us free bottles of soft drinks at the end of

the tour which was a nice and unexpected surprise.

Our last stop was a trip to a little restaurant in a cosy town, it was a copy of an old town they reconstruct-

ed on the side. Here we had our dinner all together. Our generous teacher paid our food, so the food tasted even better. When we left the restaurant, the stars were already shining. And

through this dark and quiet night, we took of in our fancy orange bus. When we arrived at school, we walked to our apartment in the silver moonlight.

At .6.00 am, wake up be-cause the teachers are coming over to have breakfast.

And, oh no, we still need to go to the shop for bread, ham and milk. The shop opens at 7.00 am (which is quite early for us) and the teach-ers are arriving at a quarter

past seven. So we had to be very fast to get every-thing ready in time. We started roasting bread with cheese and ham to make ‘croque monsieur’, a toast-

ed sandwich. When the ready and the teachers were there, we could start

serving coffee, tea, fresh orange juice and toast. They said they liked it, so we were very proud of our-

selves. After having this nice breakfast, the teachers cleaned the table and they drove us to school. The rest of the morning, all the stu-dents and teachers were

helping to finish the online

newspaper. To get our minds restful, frau Grote made these very tasty snacks for all of us. After this delicious break, we sat ourselves down in front of

the computer and finished the newspaper.

DAY Five: SPORT FOR SPAß

Our day started in a rush because we woke up to late, so we had to run to school (and we still were to late…). There we started

immediately with listening to known Swedish, German and Belgian songs, which

was really nice to hear. Then, for the last time, frau Grote and her class, made

these really delicious snacks. Thereafter a group started on making pizza and the other group went horseback riding. Our teachers helped prepare the oven and the pizza, and

we went to the horses. These horses were very easy to handle because they were specially trained

to work with small children. We once had to be the rider and once we had to be the

helper. After and before this trip, we all had to brush the horse to get it comfortable.

If you have been sportive, the chance is big you’re hungry after this. So we had some very nice pizza

(made by mister Brancka-erts ) and as desert, he also made this very tasty chocolate mousse. But on-ly eating wouldn’t be good for our health so Jens helped us with that prob-

lem. He taught us how to work with a diabolo and lots of other tricks. Then

there was another man who taught us how to play badminton.In these five

days, we had a really nice time. The German and Swedish people were very, very friendly and kind. And also our teachers were unforgettably nice!! We will never forget how nice

it was in Germany, and when we have the chance, we will be back! (Written

The Externsteine are a striking sandstone rock formation in the Teuto-burg Forest and as such a prominent natural feature in Germany. The original

name of the rocks is not clear, there are several interpretations. Today's spelling Externsteine seems

to have emerged only in the 19th century. Before, mainly forms like Eggster,

Eggester and Egistersteine occupied. There are other

interpretations but a kin-ship with the Latin exter-nus (located outside),can however be exclud-ed.Located in the north-

eastern part of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the

southern part of the lip or circle in the Teutoburg

stones belong to the Horn-

Bad Meinberg Berger dis-trict Holzhausen-Externsteine, which is sit-

uated about 1.1 km to the

northwest. The rocks are part of the central moun-tain chain of the Teuto-

burg Forest. They lie just to the southeast of the low mountain range bor-dering the Egge.

In the northwest the Ex-ternsteine go directly into

the rising wooded slopes of the stone and borders directly on the southeast bend of those in Hagen.

Right past the rock for-mation in the catchment of the river Weser flows Wiembecke, which is dammed at the foot of the rocks by "Wiembecketeich”.

In 1926, the external stones became "one of the oldest and most important protected areas in the dis-trict of Lippe. On 12 May 2006 the external stones

were awarded "National

Geotope" by the Academy of Geosciences. From a conservation point of view, not only the rock itself is particularly valua-ble, but also its rare vege-

tation.

