Gary Moulton will be the keynote speaker at a Lewis and Clark regional meeting and pro- gram on Saturday, April 21 at the Missouri Department of Conservation Discovery Center, 4750 Troost, Kansas City, Mo. The meeting is from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. “We hope to have at least 100 people from around the Midwest, especially the Lewis and Clark chap- ters in Missouri and Nebraska, and even people from all over the coun- try,” said Jennifer Scott, chapter meeting chairman. “We also invite the public to attend. We urge mem- bers to bring friends and family. Of course, anyone can come for a por- tion of the day. It will be a great day, especially with the appearance by Dr. Moulton.” The cost to attend is $15 for reg- istration and materials. This summer, theMissouri-Kansas

Riverbend Chapter onceagain will offer a guidedmotorcoach tour of Lewisand Clark Trail sites.Organized and guided byhistorian Ross Marshall,the tour will visit trailsites to the east of KansasCity.

As in the past, thetour departs from 7th andPennsylvania in down-town Kansas City, Mo., at8:30 am and returns at5:00 pm. Parking is free.

This will be the last inour series of motorcoachtours covering the entireLewis and Clark expedi-tion route in westernMissouri and northeastKansas. This tour willcover approximately aweek of the 1804 expedi-tion from June 19-26.

We will journey alongHighway 210 and thenorth side of the MissouriRiver, making stops at

Randolph, La BenitePark, Liberty Bend,Missouri City and CooleyLake Park.

We will stop atRichmond and the won-derful Ray CountyCourthouse, then acrossthe river to Lexington.

In Lexington, we willvisit the LexingtonMuseum, have lunch (onour own) along the his-toric Main Street, fol-lowed by a walking andbus tour of historicLexington, led by localhistorian Roger Slusher.

We will continue thejourney along theMissouri River, stoppingat Napoleon Landing andending at Fort Osagewith a tour of the newEducation/ Visitor Centerthat overlooks the river.

If it is not yet official-ly open, we will get aguided tour anyway, led

by our own GordonJulich, immediate past-president of the nationalLewis and Clark TrailHeritage Foundation.

As we drive along, wewill have readings fromthe journals, discussionof early Missouri historyand many views of theMissouri River.

Cost is $35, whichincludes the usual mapsand information hand-outs plus admission toboth the museum andvisitor center.

Fort Osage, located inSibley, Mo., is a recon-struction of the fort origi-nally built in 1808 underthe direction of WilliamClark.

these are unique upon thetrail. Dan SturdevantChapter President saidwe felt like this is theright formula, it was anexcellent program, I did-n't see anything like italong the trail. Further,I'm a little disappointedthat we couldn't get thisformat out to the otherchapters to utilize it, butmaybe our personnel issuperior in making suchpresentations.

The Lewis and Clarkexpedition passed

through the Kansas Cityarea in June 1804 andSeptember 1806.

Our chapter boardvoted to establish a pro-gram to be held annuallyon two dates that com-memorate the expedi-tion’s upriver and down-river journeys.

To represent theupriver trip, a programwill be held at 6 p.m. onJune 26 each year atLewis and Clark HistoricPark at Kaw Point indowntown Kansas City,

Kans.To represent the

downriver trip, a pro-gram will be held at noonon September 15 eachyear at Lewis and ClarkPoint, 8th and Jeffersonin downtown KansasCity, Mo.

All chapter membersare encouraged to writethese dates on your cal-endar and make plans toattend these commemo-rative programs thisyear and each year inthe foreseeable future.

Board establishes annual programs on June 26 and September 15

Annual Commemoration SitesAfull-sized replica of

a Kanza earthlodge dwelling has beencompleted in the vicinitywhere a large Kanza vil-lage once stood nearAtchison, Ks.

The replica is a recre-ation of the dwellings theKanza built in northeastKansas from the mid1600s to the late 1700s. Alarge uninhabited Kanzavillage was recorded inthe journals of Lewis andClark when they campednear Independence Creekon July 4, 1804.

The replica was builtby volunteers for theAtchison CountyHistorical Society in col-

laboration with the KawNation using a grant fromthe National Park Service.

Construction of thereplica required countlessmonths of work by localvolunteers. It will be thelocation of summerenrichment classes andfamily educational andimmersion programssponsored by theAtchison CountyHistorical Society.

The lodge is part of alarger interpretive areathat includes a trail andone of 15 geodetic mark-ers placed by the NOAANational Geodetic Surveyduring the Lewis andClark Bicentennial.

The lodge was dedicated on September 17, 2006.
