A long history of transport
History of an Asian crossroads
Perfectly positioned between mainland Japan, China, Korea, and the countries of Southeast Asia, the Ryukyu Kingdom was a bustling maritime state linking these nations to one another across vast expanses of sea, fostering commerce and international trade. As a result, the Ryukyu Islands fostered a lively exchange of culture, transmitting important aspects of civilization throughout the region. Uniquely Ryukyuan and Okinawan cultural products soon arose, including Bingata dying and other crafts, distinctive pork dishes and other fusion cuisine, and enduring styles of martial arts. Thanks to their geographical advantages, the Okinawan people continued to absorb and integrate various aspects of the different civilizations that surrounded them, becoming prosperous through transnational commerce and trade as they developed their own exceptional values and practices. This spirit of diversity and global connection still lies at the heart of Okinawan culture today.

■ Ryukyuan lacquerwareLacquerware techniques came to Okinawa from China in the 14th century. They developed their own unique character among the Ryukyuan people, who then began exporting them abroad.
■ SanshinSanshin first came to Okinawa from China between the 14th and 15th centuries. These Okinawan stringed instruments later became the prototype for the shamisen on the Japanese mainland, and represent a fusion of Okinawan, Chinese, and other Asian cultural influences.
A 21st-century Bridge of Nations
Linking Japan with the rest of AsiaSince ancient times, Okinawa has been a center of commerce and intermediate trade for the countries of Asia, flourishing as the hub of a vast international network of commercial activity. Now, with Asia’s economic boom in full swing, Okinawa’s geographical and logistic advantages have once again taken center stage. In today’s modern era, Okinawa is now setting its sights on becoming a 21st-century Bridge of Nations, having long expanded its horizons from the seas to the skies and still ideally positioned in the heart of Asia. Our island is perfectly equipped to not only drive its own development and that of Japan, but also to lead the entire region into an even brighter economic future.
■ Bridge of Nations bell (casted and hung in Shuri Castle during the 15th century)
■ AwamoriAwamori is a distilled spirit made from Thai rice. It is said to have developed under the influence of Thailand and Fujian, China. Awamori was first exported towards the end of the 16th century as a gift to the shogunate and heads of the Satsuma Clan, as a tribute to the Chinese court, and more.
