Postojna Cave

Postojna cave is a complex of tunnels and halls, where drops of water do not merely cut channels, but also form rock. Through the centuries, the Pivka river, the river of seven names, has formed wonderful structures of stalagmites and stalactites, while today it beckons visitors from all over the world to enjoy its natural richness. Not far away, Planinsko polje, a geographical speciality of the Karst river basin, fans out. Here, the same Pivka river rises to the surface, but it is called Unica now, which is

known as one of the most beautiful European rivers by lovers of sports fishing, as its wealth attracts numbers of them. The surrounding area boasts abundant interesting natural and cultural attractions, as well as opportunities for sightseeing, adventures

and enjoyment. Why not visit us and select the Hotel Jama as your exclusive starting point to explore the KARST destination.

Welcome!

SloveniaYour sport fishing destinationSlovenia is a country with abundant water. The diversity of its landscape is enriched by numerous watercourses, water sources, waterfalls, gorges, and many high-moun-tain, lowland, natural and artificial lakes. As many as 45 rivers are over 5 kilometres in length and none is anything like the others. Altogether, Slovenia boasts more than ,000 hectares of water surface.Basically, the water courses in Slovenia are divided into the Adriatic and Danube (Black Sea) river basins. The principal river of the former is the So~a with its tributaries, while that of the latter is the Sava with its tributaries. The indigenous wildlife of both river basins differ one from another and each has its own characteristic representatives. As a speciality of the Adriatic basin it is essential to mention the So~a trout (Salmo marmoratus) and the So~a grayling (Thymallus thymallus adriaticus), whereas features of the rivers of the Danu-be basin are the Danubian salmon or huchen (Hucho hucho), a relative of the salmon and taimen, the brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) and the grayling (Thymallus thymallus). Should you choose Slovenia as your fishing destination, you will be able to enjoy the untamed power of Alpine rivers and to be at one with a magical and mysterious world, where dreamy rivers are born and disappear into the Karst underworld. Fly fishers from all over Europe are keen to come back to them again and again. Fishing on Slovenian lakes is especially magical, as you may always expect a bite from a big wels, pike or carp. In particular, carp fishing is becoming ever more popular, and it is not unusual to catch carp weighing in excess of 0 kg. Anglers take abundant plea-sure in fishing on many rivers for the nase, Danube roach, chub or barbel.Slovenia is a small but picturesque country which, in addition to fishing tourism, offers numerous other possibilities, making it a suitable tourist destination for the whole family. Last but not least we Slovenes are a friendly and hospitable nation boasting diverse wines and excellent culinary fare. Visit Slovenia – we’re sure you’ll be keen to come back again.

Fish populations

The fish populations in Slovenian rivers and lakes are heterogeneous. Even in high lying trout streams, there are, in addition to trout, some other accompanying species. In grayling areas and lower, the fish worlds count five to ten, and in many areas even more species of fish. The normal density is between 00 to 400 kg of fish per hectare with more than that in many areas, which proves good husbandry of the fish population.Even though the fish populations are in excellent condition, the fish are often very selective. The appropriate skill and good knowledge of the terrain are necessary when fishing for specific species in order to be successful. Experienced local fishing guides are very helpful.

The organisation of Slovenian freshwater fishing

Slovenia has a rich tradition going back more than a century of recreational fishing on rivers and lakes. The bases of the current organisation of recreational fishing were laid down in the 950’s. The fish in inland waters are a natural resource under the special protection of the State, while fishing in rivers and lakes is regulated by the Law on Freshwater Fishing (006).Fish are managed mostly by individual fishing clubs. These are associations with special authority as non-governmental organisations (NGO’s), which undertake management on behalf of the State. They manage approximately 94 % of Slovenian waters, whereas the remaining 6 % are managed by the public Fisheries Research Institute of Slovenia.

The most interesting fish species for recreational

fishing in Slovenian watersWaters in Slovenia are home to more than 90 species of freshwater fish. These in-

clude 33 species which are under permanent protection. Around 0 species attract recreational fishermen.

