So whats the problem?

At the end of today in New York City, 8 millionplastic water bottles will be purchased, used, anddiscarded. Out of that 8 million, only about 2million will find their way to a recycling center, asthe rest will end up in a landfill, incinerator room,or even worst… the ocean.

At the end of today, a child will go hungry, ahomeless person will find refuge on a public parkbench, and a person fighting cancer will spend yetanother night hoping for a cure.

So whats the issue?

In 1982 New York City passed the Bottle Bill Law. Thislaw states that a minimum refundable deposit is placedon beverage containers in order to ensure a high rate ofrecycling or reuse. Because of this law consumers canreceive a 5-cent refund on every plastic water bottlepurchased, and on the majority of the soft drinkbeverage bottles they purchase. This law was created tohelp provide consumers with an incentive to recycle, inan effort to keep our landfills, incinerators, and oceansfree from plastic bottles.

At present New York’s beverage container-recycling rateis 34 percent. Our goal is to increase this rate to 50

Page 4: One Billion Bottles (Pitch Book)

percent by 2018, and recycle ONE BILLION BOTTLES in6 years.

One Billion Bottles

One Billion Bottles vision is to make New York aninnovator and leader in recycling-funded micro-philanthropy.

By making One Billion Bottles’ recycling bins andinternet-connected reverse vending machines (RVMs)available in popular public venues and populouscommunities, One Billion Bottles will make it moreconvenient and rewarding for people to recycle.

Reverse VendingMachines

Reverse Vending Machines(RVMs) are devices that acceptused (empty) beveragecontainers. Traditionally, the

machine returns a receipt to the user documenting theamount of their bottle refund, which the user must cashin. In lieu of issuing receipts, the software for OneBillion Bottles’ reverse manufacturing machines willbring up an interactive screen where users can credittheir donations to the account of an affiliated non-profit.

Page 7: One Billion Bottles (Pitch Book)

We are currently in talks with a Reverse VendingManufacturer to produce a prototype suitable for theOne Billion Bottles’ mission and operational structure.

Once our users, who we call “Billionaires”, use ourreverse vending machines, they will be encouraged tocreate an account on www.OneBillionBottles.com . Usingthe funds generated from their bottle returns, they canthen choose the not-for-profit organization where theywant to donate their recycling refund. In exchange fortheir donation, our “Billionaires” will earn pointsredeemable at the local businesses and/or nationalretailers that partner with us to offer “BillionaireRewards” to our most frequent bottle contributors. The use of One Billion Bottles’ RVMs is FREE to ourusers.

Who wins?

With our ambitious goal, everybody wins! One BillionBottles will create an interconnected web ofparticipation, recycling, and giving.

Below is a breakdown of how.

YOU, Our “Billionaires”!• As stated previously, for using our RVMs and by

creating a profile at www.OneBillionBottles.com , youwill receive incentives for recycling and thesatisfaction donating to a worthy cause! The moreyou donate the more you are rewarded!

Page 9: One Billion Bottles (Pitch Book)

Non-for-Profits• By sharing the One Billion Bottles’ vision of a

greener world, not-for-profit organizations will bethe beneficiary of monthly donations, and will beable to increase their visibility and reach by tellingtheir stories both on our website and on our RVMs.

Waste Management/ Sanitation Department• Recycling is critical to reducing the quantity of

waste that is produced daily and subsequently sentto landfills and incinerators. One Billion Bottles willdecrease the amount of bottles transported tolandfills by diverting waste for a cause; benefitingboth the environment, and non-for-profitorganizations, and minimizing the transportationcost associated with plastic waste.

Page 10: One Billion Bottles (Pitch Book)

Local Businesses/National Retailers• By partnering with One Billion Bottles to provide

incentives to our “Billionaires”, local businesses andnational retailers will see more traffic resulting inboth increased revenues and increased customerloyalty due to their participation.

Recycling Vendor Machines• American based companies will benefit by

manufacturing the machines needed to carry out theOne Billion Bottles mission. Our vision will helpcreate jobs.

New York City• Besides getting a cleaner environment and more of

her citizens donating, and besides recycling anadditional One Billion Bottles, New York will

Page 11: One Billion Bottles (Pitch Book)

increase its vigor as the leader of social andinnovative change.

Meet Susan

Susan currently thinks she’s doing a great job becauseshe takes the time to sort her recyclables (even thoughshe gets lazy sometimes and includes her bottles in hertrash). If Susan were to only recycle one bottle a day with us, itwould result in a daily 5-cent donation totaling $18.25for the year. Though it may seem like a small amount, that $18.25 could provide a meal for a child or ahomeless person, or even be a small contribution to themonumental task of finding a cure for cancer.

Now that’s something to be proud of!

Page 12: One Billion Bottles (Pitch Book)

So what if...?• …we could convince Susan to recycle her bottles

with us daily, showing her the effects that an un-recycled bottle will have on the environment?

• …we could then convince Susan to take the 5 centsshe would get from other recycling centers anddonate it instead?

• …Susan could convince her friends to do the sameand so on and so on? Just imagine if a millionpeople did what Susan did, how much would thatbe?

Page 13: One Billion Bottles (Pitch Book)

• …we could create a platform for people who want tohave a positive effect on both the environment andthose in need?

We can… and we will…
