During the last month, most of us have watched ourlast racing events of the year. We were lucky enoughto see two shows that have a long-standing traditionbehind them, and a new event that attracted a muchlarger field of cars than we anticipated. The two long-standing shows were The National Short TrackChampionships at Rockford Speedway andOktoberfest at LaCrosse Speedway. The new eventwas the fall version of the Dirt Nationals at ElkoSpeedway. This column will summarize our visits tothese events.

Our trip to Rockford was the first time since the early1990’s we were able to be on hand for all three days

of the event. TheFriday night eventwas one we won’tsoon forget. I won’tgo into much detail,but let’s just say itreminded us of acombination of twoof our favorite TVshows; COPS,mixed together withMadhouse. Thisnight wasentertaining fromevery aspect of ontrack activity, andoff-track activity. Ifyou weren’t there, you missed a good time.

This year’s Rockford event also featured theSportsman and Late Model drivers from the ASAMidwest Tour. Defending Sportsman champion, ChrisMarek, was well on his way to a strong finish onSaturday night until contact sent him sliding throughthe infield grass. Fellow Minnesota traveler and,former NSTC champion Bryan Turtle, ended upgetting caught up in the melee and went for a wildride. Marek would rebound for a fifth place finish,with Turtle ending up on the flatbed. WeeklyRockford competitor Doug Bennett picked up the winfor the ASA Midwest Tour Sportsman Cars, withMarek picking up his second touring serieschampionship.

The Big-8 race was another one for the record booksas Ty Majeski pulled off an amazing feat for a

relatively new comer tothe high-banks ofRockford. Majeski waspressured for many lapsby Jeremy Miller.Bobby Wilberg threwhis name in the hat forthe battle for the lead toreally spice things up.Majeski would survivecontact from Wilbergand eventually hold offSteve Rubeck for thewin.

The trip to Rockfordalso was our firstopportunity to see firsthand the cars that trackphotographer Jimmy

Ambruoso has been passing along photos of for a fewyears. The Illini Midgets were on hand, and were theya treat to watch. These cars have to run dirt tires onthe pavement, and several drivers went around the

track like they were on dirt. This group had a decentamount of cars (15 were on hand), and they put on aheck of a show. For a track that featured Midgets aspart of their early history, we can only hope the IliniMidgets continue to be part of this show at Rockford.

Sunday brought the final day of action. For somebodythat has had a tough season in Super Late Modelcompetition, Steve Carlson was up to the challenge atRockford. Carlson worked his way to the front,passed Jacobe Goede just after the break, and cruisedto his eighth NSTC crown. For a guy that hadn’t been

to Rockford in ten years, it lookedlike it just like old times for Carlson.Goede made the best of his first tripto Rockford by holding on forsecond. Nick Panitzke also wasmaking his first start at Rockford,set fast time, and used the trickybottom groove to make his way tothird place at the end of the day.

The Mid Am drivers also made theirannual trek to Rockford for theSunday show. Veteran driver LyleNowak picked up the win after abattle with Scott Null. Null wouldend up getting into the turn 3 wall, ending a good runfor the Lake Mills native. Mark Pluer would work hisway to second with Danny Church taking third.

While some fans and drivers have coined the phrase“Wreckford” to describe Rockford, I have tocompletely disagree. Sure, there were severalspectacular wrecks over the course of the weekend,but I don’t think this is the fault of the track. Thisevent has a lot of history and carries a lot of prestigein the racing world. In my eyes, the wrecks aretypically a case of drivers competing at a track theydon’t normally race at, or local drivers going thatextra inch (or foot) to win a big race at their hometrack. I’ve seen just as many wrecks during otherseason ending specials as seen at Rockford.

