“Thank You” As we draw closer to Thanksgiving, I have spent some
time considering just how thankful I am to be serving
Quaker Springs and Schuylerville UMCs. Jackie and I
feel blessed to be with all of you. You have been
absolutely amazing to us and our family. From our first
Sunday we have felt welcomed, and like we were
brought right in as part of the family. There is nowhere
else we would rather be serving. Thank you all for
extending remarkable Christian love and hospitality to
our family.
“A Call to Prayer”
For the last 5 weeks our Thursday afternoon Bible study
has been going through the book of Acts; and leading
this Bible study has inspired and convicted me. Acts is
about how the church began after Christ’s ascension into
heaven and the sending of the Holy Spirit to empower
the church on the day of Pentecost.
It is amazing to see all that the early church did! This
small group of persecuted people grew by leaps and
bounds as they lead people to salvation, fed the hungry,
clothed the needy, healed the sick, and much more. They
did all of this without tax exempt status, a formal
meeting space, A/V systems, or creative marketing.
They did have one thing though: prayer. Indeed Jesus
promised to answer their prayers and be with them as
they carried out the Great Commission (bringing Jesus’
love and truth to the whole world). Jesus made good on
His promise. His small, ragtag group of persecuted
people led a movement that is now the farthest-reaching
religion with the most adherents in the entire world.
While I have been leading this study, I have been talking
with lots of people, both in our churches and the
community at large, who are baffled by the lack of folks
who go to church. I agree it can be discouraging and
challenging to think about how we can lead people to the
love of Christ when so many seem disinterested and
otherwise occupied. Despite our obstacles we can still
pray. In fact, I believe that the only way we are going to
impact our community and see people receive the love of
God is for God to empower us to do it.
As we prepare to enter a new season in our church
calendar, Advent, I would like to invite each one of you
into a fresh season of dedicated prayer. I know we all
pray, but I want us to be united in praying in a way that
might be new for some of us. In addition to praying for
our cares and circumstances I want to call us all to pray
for our communities of Schuylerville and Quaker
Springs each and every day. Pray that the hearts of the
people of our communities would be softened to hear
and receive Jesus’s love for them. We cannot be God’s
people apart from God’s power – so let’s pray that Jesus
would empower us to be His people to fulfill His
mission of bringing His love to our communities!
Yours in Christ,
Pastor John

QSUMC Snow Cancellation Policy
Our church has to deal with several issues when
bad weather arrives on Sunday morning.
1. We have no on street parking and must
have our parking lots clear. That’s not
always possible.
2. Our pastor needs to travel 14 miles
round trip on dangerous roads to reach
our church.
3. Most of our parishioners travel several
miles to get to our church.
QSUMC has developed the following snow closing
policy. It’s the same as last year.
1. Tim Lagoe will check conditions at the
church and consult with Pastor John on a
final decision before 8:00 AM on
Sunday morning.
2. Please call the Lagoe home (584-1812)
after 8:00 AM if you think our church
might need to close.
We all travel different roads and distances to get to
church. If you feel the roads are too slippery, please
stay home. We will miss you but would rather have
you safe.