The marble trout (also known as the Adriatic trout) is one of the prides of Slove-nia. Its sole habitat worldwide is restricted to the waters of the Adriatic basin. It

is an endangered fish species. The primary cause of this is cross-breeding with the brown trout, which, with other simultaneous negative factors such as water fouling, regulation, blockage of water courses due to dam-building, overfishing etc., has led to a critical state of the fish population. The river So~a is a precise, classical case of how such factors come together. At the same time, it is the first and best example of the resolution of these problems. In 0 years of work, fish experts have entirely renewed its population in the upper So~a. This model of problem-solving is being

followed elsewhere.

The So~a trout’s registered weight of 5 kilograms makes it the largest European trout species. On average, fishermen catch individuals of between 40 and 50 cm in length on a daily basis. Well, even larger fish are more and more often hooked. During the evening rise, it is possible to catch small to medium-sized trout with a

dry fly, although the normal method is with a streamer and nymph.

In the majority of waters in the Adriatic basin, where both species coexist, hybrids between the brown trout and marble trout prevail. How colourful they are and

their patterns of pigmentation vary greatly depending on the intensity of cross-bre-eding. They may also grow to record lengths.

The brown trout is an indigenous species, known around the world and living in all continents. It is commonly found in Slovenia in upper and middle reaches of stre-

ams and rivers countrywide, except in the Northeast. The average size of the fish is 30 cm. It is not unusual to find larger individuals, especially in Karst waters. It shares

its habitat in many waters with the rainbow trout and in certain areas also with the brook trout.

The grayling is one of the most attractive species for the European fly-fishermen. Interest in it is in fact growing, as in most European waters its population is in steep

decline due to cormorants plundering their numbers. It is well represented in Slo-venian streams. Being an ideal fish for catching with an artificial fly, it may be fished successfully throughout the season. Its average size in best waters is around 40 cm.

There are more and more reports of grayling in excess of 50 cm being caught.

Due to its size, the Danube salmon or huchen is without doubt first and foremost among Slovenian trout species. The largest registered huchen catch, a respectable 7 kilograms in 005, makes it a prime target for huchen fishermen. The populati-on of the Danube salmon in Slovenian waters is in good health. The population is in a very good state in many rivers, such as on the Sava Bohinjka, the Sava around

Ljubljana and the Krka river.

5

The nase is the main fish species that draws anglers. It is a shoal fish, inhabiting the middle reaches of Slovenian waters. Angling with floats, the main method in use, on average results in fish between half and one kilogram in weight, while it is possible to catch individuals up to two kilograms. The Danube roach is its accompanying species. In some waters, especially in Karst areas, it predominates. It is also a shoal fish which grows to a weight of several kilograms. Anglers especially appreciate it due to its selectivity. The barbel is similarly selective, and is the most combative fish species among them. The best time to catch it is the summer months. Aficionados love it for its combativeness and size, as it can grow to 80 cm in length and weigh five or more kilograms.

The chub is an all-present wanderer. In shoals or individually, it is present from mountain streams to the silty meanders of low-lying streams. As an ideal fish to be caught, it is possible to take it using various methods and numerous baits all year round. In Slovenia, it reaches enviable sizes of two to three kilograms.

Discussing chub takes us from flowing to more or less still waters. The carp is the most sought-after fish species of this type of water. It inhabits numerous natural and artificial lakes, still pools, accumulations and fish ponds, but also the middle and lower reaches of the majority of our rivers. It is a popular sports fish and occupies first place among the Cyprinidae species in terms of its weight when caught. The average weight is between two and three kilograms, but it is common to catch record fish weighing more than ten kilograms. Ever more waters are designated for the fishing of trophy carp, where the practice is to return the fish to the water.

The bream is a common fish in these waters. It was formerly of lesser regard, but is now gaining in value. Ever more fishermen fish it for fun and enjoy the numerous bites of this fish, among which there are also individuals weighing between one and two kilograms.

The tench is not a very common fish and its weight is relatively low, but it is much appreciated among anglers. In good conditions, such as on Cerknica Lake, it often reaches weights of two to three kilograms.

The wels, the pike and the pike-perch are fish that are especially attractive to fis-hermen that have spinning at heart. They often share the same habitat, in particular lakes and accumulations. The pike is the most commonly found of the three, as it also resides in numerous flowing waters of both basins. The habitat of the wels is hi-ghly restricted and that of the pike-perch even more so. They are almost exclusively to be found in lakes. All of these fish can achieve relatively heavy weights in Slovenia – the pike-perch up to ten kilograms, the pike a little more and the wels even more than half a hundred-weight.