Next up was four straight days ofbeautiful weather for the 2011version of Oktoberfest. Theaddition of the Futures race to theThursday night show has allowedfans to see Super Late Modelracing on all four days of theevent. Colin Reffner picked up theFutures win this year, afterlooking for a way around JoelTheisen for several laps. This wasReffner’s first career Super LateModel win. Reffner has just a fewyears experience in Late Modelcompetition, and only races once ayear at LaCrosse. The youngest

Reffner has had quite a string of success in a shorttime at Oktoberfest. Local LaCrosse competitors alsowrapped up their season championships on the firstnight of Oktoberfest with J. Herbst and Danny Gilstercrowned as Late Model and Sportsman champions.Andy Moore picked up another feature win to goalong with his 2011 championship in the Thunderstox.Other main event winners on Thursday night includedSteve Carlson in the LaCrosse Late models, JakeArneson in the Sportsman and Kyle Stark picking upthe Hornet enduro and the famous “Double-O” race.

Friday night saw a replay of the Schermerhorn/Kanebattle from the 2010 version of Oktoberfest. TheArea Sportsman race is one of our favorites for theweekend and this year was another awesome race.

Schermerhorn would hold off “The Freight Train” atthe checkered flag, but post race inspection handedthe win to Kane. We’re already looking forward tothe Area Sportsman race for 2012.

The Super Sportsman class saw Danny Gilster makea few modifications to his car to compete in this classdesigned for some of the other Sportsman typeclasses in the area. Gilster would go on for the winand also race the same car during the Saturday nightMid Am Stock Car Series feature.

The main attraction for Friday nights the last severalyears has been the three, 33-lap features named “TheDick Trickle 99.” This year’s event started off with abang, as Griffin McGrath and Nathan Haseleu wenthard into the turn 1 wall. I’m going to go out on a limbhere, but if there were a most popular driver contestduring the evening, based on the crowd reaction to hissegment wins, Dan Fredrickson would not have wonthis title. On the same note, if there were a steeringwheel toss competition, Griffin McGrath would havewon the title hands down. Fredrickson would go on towin two out of three segments, with Colin Reffner

picking up segment number two.Frederickson’s two wins were notenough to overcome an unlucky runin segment two. Neil Knoblock usedconsistency in all three segments tobe crowned the Dick Trickle 99winner for 2011.

The highlight of Saturday night of‘Fest was the Big 8 main event andthe MidAm main event. The Big-8drivers were out in full force with 55 cars attemptingto qualify. Their feature race saw Jon Lemke lead themajority of the event, building nearly a half-lap lead.Skylar Holzhausen tracked down the leader, withoutthe aid of a caution flag, and slipped past Lemke withjust a few laps to go. Lemke would hold on to thirdafter being passed by Zack Riddle. This racereminded of the days of a full field invert, as Lemkestarted on the pole and took off, with Holzhausenstarting 16th, chasing down the leader and eventuallypicking up the win.

The MidAm cars had a bit of a surprise as 16-yearold Claire Decker lead the first half of the race.Eventual race winner, and 2011 MidAm champion

James Swan, passed Decker for the leadat the halfway point. Swan would losethe lead on a restart late in the race, butpatiently worked his way back to thefront and took the lead from JeremySpoonmoore with just a few lapsremaining.

Sunday ofOktoberfest sawJohnny Sautercross the stripefirst, after leadingthe entire race.Unfortunately forSauter, his car didnot meet post racetechnicalinspection. TravisSauter followedJohnny for theentire race, andinherited the win

official Oktoberfest win. To clarify, Johnny will bescored as the winner in the ASA Midwest Tourrecord books, and Travis will be scored as theOktoberfest event winner. Can’t say that I’ve everseen something like this before, but it gave us plentyto talk about for the last month.

Another recent addition to the ‘Fest program is theJMK 63 on Sunday afternoon featuring the Big-8cars. This is another great opportunity to see howdrivers from many weekly tracks that run Big-8 rulesstack up against each other. Kyle Shear was crownedthe champion of this year’s event with Zack Riddle,Jason Schuler and Travis Stanley picking up individualsegment wins.

