Event descriptions
Individual normal hill competi-tion is an event in whichathletes jump from a HS 105 hill(HS = hill size). The longestdistance reached is around 105
meters. Athletes make twojumps, with only the athleteswith the best results in the first
jump making a second jump.The highest total score wins.
Team competition, again only for themen this year, takes place on the
large hill, the HS 140. Teams consistof four people. In the final round thefield is reduced to the eight teamswith the highest scores on the first
jump. The team with the highesttotal score for all jumps is declaredthe winner.

For the men, individual large hill competition is an event inwhich athletes jump from an HS 140. Therefore, the length ofthe jump may be up to 140 meters or a little more. The
competition is structured and jumpers are scored by judges forform, not just pure distance, just like on the normal hill.

U.S. had no individual orteam winners, though BillDemong, of Park City, did
win gold in nordic combined,which involves jumping offthe large hill. JohnnySpillane won silver in theevent. Demong is returningto defend his gold medal.

won a decade-long fight to gettheir sport in theWinter Olympics, join-ing their male counter-parts on the 105-meternormal hill at the RusSki Gorki
Ski Jumping Center. Reigningworld champion Sarah Hendrickson,of Park City, injured just this past August,has returned to the hill and pronouncedherself ready for competition. She joins former
world champion Lindsey Van and Jessica Jerome,also of Park City, on the inaugural womens team. A
young U.S. mens team featuring no one over 25 yearsof age includes three-time Olympian Anders Johnson.
