Staying up-to-date with current trends and topics is a key element for businesses to maintain success in today's economic environment. At the Ohio
Minority Supplier Development Council, we understand that longer
publications can sometimes become taxing for readers.
That's why we're proud to be launching a quarterly edition of our annual
Connections publication. Connections Quarterly aims to provide the same
Corporate Features, MBE Success Stories and individual profiles, with a focus
on more recent topics, trends and events.
This inaugural issue is sure to please. Our Corporate Feature on Honda
provides an inside glimpse into how the company balances bringing on new
diverse suppliers while maintaining long-term relationships with established
partners. Along with two MBE features on Cybervation and E.E. Ward Moving
& Storage, this issue of Connections Quarterly offers information on
upcoming statewide and local events for Corporate Members and MBEs.
I thank you for taking the time to read our publication. None of this would
be possible without the outstanding support and collaboration of our team of
OMSDC staff and Corporate and MBE contributors.

MBDA OUTLINESPRESIDENT'S BUDGET
GOVERNMENT NEWS
Recent Census Bureau data show that the number
of minority-owned businesses continues to grow at a
fast pace, but these companies continue to lag other
businesses in revenues and employment. The
President’s FY 2017 budget proposal requests $35.6
million for MBDA to expand its services and
assistance to the nation’s eight million minority
businesses. This represents an increase of $3.6
million over FY 2016 appropriations.
MBDA currently funds a national network of
minority business centers in 29 states, the District of
Columbia and Puerto Rico that provide a variety of
services to minority-owned firms, including business
consulting, procurement matching, and private
equity and venture capital sourcing.
Additional funding in the FY 2017 budget would
build MBDA’s capacity to work with young
entrepreneurs and conduct research that will enable
government, business, and community leaders to
make policy, programmatic and business decisions
based on accurate and current information.
Specifically, the President’s FY 2017 budget includes
program increases for MBDA’s Business Innovation
for Young Entrepreneurs program to provide federal
grants in regions of the U.S. with high
concentrations of minorities, high youth population
and high minority unemployment rates in order to
engage, educate, and build capacity among young
minority entrepreneurs.
The budget proposal would also fund three research
projects, one to explore the latest data on the
characteristics of Minority Business Enterprises, a
second to develop a national inventory of Minority
Business Enterprise disparity studies, and a third to
create a national inventory of procurement laws
impacting Minority-owned Enterprises.
The U.S. Department of Commerce, Minority
Business Development Agency (MBDA),
outlined the 2017 fiscal year budget proposal
by President Barack Obama. MBDA says that
it would support of the growing number of
minority-owned businesses in the United
States. According to MBDA, the budget would
enable them to continue to offer valuable
programs and services to minority businesses
and support a coordinated approach to
engage, educate, and build capacity among
minority entrepreneurs.

