Council Summary – October 18, 2017

Pastor Wach and five members were present.

Pastor Wach opened the meeting with witness to the Power of Prayer. The youth of Geneseo UMC have expressed interest in organizing/meeting on a regular basis. A young couple has accepted the invitation to sponsor the Youth Group. Truly an answer to prayer.

The Budget Committee met on October 18. The proposed 2018 Budget will be presented to the Council on November 14.

The Staff Parish Relations committee centered on coordinating training sessions for interested members to gain knowledge related to church technical media and the website.

The Trustees have quotes from contractors interested in restoring the church, parsonage, and unattached garage due to the hail damage last spring. The bids will be reviewed at the next meeting of the Board of Trustees.

The Council and Pastor Wach collaborated to complete the Mission and Ministry Plan for 2018. This plan will be filed with the Northeast District Superintendent at the October 29 Charge Conference.

A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

“The Smell of Turkey”

On Thanksgiving morning I am like a puppy with a new toy. I cruise through the house in a good mood smiling and laughing for no apparent reason. Not that I am ever not in a good mood, but this is different. There is literally something in the air; the smell of turkey in the oven. Maybe it is the combination of knowing one of my favorite meals is on the way, and a day of celebration with family and maybe some football on television. Whatever it is, it is usually an all around good day. A day for which I am truly thankful.

I know this holiday is about more than being thankful for the smell of turkey in the oven. I know that when I pause from my ‘turkey frenzy’ I have much more for which I am thankful. God has blessed me with a good life. I am luckier than I am smart, I have an awesome family, and have been given the privilege of serving my God in a way I did not expect. On these good things I reflect and lift up praises of thanksgiving. For it is not in my own power that any of these blessings exist. It is that recognition of who I am as a child of God that makes this and every day such an awesome experience. I pray that when you wake on Thanksgiving morning that you will sense God’s love and blessings in your life.

Like that smell of turkey that drifts into every corner of the house, let that spiritual sense of what is good and holy flow all around us. When we do, the smiles come out. When we do, our better selves seem to appear. This is a gift from God for which we can be truly thankful.

In Philippians 4:7 Paul writes, “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

This peace is even better than the smell of turkey on Thanksgiving morning. It is sense of well being and order that we each need in our lives. Let God lead you through this holiday season, showing you many blessings along the way.

Happy Thanksgiving

Pastor Harry

A belated thank-you to the Geneseo People,

For the prayers, stopping by with offers of help, caring phone calls, and food after our fire on June 24th. It’s been a long process but it’s coming.

We appreciate the thoughtfulness and consideration shown by everyone.

Thanks again,

Edwin and Beverly Baldwin Dave Baldwin

The Ice Cream Social Committee would like to thank all those who helped make this year’s social a success. Whether you brought baked goods, made ice cream, cleaned dishes, poured root beer, or performed other tasks that needed done, your contribution is sincerely appreciated. The two organizations supported by the proceeds are Crosslines and Knox Blocks Foundation, both from La Porte City. Final contribution amounts totaled to $1,942.43, which will be equally distributed to our two organizations. Blessings, Scott & Tammi Neuendorf and Guy & Kate Mitchell

In 2011, Geneseo began a special ministry designed to help children by providing developmentally appropriate Bibles at key time in their Christian education (3-years old, kindergarten, & 3rd grade). This ministry began through Lucille Fuller memorial funds and continues through this special offering taken each November on Bible Sunday. Please consider making a gift to help our children grow in life-giving faith!

Please let Pastor Harry know if you have children of these ages as soon as possible, so they can be recipients as well!

Congrats again to Sean Mitchell for receiving his 3rd grade Bible this year!

WHAT IS #GIVINGTUESDAY?

Now in its sixth year, #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Observed on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving. Since its inaugural year in 2012, #GivingTuesday has become a movement that celebrates and supports giving and philanthropy with events throughout the year and a growing catalog of resources.

This UMC #GivingTuesday United Methodists will “Give light. Give love. Give life.”

On November 28th, United Methodists will come together to support the work of Advance projects and missionaries on UMC #GivingTuesday. Sponsored by the denomination’s General Board of Global Ministries, individuals, churches, and annual conferences (regional offices) combine Advent and Christmas seasonal giving with global mission and outreach opportunities. The theme for the 2016 campaign is “Give Light. Give Love. Give Life.”

In 2016, More than 2,550 persons in 19 countries contributed a total of $853,909.78 to United Methodist mission projects and missionary support through the 2016 UMC #GivingTuesday campaign.

In terms of overall mission giving, the 2016 UMC #GivingTuesday result was almost twice that of any single day’s non-Giving Tuesday receipts of the past. That record was set by $492,000 contributed to UMCOR on one day in response to the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

The Advance remains committed to sustaining a strong foundation that allows projects and missionaries to build relationships and empower their ministries. In the past, we were fortunate to offer matching funds to motivate giving. This year, while matching funds will not be available, we remain confident that generous supporters will continue their commitment to vital ministry. We have witnessed your ability to utilize The Advance to change your communities positively. To keep this momentum going, The Advance continues to allocate 100% of all giving to the designated project and missionary.

To learn more about “The Advance” visit their website http://www.umcmission.org/Give-to-Mission/The-Advance.

To give online: On November 28th, go to UMCmission.org. Click on “Give to Mission” and “Search for Projects.” You can browse for a project that speaks to your heart. (Or enter one of the numbers from the following projects.) When you get to the project description, you can click on the big red “donate now” button on the right of the screen. You’ll be prompted to enter your giving information. Please remember to credit Geneseo UMC for this gift so it is included towards our mission-giving goals.

Projects to consider include:

#982450—International Disaster Response (this will include support during and after events like tsunamis, Cholera & Ebola outbreaks)

#901670—U.S. Disaster Response (UMCOR-U.S.)

To give offline: Write a check or make a cash donation between NOW & November 26th to Geneseo UMC and make a memo note of which project you would like to support. We will make an online donation in that amount on November 28th.
