Brazil repeats as Girls’ Youth champion

Brazil defended the FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship it won in Macau four years ago with a solid 3-1 (25-20, 26-24, 23-25, 25-16) victory over Ser-bia in a tense final on July 12. In the bronze-medal match, Belgium defeat-ed Turkey in an exciting five setter that saw them battle back from two sets down 3-2 (20-25, 24-26, 25-19, 28-26, 15-7) to medal for the first time ever at a Volleyball World Championship.

victors to a tiebreak, finally succumbing 3-2 (22-25, 25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 15-12) in 2 hours and 4 minutes.

“I’m so happy for this win,” said Brazilian captain Giba. “This was a match with so many emotions. It’s amazing to play a fi-nal in an arena with so many people. This victory is so important for this new gen-eration. We will enjoy this victory, but we will be ready for the next competitions.”Vissotto Neves scored a game-high 29 points, including 24 spikes, for Brazil, while Ivan Miljkovic, who finished the competition as Best Scorer, led the Serbi-ans with 28, including 25 spikes.

Russia went home with the bronze medal when Cuba collapsed in the play-off for third place. The European giants needed only 66 minutes to dispose of Cuba 3-0 (25-13, 26-24, 25-16) in a business-like display.

Only one of the tournaments was on the men’s side, as many of the top teams were involved in the 2009 FIVB World League tournament. In Finland, Rus-sia and Germany became the first two teams to qualify for the Final Round in Italy, joining the hosts and defending champions Brazil, who received byes.

On the women’s side, China and runner-up Thailand earned berths to the Final Round in Asian Pool D. Kenya became the first African team to

Germans make history in busy month following WorldsIt’s been a busy month for Beach Volley-ball players following the SWATCH FIVB World Championships in Norway that ended on July 4.

The teams got right back at it from July 6-12 in Gstaad, Switzerland at the 1 to 1 energy Grand Slam, and followed that up with tournaments in Russia, France, Aus-tria and Poland.

GSTAADIn Gstaad, Julius Brink and Jonas Recker-mann became the first team from Ger-many to win back-to-back SWATCH FIVB World Tour events when they defeated legendary Brazilians Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos for the gold medal. The 21-15, 17-21, 15-11 win in 60 minutes over third-seeded Rego and Santos vali-dated Brink and Reckermann’s gold medal success at the 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Championships in Stavanger, where the Germans claimed their first-ever SWATCH FIVB World Tour title together. The wins helped the Germans climb to No. 1 in the world rankings. On the women’s side, Brazil’s Talita An-tunes and Maria Antonelli scored a 21-17, 16-21, 15-12 win in 58 minutes over third-seeded Brazilian rivals Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca to capture their third international gold medal. from July 14-19, putting their names in the men’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour record book by winning their third-straight in-ternational Beach Volleyball gold medal. They tied the mark for most consecutive match wins by once again defeating Rego and Santos (24-26, 21-18,16-14) in the fi-nals of the US$600,000 Grand Slam Mos-cow 2009 presented by SEAT.Silva and Franca made up for their loss in the Gstaad final by beating compa-triots Renata Ribeiro and Vanilda Leao 21-18, 21-19 for gold in Moscow. Silva and Franca maintained their perfect record in Russia, having won all four tournaments they’ve played in the country, including the 2005, 2006 and 2007 titles won in St. Petersburg.

MARSEILLEFrom July 20-26, the SWATCH FIVB World Tour settled down in France, where the single-elimination format suited two pairs from the United States very well in-deed. Reigning Olympic champions Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers duplicated the efforts of compatriots Jen Kessy and April Ross in capturing the men’s and women’s gold medals at the US$600,000 World Series 13 Grand Chelem.Kessy and Ross defeated Vassiliki Arvan-iti and Maria Tsiartsiani of Greece 21-16, 21-17 in the 42-minute women’s finale on the Plages Gaston Defferre centre court, before fourth-seeded Dalhausser

Roseto stop cancelled The FIVB announced with regret in July the cancel-lation of the Roseto de-gli Abruzzi stop of the SWATCH FIVB World Tour, scheduled for Septem-ber 1-6. The decision was a result of an exclusivity conflict between promo-ters of the event and the World Tour stop in Rome. The Roseto stop was to be the last stage of the World Tour in Europe before the final two events in United Arab Emirates and China.

club World cup to incorporate Golden formulaThe FIVB and Qatari organizers have agreed to apply the Golden Formula rule at the FIVB Men’s Club World Volleyball Championship, which is re-turning to the international circuit after a 17-year-hiatus this November 3-8 in Doha, Qatar. The Golden Formula playing system requires that the first attack for each team begin from the back row in an attempt to produce longer rallies. While it will be the first time for the FIVB to adopt the rule, it will be business as usual for Qatar, who-se national competitions have incorporated the Golden Formula to great success in recent years. The Club World Championship will feature eight of the world’s best Volleyball clubs: Italy’s Trentino Volley, Egypt’s Zamalek, Iran’s Payakan, Qatar’s Al Arabi Doha, Poland’s PGE Skra Belchatow, Russia’s Dinamo Kazan, Puerto Rico’s Corozal and the team from CSV to be determined at a later date.