Our final event of the season was the first night of theFall Dirt Nationals at Elko Speedway. With a racethis late in the year, we were unsure as to how manycars would actually show up. Much to our surprise,the pits were overflowing with cars. A big part of this

Midwest Sprintcar Series (UMSS) and CornbeltClash Late Models also brought nearly 30 cars each.Not a bad way to spend a crisp October evening. Dayone winners were Kaley Gharst (UMSS), LanceMathees (Late Models), and Flyn’ Ryan Olson in theModifieds. Over the course of the weekend, therewere several last lap passes for main event wins.Ryan Olson ended up with a sweep for the weekendwinning both Modified events.

Great North Legends drivers Tim Brockhouse andMichael Ostdiek were crowned champions in theirrespective classes for Legends. With drivers fromacross the country on hand, these two gave the hometown crowd something to cheer for.

That’s a wrap for this column. We’ll be back withanother on-line issue in December with more driverinterviews and columns from our regular cast ofcharacters.

With the news following the finish of the Oktoberfest main event on Sunday October, 9 we here at TheMidwest Racing Connection have decide to recognize our own champion of the 2011 Oktoberfestevent. The ASA Midwest Tour levied penalties against Johnny Sauter, but will be scored as the winneron the tour. Oktoberfest officials, decided to award the win to second place finisher Travis Sauter.

Our champion is somebody that truly exemplifies the meaning of overcoming adversity. As the oldsaying goes, it’s not whether or not you fall down, but if you get back up. With this in mind we havedecided to recognize the timing light as the 2011 champion. After checking with our board of advisors,we feel the timing light overcame the most adversity during the course of the weekend. The timing lightwas virtually destroyed during qualifying by an errant car. The crew of on-site technicians came to therescue and brought the timing light back into action in a matter of minutes. The timing light performedflawlessly for the reminder of the weekend and reminded us all how important it is to not give up.

We at The Midwest Racing Connection feel the timing light portrays the type of champion we like tosee emerge from these events. The timing light could not be reached for comment at the time ofpublication.

The Inside Dirt

The October 2011 Elko Dirt Nationals concludedthe third season for the Upper Midwest Sprint CarSeries. I was not able to attend the fall ElkoNationals but judging from the video highlights bothnights featured the best dirt track racing that hastaken place at Elko to date. Congratulations toJerry Richert Jr. for winning the 2011 UMSS pointstitle. Chad Patterson and Anna Kouba tied for the2011 UMSS Rookie of the Year title. Highlights ofthe UMSS season included the continued progressof Andy Jones who stepped up his Sprint Carprogram and managed to win three Features whilefinishing second in the points in his sophomoreSprint Car season. Another driver who came onstrong in 2011 was Scott Broty who won twoFeatures and finished third in points.

The UMSS Traditional (non-wing) Sprints enjoyed avery successful first season. If you did not get anopportunity to see the Traditional cars I encourageyou to get out next season and catch some of theirraces. The cars are evenly matched and put onsome of the most exciting battles you’ll see in anyclass of race car. The mix of drivers runs the fullgamut from seasoned veterans to rookies and thetalent level has shown a marked improvementthroughout the course of the season as everyonegained more seat time. Kevin Bradwell proved thata driver can come from the unlikely path of PureStocks and Hornets and excel in non-winged Sprintsby capturing the UMSS TSCS points title in his firstyear of open wheel racing.

Speaking of a mix of seasoned veterans andnewcomers the UMSS winged division is also aperfect example of this kind of mix of talent. JerryRichert Jr. has made four appearances in KnoxvilleNationals A Mains as well as scoring 10 KnoxvilleFeature wins while racing there weekly. Richerthas also won track championships at the Jacksonand Husets Speedways during his lengthy career.Brooke Tatnell, a part time runner with the UMSS,scored six UMSS Feature wins during the 2011season, the most of any driver that ran with theseries. As recently as six years ago in 2005 Tatnellwas voted the 13th most talented Sprint Car driver

in the nation (tied with none other than SammySwindell) and had a full time ride with the World ofOutlaws going into 2006 as a member of their “MeanFifteen”. Unfortunately owners shutting down theirteams due to a faltering economy forced the popularAustralian off the tour at a time when it was difficultto find another Outlaw ride. A leg injury as a resultof a drive shaft failure that required surgery put himout of commission for a good portion of the 2009season including the Knoxville Nationals. As youmight recall Tatnell defied doctor’s orders and gotback in the driver’s seat in time to win his first of twoconsecutive Jerry Richert Sr. Memorial races.Tatnell’s presence at UMSS races when his schedulepermits raises the bar for the UMSS drivers and givesthem something to gage their progress against.

