Dear Parents & Carers,

Unfortunately I start with some sad news. Mrs Jacklin, will be leaving the school at the end of this half term, her last day will be Friday 25th May. Mrs Jacklin is taking early retirement for personal reasons; a decision that was very difficult for her to take.

Mrs Jacklin has been a teacher at OGPS since 2006 and over twelve years has taught across the school in number of different year groups. There are many children, families and members of staff who have benefited greatly from Mrs Jacklin’s support; she has made a great difference to so many and will be missed.

Parents with children in 6J received a separate letter to give them further details. 6J will be led by Mrs Dean, our Deputy Headteacher, alongside a new member of staff, Mrs Shewell, who will be coming to work with us for the final half term. She is an experienced class teacher as well experienced Assistant Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher. I am certain that the experience she brings will be of great benefit to 6J as well as the rest of the school.

Clubs, Clubs and MORE CLUBS!

In response to requests from children and parents, from the start of the summer term we launched some new clubs, particularly for our younger children. These have included three new cooking clubs, an extra Karate club day and a Lego club.

British Values - Pupil Voice in Action!

Our School Council took the theme of the Brent Local Election and created their own OGPS election. They demonstrated democracy in action by having four school issues on which they campaigned! See later in the newsletter for more!

Ramadan Mubarak

To those in our school and local community about to start the holy month of Ramadan we say “Ramadan Mubarak”. Do make sure you let us know if your child is fasting. Our prayer and reflection time will be open each day for children of all faiths and no faith to pray or simply sit and reflect on their day.

Best wishes,

Mr. James Simmons, Headteacher

Site Improvement at OGPS

Over the last three years we have been investing in improving our school site to make sure our children have the best learning environment we can afford! From the Easter break to date we have replaced the shelters in the playground as well as decorating the Y3/4 and Y5 stair wells. We have also upgraded the external lighting.

Summer Term School Uniform

It is great that the weather has at last improved and we are seeing more blue skies than grey!

Don’t forget that we do have a summer uniform to help the children to stay cool; they can wear a blue gingham summer dress or grey shorts.

www.olivergoldsmith.brent.sch.uk/pages/school-life/school-uniform

Also, please make sure children come to school with a bottle of water which they can then refill throughout the day to stay hydrated.

A cap or hat is great at protecting children from the sun!

Children should apply sun cream before coming to school in the morning.

Lastly, sunglasses are not permitted in school.

School Budget

Our Board of Governors are meeting on Weds 16th May to set the school’s budget. The money we receive in our budget is not increasing and our costs are rising at a very fast rate! Unless this situation changes in the future, the Board of Governors will have no choice but to make some cuts to our provision.

Last year, the school subsidised trips and events for children to a cost of £20,000. We simply do not have the money to do this anymore. It saddens me to say that unless we receive voluntary contributions from parents to cover the full cost of trips, they will need to be cancelled.

Maths Competition Week 2018 Each year we hold three times table weeks to encourage and motivate children to learn their timetables. The third week culminates in our Maths Competition Week! During this week, the children work hard to beat and set a new personal best as well as work together as a class to compete against their year team class for the title of “Times Table Champions 2018”. Our Maths Stars for the Week were chosen for either improved speed of recall or for improving their scores! They were Hady, Himesh, Shahidulaah, Parshva, Michael, Mohamad, Ameena, Saad, Masud, Ojas, Hikma, Aliyah, Hannah, Khaled, Adam, Zymul, Vethara, Sana, Tharahi, Jonah, Emis, Tiyana, Denis, Abdul-Kareem, Pia, Naiyah, Ghanage & Sara. A very special mention for our new record holder for answering sixty questions correctly! Ghanage in Y6 now holds the record at an AMAZING 53 seconds! Our Year Group Times Table Champions for 2018 were; 1B, 2AY, 3P, 4A, 5A & 6J Over the year we want to give all our children an opportunity for their skills to shine and our mathematicians stars did this during maths week! Here are our 100% correct winners from across the school...