QSUMC HALLOWEEN PARTY
October 28th brought out the ghouls, goblins and
princesses in force, 43 children from the Quaker
Springs area, accompanied by friends and relatives
to enjoy the party hosted by our church and the
Quaker Springs Firehouse. It was in full swing
from the time the first child came thru the door to
enjoy all the games, treats and fun provided. Each
and every one dressed up as their favorite (or their
Moms’) character.
This is an ongoing, not to be missed event in our
community. My memory goes back to when it was
held in the Grange that was at least 20 years ago as
we brought our grandson for his first Halloween and
it had been held for years before that! When the
Grange closed, it never missed a beat and became
the favorite project of Tim and Deb Lagoe, and the
Women’s Auxiliary of the Firehouse. Many thanks
go to them for the dedication and hard work it takes
to make this happen.
Returning this year after missing us for a couple
years was John Green of Skeeter and Company. In
addition to his Magic Show, featuring Cotton the
Bunny, he created balloon characters for every
child, some matching their outfits. Tim was the
recipient of the first, a pumpkin scepter for him to
lead the kids in the costume parade. Shelby Dodd
got one that was made by looking at a picture of her
puppy, Seymour. It was a great likeness. One
parent was so impressed he left the party long
enough to put it in his car so it would not get
popped! So much fun!
Every party I can remember has had a piñata…this
year, one particularly motivated little boy took a
swing that didn’t break open Sponge Bob, but
knocked it right off its post. Time out to reassemble
and shortly after the candy rained down on all. The
mad dash that followed to fill the treat bags
provided looked as if the kids had not already been
stuffed with cookies and cupcakes!
If you think this is just for little ones, it isn’t. It
gives neighbors a chance to share some time before
we get housebound by the winter that is not that far
away. There are plenty of snacks, candy, candy and
more candy to keep all on a sugar high, so make it a
point to drop in next year. It’s always on the
Sunday before Halloween, a time to try out that
costume before the Big Day.
Again, many thanks to Tim and Deb Lagoe for
orchestrating this event again. Thanks to the
Firehouse and the Auxiliary for providing the space
and the snacks, and to all the QSUMC members
who donated cash or candy to help out. Another
thank you to those who helped decorate and manage
the games and prizes. They included: Pastor John,
Deb and Tim Lagoe, Amanda Lagoe, Linda
Campbell, Connie Turner, Mary Jo Michaud,
Sharon Roby, Tristan Stallone, Bonnie and Bob
Greenfeld and Shelby Dodd. (My sincere apology,
if I missed your name). A special thank you goes to
Sean Kelleher and Debbie Peck Kelleher from the
Quaker Springs Fire Department for all their help.
It takes a Village!

THANK YOU SUMC!
For those of us who don’t get Trick or Treaters
anymore and miss it, the new tradition at
Schuylerville is a treat for sure! Bob and I
participated last year, our favorite holiday, and we
were happy to know that it would be repeated. Not
only repeated, but expanded! Way more cars
participated, all decked out in Halloween
themes. The addition of the snacks inside the
church and opening the facilities to the Trick or
Treaters was so welcome. I remember the days of
walking with the kids and hearing someone had to
“go” and there wasn’t a thing you could do about it.
What a way to show the community you care!
Since we are kids at heart, getting our truck
”dressed” was a process that was started right after
the festivities last year. We hit up the sales, finding
all sorts of fun stuff, and we did it again this year.
We are all ready with another idea…the waiting
will be hard!
We tried to calculate how many kids came thru, but
since they came in surges and all accompanied by
parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, it was
really difficult. The best part was each, no matter
how small, said thank you!
Trunk or Treat provided a very safe environment for
the kids to fill their treat sacks, a great time to see
people you haven’t seen in a while, and a few hours
to play at being a kid. Thanks so much to SUMC
for hosting! Can’t wait for next year! Hope to see
you there!

Pumpkin Sale at QSUMC
Thank you to everyone who purchased our
pumpkins. We were fortunate to have bumper
pumpkin crop this year. The pumpkins were some
of the biggest and healthiest we have ever raised!
Pumpkins sold quickly this year with proceeds
totaling $500. All proceeds are being donated to
Quaker Springs UMC Kitchen Renovation Project.

