School Colour Run Congratulations to all involved in the first running of the Colour Run at Peak Hill Central School. Primary and Secondary students had a fantastic time as seen in the photo special in this newsletter. This was a fantastic success with all students engaged, included and encouraged throughout by staff and parents. ANZAC Day Peak Hill Central School students are invited to attend ANZAC Day activities and the march from the school through town to the Peak Hill Ex-Services Club for a memorial service. Nanyaburra Program Dennis Moran has been coming to school for 3 weeks to run the Nanyaburra program that ties Aboriginal culture with sport, respect and goal setting. This program will continue through to the end of the year and culminate in a 3 day camp in Sydney. Police Youth Liaison visit Marty Paice from Dubbo Police came to school to provide workshops and information about safety for our students on Monday 8th April. Parkes PCYC staff will run approx 20 students through a morning fitness program using a variety of exercises, boxing movements and games and then deliver breakfast. Head Teachers’ News

Education is a shared responsibility, schools families

and community all play a vital role in educating our

students to grow and thrive in a 21st century society.

Parents and community contribute to the attitudes,

expectations and aspirations of our children. These

factors frequently determine the extent to which

students will engage in the learning opportunities that

are provided in the classroom setting.

Positive parent-school communication benefits

parents by developing a greater appreciation for the

role they play in their children’s education.

Students benefit by having a more positive attitude

about school. Teachers benefit by having regular

contact with parents and gaining a deeper

understanding about student needs which is

information they can apply towards better meeting

those needs.

Together, as a team, parents and teachers can create

the best possible environment to ensure the best

academic, social and emotional outcomes for our

children.

Western Region Rugby League Trials On Thursday 4th April Peak Hill hosted the Western School Sport Association Rugby League Trials. This event is hosted at Peak Hill every year in support of Western Sport. Students who were successful at the Eastern and Western Zone trials came together at Peak Hill to trial for selection in the 2019 Western U15s and U18s Team. Many of the Western Sport staff and spectators commented on how great Linder Oval was looking. Thanks to the council for their assistance in preparing the oval for the day. Congratulations to Malachi Dart who was selected in the U15s Western Team. Well done to our student helpers on the day, who were the touch judges, water runners and ball collectors. Finally a big thanks to Willy Barnes, who’s NRL expertise is a huge help in setting up and running the day. NAPLAN Practice Students in Year 7 and 9 have now completed their NAPLAN Practice Tests in preparation for NAPLAN 2019. The NAPLAN Practice Tests provide the students with the opportunity to use the testing platform so they are familiar with it prior to NAPLAN 2019. Students will sit four diagnostic tests in Term 2, beginning on the 14th of May. These tests will focus on Writing, Language Conventions, Reading and Numeracy. The tests provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. They also provide schools, states and territories with information about how education programs are working and which areas need to be prioritised for improvement. Colour Run On Friday 5th April all students were given the chance to participate in The Colour Run as an acknowledgement of their positive behaviour this term. The colour run was a huge success. Thank you to Miss Heraghty and Mrs Levick for their organisation of the afternoon – the students (and staff) had a great afternoon and for many students it was their first opportunity to participate in The Colour Run. Peak Hill Central School is participating in the 2019 Premier’s Reading Challenge. The challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read more. Students in K-2 will be undertaking the challenge in their class, with their teachers reading books from the PRC list and registering them. Students in 3-4 will have the option of reading books from the PRC list at home. However, they will also be supported by their teachers reading in class. Year 5-9 students will need to undertake the challenge individually by accessing PRC list books from the school library. Any interested students will be registered and given login details to record their reading progress (teachers are more than happy to assist). Details and booklists can be accessed at the following website:https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html If you have any questions please feel free to contact me through the school office. For the final two weeks of Term 1, we have been revising all four PBL expectations; Respectful, Responsible, Safe and Successful. During these weeks your child may have received a red, yellow, green or blue Russell. We have had an amazing start to PBL for the year at Peak Hill Central School. To celebrate the student’s success we held our colour run on Friday, 5th April. Students and staff took in turns to run through a variety of stations and have colour and water sprayed all over them. It was great to see so many parents come and share the enjoyment with the kids. A big thank you to Mrs Levick for all her organisation of the colour run! Also thank you to Tracey from Zumba for taking time out of her day to come and run both primary and secondary through a warm up and cool down. So much fun was had! Next term we hope to see all students return to school with the same positive attitude to behaviour and learning. We have yet another exciting surprise for students at the conclusion of term 2 to acknowledge their efforts. We can’t wait to share it with everyone next term, so watch this space.

Name: Sharntelle Schnitger. Name: Mundara Smith-Read. Favourite Sport: Soccer. Favourite Sport: Soccer. Favourite Subject: Art. Favourite Subject: Art. I like coming to school because: I get to learn. I like coming to school to: See my friends. On the weekend I like to: Play with my dog. On the weekend I like to: Go fishing.

Animals should not be kept in cages by Charlee Beeby Firstly, I think it is cruel to keep wild animals in cages because they have to be in their natural habitat. Secondly, animals shouldn’t be in cages because they need to stay with family and they’re not used to being locked up in cages. Thirdly, it is cruel because they don’t deserve to be locked up and they need to roam free where they live. In conclusion, I believe that it is not right to keep wild animals in cages.

Easter Bunny Wool Art This week stage 2 have had a focus on Easter. On Monday afternoon they made Easter Bunny Art using

different coloured wool. Check out some of the beautiful designs.

Animals should not be kept in cages by Michael Redpath My friends and I believe that it is cruel to keep animals in cages because what if it was a baby and it was in a cage with no family or friends. Firstly, it is cruel that animals are in cages because they need space and I think they should be treated like us. Secondly, animals are friendly if you don’t interrupt them. If you get a new pet let it fly around. Thirdly, animals shouldn’t be in cages, they need their own home and you might feed them the wrong food and they might die. In conclusion, I think animals shouldn’t be in cages because they need their own life and they need their own prey to catch. They need their own home that has more space and they should like it better than a cage. What if you were an animal and you were in a cage. What would you feel like? Would you feel like a flightless bird with no feathers?

Desert Survivors

Stage 3 this term in Science have been looking at the subject 'Desert Survivors'. We have been studying how animals and plants have adapted themselves so that they survive in the harsh environment of the desert. We have looked at how the male Peacock uses his feathers for camouflage from predators. They use their feathers to make it look like there is more than one of them. In art we made some pop up Peacocks to go along with our Science subject. Miss Georgia Stewart & Ms Michelle Ross Classroom Teachers

(Mandatory) This week in their unit, Year 8 have reviewed their recipe reading and measuring skills to produce a perfect batch of Anzac biscuits. The students understand the importance of making each biscuit a consistent size, to ensure even baking times. The results were brilliant, as seen by the fabulous Anzacs made by Regan. If you would like to make some of your own biscuits at home, please try our recipe, which is below. Happy baking! Mrs Catherine Doyle TAS Teacher
