Open Gates A publication of the Gates Cactus & Succulent Society May 2020 From Our President: Dear Covid‐19, Thank you for allowing me to have so much more free time at home during this last six to eight weeks. I can’t remember when was the last time I got to spend more than two consecutive days doing gardening with my succulents. This has been a dream long overdue. It seems that the more time I have with the plants, the more I realize how much more work needs to be done with them. I’ve been digging the weeds, propagating the cuttings and overgrowths, waiting for the seeds to germinate, landscaping some of the garden, and just planting more succulents. Luckily, no significant plants were lost due to the abundance of rainfall soaking everything during March and the first half off April. Just imagine being confined in a small apartment or not having an outdoor yard/garden to enjoy some outdoor activity while staying home. Thank you covid‐19 for helping me realize the common, everyday essentials of daily life that I take for granted are actually in high demand and short supply at the stores. Who would have thought I had to wear a mask at any other time besides Halloween or engaging in some criminal act? The cow is dry on milk, the chicken can only lay so many egg, the lumber mill is closed‐meaning no wood chips to make paper product, the brewery has stopped making my booze so that they can make sanitizers which I still can’t find in the store or online (unless you’re on the waiting list for delivery). Heck, everyone should have been preparing their emergency supplies already since we live in this earthquake‐prone geography. I’m sure there’s a moral to all of this… Thank you covid‐19 for forcing the cancellation of all of the annual cactus and succulent shows and sales planned through the end of June. Yeah, that means the big annual CSSA show and sale is officially cancelled. Organizers of the bigger Inter‐City show and sale are grappling to make a final decision soon with that event. The monthly affiliate club meetings are soundly cancelled (through June) until further noticed. The reality of what events are left for the summer and the rest of the calendar year, as you can probably guess, is to be determined. Virtual meetings are becoming desirable and plausible options for temporary future meetings. What are your thoughts? Let me know. PS‐ continue to be safe and well. Thanks for the cheaper gas price. Now I have to figure out where I can go driving and visit… President 909-910-9195 Phuc Huynh Director 951-897-2220 Karen Roholt Vice President 760-881-0184 Trisha Davis Director 909-987-5706 Ann Reynolds Past President 909-783-2477 Don McGrew Director 909-882-6013 Sande Martin Treasurer 909-633-6934 Jo Ann Crabtree Director 909-935-7490 John Reynolds Secretary 909-645-0662 Gil Gilberto Librarian 951-682-3795 Karen Fleisher Editor 760-881-0184 Trisha Davis Greeter 951-781-8205 Teresa Wassman Sales Chair 909-987-5706 Ann Reynolds Cactus Rescue 330-986-6313 Jeffery Loew Program chair 661-406-9816 Woody Minnich Leadership Team 2020 Plants of the Month Cactus – Best Staged Cacti Succulent – Best Staged Succulent Next Month Cactus – Photograph Succulent – Photograph NEXT MEETING, WEDNESDAY ,No May 6 th 2020 Meeting AT THE REDLANDS CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE 1307 E CITRUS AVE, IN REDLANDS, CA