My Story
When I was 12, I was assigned the job of dusting
the church pews on Saturday to be ready for Sunday
service. When dusting was done, I decided to read
the big pulpit Bible. Starting with Genesis 1 . I read
to verse 26, where God says” let us make man in
our image”. I said “but you are a trinity, that’s 3
parts- I see only 2.” However, I’m so young,
compared to you, so I‘ll take your word for it.
In April 2018, I was listening to TBN and heard
Samuel Rodriqis taking about a doctor working in
an Artificial Insemination Clinic, preparing for a
“procedure”. He had put a human egg in focus on
his microscope, then added sperm. When the sperm
contacted the egg there was a flash of light. The
doctor was astonished. God had added the ever
living soul, part three! Wow! We are a trinity! The
Bible is true, God is real and keeps his Word……

Love Came Down At Christmas
& In The Bleak Midwinter
“Love Came Down At Christmas” and “In The Bleak
Midwinter” are two of my favorite Christmas hymns.
Both hymns were written in the late 1800’s by the
English poet, Christina Rossetti. It’s hard to sing these
hymns without developing some good old fashioned
Christmas spirit. When I hear these songs, I think of
many happy times in my church, home and community.
I think of the children’s Christmas programs, school
concerts, Christmas trees and time spent with family and
friends. I suppose that’s why it bothered me when I
learned the details of Christina Rossetti’s life.
Christina was born in England on December 5, 1830.
She was the youngest of four children (I sister & 2
brothers). Her father was a college professor and her
family was well connected with several famous authors
and poets of the time. They frequently had dinner with
Lewis Carole, the author of “Alice In Wonderland”.
Her two brothers were educated at Kings College. Both
men had successful careers as poets and artists. At that
time, women and men did not share equal status. She
and her sister were educated at home and brought up to
be devout Anglo-Catholics by their mother. Religion
was at the center of every day. Their lives were based
around numerous religious holidays and feast days
honoring the saints. Christina’s older sister eventually
became an Anglican nun. It might be dangerous to say
that a person could be too religious, especially in a
church newsletter. I think the danger is in placing too
much emphasis on the rules and not enough on the big
ideas of our faith
Christina was engaged to James Callahan in 1848. She
broke off the engagement when he became a Roman
Catholic. (I married a Roman Catholic and was one
myself) While in her early 30’s, she fell in love with
Charles Cayly. She broke off that engagement when she
determined that Charles was not a “true Christian”.
Christina never did marry or even leave her family. She
battled mental and physical health problems her entire
life. As an adult, she suffered from a disfiguring thyroid
disease called Graves’ Disease and breast cancer. She
outlived most of her closest relatives and cared for many
of them during their final days. Christina’s life was a
struggle and some of her poetry reflected that. Many of
her poems dealt with the nearness of death and the relief
it would bring. Several scholars have described her
poems as morbid and melancholy. There are many
examples on the internet. The first stanza of “In The
Bleak Midwinter” seems to reflect this criticism.
In the bleak midwinter/frosty wind made moan
earth stood hard as iron/water like a stone
snow had fallen/snow on snow/ snow on snow
in the bleak midwinter/long ago
However, the next stanza reflects a faith in God and
hope for the future.
Our God, heaven cannot hold him/ nor earth sustain
Heaven and earth shall flee away/when He comes to rein
In the bleak midwinter/ a stable place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty/Jesus Christ
Like many of us, Christina Rossetti had a very tough
life. She did the best she could with the life she had. I
am not surprised that she was discouraged. She had a
right to be. Thankfully, she held on to her faith and that
faith created something we can all be thankful for. For
most of us, Christina Rossetti will be remembered best
for two Christmas poems that eventually found their way
into our hymnal and our Christmas season.

