Dear Parishioners,“For you had gone astray like sheep, but you have now returned to the shepherd.”

This Fourth Sunday of the Easter Season is called Good Shepherd Sunday. Every year the scriptures focus on Jesus as the Good Shepherd. The above quote is taken from this weekend’s second reading from the Letter of St. Peter.

As a shepherd leads his flock, protects his flock, loves his flock, so is Jesus, our shepherd, the one who leads, guides and protects.

During this stressful time, we need the Good Shepherd!

This focus got me thinking of the people that “shepherd” me. I am sure we all have people who in a sense shepherd us, who bring the best out of us, that can be honest with us. These shepherds give us a glimpse into the power of the ultimate shepherd, Jesus Christ.

In this time of hunkering down at home, I think of the place I live and the people I am living with. I feel so blessed to be where I am. In the almost 40 years I have been a priest I have never been in a happier rectory. Rectory living is somewhat a roll of the dice, you can’t pick the people you are living with. I started thinking about the ways, I am “shepherded” by the priests I am living with. Fr. Nick is really a scholar and is constantly studying and growing in his grasp of the deeper theological and spiritual dimensions of faith. He is an extraordinary preacher and I have had more of an opportunity to listen to his homilies because of the YouTube Masses. So many of them are publishable. He shepherds me to a deeper appreciation of the power of God’s word proclaimed. Our theological tradition is a treasure.

Fr. Patrick is a joy to be around. He has had such a challenging first year of priesthood. He had to deal with visa complications that required periods of being away. His Mom and Dad had to deal with serious illness. For most newly ordained the highlight of your first year is Holy Week and Easter and he was met with an empty church. He is utterly convinced of the love of Jesus Christ. He radiates that conviction. He shepherds me to trust more in the power of Jesus’s love of us.

Fr. Barrett and I go way back. His life was a train wreck and when he met me in the seminary, I got him back on the track. Only kidding! Jim has been a great friend; we have travelled the world and have shared in so much over the years. Jim brings a wealth of experience and wisdom to his ministry. If there is anyone who should be called “father” it is him. He shepherds me in remembering what a privilege it is to be a priest and to treasure the moments we are invited into the people’s lives we minister to.

All of us have shepherds; this week think of those voices in your own life.

The month of May is a time of special devotion to the Blessed Mother. Our parish is under the patronage of the Blessed Mother. Our new statue of Mary arrived from her voyage that began in Italy. She is carved from the same quarry that Michelangelo and Bernini used. She is in a warehouse while we prepare the place in the Hellerman Garden where she will be placed.

Pope Francis has made a special appeal to the world to pray for the intercession of the Blessed Mother as we deal with the pandemic. He has encouraged the daily praying of the rosary. I am looking into the possibility of live streaming the praying of the rosary on Fridays. More info to come as I work out the logistics.

Had a great zoom meeting with the Parish Pastoral Council and several finance related zoom meetings.

May your week be blessed! Our Lady of Perpetual Help Pray for us!

Fr. Jerry Boland

seek, share, rejoice - pastor's letter...

Jerry Boland, Pastor

Thoughts on the

Sunday ScripturesIn today’s gospel Jesus tries to describe the trust relationship between himself and his followers using the images of a shepherd and a gate for the sheep.

In both cases, it is about who or what the sheep can trust, whether shepherd or path, leading the Lord’s followers into a bountiful pasture.

As the good shepherd, the sheep hear, follow, flee false shepherds, and are able to discern whom to trust. Good stewards understand that, no matter how much they are confronted by fear and anxiety, the Lord will not abandon those who follow him.

Hearing Jesus’ voice does not always happen easily, though, even for those who are closest to him.

In what ways do we dispose ourselves to listen to the shepherd’s voice? What obstacles keep us from hearing the Lord?

Centennial NewsHow will our Centennial Celebration continue? With constant prayer, acts of love and trust in GodThe economy may be paused, schools shuttered, and our social lives on hold but 100 Years of Grace at OLPH continues. We trust in God’s plan for our parish as he works a mysterious yet beautiful miracle of grace that our human minds cannot even imagine. So let us continue to do what we set out to do last September. Let’s challenge ourselves to give praise and thanks to God for all the graces he has bestowed on our parish!

A Centennial Challenge for the Pandemic: The One-Word PrayerBecause of Jesus’ sacrifice, God gave the Son the most powerful name there is—a name that if uttered constantly could slow or even stop a pandemic. Let's speak Jesus’ name repeatedly every day during this difficult time to glorify him and demonstrate our trust in his merciful love.

The One-Word Prayer Challenge: Repeat reverently the name of Jesus over and over for one straight minute each day. You should be able to say “Jesus” around 60 times in one minute, whether it’s during prayer time or your everyday activities and tasks. It’s so very easy and gratifying as well.

If 100 people commit to this challenge, the name of Jesus will be said 6,000 times in one day. In 30 days, Jesus’ name will be said 180,000 times!

On the homepage of our olphglenview.org website you will see graphic box. Simply click on the white box to join The One-Word Prayer Challenge.

The initial response has been very strong and it will only get stronger as more people join us.

If you haven't done so yet, please become of part of this challenge.

"He humbled himself by becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." – Philippians 2:8-11

We need your support now more than ever!As you know, Sunday collections are vital to the health and sustainability of OLPH. We are always so thankful for the generosity of our parishioners. During this difficult time, we ask that you continue to support our church. With more and more restrictions in our ability to gather together or even leave our homes, it has become imperative that parishioners begin to utilize our GiveCentral online giving portal. We do understand that, up until now, some of us have been reluctant to switch from writing checks to using an online method. We seriously ask you at this time to try GiveCentral.

Accessing our GiveCentral Portal OnlineOn our website and in most of our eblasts you will see the Give Central Logo depicted here.

This logo will always be a live link to our OLPH GiveCentral homepage. Whenever you see this logo on our website or in an eblast, you will be able to click on it and it will take you directly to our portal.

Accessing our GiveCentral Portal from Your PhoneTo access our OLPH GiveCentral homepage from your phone, point your phone camera app at the qr code below. You will simply and easily be able to donate to our Sunday collection directly from your phone.

Or dial our text-to-engage number 570-354-6574 and then text the word "Sunday" to make your gift.

Our GiveCentral Home PageThe image below is a screen shot of our OLPH GiveCentral homepage. To make your regular Sunday donation, click on the "Sunday Giving" icon which has the image of our church on it.

Need assistance? We want to make this process as simple as we can for everyone.Have any questions about setting up your online donations through GiveCentral? Don't worry, we can help! Just contact our Office Manager Laura Kearney and she will assist you. Laura can be reached directly at (847) 729-2936 or at [email protected]

To summarize, we understand that making the change from writing a paper check to making a donation through an online portal may be outside of your comfort level. However, please understand how important it is for the vitality of our church that you give it a try.If for any reason you still are not comfortable making the switch, we ask that you continue to support our Church in the best way you are able.Thank you and God bless you all as we work together to get through this national health crisis.
