THE OKLAHOMA CITY TENNIS CENTER at Will Rogers Park is one of the largest municipal tennis centers in the United States. In 2016 they completed the second phase of an expansion which brought them to a total of 36 courts – including six indoor courts, located inside a fabric structure by Legacy Building Solutions.

“You can play year-round,” Oklahoma City Tennis Center director of facilities Steve Henry said of the indoor facility. “It’s obviously a help in the wintertime when it’s cold. It also enables you to play when it’s extremely windy or extremely hot, or when it rains in the spring or in the summer. Your programming doesn’t come to a halt due to weather now.” After the expansion, the center is used by about 100 visitors daily, and hosts more than 60 annual events, including tournaments, private lessons, youth lessons and adult leagues.

With players ready to use the new indoor tennis center and tournaments on the calendar, speed of construction was vital. Legacy’s crews traveled to Oklahoma City for installation, which was completed in less than 30 days. “It was a priority to get the new building operating quickly, so we could continue our programming,” said Henry.

Another priority for the phase two expansion plan was a building optimized for tennis, which will attract new players and events. The building measures 125’ x 300’, and the interior is designed to meet USTA standards for ideal sidewall and peak height. The expanded building includes six standard courts as well as additional space for spectators and equipment. Divider curtains were added to the building frame to protect players from objects flying off other courts.

A state-of-the-art LED lighting system is also hung from the steel frames. Along with the white PE fabric interior liner, the system provides even, glare-free lighting on all six courts – a necessary feature lacking in many interior gyms. In addition to magnifying the light, the interior liner serves to muffle squeaks and sounds in the gym, allowing players and coaches to focus on the game and communicate with each other more easily.

Climate control is another vital feature for indoor sports centers. The OKC Tennis Center features R-30 insulation in the roof, R-19 insulation in the walls,

circulation fans and a climate-control system for year-round use. The steel frame of the structure was custom engineered to withstand 10 psf snow load and 90 mph windspeeds, which will allow players to continue the game no matter the weather conditions. To manage storm-water runoff and protect the area around the foundation of the structure, Legacy added a three-foot overhang, gutters and downspouts to the roof.

The OKC Tennis Center has been well received by the tennis community. In 2016, it was named Municipal Tennis Facility of the Year by Tennis Industry magazine, and 2016 USTA Outstanding Facility in the Large Facility Category.

As a municipal court, the OKC Tennis Center is dedicated to making tennis fun and accessible for everyone in the community. The indoor facility, part of a $4 million expansion, was designed in part to attract more people, particularly young people, to the sport. “We’re in hopes that we can attract more junior players who maybe couldn’t afford a country club, said Henry. “They can come here and play.”
