On ~ovembe•· 13th, the t roopship passed Cape Verde Islands without stopping. Three days later, they sighted the S.S. ''Bangltara" of the Shaw, Sabill, Albian Line, en route from New Zealand to London. Both ships halted and exchanged newspapers and two large pillow slips of mall from the troops. Thus, the first Acllve Service Mail or the Canadian Contingent was dispatched.

There weren't any stamps available fo•· affixing to letters so none were applied; letters addressed to Ca:nada being f•·ee of postage, but those to the United States were taxed Postage Due. Pi{J . 10 Illustr-ates the fron t and back .of such a cover to the United States, showing the Postage Due marking. The letter is from R. C. B (a!!h) of Coy. E. or the Royal Canadians (Seep. 26)

    Gooda le Co llection.

Fiy. 11 is a reproduction of a souvenir Patriotic cover prepared by Capt. Ecelstone and Private Johnston of the Canadian Postal Corps. The earliest recorded use of the Canadian Postal Corps Orderly Room Stamp or postma•·k was April 3, 1900, (see Fig. 1£), and the latest in December 1900. This marking was applied to all mail passing through the Postal Corps base office and is always a later dale than the Field Post Office cancella-Uoo. •

    Editor·, BN.I 1.'0PTCS Dear Sir:

    ·:· --- ·:·

I am enclosing herewith my application for mem bership in t he British North America T'hll at~>llc Society.

I n my accumulation or mail which I round on my arriva l home from service with the Army were some copies of B;\'.1 TOPTr~ and I am wondering if it is possible to obtain copies or all back numbe•·s as I find that In the several I have received there are some valuabl l' and interesting articles.

    Very truly yours, A. G. K.

    • • • • Dear Sir:

Mr. Pa ine's silg'gestlon re. a stamp auction sale to publicize BNAPS Is worthy of consideration.

I wiiJ be quite willing to help with such when the time arrives. Sincerely,

    K. M. SMITH, # 273

Dea•· Sir: When restrictions here prohibited the sending of cunency out of the country, you

can imaginl' I was a bit anxious whether my remittance had reached you. Neverthelrss we cannot lPI trilling things like that stop a keen collector being a member of the bes• Philatelic Society in the World, so r am enclosing he1·ewith another $3.00 and this will pay my dues to the year 1950.

    S incerely, S. A. WOOD (New Zl'alantl)

CANADA'S PROVINCES It may interest some of the readers to learn how Canada and its nine Provinces

received their names. The name Canada, and !out· of the Provinces, Ontal'io, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec, were all del'ived from the Indian equiva lents.

Cat·tier, the great French explorer, left a record .of the word. "1\:ANADA" as of the language of the Hlll·on Indians; the translatlo.n being "village". Many of the Indian$ obse1·ved by Ca1tier Jived In villages along the St. Lawrence River. This Jed him to speak of that region as Kanada, or Canada. ·

Ontario Is t ranslated as meaning "Beautiful Lake" and bOth the Hu ron and Iroquois t l'ibes have similar words fot· ' lake'. Ontario has a greater population than any of the other P rovinces.

Quebec took its name from .iln Indian word meaning "TtJe Narrows". Ther-e was a s mall settlement beside a nai'I'Ow part or the St. Lawrence River and this was called Quebec. Later, the name was applied for the tet·ritory far around that settlement.

In the Province of Manitoba is a large lake. This Jake has a nan·ow part which the Ojibway Indians used to call "Manito Bau", meaning "st1·alt of the Manito (or spirit)". Thus the name of the Province and of Lake ::\ianltoba can be traced to the Indian name for th is strait.

Saskatchewan's name goes back to the Cree u·ibe. In the C1·ee language, SaskatchE'· wan bas the meaning "fast flowing river". In addition to the Province, we ha,·E' lht' long and very important Saskatchewan River.

Nova Scotia Is de1·ived from the Latin and mE\ans "New Scotland". Many of the eal'ly settlers in Nova Scotia came from Scotland.

Prince Edward Is land, the Sip,allest of the Provinces, was o~:~e-~ ~fl nonor or Edward, Duke of Kent. This Prince never rose to the British thr u fs daug'hter, Victoria, became Queen.

New Brunswick Is said lo have derived Its name from the town of New Brunswick In New Jersey after settlers moved from New Jersey to Canada.

Alber·ta honors a member of the Br itish Royal Family. A daughter of Queen Victoria and Pl'ince Albert was named Louise Caroline Albet·ta. This Princess was married to the man who was Govet·not·-General of Canada when the name Alberta was given to that part of Canada.

Bl'ltlsh Columbia canles in its name the fact that it was a British Colony before ll became a Pt·ovince of Canada. It also honors Christopher Columbus.