Andy Jones’ roots are in Modified racing. Andy, whomight be thought of by some in the Sprint Carestablishment as a brash young outsider, has quicklymade an impact on the local Sprint Car scene. I hadthe privilege of getting to know Andy’s father Dennisyears before Andy ever climbed into the seat of arace car. Keeping up with the Joneses has been adaunting task for Modified competitors around theseparts for decades. The Jones family is one of themost successful racing families I have had theprivilege of getting to know in my time as a writer.They have enjoyed a great deal of success in theModifieds and are not intimidated by the switch toanother form of racing. Few people know this butDennis has known Craig Dollansky for decades andDennis would make his personal truck available toDanny Lasoski when the Dude was in town racingwith the WoO at the Princeton Nationals. Laskoskispent some post race party time at the Jones shop sothe Jones family has past connections to Sprint Carracing.

As you can see, both the UMSS winged andTraditional Sprint Cars are attracting drivers fromother forms of the sport and that is one way thatSprint Car racing is going to grow in the upperMidwest. Many of these newcomers were recentlyintroduced to Sprints and do not know or in somecases don’t care about the history of the sport norare they intimidated by the credentials of their fellowcompetitors. It’s good when young drivers see theSprints race, imagine that they would be fun to driveand decide to give them a try but the influx of newpeople is going to change the culture just like it hasin earlier generations. Older folks like myselfremember the concern expressed by veteran driversfor the new drivers when roll cages first came onthe scene. The veterans felt that the youngerdrivers who came up with the roll cages didn’t havethe same respect for the cars that the veterans thatraced without cages had. I foresee the local SprintCar culture changing in a similar manner as newpeople get involved. As hard as that might be forsome of the old guard to swallow it’s going to benecessary for the growth of the sport.

Sadly Indy Car racing suffered a tragic loss at theirLas Vegas season finale when this year’s Indy 500winner Dan Wheldon perished in a terrible accidentduring the early stages of the race. Wheldon’s cargot over the wheel of another machine and literallyflew into the catch fence at over 200 miles per hour.The car caught the air like a big kite and turned inmid air so that the cockpit hit the fence first resultingin unsurvivable head trauma. I’m saddened by theincident but I accept the fact that racing is not andprobably never will be 100% safe. NASCAR star

Jimmy Johnson caused a stir when he opined that theIRL cars should stop running on ovals and restricttheir racing to road and street courses. I beg to differwith Johnson’s opinion; does anybody remember theChampionship Auto Racing Teams otherwise knownas CART? CART distanced itself from oval racingresulting in a split with the oval racing purists thatbred the fledgling IRL and eventually led to CARTsown demise. On the other hand I agree with Johnsonthat today’s Indy Cars are getting to the point wherethey border on exceeding the ability of some of thetracks to contain them. They have such incredibledown force that when combined with high bankingthey become a big one waiting to happen. The wordslow isn’t in the vocabulary of most racers but I thinkit might be time to reel back the speeds of the IRLcars before one gets into the stands.

The Vegas Indy Car wreck in spite of it’s violentappearance was a perfect storm that potentially couldbe repeated in any form of motorsports. Keep inmind that no other drivers involved in the IRL wreckwere seriously injured and the cars are purposelyconstructed to break apart and dissipate energy in acrash. If Wheldon’s car had taken a differenttrajectory he might have walked away and we’d betouting the safety of the IRL cars. If that hadhappened I think it might have been easy to forget thiswreck in time resulting in few if any changes beingmade. Unfortunately I can’t think of many safetyimprovements in racing that were not the direct resultof a fatality.

