On Sunday mornings I’ve begun a “3-part series” laying out 3 reasons everyone in our church family should consider joining a small group. The first reason I shared this past Sunday was the value of the connections we make with one another. I hope I made my case well and I won’t spoil the next two weeks for you by sharing the remaining two reasons. I will make this observation though, all three reasons are benefits a person would experience by joining a small group. All three reasons in some way make the case that it is in your self interest to sign up. So let me offer to you, my faithful newsletter readers, a fourth reason. You should join a small group for others. Join a group because it is what is best for our church family. Join a group because it encourages others. Join a group because your participation may inspire others to jump in as well. Join a group because for this ministry to be at its best it needs all types of people from all generations. If the 3 reasons I give on Sunday mornings are not sufficient to convince you that is in your self interest to join a group then don’t. Join for others. “So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Philippians 2:1-4

On Sunday mornings I’ve begun a “3-part series” laying out 3 reasons

everyone in our church family should consider joining a small group. The first

reason I shared this past Sunday was the value of the connections we make with

one another. I hope I made my case well and I won’t spoil the next two weeks for

you by sharing the remaining two reasons. I will make this observation though,

all three reasons are benefits a person would experience by joining a small group.

All three reasons in some way make the case that it is in your self interest to sign

up.

So let me offer to you, my faithful newsletter readers, a fourth reason. You

should join a small group for others. Join a group because it is what is best for

our church family. Join a group because it encourages others. Join a group

because your participation may inspire others to jump in as well. Join a group

because for this ministry to be at its best it needs all types of people from all

generations. If the 3 reasons I give on Sunday mornings are not sufficient to

convince you that is in your self interest to join a group then don’t. Join for

others.

“So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort

from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and

sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having

the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing

from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others

more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only

to his own interests, but also to the

interests of others.”

Philippians 2:1-4

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that

hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing

our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning

its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:1-2)

These are a couple of my favorite verses in Scripture. We’ve chosen John 15:5 to be the theme verse

for our youth group. But I’d have to say that these couple verses are equally as powerful and important.

One of the best parts of running the Oklahoma City Marathon is the final turn onto Broadway Ave

heading towards the finish line. It’s great because as a runner you know you’re near your goal. But it’s also

special because both sides of the street are lined with literally tens of thousands of people cheering you on

towards the finish. Suddenly, all the terrible things that are going on in your body because you’ve just run 26

miles become an afterthought.

In the tenth and eleventh chapters of Hebrews the writer has just talked about the faith of Abel, Enoch,

Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Israel as they crossed the Red Sea, Rahab, Gideon, Samson,

David, Samuel, and the prophets. He begins the twelfth chapter reminding us that these people are witnesses to

the race we are running in Jesus Christ. How great is it to think that Moses and David are cheering us on?

Suddenly, the troubles of this world don’t seem quite so daunting.

But, because these witnesses are watching us we have something we must do. We must lay aside every

weight and sin that entangles us as we run. We are often tempted to ask the question, “Is this a sin?” ddThat

becomes the standard for whether or not we participate in something. John Piper says that is the lowest

question we can ask. What we ought to ask is, “Does it help me run?” Do the things we participate in, do the

things we consume help us to become more Christ-like? If not, we need to lay them down, sin or not. We need

to do this as individuals and we also need to be able to do this collectively, as the local body of Christ.

So how do we know if these things help us run? We fix our eyes on Jesus, the one who has run the

race before us (pioneer) in a complete and flawless way (perfecter). When our eyes are fixed on Christ the

things of the world are revealed for what they really are. Weights that easily entangle or things that help us

run.