Karl Junker & Das unkershaus

Karl Junker was born in

Lemgo. After his carpenter training, he studied arts in Munich. In 1877/1878, he embarked on a study trip through Italy. Afterwards, he returned to his home

town of Lemgo, where he

lived and worked as a painter and wood sculptor. He did not receive any recognition in the art sce-ne during his lifetime. The response to the exhibition

of his works in Berlin in 1914 - after his death - remained ambivalent. It was not until the 1980´s that the work of Karl Junker was rediscov-

ered. For several years, it has been shown as an ex-ample of the art of an out-sider and was shown in exhibitions at home and abroad.

The Junkershouse is a cre-ation of artist Karl Junkers (1850-1912)

The artist Karl Junker de-signed the house. It was built by Lemgo´s master

carpenter Karl Schirneker and his staff..

The building gets its unu-sual appearance through the richly carved architec-tural ornaments. It covers the walls like stucco, sep-

arated by a strictly sym-metrical pattern with pi-lasters, entablature and cornice

Racism has no place in our society !!!

Everybody knows the word racism. But what is racism ?

Nobody can say when rac-

ism really starts. It’s from

old times. It was a different

racism then we know. It

was only how you look.

When you look different

then the people in your city

they mocked you. When

you were a child from a

slave or came from another

country then they mocked

you too. It was with your

hair colour too.

Today the racist only watch what your reli-gion is and your home-land. This is crucial

when a racist meet a

foreigener. This has normaly to do with clothes. Then normaly you wear clothes, what look a litte bit like your

religion. But the racist look also from wich counrty you are from and what colour your skin have. For them is important that you are from his country.

For exampel in the his-tory of Germany. It was Adolf Hitler. He chase Jews and put them to the concentration camp

and killed them. 6 mil-lion Jews was killed in the second world war, because he said that they are „bad“ people.

He killed familys, moth-ers, fathers, old people

even small children. For him it was not im-portant wich age the people had. Only what they were. But he don’t only chase Jews. The people who don’t do

what he wanted too.

He had his own pictur from the „perfect“ Ger-man. The „perfect“ Ger-

man had blond hair, blue eys and was large. He was sporty and

strong.

In Germany we have some organisations that care of the victim from racism.

They speak to them and

maybe they get an new identity, they move to another city were no-

body knows who they were

Racism it’s all over the world.

So it was in the USA on the 19th centruy too.Malcom Little was born in Nebraska in 1925. He had seven brothers

and sisters. His father was killed when he was only six years old. The police said it was an acci-dent but he thought that white people killed him. Later his mom became ill,

so the children had to leave their home and live in different families and childen’s homes.

He was one of the best

pupils at school and wanted to be a lawyer.

But on this times in the USA it was not a job for black people. This times was very hard for the blacks. Blacks couldn’t sit next to whites on buses

or trains. black childeren had to go to different schools.

So Malcom left school when he was fifteen ans moved to Harlem in New York. In Har-lem he started to steal and must go to prison for seven years in 1946.In prison Mal-com read lots of books and learned about a group of black Muslims. They wanted a better life for black Ameri-cans- a life without white people.

Malcom Little changed his name to „Malcom X“ because „Little“ was

a slave name.

He started fighting for the rights of the blacks. He talked on the radio or on TV

about freedom for black people. He used violence to change things.

In 1964 Malcom’s life

changed. He traveld to Mecca and came back

with a new name aga-ing. He was called El-Hajj Malik El Shabazz. Now he thought that violence was

wrong. And he fought for a better life for everybody every-where. Black and

white together.

But on Febuary 21st, 1965, three men killed

Malcom X in Harlem. On that day America lost one of the most

important men in ist history – a man who helped black people to fight for their dreams.

Clouseau

Basic information

In 1984 their adventure started with a very little concert

on a Sunday morning. In those days their name

was “Clouseau en Vrienden”. Their group was set

up by Bob Savenberg and is named after Inspector

Clouseau from the Pink Panter because he always

imitated this character from the movie.

