Innovative solutions

Offshore Gas CondensateField DevelopmentDuring the FEED, a conceptual studywas undertaken to improve theunderstanding of the duty envelopeof the slug catcher and establisha suitable configuration andoperating strategy.

This field in the Middle East isintended to export wellstream fluid to a single onshore slug catcherthrough multiple parallel multiphase trunklines.

A novel solution was developed tohandle large volumes of aqueousphase delivered after protractedtrunkline operation in a stratifiedflow regime.

Oilfield Conceptual DesignDuring a study for one of the largestmajor new oilfields in the MiddleEast, we were able rapidly todevelop new schemes for eachbuilding block of the development.Using our concept design screeningprocess, we provided cost estimates to meet the client’sdemanding schedule.

The final robust and cost-effectiveconceptual design ultimately becamethe basis for a buy-back contractwith the state oil company.

Gas PipelineThe conceptual study carefullyevaluated the line sizing andoperating condition options to avoidunwanted phase changes andresulting operational instability. Thefacility is intended to receive ethanefeedstock by pipeline with anambient temperature almost exactlyat the critical temperature of thefeedstock gas.

Methanol Recovery forShell’s Malampaya OnshoreGas PlantA value engineering exercise wasundertaken on the project prior todetailed engineering to identify areasfor project cost savings. It wasestablished that removing themethanol within the amine unit ratherthan by washing upstream provideda significant cost saving.

Other cost-saving ideasimplemented included simplifying the utility systems for the heat andpower supply, optimizing the design,equipment selection, procurementprocesses, contracting andconstruction methods. The projectwas completed under budget, withfirst gas ahead of schedule.

LNG Vaporizer HeatIntegration & EmissionsEliminationBy using waste heat from a nearbypower plant, we developed aninnovative solution (patent pending)to reduce emissions from the LNGvaporizers, and improve the overallLNG receiving terminal and plantfacility thermal efficiency. Our designeliminated fuel requirements andpresented significant environmentaladvantages over traditional openrack and submerged combustiontype vaporizers.

Integrated Gas Plant GTL Barge, West AfricaWe realized potential additionalrevenue stream of $20m/yr for acapex of less than $25m byoptimizing the balance of utilitiesand offsites. These specificimprovements (patent granted) weremade to the tail gas managementsystem by identifying low capitalcost which increased the net liquidproduction by nearly 10%.

Sasol GTLWe have been working with Sasol on its GTL process since 1995 and we are its single point licensor.

We have helped Sasol enhanceplant performance, drive costs downand have carried out pre-feasibility,feasibility studies and FEEDs.

We engineered the ORYX GTLproject in Qatar, the first of the newgeneration of GTL plants, and areworking as part of the projectmanagement team during the EPC phase.

Fuel and Tail GasManagementFor unreacted syngas, lighthydrocarbons and CO2, we haveassessed their use as a stableheating resource and developedsolutions for hydrocarbon andhydrogen recovery, recyclinghydrogen and CO2, and using CO2 for syngas ratio adjustment.

Creativityin action

Meeting C2 & C3 ContentFoster Wheeler has developed aviable solution (patent pending) tothe issue of existing LNG baseloadplants producing LNG with C2 andC3 content unsuitable to service theUSA market. Our design reduces C2and C3 from the send out gas, atthe LNG receiving terminal sites.

By using low temperature LNG as acooling medium for the columnoverhead, economic separation isachieved. This requires no gascompression because LNG is usedas a refrigerant in a direct-contactcondenser, which condensesenriched C1 vapor to produce alean LNG for liquid pumping.

GASCO OGD-III & AGD-II,Abu DhabiProject management consultant,managing and technically evaluatingthe FEED bidders, making FEEDaward recommendations andsubsequently managing FEEDexecution. The developmentincluded a gas gathering andinjection pipeline and manifoldsystem, two new trains of gas,expansion of the NGL fractionationplant, and additional condensatestorage and handling at the refinery.We are now PMC for the EPC phase of OGD-III.