Y5 Activity Days - Gordon Brown Residential 2018

Our year five pupils had a fantastic time on their residential trip to Gordon Brown and are writing some reports for our next newsletter. They enjoyed many outdoor activities, looking after the animals as well as the mud! Our residential trips make lasting memories for our children and we give our thanks to the members of staff who enabled the trip to take place, Mrs Dean, Mrs Luke, Mr Crawford and Mr Ennis. We also say thank you to Mrs O’Connell and Mrs Babhania in the office; it wouldn't happen without them!

We also say thank you to Mrs McGrath who looked after the children in Y5 who had their activity days back at OGPS. They had a brilliant survival day with tents, fire making and pop-corn thanks to Mrs Speller. They have also created a brilliant OGPS mosaic to mark our 80th celebration!

Egg-citing times in Nursery - They Hatched!

Our children in nursery learned about life cycles by having an incubator! They patiently waited and were rewarded with seeing chicks hatching from their eggs! Here are some of their comments about what they saw...

“It's going to crack! we watched it from our television Its going to be a chicken! We love the chicks, they have lots of food to eat and they drink water. They come from a bowl of eggs. I like to touch the chick, they are so soft but after Miss ask us to wash hour

hands.” Elisei

“Eggs, its cracking! it's got chicken inside it. Its yellow, small, yellow. We have 11 eggs. they came out of the eggs and they were

sleepy”. Nelson

“Chick was hatching. He was knocking, he came out.” Ali

“It hatched and the chick came out and his brothers and sisters they were so tired! It was wet and now its is all dry. It was yellow and wet and soft. the chick are gonna grow up and do their own

eggs and they fly!” Sana

“Baby chicks are in the elevator (incubator) then they started to hatch. They came out the incubator and we put them in the green box. There's food, water and a thing they dodo on, that pastry thing (woodchip). There is a light to keep them warm. I wish the baby

chicks would turn into cockerels.” Immanuel

School Council - Democracy in Action

To coincide with the local elections, our school council ran their own election. They came up with four school issues that they wanted the rest of the school to vote on. They wanted to find out which one was the most popular so that they could make the school a better place!

The four chosen issues were;

More playground equipment for basketball and hockey!

A School Radio Station!

Better stationery in school - to bring in their own colourful equipment!

New toilets for everyone!

All the children had the chance to vote for their favourite idea! Each child was issued with a ballot paper and our oldest children used the polling booths from the Brent Local Election to make it as realistic as possible…

And the winner is….. Going to be announced this Friday!!!!!!!!

Book Day at OGPS

The snow may have stopped us back in March but the weather didn't spoil our Book Day last Friday. There were some spectacular costumes from children and staff! Thank you parents for helping to prepare such amazing outfits!

As part of the day, each child visited out special book fair. Each child was able to choose a book to take home as a gift from the school as part of our 80th celebrations. We hope the children will treasure the books as a reminder of this special time!

PARKING: PARENTS ARE PUTTING THE LIVES OF OUR CHILDREN AT RISK

In the last three weeks I have had three very angry residents complaining about parents block-ing access to their homes. Our local neighbours should NOT need to ask someone to move their car so they can get out of or gain access to their own property.

We still have parents who are IGNORING the yellow lines outside the school gates on both sides of the road. The signs clearly states NO STOPPING OR PARKING BETWEEN 8.15am-9.15am and 2.30-4.30pm. It is unacceptable to STOP or PARK on these lines as this is the main area our children cross the road before and after school. By stopping or parking on these lines you are PUTTING LIVES AT RISK! We also have parents parking in Holy Inno-cent’s car park area on Kingsbury Road when they should not be.

Please Note: Where changes to events need to be made, we will update parents via the newsletter and calendar on the school website. We try our very best to stick to the dates we set but sometimes changes are unavoidable.
