seek, share, rejoice - pastor's letter

Dear Parishioners,

“I should like you to be free from anxieties.”

In Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians this weekend, he invites us to center our lives on the Lord. This centering will bring us peace and relief from anxiety.

There are many sources of anxiety in our lives. Stress can be quite debilitat-ing. The power of our faith can reas-sure us and help us to keep things in perspective.

Parents can deal with a lot of anxiety when it comes to raising their children. A major aspect of the mission of our parish is the education and formation of our children. We have 850 children in our parish school, almost 1000 in religious education, and we launched a youth ministry program this year for our teens. This represent a tremen-dous investment in the future of our children.

Sunday begins Catholic Schools Week in which we focus attention on our parish school. We are deeply blessed by the work of Dr. Mills, and the faculty and staff of OLPH School. We are one of the fl agship schools in the Archdiocese.

You will see in this week’s bulletin, and on our website, many activities and programs taking place to commemo-rate Catholic Schools Week. You are most welcome to join in the festivities.

Last week I mentioned the issue of bullying that is a painful reality in most schools. One of the special events this week that is open to all parents is a presentation on the topic by Carrie Goldman. She is a nationally known expert on this topic. Her presentation is Thursday, February 1 at 8:30 a.m. in McDonnell Hall. Please come!

Lisa Otter Rose, the daughter of parish-ioner Lynn Colluzzi, has written a won-derful book for children on the issue of bullying entitled, You’ve Got Verve, Jamie Ireland! I highly recommend it and it is at the Glenview Public Library.

Next weekend is Commitment Sunday for the Annual Catholic Appeal. There is information about the Campaign in the bulletin. This year’s theme, Come, Follow Me, is an invitation to be Christ for others and to live in a community of discipleship.

Our campaign goal is $129,195. Any money received above the goal, remains here at OLPH. In the past we have exceeded our goal and have been able to invest those resources in our beautiful campus. The Appeal provides critical resources for the ministry of the archdiocese and beyond. Thank you for your consideration of supporting the Annual Catholic Appeal.

Next Sunday is also Scout Sunday. At the 7:30 a.m. Mass, several of our scouts will be recognized with religious medals they have earned. One of the much-anticipated events of the year, is their Pancake Breakfast. All morning the scouts will be preparing and serv-ing breakfast in the Playdium.

On Saturday of this weekend, I will take my pinewood derby car out of mothballs to enter it in the annual race. Last year I lost all four wheels halfway through, so I don’t have high hopes for this year.

Our parish has always been a great supporter of Catholic Charities. The Cardinal recently appointed Martin Endre, Matthew Kline, Patricia Perillo and Luis Toledo to the Board of Advisors of Catholic Charities. He reappointed Joseph Altonji, Thomas Kramer, Lisa Lathrop, Michael Monticello, Lawrence Ryan, Robert Schank and Richard Tilghman to the Board of Advisors. Thank you for your generous service to this vital outreach of the Archdiocese.

Have a blessed week,

Fr. Jerry Boland

Thoughts on the

Sunday

Scriptures

In today’s Gospel we hear proclaimed the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. He teaches. He heals. And all are amazed.

By their baptism, Christian stewards realize they are called to do the same in their lives. They are called to be the light of Christ each day.

As we bring closure to the beginning of this new year, now is a good time to ask the Lord to fi ll our hearts with courage and faith, so that we too may publicly minister in his name; that we may be liberated from our insecurities and fear so that we can share the Gospel authoritatively and work to heal at least one wounded re-lationship in the coming months ahead.

Transformation Boot Camp for Families and Young AdultsThe OLPH Transformation team is proud to be hosting a series of “boot-camp" talks on issues facing parents of young people.

The Spiritual Lives of Adolescents and Young AdultsA couple of weeks ago, we presented a video featuring Fr. Patrick McGrath, S.J. The video presentation featured the compelling talk Fr. McGrath gave at the Parish Council’s Fall Summit. You may view the video on our parish website: olphglenview.org

Religion and ScienceJoin us on Sunday, March 4, at 4:00 p.m. in McDonnell Hall as Fr. John Kartje, President of Mundelein Seminary as well as an Astrophysicist, discusses the relationship between Religion and Science, a subject that is of interest to many of our young people.

These talks are open to all—youth, parents, grandparents. Other topics for this series are being developed and will be announced soon.

Please Make Your Gift to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal

“Come, Follow Me”Please spend some time this week refl ecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure available in Church. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments.

Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, Follow Me.”

After our parish goal of $129,195 is reached in cash, 100% of any addi-tional funds come back to our parish to help to fund our needs.

If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend.

Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

Youth Summer Job FairOn January 10, the OLPH Business Networking Ministry hosted the third annual Youth Summer Job Fair.

This year saw a record number of employers, vendors, and job seek-ers. Many job seekers - looking for their fi rst job - brought a parent or friend, adding to the energetic atmosphere. The event gave them an opportunity to participate in an informal venue and learn about poten-tial job opportunities and expectations.

With the job market tightening, employers are aggressively seeking ways to meet potential employees. If you were unable to attend, the ministry is in the process of publishing an electronic program of the event including participating employers' information and handouts. Expect it to be avaliable for download from the OLPH Youth Ministry page on our parish website after February 1.

Evolve Presentation - World Religions

Saturday, February 17, 9:30-11:15 am, McDonnell HallJoin the Evolve Ministry as we welcome Jerry Leitner for his presentation, Jesus In the World Religions: An Exploration of How Non-Christian Traditions View Jesus.

A growing understanding of truth sees truth as plural: no one viewpoint is suffi cient to explore any reality. So ...imagine a Jew, a Muslim, a Hindu, and a Buddhist seated around a table. Surprisingly, the topic is Jesus – a fi gure respected by each tradition, but in differing and illuminating ways. This presentation examines how four of the great religions understand Jesus of Nazareth and the insights they unveil both to those who see him as divine and those who see him as one of the world’s greatest teachers.