Jimmy should take note that Sprint Cup cars are notexempt from the type of perfect storm accident thatbefell the IRL. I watched the Talladega Cup raceand took note of the tight packs produced by restrictorplate racing, especially on starts and restarts. Wehave seen big wrecks in Stock Car racing with carsgetting airborne but the field always manages toscatter and avoid the flipping cars. Not that I everwant to see this but it would be possible in aNASCAR perfect storm for a flipping car to bounceoff the tops of several of the tightly bunched packbefore the drivers have time to react. Roll cages,energy cushioning walls, new safer cars, all of thesefactors make Stock Car racing one of the safestforms of the sport. Nevertheless, the weakest link ona Cup car is the windshield which would offervirtually no protection from axles or wholedifferentials turned into projectiles by a violent crash.A perfect storm does not discriminate between thevarious forms of the sport and when those kinds ofspeeds are involved the seemingly impossible canpotentially become a reality.

The 2011 season closed out my thirteenth year as acolumnist for MRC. When I came onboard in Aprilof 1999 I didn’t have much of a plan but I had apassion for the sport that I wanted to share. Sincethat time I have attended 397 races at 32 differenttracks as a representative of MRC. As one mightexpect of such a long tenure there have been plenty

of outside distractions.Tracks changed hands,some closed and are nolonger operating and newfacilities were opened. Iwelcomed sixgrandchildren into theworld, we all endured theevents of 9/11 and thatsame year I soldieredthrough a difficult seasonthat culminated in necksurgery. Adult childrengot married, divorced andremarried and a belovedbrother-in-law passedaway. Adult kids movedin and out and in and outand in... It’s not toodifficult to write a column,a lot of people are capableof doing this, but to hangin there year in and yearout through life’s ups anddowns is the realchallenge. I have tried todo that to the best of myability and I hope that youhave enjoyed the resultsof my labor.

It remains to be seen howmuch I’ll be able to goracing next season buthopefully I’ll be able towork something out so Ican contribute to MRC ona more limited basis. Iwant to thank Rob Hahnfor giving me theopportunity to write forMRC’s predecessorpublication Minnesota’sRacing Connection andDan Plan for keeping meon staff after the changeof ownership andrebranding as theMidwest RacingConnection. Thanks to all the racing teams that haveput up with my poking around your pit area whileyou’re busy trying to prepare for the night’s events.Thanks to the promoters and series directors thathave extended their hospitality enabling me to do thisweek in and week out. Going inCircles

With the end of the local race season upon us, hereare just a few random thoughts, comments, and othergoodies....

Southern Wisconsin Bandit racer, Robby Robinsonwon his first feature in August of this year, and itcame at an unlikely venue. Robby had raced strictlyon paved tracks for the past couple of years, and on awhim, decided to give the dirt a try at the Sycamore(Illinois) Speedway one night. He ended up taking thecheckers and getting that first feature win on his veryfirst try on the dirt. Robby said that the trophy wonwas as tall as he was.

I attended the 20th annual Bahama Bracket Nationalsat the Rockford Speedway recently. Some peopledecry the lack of late models racing at this show, asthe rules denote “stock stub” only. A few older latemodels do show up, but in reality, it is the sportsman/hobby stock type cars that perform the best racing.One of the feature races was decided by only acouple of inches, and another by a couple of feet.Proves my notion that the best racing is not always ina “top” division. Always good to see some of thesame drivers race this event every year. Ed Hast,John Paul Odegaard, Dubs Anderson, Ray Swan, andRick Wilson are some of many who come every yearto put on a fantastic show. All are appreciated! By

the way, Iowan Merv Chandler was theonly driver to accept the prize of a tripfor two to the Bahamas, in place of theprize money.

Sad to hear of the recent passing of2010 Columbus 151 late modelchampion Scott Ollerman. My thoughtsand prayers are with the family. Scottgot his start in spectator drag racingback in the late 1970’s, and progressedfrom there.

