Old Sodbury Times November 2017
Welcome to the Wood Family who recently moved into Fattinghouse Farm in Mill Lane—Chris , Alison and daughters Sophie , Katie and Emma . Alison writes:
‘We moved to Old Sodbury from Downend as we've always loved Chipping Sodbury and the country way of life .
Chris is a carpenter/ builder working in the local area and I can now fulfill my dream and love of horses . ‘
Chipping Sodbury to expand?
Congratulations to the cyclists on the CHESTER TO OLD SODBURY BIKE RIDE—We are pleased to say that the total amount raised was £3,343.82. The charities that benefited were £1796.91 to Macmillan Cancer Support, £1,446.91 to Old Sodbury Village Hall, and due to an administration error £100.00 to the Marie Curie Foundation. Rodney has since received a letter of thanks from Macmillan Cancer Support. A big thanks to all the riders that took part and especially to everyone who donated so generously.
With the help of the Gruffalo and Sodbury Town Council,
Chipping Sodbury Library has now
been relaunched as a Community Library run by 45 volunteers. It continues to offer the same services and is open all day on Wednesday when Yate Library is shut.
A lot of effort went into persuading South Glos Council not to close the library so please come in and use it so that we can prove to them that they made the right decision. The large team of volunteers are more than happy to give their time to keep the library open and look forward to helping people get the most out of it. At the moment they are still finding their feet so please be patient with them.
The opening hours are Tuesday 09.30 - 12.30 and 13.30 to 16.30; Wednesday 09.30 to 18.30; Friday 09.30 to 12.30 and Saturday 09.30 to 12.30. Julia Bernau
Village Day 2018
Following the success of the last two
Village Days which have been held in
the Football Field taking advantage of
the Football Club facilities, we are
starting to plan for June next year. A
preliminary meeting is scheduled for
Tuesday 21 November at 8pm in the
Village Hall. Anyone who would like to
be involved or who has any ideas for
activities for the day is very welcome to
attend. To help in judging numbers for
that meeting it would assist if you could
let us know that you are attending with
an email to [email protected]. We
look forward to seeing you.
The West of England Partnership (the old Avon area) is thought to be recommend-ing that up to an extra 1,000 homes are built on the edge of Chipping Sodbury. A suggestion that they go east of the town in the Parks Farm area is downgraded because it is prone to flooding and was an old Mediaeval Deer Park.
Instead they suggest expansion south of the town towards Kingrove Common and in mid October South Gloucestershire Council held an exhibition explaining the process and seeking residents thoughts on possible development. This is all ahead of any consultation on actual planned development, it was simply to gauge peoples’ views and ask about possible problems. Wherever it goes, it seems we are due for more expansion.
In June, surveys of the water quality of the River Frome were carried out by volunteers of the Bristol Avon River Watch. It is pleasing to be able to report that Nitrate and Phosphate Levels at 5 sites in the Sodbury Parish were low . So well done to our local farmers and landowners.
Thanks also to all those who worked on sprucing up the Village Hall and all those who support the village groups and keep Old Sodbury functioning as a community.

Report on a Murder What an entertaining and enjoyable evening! We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, not just the entertain-ment but with old and new folks at our table. The school lunch was well received and brought back memories of our youth!
The ‘Police Constable’ was superb at his job in enlightening us with the facts available to solve the crime, He did such a good job that perhaps he will be a Sergeant by next year (or even be in the C.I.D). The Headmistress did a stern but good job keeping us on our toes and the ‘Prefects’ did their tasks very efficiently. The Cooks excelled themselves in their smaller than usual kitchen and the pupils appreciated their hard work.
All told it was a well organised event and enjoyed by all who attended, although after the food and permitted alcohol, it was a struggle to sort out the clues and arrive at the solution! - But the culprit was found out and now resides in one of Her Majesty’s hotels. Well done and thanks to all. Jill and Phil Rumney
800 Years Old Next year on 11th and 12th August ‘the Chipping of Sodbury ‘ will be 800 years old. The
Town Council and all the Groups in the area are planning a Grand Celebration for everyone. As it all started
in what is now Old Sodbury we would like to hear from anyone who has a history of their home or its sur-
roundings. We are trying to build up a picture of what has happened in the area over the last 800 years. If you
have any information small or large Please contact Phil Rumney 01454 318523

REINACTMENTS OF MEDIAEVAL FAIR AND MARKET
Glasses were raised and wines were sampled at the September
meeting. It was a very jolly evening to which Angela Barber
welcomed members and visitors. After reports of our second
place at Hawkesbury Show, the successful raising of funds towards Denman College and other news
the serious business of wine tasting began! Ollie and Anthony came from Waitrose to introduce us to
a Prosecco, and white and red wines so that we could sample their aromas and flavours.
Vintage accessories were given an airing at our October meeting. Past member Juliette entertained
us well with demonstrations of 1940’s fashions. She was assisted by four enthusiastic friends who
paraded in army, navy, home-guard and women’s land army uniforms. We heard about food
rationing and clothing coupons, utility wear, make-do and mend. Amongst the many items there
were coats made from blankets and underclothes made from parachute silk. This was a most
enjoyable and memorable evening for our members and visitors.
The Book club are reading literature of a different genre this month, “Snowdon” The biography by
Anne de Courcy.
Our AGM will be held on Wednesday 15th November and after the various reports and elections
members will be able to use their creative flair to make something for Christmas! We look forward
to our Festive Party in December when we will have a Supper and Entertainment with our guests.

1st Team The team are finding the start of the season tough, due to so
many players out with long term injuries. However by the end of October
they have only played 4 games in the league, winning one and losing three.
Two of the matches were night games, one of which they won 2-0 against
Longwell Green.
The Premier Cup saw the boys lose against Manor Farm. On 30th October
the team are at home against Totterdown in the G.F.A. Cup Round 2.
The Reserves have played 8 games winning one, drawing 2 and losing 5.
The win was against Dodington 3-0. In the local derby against Chipping
Sodbury the lads lost 3-1 in a good game. The 2 draws were both 2-2 and we
should have won both of these. On 21st October the team came up against a
good Lawrence Rovers side and went down 9-2 in wet and windy weather.
The score would have looked better if chances were taken. On 6th November
the reserves are away against Iron Acton in the G.F.A. Cup Round 2.

A Spruced Up Village Hall
Back at the beginning of this year, the Village Hall
Committee started looking at some decoration work to
brighten up the tired wooden panelling on a couple of the
walls. Inevitably once you start looking at decoration, you do
one thing and it makes everything else look grubby. So the
project has grown and grown, to the point where not only the
inside, but also the outside has been cleaned and painted and
it’s all looking splendid. The rest of the Committee would like
to thank Anne Myers for being the driving force behind this
project, though Dave Mason and Rodney Gleed were also
significant contributors. We are very proud of how the hall is
looking and hope that you will be able to visit to see for your-
selves in the near future.
A couple of dates for your diary in the New Year are the
Village Quiz on Saturday 10 February and the Comedy Night
on Saturday 21 April. Details and tickets will be available
early in the New Year.