The Nadi`a is managed throughout its length in Slovenia by RD Tolmin – Tolmin Fishing Club,

the entire Lepenjica by ZZRS – the Fisheries Research Institute of Slovenia.

So~a, Lepenjica, Koritnica, Nadi`a

The indigenous marble trout, in the turquoise blue pools of the So~a river, as high as its source in the Trenta valley in the heart of the Julian Alps, leaps for

small flies in the evening twilight. Just below the village of So~a, it is joined by the So~a grayling, another kind of fish of the Adriatic river basin that are elsewhere

very rare. Their populations are very healthy throughout the So~a watershed. The best fishing is to be had from June onwards after the snow melt waters have drained away until the end of the season. In spring, when the So~a runs opaque with green-white melt water, fishing in its tributaries of the Lepenjica, Koritnica and Nadi`a, from whence snowy melt waters quickly drain, is more prominent. The gravel bottoms and pools of the So~a are easily accessible. Fis-

hing is possible along most of its reach; only in Korita and the Canyon at Srpenica access is sometimes impossible.

Page 9: on the rivers and lakes of Sloveniaribiska-zveza.si/uploads/brosure/RIBOLOV - ANG.pdfSlovenia Your sport fishing destination Slovenia is a country with abundant water. The diversity

7

Tolminka, Ba~a

In addition to the So~a trout, a natural attraction of the Tolminka, which joins the So~a at Tolmin, is the Tolminska korita gorge. The transparent green pools are home to the So~a trout and, in its lower reaches also the So~a grayling. When fly-fishing in upper stretches, it is necessary to have certain climbing skills, whereas the lower reaches are easily accessible.

The Ba~a river meanders gracefully along a lengthy valley to its confluence with the Idrijca. From the road running parallel to it, the eye of the fisherman is caught by its numerous meanders, rapids and pools. The trout here are truly colourful, as hybrids between the marble trout and brown trout in all their nuances predominate. The grayling is well represented in lower stretches.

Both waters are managed in their entirety by RD Tolmin – Tolmin Fishing Club · tel.: +386 5 38 7 0, · e-mail: [email protected], · www.ribiska-druzina-tolmin.si.

8

Idrijca, Trebu{~ica

The Idrijca is surely one of the richest and fishing-friendly salmonid waters in this part of Slovenia.

It is easily accessible from the road that runs parallel to it, while meanwhile it is also a very productive river, offering enjoyable fishing to fly fishers throughout the

season due to its having a suitable water level. The brown trout is predominant, with hybrids and grayling. The marble trout is present in lesser numbers, but the

individuals caught here are almost exclusively of trophy size.

The Trebu{~ica is its tributary in the lower part of the valley. This attractive river with its numerous pools is suitable mostly for fishermen who love solitude. The

marble trout is predominant, with hybrids also present.

9

Vipava

The Vipava is a productive Karst water of the Adriatic basin that adds a special flavour to the Vipava valley. In its upper and middle reaches, trout is present, inclu-ding marble trout, hybrids, brown trout and rainbow trout. The grayling is rare. The lower reaches are a paradise for anglers, as it is exceptionally rich in nase. At the same time, it is extremely alluring to fishermen who favour spinning for predatory fish species. The pike-perch is present in smaller numbers, while the pike population is very good, but is overshadowed by the wels. An annual feature every year is catches of trophy wels weighing over 50 kilograms.

Reka, Klivnik Mola

The globally attractive [kocjanska jama cave system is part of the Reka river system, where the river descends into the Karst underworld. As far as Ilirska Bistrica it is

relatively insignificant, but from there on it gains strength from its lowland tributaries and is transformed into a respectably potent river, which used to power sawmills

and mills. On its passage from its source in Gorski Kotar (Croatia), the Reka is home to the indigenous marble trout, hybrids and the predominant brown trout. There are two artificial lakes on its tributaries. The water of the Klivnik Lake accu-

mulation is clear, clean and relatively cool. In it, in addition to the trout, the pike-per-ch is one of the most interesting fish. The Mola Lake accumulation is renowned for

its record catches of carp, grass carp and pike.