I was just thinking.... Many tracks usethe moniker “area sportsman” for acatchall name for the sportsman division. If youhave a sportsman car but are not from the “area,”does this mean you cannot compete?

The Central Wisconsin Mini Stock Association groupthat races four cylindercars at Marshfield (Wis.)Speedway reported thatthey only had one cautionin their races all year, thatbeing for a blown enginein one of the cars. Yes, Irealize that these aresmall cars racing on a bighalf-mile, and they shouldnot have many cautions,but still, that is a record tobe proud of by all whorace in this group.

A Must See Event

Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, IA is a premiersprint car track. The track is a ½ mile with a darkIowa soil surface sweeping turns, shorter stretchesand little banking. The grandstands hold just a littleless than 25,000 fans and the atmosphere is much likea NASCAR track. There is a lot of history at thistrack and it houses the Sprint Car Hall of Fame.While it is primarily a sprint car track, they have beenthe host to the Lucas Oil Late Model Nationals forthe last 8 years. This is a Late Model event that isnot to be missed.

The Late Model Nationals is a 3 day event beginningon Thursday and running through Saturday. This yearthe weather was perfect for fall racing on all 3 days.

While the track was tacky and fast there wasamazing racing and a lot of passing all weekend.There were 65 late models this year including some ofthe best drivers in the country. The format includesfull shows both Thursday and Friday nights and thetop 24 in points from the two nights make the 100 lap$40,000 win feature race on Saturday night. Thepurse for the whole weekend makes everything fromthe heats, to each of the features, worth watching.

The town of Knoxville embraces the race fans duringthe whole event. There are other activities scheduledaround the racing, in different parts of town so thatthe fans are never bored and have other things tooccupy their time. This year there was a car showand an auction held at the Hall of Fame and therewere many trailers with T-shirts and racingparaphernalia as well. There are a couple of hotels,many restaurants and the camp grounds are clean andcared for, and include permanent bathrooms andshowers. There is a small bar directly across thestreet from the raceway, called the Dingus Lounge,which has grown over the years where race fans anddrivers can go after the racing is done and hangaround and talk and have a drink. This social timeafter the races is also something not to be missed.

Next years Lucas Oil Late Model Nationals arescheduled for September 27 – 29 and I am sure thatthis will be another event that is not to be missed. Ifyou have an opportunity to attend this event it isdefinitely worth adding to your racing schedule.

NASCAR does not hold a top series event inMinnesota, but with General Mills, 3M, Best Buy andGreat Clips all sponsoring top level drivers in thesport; they come to race in our great state anyway.

Thursday night October 6th NASCAR Cup stars:Greg Biffle, Trevor Bayne, AJ Allmendinger, MarcosAmbrose along with Nationwide driver Jason Lefflerand former Truck series “rookie of the year” ErikDarnell all raced a 30 lap exhibition race in GreatNorth Legends cars against local drivers at Elko(MN) Speedway.

Richard Petty was in attendance and signedautographs. He had the longest line of autographseekers by far, and he signed for everybody with histrademark smile, cowboy hat and sunglasses. In this“what have you done for me lately” world, I wasimpressed that a guy who has been retired since 1992was so well received; he truly was treated like aking. When asked about his favorite race car,he mentioned the 1973-74 Dodge because it was wellbalanced and “it made it easier on me,” said Petty.

NASCAR owner Jack Roush was asked by a fan toautograph their custom Roush Ford F-150 pickup, thecrowd laughed and Jack said he would. Well, he DID,he walked right out to the parking lot and signed hisname on the dash of the passenger side. The man’swife then quickly replied, “I guess I’m not putting my

feet up on the dash anymore.” Roush also wasasked if he was in favorof the new fuel injectioncoming into NASCAR in2012. He said it wouldbe much more expensiveand would cost as muchas $5000 more per carnext year but, “it’s whatwe need to do,” saidRoush.

18 cars competed in the30 lap exhibition race,former I-94 Racewaydriver “Showtime” TylerSjoman from AlexandriaMN started eighth rowinside and slowlyworked his way up frontfor the win followed by Michael Ostdiek and KyleHansen.

