The School of Nursing is an integral unit of Hampton University and shares its goals and

ideals of excellence in the teaching-living-learning process. Nursing education at Hampton

University began with the Hampton Training School for Nurses in 1891. At the turn of the

century, Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute and Dixie Hospital (now Sentara

CarePlex) partnered to offer premier nursing education and health care for Peninsula

residents. Since 1944, the nursing faculty at Hampton University has provided high-quality

professional nursing education at the bachelor of science degree level. This undergraduate

program has the distinction of being the oldest baccalaureate nursing program in the

Commonwealth. In 1976, Hampton University instituted a master of science degree program

in nursing, making Hampton the first historically black college and university (HBCU) to

offer a master’s degree in nursing. In 1999, the School of Nursing achieved another

distinction when Hampton University instituted a PhD nursing program, the first at a HBCU.

The Center for Minority Family Health serves as the research arm of the School of Nursing.

The School of Nursing is approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing and is fully accredited

by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and the Commission on

Collegiate Nursing Education.

School of Nursing HAMPTON UNIVERSITY

Each new graduate is eligible to receive the Hampton University School of Nursing pin, which symbolizes the transition from student to nurse.

The School of Nursing’s pin is a representation of the middle of the

Hampton University seal. The official seal was accepted in 1875

and only the name has changed as Hampton has evolved from the

Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute to Hampton Institute to

Hampton University.

The symbols on the seal and the pin are a plow and sheaths of

grain; books of knowledge surmounted by a globe of the world; a

Bible stand; and, an old-fashioned printing press. The sunrise over

Hampton Creek symbolizes the rise of educational opportunities,

and the boat on the water symbolizes the principal medium of

transportation to Hampton during its early history.

Dear Graduating Seniors:

Everything around us molds and shapes us. You are a

reflection of your environment and your environment is also

reflection of you. Be sure that your environment is positive and lifts

you up and gives you wings to soar. My wish is that you found such

an environment while you matriculated at Hampton University in the

School of Nursing.

Seniors, you have established lifelong friendships, cared for

clients who have made a significant impact on your nursing

practice, developed and/or refined attributes of ethical and

professional behavior, and learned to provide quality nursing care service to your clients.

You have a future ahead of you that is wide open. I hope that your educational experience

with us contributed in innumerable ways to your development, and I applaud your future

success in the workforce. My wish is that you will periodically visit your “home by the sea”

to inspire future nursing students.

On behalf of the administrators, faculty, and staff at the School of Nursing, I would

like to congratulate you on your accomplishment. We wish you all the best in your future

nursing careers and life endeavors, wherever they may lead.

Sincerely,

Hilda M. Williamson, EdD, RN, FNP

Dr. Pier Broadnax is an Associate Professor and the Program

Director of the nursing program at the University of the District of

Columbia. In addition to this academic appointment, she was formerly

the Chairperson of the Undergraduate Nursing Program at Howard

University and held a courtesy appointment at Yale University and as a

Visiting Researcher at the School of Nursing, Ponitificia Univerisdad

Catolica de Chile (Catholic University of Chile), Santiago, Chile. She has

also held positions in the public and private sector settings as a Healthcare

Administrator. Her practice areas have included Adult Health, Quality

Management, Correctional Healthcare and School Health. She was a

Charter Member of the Mayor’s Health Policy Council for the District of

Columbia. Her most recent appointment is as co-lead of the District of

Columbia Action Coalition, Future of Nursing Campaign for

Action sponsored by AARP and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Additionally, she was

recognized as the Nurse of the Year (2016) by the Black Nurses Association of the Greater

Washington Area, Inc.

Dr. Broadnax has also served as a consultant in international nursing. She

traveled to Santiago, Chile to conduct a transcultural research project on the breast cancer

knowledge of Chilean women which was funded by the NIH Fogarty Center. She also was a

member of an international delegation to Europe to assess international nursing leadership

development. This experience included sessions with the World Health Organization and the

International Council of Nursing in Geneva, Switzerland as well as with the Royal College of

Nursing in London, England. She was invited to present at the 20th Anniversary of the

Oxford Roundtable at Oxford University in Oxford, England on the topic of obesity in

children. Interactions with these groups served to expand her world view of healthcare and

the role of nursing in improving the health of people in developing countries and underserved are-

as of the world.

Dr. Broadnax is a graduate of Winston-Salem State University with a BSN. She then

earned a Masters of Science in Advanced Adult Nursing with an Administrative Tract from

Hampton (Institute) University. She was then awarded a Ph.D. in Nursing with an emphasis on

Health Policy Development from George Mason University.

In her spare time, Dr. Broadnax enjoys nothing better than a good nap! After her nap, she

enjoys tending to her plants and has begun replicating old family recipes, making some

adjustments for today’s busy woman.

She is never far from her spiritual foundation and integrates this foundation in all of her

actions and projects. Her guiding light can be found in the words,

“If I can help somebody along the way, then my living will not be vain.”