In 1987 Clouseau performed on Marktrock. Their first single was called Brandweer and was only

sold 427 times

Their real breakthrough was in 1989 when they competed

in the Eurovision Song Contest with the song Anne. They

became very popular in Belgium and they produced their

first album “Hoezo?”. Their group existed of 5 members:

Bob Savenberg, drums; Karl Theys, bas; Tjen Berghmans,

guitar; Kris Wauters, piano and the singer Koen Wauters.

Especially the singer was very popular. In 1990 Tjen Bergh

mans left the group because afer an artistic discussion.

In October of the same year they produced their second album Ofzo. In 1991 Karl Theys left

the group so now there were only three members.

They participated again in the Eurovision Song Contest, because they hoped for a European

breakthrough but they never succeeded.

In 1996 Bob Savenberg left the group, so now the group consisted only of the two brothers.

Koen Wauters was born on 17 September 1967 in Halle. Besides a singer he’s also an actor and a

tv-presenter. He was fond of soccer but he never became a professional soccer player because

of a knee-injury. In 1989 VTM (Flemish commercial television network) was set up and Koen Wau-

ters became presenter. He presented programs like Idool and X-Factor. He’s maried to Valerie

De Booser (a famous fashion model) and they have 2 children, Zita and Nono. His participates

every year in the race Paris-Dakar.

His brother, Kris Wauters, was born on 21 September 1964. He had three brothers, one of them

is Koen, and two sisters. He plays the guitar and the piano, he also sings and writes the songs and

music. But he prefers being in the background .

Guided tour through the school

This morning we all gathered together in the school at 7.30 am. Also the

Swedish students who arrived very late

the evening before. We started with a

guided tour through the Heinrich - Drake

school, prepared by some students. Our

guides where Alex, Rufat and Tim. We

started in the cafeteria. Students can sit

here during break or study a little bit.

It’s located in the older part of the

school, but it is decorated with a lot of

colours and the flags of the Germany, Belgium and Sweden were put on the

ceiling, especially for our visit

Our next stop was located in the new part of the building (and is Joris his

favourite part), namely the kitchen. Almost every student has an hour of cooking during the week. They make, for instants, little sandwiches with meat and vegetables, that students can eat during their first break at 9.30

am. They call it ‘breakfast´.

In the garden, there were some hard workers who were making a floor outside the house with the oven. It’s the same oven as we have in Belgium, accept for the little house that’s protects the oven from all sorts of weather conditions. It was (and still is) all built by students. Gui recognized one of his bird boxes, the German students had built together with him

when they were in Belgium.

As we went through, we passed one of the two sports halls, but unfortunately this

one was closed. The other one was located almost in the

Here everybody eats together during the midday. You can also buy your food over here, but the prices are a little bit ex-pensive.

Our last stop was the chemical class. Here some students were putting together the solar system with balloons and paper marché. If the balloons are dry, they will take out the balloon and paint them in the right colour. So They will have a clear view of the solar system

The comparison between the renovations in the Belgian school

and the German school

When we saw the school for the first time, it was a sort of

coming home. Our school in Belgium has been renovated

for years and years and it’s the same in the HDS.

We’ve renovated the entrance, the main corridor, the sec-

retary, the staffroom, the school theatre (see first picture),

they put solar panels on

every roof … and that’s only the last two years. What’s

striking, is that the same colours are used in all the new

parts of the school: blue, white and orange. And it’s not

done yet. Because I heard that the school will renovate

our playground and maybe the school will construct a

whole new floor on the top of our newest building

In Germany they’re constructing a whole new building next to

the old building. You see a big difference between the two parts

of the school. The new part is more modern, which is normal of

course. One of my first impressions of the new part were the

animals. I saw fish and a lizard. In the new part, they have built a

new kitchen with all the facilities. Last year, they built a new

refectory, where they can buy a hot meal, like schnitzel with veg-

etables and potatoes, dessert,… or they just eat their

own sandwich.

So in this state of mind our school and the German

school are a little bit

the same.