Marcos Ambrose looked the fastest of the NASCARguys, he was in second place with 10 laps remaining,but then got shuffled back and finished 6th. Daytona500 winner Trevor Bayne looked good on the track,staying with the top group and finishing fourth, hejumped out of the car and said “this is the most fun Ihave had in a long time.”

AJ Allmendinger finished 8th and Greg Biffle stayedout of trouble near the back of the pack, it was hisfirst time in a Legends car and he didn’t know whatgear to race in, the first segment he was slow in fifth,but shifted to fourth in the final segment and wasmuch better.

This event is named MN Motorsports teams giveback, money raised during this charity event went tothe Minnesota Military Family Foundation. Manymilitary members were on hand to enjoy the festivitiesat Elko Speedway.

I was impressed with the NASCAR drivers and theirinteraction with fans and our local drivers. I sawRichard Petty, AJ Allmendinger and Greg Biffle walkthrough the pits after the races to talk with the localdrivers, take pictures and sign their race cars. Evenduring the pressures of a long season, these driversseemed to enjoy themselves and give back at thesame time.

The history books will show that a Sauter won the100 lap ASA Midwest Tour finale as part of the 42nd

Annual Oktoberfest racing weekend October 6-9,2011 atLa Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway, West Salem, WI.,but which one?

Johnny Sauter dominated the event leading every lapbut upon going through post race inspection wasfound to have issues with his #43 Super Late Model.The ASA group in these instances allows the driver tokeep the win, but no money or points can be kept.The track meanwhile takes the win away along withall points and money and gives the victory to the nextdriver in line passing inspection. In this case it wasTravis Sauter who placed 2nd in the event. Everyonemoves up a spot with the unhappy victor being scoredlast with a disqualification.

So will Travis Sauter be listed as the winner of theevent his 2nd in a row, or Johnny Sauter with an

asterisk next to his name? It appears with the twodecisions laid down the answer is both! If anyone isout there like me that likes to dig through racing’s pastthey’ll be scratching their head when they comeacross this one 25 years from now.

This year’s Oktoberfest was again blessed withfantastic weather and the racing over the four daysdefinitely didn’t disappoint either. Thursday action gotthings rolling with the NASCAR Late ModelChampionship to be determined. Steve Carlson easilywon the 40 lap Feature finale but with his 5th placefinish, J. Herbst became the champion, his 2nd in thelast three years here. Herbst outlasted Todd Korishwho for next year vows to have at least one more caron the track to join in the “Team” car concept thathelps immensely in chasing these championships.

The Futures division of Super Late Models were alsoracing tonight and a huge field of up and comingdrivers were on hand to do battle. Collin Reffnerpicked a great time to capture his first ever SuperLate Feature win as he raced to the convincing 25 lapvictory over Corey Jankowski, Joel Theisen, BeccaKasten and Matt Tifft. Reffner, who is a thirdgeneration driver appears well on his way to asuccessful career in the sport.

One of the most competitive races on the night wasthe Sportsman feature as no less than four driversbattled for the win. When the dust, and flying infieldgrass had cleared it was Jake Arneson taking the winover Greg Scheck and Rick Schermerhorn. Evenmore impressive for Arneson grabbing the victorywas he did it driving with a broken arm! Dan Gilsterwith another steady season of racing took the

Sportsman Division Championship, his 5th . Of coursewith track rules stating you must either move up adivision or sit out a season it will be interesting to seewhat Gilster does in 2012. He’s had to face thispredicament 5 times here now and each found himsitting out the year and racing elsewhere. That’s fiveyears of having to miss racing at your local track infront of the local fans! Andy Moore will have to makethat decision as well as he was the 2011 ThunderstoxChampion at the track for 2011. Whatever Mooredecides he went out in style tonight winning thatdivision’s feature event on the final night of racing.