The Reka and the Klivnik and Mola accumulati-on lakes are managed by RD Bistrica – Bistrica Fishing Club from Ilirska Bistrica. · tel.: +386 40 47 7, · e-mail: s5[email protected], · www.rd-bistrica.com.

Ri`ana

The Ri`ana is the only larger river of the Slovenian coast that flows directly into the Adriatic Sea. Its reaches are short, but rich. Although during summertime, due to drought and the extraction of water, the Ri`ana can barely be called a river, it offers wonderful experiences to fly fishermen. This is especially true in early spring when, while inland areas still sleep in winter, the coastal area is already in full bloom. Du-ring the day, trout, among which the brown trout is predominant, the ever-present hybrids and the more and more frequently found marble trout intensively hunt nymphs in the safety of the depths. In the evening, abundant swarms of insects lure them from the depths to fill their stomachs at a fully laden table.

The Ri`ana is managed in its entirety by RD Koper – Koper Fishing Club · tel.: +386 5 653 07 40, +386 3 780 308, · e-mail: [email protected], · www.ribiska-zveza.si.

Sava Bohinjka, Bohinj Lake, Bled Lake,

Radovna

The Sava Bohinjka is a river having no spring, as it is born from Bohinj Lake. It is classical grayling water with excellent fish fond of other species. All categories of

grayling are present in large numbers, and the best of them can be trophy individu-als of 50 cm and more. The brown trout population is bigger than its share in the catch suggests, where the aggressive rainbow trout predominates. Simultaneously,

the Sava Bohinjka is an outstanding huchen stream. The huchen may not always reach record size, but its numbers are such that it may be successfully fished and

caught by fly-fishing.Bohinjsko jezero (Bohinj Lake) is Slovenia’s largest natural lake. Its predominant

fish is the char, which is mostly caught by deep fishing from boats. In certain areas, it is also possible to catch it with artificial flies. The lake trout is a rare catch, as

only individual fishermen catch it trolling. The chub on the surface, the burbot in the depths and the perch along the lake shore are additional fish species that are

interesting to the sports fisherman.

Blejsko jezero (Bled Lake) and its island are the central tourist attraction of Gorenjska region. It is famous among fishermen for its trophy individuals of carp, weighing in excess of 0 kg. The wels, pike and pike-perch are among them too.

Fishing is possible trolling from a boat and angling from the shore.

The northern arm of the Sava river is born at the springs at Zelenci near Rate~e near the Slovenian – Italian border. From its source it gathers water, so that it is

transformed from a small stream to a river at Jesenice. In its entirety, the Sava Dolin-ka is a classic salmonid stream. The brown trout and rainbow trout are present

throughout. They are numerous, and the average size is also very good. In the Moste Lake accumulation both species reach capital sizes. The grayling inhabits the lower part of the fishing grounds. The river is easily accessible from the main road, while

access to the water is not difficult either.

Tr`i{ka Bistrica, Kokra

Water from the steep slopes of the Karavanke flow and unite to form the Tr`i{ka Bistrica river, a left tributary of the Sava. Its bed has a large drop leading to its ha-ving torrential characteristics. The water is cold, of an extremely transparent, specific blue green colour. The water is fully productive and inhabited by the brown trout and rainbow trout which reach enviable sizes.

A little further to the east, the Kokra river has cut a valley for itself high in the Kamnik Alps. It is relatively easy to get to and fish, while only in Kranj, just before it joins the Sava, it dips into a canyon that is somewhat harder to access. Its upper rea-ches are inhabited by the brown trout, accompanied by the rainbow trout. From Preddvor downstream, the river affords habitat to the grayling as well.

From the confluence of the Sava Bohinjka and the Sava Dolinka downstream the Sava river drifts away from the main highways. Its flows remind one of the good old days. Its not very easily accessible gravel beds, the deep pools and quiet passages in its stretch between the inflow of the Tr`i{ka Bistrica downstream to Kranj are open to the rare admirers of the remaining wilderness. There are indeed fewer fish here than in maintained fishing grounds, but they are all wild Sava-born fish. This area still offers trophy grayling and brown trout, not to mention the abundant rainbow trout.Below Kranj, the Sava gorge is lost in the accumulation of the hydropower plant (HPP) at 'Mav~i~e' – Trboje Lake. The change of the natural environment best suits cyprinids. Hundreds of nase glitter when they strike the rocks above the accumu-lation. The depths of the lake hide huge pike and pike-perch, in addition to which there are chub and trophy carp. This scene is repeated in the next accumulation at HPP 'Medvode' at Zbilje Lake.