As an IT customer sourcing manager for Honda’s North American purchasing team, Cathy Osborne takes pride in making sure Honda customers get what they want. In fact, if asked, Osborne will tell you that making sure customer needs are met is her highest priority.
And, this is no easy task for someone in Osborne’s line of work, especially with a diverse Honda supplier network that includes
companies providing parts and services for automobiles, motorcycles, power sports and power equipment products.
“Whether it’s an auto, motorcycle or a lawnmower, ensuring the right part gets to the right place at the right time is critical to our company’s success,” Osborne said. “Our supplier partners provide the high-quality parts and services that directly contribute to Honda’s final products and, in short, to our ability to meet and exceed customer expectations.”
In North America, Honda has more than 600 suppliers that provide a record $26.3 billion worth of parts for the more than 1.8 million Honda and Acura passenger vehicles Honda produced last year in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
With 25 years of experience at Hon-da, Osborne has become quite skilled at creating strong relationships with business partners that reflect the diversity of Honda products, as well as the diversity of Honda customers. Evidence of this is the recent honor she earned from the Ohio Minority Supplier Development Council (OMSDC) as their buyer of the year.
Nominated by an IT supplier she has worked closely with for several years, Osborne said the acknowledgement came as a total surprise to her.
“I was humbled that a long-time supplier thought enough of our relationship and the work we have accomplished together at Honda to recognize our company,” Osborne said of the nomination from Unicon International, an IT consulting company based in Columbus, Ohio. “I didn’t set out to win an award. I was doing my job. So, to be continued on page 14
CONNECTIONS QUARTERLY | 14 www.OhioMSDC.org
continued from page 13nominated for a job I love, and then to win buyer of the year is like winning the Powerball jackpot to me.”
Making the honor even more significant is the fact this is the first time Honda has been nominated for OMDSC’s top individual purchasing award. Unicon International is a Woman Business Enterprise (WBE) and a Minority Business Enterprise (MBE), an area where Honda has made significant strides in recent years.
The commitment to invest in minority and women-owned businesses is essential to Honda’s success and continues to grow each year. In fact, last year Honda spent approximately $2 billion with MBEs, illustrating a dedication to developing and growing this important supply base.
A strong supplier base is a diverse supplier base, said Tom Lake, vice president of Honda North
American Purchasing.
“At Honda, we want to create strong relation-ships with our customers, our business partners and the communities where we live and work,” said Lake. “In order to accomplish this, we need strong relationships with suppliers that reflect the overall diversity of our customers and society.”
When Honda came to America in 1959 it was the very first company that Honda had established outside of Japan.
“It is fair to say that Honda had no idea of the complexity of diversity in North America,” Lake said. “Today, Honda is part of many communities in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. And, it is our responsibility to serve as a positive force to promote diversity throughout our business.”
Identifying new and diverse IT suppliers who can be an asset to Honda has been relatively
www.OhioMSDC.org CONNECTIONS QUARTERLY | 15
easy, according to Osborne. However, she added, suppliers must realize Honda is in a competitive industry and they must maintain an edge.
“The challenge starts when you consider the value of your current supply base, and how to introduce new suppliers into the environment,” she said.
“Honda values long-term, strong-performing sup-pliers. However, it is important to establish new suppliers, new ideas and different perspectives into our business. Competition is crucial, bal-anced with customer satisfaction and supplier stability. It’s a balance that must be maintained.”
However, the intrinsic benefit of Osborne’s work and with MBE’s ensures Honda products continue to meet customer demands.
“Our customers are changing all the time,” Osborne said. “Our designs and product offerings must support the needs of our customers and those needs are ever changing and evolving.”
Honda is also fortunate to have bench depth in its supplier base. Companies are vetted through a rigorous process to find the organizations that have the same dedication to customer satisfaction.
Supplier base data, sales data, number of employees, years in business – all of this must be analyzed, Osborne said. Then company competencies must be evaluated and matched to internal business needs and current supply base gaps, she added, all taking a great deal of time and effort for suppliers and Honda.
But the end result, Osborne said, is worth it when you assemble a team that produces products that bring joy to Honda customers.
“Honda believes in innovation and we want innovative suppliers and business partners that can help make us and our products better,” Osborne said. “Yes, we want it all, but so do the customers that buy our products.”

Tell us about yourself. Where did you go to school? Where did you grow up?
I was born and raised on the east side of Columbus. I enjoy spending time with family and watching various sports. I also enjoy going out to play golfing and bowling. I went Capital
University where I played football for four years. I graduated in 1992 with a degree in accounting.
How long have you been with the council?
I’ve joined Ohio MSDC three years ago.
What is your current role? How long have you been in your current role? How does your role support the mission and vision of the council?
I am the Director of Finance and Human Resources. I’ve been in this role since I was hired 3 years ago. In my current position I keep the council running through supporting the staff and tracking the finances.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy the people I work with. I enjoy the work. I like working with numbers and accounting. I like being about to able to actually use my degree every day. I
also enjoy seeing our constituents at our events. It’s nice to see that they support the Council and our mission.
What is the greatest benefit of working for the council?
Being able to network with corporations and MBEs from around the state. Meeting and working with the diverse communities the Council serves.
Where do you see OMSDC in the next few years?
I see the council growing in regards to corporate membership and MBEs and continuing to foster good relationship between the two.
What advice would you give to a new corporate member or MBE?
For a new corporation I would advise the Corporation to use the council to grow the Diversity in their business. For MBE’s I would advise the new MBE use the Council as well, to grow their business in their pursuit to work with the Councils Local Corporate Members.
“I...enjoy seeing our constituents at our events. It’s nice to see that they support the Council and our mission.”
