Off to a Fast Start

January 2020 launched us into to a fresh new decade. New faces were added to the Chamber’s Board of Directors, and a leader-ship succession plan was established for 2021. Kristy Napier, of Central Bank, (although we share the same last name – no, we’re not related) will serve as your President in 2021.

Exciting news and updates kicked off our year. During our State

of the City address, held locally at Churchill’s nostalgic and beautiful event center on January 30th, 2020. Berea City Mayor,

Bruce Fraley, provided a thorough and transparent detailed re-port on the current projects, news, issues, and goals that the City

of Berea will embrace in 2020. An amazing crowd of over 130

attentive businessmen and women, plus several engaged community members from across Mad-ison County attended this kickoff event. Those who attended were privy to BREAKING

NEWS for Berea - the Berea Bypass Road Construction Project was included in the state’s budget! The state had just announced it an hour before our meeting.

The Bypass project was completely removed from the state’s budget three years ago, after dec-

ades of falling in priority levels, to falling off the budget completely by 2016. Thanks to the aggressive collaboration efforts of the Berea Chamber, which initiated a partnership with our

newly elected City Council members in 2017, and drew interest by our new Mayor in 2018, we developed open lines of communication with our region’s elected representatives and senators,

and made numerous business visits to Frankfort to jointly lobby together for the funding of this project. Because of these united efforts, economic development will flourish.

Another collaborative partnership in January was the Berea Business Fest, in which the Cham-

ber, the City, and Berea College created an environment on campus for students to dialogue and meet with a variety of businesses and services from around the area. This is a once per year op-portunity for students to learn about what’s available to them outside of campus while they’ve

made their home Berea College.

Lastly, our new Board of Directors held a brainstorming retreat in January. The action items we developed were to: establish aggressive financial goals for the future growth of the Chamber;

engage generational representation from all five generations of the current workforce; develop effective communication techniques; and build leaders and potential Board members via com-

mittee innovations. It’s your time to shine in 2020 – join our growth movement!

Get Involved Through Our Committees

During our annual Board of Directors Retreat in January, we began the process of rolling out our various planning committees for 2020.

As in previous years, our Board members take ownership of one or more com-mittees, which provides a direct line of communication back to our monthly Board meeting allowing each committee to express their unique needs and share their activities through a monthly report to the other Board members.

As you carve out your niche in our committees (see page 16 of this newsletter), you will find that some have standing monthly meetings (Economic Develop-ment, Spoonbread Festival, etc.) while other committees are more project ori-ented and may only meet two or three times leading up to their event (Awards Banquet, Geocaching Weekend, Christmas Parade, etc.).

To join a committee, you will need to call the Chamber office (986-9760) or email us at [email protected] and request to be added to our email distribution list for your selected committee(s). Then you will begin receiv-ing all future communications for committee meetings and activities for the coming year.

Our planning committees will be conducting organizational meetings in the coming weeks, so make plans now to get involved.

Lastly, as we have openings on our Board of Directors, we often look to our committee structure for up and coming leaders of the Chamber.

Sincerely,

David