Below the Medvode hydropower plant dam, the previous image of the Sava is somewhat restored. Cascades, rapids, pools and quiet interludes follow one another. The nase, barbel and chub are the main fish species. Simultaneously, this is the main huchen fishing ground on the Sava. Catches of trophy huchen of a metre and more in length and weighing more than ten kilograms are registered every year. It was here in 005 that the largest Slovenian huchen, weighing 7.4 kg was caught.

Sora(Poljanska, Sel{ka and common Sora)

Just like the Sava, the Sora is also born from two arms. The northern arm, the Sel{ka Sora, is a stretch of water exceptionally well inhabited by trout, predomi-nantly brown trout and rainbow trout. In its upper reaches in the Dav~a valley it is more reminiscent of a mountain stream, whereas at @elezniki it becomes a

respectable river. From here on, in addition to trout, the grayling is also present in certain parts.

The southern arm, the Poljanska Sora, has its source under the watershed of the Danube and Adriatic basins. Immediately below the source, it is possible to find not only the brown trout, but also the grayling. Throughout its length, the Poljan{~ica is

ideal grayling water and also affords habitat for the huchen. The rapids, pools and channels are easily accessible, so that the river is fishable in its entirety. It is ideal for

fly-fishing, especially grayling.

The two Soras come together in the centre of [kofja Loka. From here on, the Sora obtains its mixed character. The nase, barbel and chub are ever more frequent,

while there are fewer salmonids. From here to the inflow into the Sava only the Danubian salmon persists, to whom the shoal coarse fish species are a welcome

catch.

Unica

The Unica river’s journey begins on the southern edge of one of the most beautiful and best-preserved Karst plateaus at the confluence of the Pivka and Malen{~ica. For many years one of the world’s best grayling waters in the world of fly-fisher-men, the Unica winds its way several times back and forth across the whole width of Planinsko polje (valley), and thus it is as much as three times longer than the 6-kilometre long valley itself. Living conditions for fish are extremely good here. There are times between autumn and late spring when such are the volumes of water rising to the surface that the sinkholes cannot suck them all down below ground. At these times, much of Planinsko Polje is flooded for up to a month. In this way, the fish receive an additional source of food additional to their already well-stocked table.

There are no rainbow trout in the Unica. Thus, even the best fly-fishermen and local experts have to confess their weaknesses in the face of nature. But it richly still rewards its most faithful adherents for their fidelity. At Mayfly time and again in early summer, after the birth of stone-flies and caddis-flies, fly-fishermen from all over the world congregate here. This is the time when it is possible, in the early morning breaking of the day, when the first rays of the sun appear, to trick a trophy grayling. Alternatively, in the evening twilight, a trophy colourful brown trout.

Ljubljanica

The underground waters of the Unica, fed by other inflows, come to the light of day in several springs on the edge of the Ljubljansko barje (marshes) near Vrhnika.

Thus, as soon as it is born, the Ljubljanica is a powerful river with abundant water. It has a very small drop as far as Ljubljana and having an average depth of more than

four metres it is more reminiscent of a lazy lowland river than a rich Karst water. The dark green river, surrounded by plentiful bank-side vegetation, which enables

good fishing especially from a boat, hides trout, grayling and huchen, as well as Danube roach, chub and pike. Every year, several trophy individuals of these species

are caught.

Cerknica Lake

The intermittent Cerknica Lake is one of the global attractions of the Slovenian Karst. Abundant autumn precipitation fills the valley with water, which in ideal con-ditions remains to the start of summer. The flooded grassy fields are ideal breeding grounds for pike, tench and chub, while at the same time being rich in food for their offspring and young. With the arrival of summer, the water retreats to the riverbed and with it the fish. The concentration of fish is large and thus the fishing is extremely good. The main sports fish is the pike, which due to the intermittent nature of the lake does not reach exceptional size, but ensures good fishing due to its abundance. The tench and chub reach trophy sizes, as does the carp. A catch of a carp weighing ten or more kilograms is not unusual.