One of the most popular races during the weekend isthe Dick Trickle 99 which commemorates Trickle andhis #99 race cars in three 33 lap features. Bestoverall finishes in the three determine the championand a very happy Neil Knoblock took honors thisyear. Knoblock remembers the days of Trickle racingin Wisconsin as he was just beginning his career asTrickle was moving on to bigger things in the sport.Receiving the race winning award from Tricklehimself according to Knoblock was the biggestprivilege in his life. You can’t say it any better thanthat and that is exactly what Oktoberfest racing is allabout, tradition and racing on one of short trackracings biggest stages.

Skylar Holzhausen put on a passing clinic in the Big8 68 lap feature event on Saturday driving all the wayfrom 16th starting position to the front to win theevent. Holzhausen finally caught race long leader JonLemke to take the lead and then held off Zack Riddle

for the popular victory which amazingly ran green tocheckered.

Kyle Shear was Mr. Consistency on Sunday in theJMck 63 event placing 3rd in each 21 lap segmentnamed after promoter extraordinaire John McKarnsto win the overall title. Jason Schuler who spendsmost of his time these days as crew chief for ASATour regular Jonathan Eilen hopped in a car for theJMck event and promptly won one of the 21 lapsegments! Dan Fredrickson was informed justminutes before the event he would be driving in theASA Midwest Tour Truck Series feature on the day.It worked out extremely well as Fredrickson went onto win the main event for that series.

Here and there…Andrew Morrissey never did win anASA Midwest Tour feature event in 2011 but hisconsistent finishes earned him the title for the year outpointing Jacob Goede and Nathan Haseleu…SkylarHolzhausen on the strength of his $10,000 victory atElko Minnesota Speedway was named Rookie of theYear for the series…This year’s Champions Reunionwas the biggest and best yet featuring over 60 driversthat raced and won from as early as the 1950s intothe 2000s. Of course providing much of theentertainment during the day was Dick Trickle whowas again on hand. Ernie Tuff was again here andthis year brought his 1932 Ford Coupe race car lastdriven by Jerry “Scratch” Daniels who was also onhand. Donald Denny was a surprise guest during theday. Denny first built and promoted the North LaCrosse Speedbowl which was the track in the areabefore La Crosse Fairgrounds was built. Dennyclaims he still cringes thinking of some of those firstevents as in its infancy the sport was very rough andtumble! Great to see dirt track stars Leon Plank andTom Steuding at the Reunion. Between the two thereare way too many victories to try andcount!...Another up and coming driver, Cardell Potterwon the Stubby Feature race which is open to thosewho don’t qualify for the Trickle 99 feature field.Potter held off veteran Mark Eswein for the win withJoel Theison taking 3rd…Corey Jankowski who itseemed competed in almost all the divisions during theweekend, won the C Feature for Super Late Modelson Saturday to highlight his racing at ‘Fest 42…RickSchermerhorn in a thrilling battle won the 25 lap AreaSportsman race on Friday…maybe. Actually the postrace inspection found Schermerhorn’s carburetor outof spec and the win went to Brent Kane…Thenovelty Double O event utilizing the big and smalltrack here and featuring Super Late Model,Sportsman, Outlawz and Thunderstox machines waswon by the smallest engined car in the race! KyleStark drove his 4 cylinder racer to the win beating allthe big dogs in the process…Over 18,000 fansattended this years four days of racing known asOktoberfest. It still amazes this writer that a numberof folks who come to the event don’t even attend oneday of racing! I guess that’s just some of themystique of the event and plans are underway for the43rd Annual to be held October 5-8, 2012…

And back in time, on October 9th, 1960 the first year of racing at the paved Griffith Park Speedway, WisconsinRapids, WI.,the final event of the season was held. Don Lewis won the Feature and was followed by JereO’Day, Morrie Piotrowski, Les Katzner and John Moquin. Other winners were Ken Pankratz in the semi-main, Red Nickels in the Trophy Dash and 4th heat, Harold Bertram in the 1st heat, Ray Hoffman in the 2nd

heat, Herb Kurth in the 3rd heat, and Lewis who also set fast time on the day…