Krka

The River Krka is best known for its numerous natural cascades over which its water rushes into transparently green pools. It is most colourful in spring, when the fresh green vegetation emphasises the characteristically green colour of its pools. It is the only Slovenian river where all fish belts follow one another in its 93-kilome-tre length. From its source downstream, it is wonderful trout territory with brown trout and rainbow trout. At Zagradec, they are joined by the grayling, the huchen,

as well as cyprinid species. The Danube roach, nase and chub are resident all the way to its inflow into the Sava. Below Novo mesto, there are excellent places to

Kolpa

The Kolpa river and its valley have by miraculous coincidence managed to avoid the fate of most European rivers. It still flows without obstruction, retreated into another long past period. In the still calm Kolpa valley, the red-spotted brown trout catch flies in the way that they always have. Behind a rock in the middle of a bub-bling stream, the orange tail fin gives away the presence of a resting grayling. These two, together with the huchen, live in the upper reaches between Osilnica and Fara. Downstream from the inflow of the Kupica on the Croatian side the river is home to barbel, chub, Danube roach and nase. Grayling may be found as far as Dol. Savinja, Dreta, [martno Lake, Slivnica Lake

SavinjaIn the Rinka Waterfall’s 90-metre jump over rocks the Savinja river is born in Logar valley. More than half of its 95-kilometre reach is inhabited by those species of fish most interesting to the fly-fishermen. These include brown trout and grayling, whi-

ch are joined by rainbow trout and huchen at Ljubno.

Fly-fishermen find the Savinja most beautiful in the upper parts of the valley. When spring carries off the melt waters, the second half of May is a pure pleasure for dry fly fishing. The fish are not very selective and successful fishing continues into June. The water level drops with the arrival of the hot days of summer and the fish get fussier. Now successful dry-fly fishing is restricted to morning and evening hours,

but there is no limit to nymph fishing.

The Dreta river is a friendly, calm sub-alpine river. Brown trout, rainbow trout and grayling are fish that fly-fishermen focus on. It is an easily accessible and very

fishable stretch of water.

Along the Savinja, there are numerous accumulations of varying sizes, intended above all for sporting fishing of cyprinids. Angling and bottom-fishing are the main

fishing methods. However, spinners are also rewarded with record catches of wels, pike and pike-perch at [martinsko jezero (Lake) near Celje and Slivni{ko jezero

from the lazy peace of the edge of the Pannonian plain. Its characteristics include oxbow lakes, where a particular range of aquatic fauna has been preserved, such

as mudminnow. In the oxbow lakes and the arms of the river coarse fishermen are on the trail of tench, Crucian carp, carp, bream, as well as perch, pike and wels. The

Although carp are pre-sent, most fishermen here are after bream. In addition to the bream, the lake also has grass carp (also known as white amur), pike and pike-perch.

Gaj{evsko jezero (77 ha) is similar to this. It was built by damming the [~avnica ri-ver and has in places merged well with the natural environment, in which numerous creatures have found their homes. The lake is inhabited by carp, grass carp, bream, pike-perch, pike and wels.

The emerald river is one that for some time timidly hides everything from us, just to throw all in front of our eyes with such might that it takes your breath away in the next moment. The So~a river is an untamed stubborn beauty that inscribes itself in this beautiful corner of the world again and again and to which it gives its name and life.

The So~a valley and her crystal riv-ers • The So~a, Idrijca, Ba~a and Tolminka are rivers that entice you to their embrace again and again. Each of them is different and headstrong, but on each of them you will find plenty of room for your dreams. Step into this world and get to know it.

Hotel Hvala • You will find us in western Slovenia, in the small Mediter-ranean town of Kobarid, in the heart of the So~a valley with the Julian Alps as a backdrop. The family-run four-star hotel offers 31 rooms with 61 beds, the Topli val restaurant, a storeroom for fishing equipment, a drying room, a sales point for fishing lures and permits, sauna, cycle storeroom, rent-a-bike, rent-a-car and info point.

Restaurant Topli Val • Natural, healthy and tasty cuisine has been our passion since as far back as 1976. Wonderful days on the rivers carry on with culi-nary pleasures, which are prepared by our masters of fine tastes. Whether these are created on the basis of simple local food or sea specialities, they will always lead you into temptation with one sole goal. To make your smile the icing on the cake of a day wonderfully spent.