Report on “The Way” 2018
In August 2014, SUMC opened
The Way a “gently used clothing
store”. The Way is a visible
mission of our church serving the community of
Schuylerville and the surrounding area. Over the
past four years literally tons of clothing has been
donated, sorted, put on racks and sold for the price
of one or two dollars per item. When we are open,
Fridays from 1 to 6 pm and Saturdays from 9 am to
4 pm, volunteers greet customers, help them find
clothes and serve as cashiers and baggers.
The Way tithes ten percent of the gross
income to many organizations in our local
communities. Volunteers meet quarterly to decide
what local organizations will receive the tithe for
that quarter. Since the store opened, The Way has
donated just over $18,312 back to the community.
Our list of recipients to date include: Schuylerville
Fire Dept. Aux, General Schuylerville EMS,
Schuylerville Library, SAFFER - local food pantry,
OSAA Old Saratoga Athletics (youth sports),
Victory Mills FD, Quaker Springs FD, Easton
Greenwich EMS, Middle Falls VFD, Greenwich,
VFD, Schuylerville School "Share & Care" fund,
Quaker Springs UMC, Saratoga Animal Shelter,
Shelters of Saratoga (Code Blue), Free
Thanksgiving meals partnership w/ Espressohuis,
Bacon Hill Reformed church, Old Saratoga
Reformed Church, Schuylerville VFD, Ft. Miller
Reformed Church, Dollars for Scholars, Faith
Chapel Church, Notre Dame Church, Turning Point
Wesleyan Church, Turning Point Parade, St.
Stephen's Episcopal Church, Greenwich UMC,
Schuylerville Youth Program, Green Ribbon
School, Double H Ranch (serving kids w/
disabilities), Hudson Crossing Park, Mission Trip to
Haiti, Supper for VFD's at Clarks Steakhouse,
Rebuilding Together, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts,
Schuylerville Robotics Team, H.O.P.E,
Schuylerville American Legion, Greenwich VFW,
We continue to partner with St. Pauly
Textile East, Inc., an organization that takes those
items that we do not wish to sell and or do not sell
at The Way and they pay us per pound. To date
this year we have received approximately $350.
While thus far the income has been good,
we continue to have monthly expenses including
rent, heat, cleaning, lights, garbage removal, lawn
care as well as the routine items needed to keep a
retail store running (boxes, hangers, markers, tape,
etc.) We continue our established policy of keeping
a base balance of $5,000 out of our funds in our
account. Any other funds remaining are used
toward emergency and long term expenses of the
church.
We continue to coordinate with our local
food pantry, S.A.F.E.R. and Schuylerville Central
School via the “Back Pack Program”, we have
given out coupons for shopping at The Way.
Families are able to purchase clothing with these
coupons vs. paying cash.
Also this fall, Pastor John, has begun a
Prayer Table, “Caffeine, Carbs and Care”, where we
offer coffee, juice and a snack to our patrons.
Those wishing prayer can deposit their prayer
request in a jar for our church to pray over during
weekly service or Pastor John will pray with that
person at that time. This has been a wonderful way
for us to introduce Pastor John to The Way and
reach out to our customers.
During the week, when we are not open,
members of SUMC, QSUMC and our local
community volunteers give their time. It takes
many hours of volunteer time each week to keep up
with moving donations from the bin to the store,
sorting and boxing clothes and refilling the racks as
well as changing layouts and coordinating volunteer
worker schedules. We continue to have number of
local community volunteers join our team this year
and we are always looking for more to help in any
area.
We will have a need this winter (January –
March) when several members will be away to
warmer climates and we will need extra hands to
assist. If you are able to help during these
months, please contact Sue Harrington or Tena
Flanders.

“Give thanks, with a grateful heart…”
It has been an amazing fall at The Way. We’ve
been extremely busy since August when we put out
our fall inventory. Now the winter clothes are on
the racks, and last Friday, November 9, we had a
brief meeting to decide where our tithe for the
previous quarter would be donated.
Every three months, ten percent of our income
returns to the community. This time, almost $1,300
in funds were donated to the Care and Share fund at
Schuylerville Central School, the VFW in
Greenwich, the American Legion in Schuylerville,
the Code Blue Shelter, the Quaker Springs United
Methodist Church, and a local business owner who
lost his garage and tools to a fire.
Over the past four years we’ve been blessed to be
able to help so many local agencies and groups.
And we’ve been blessed by so many donations.
And we’ve been blessed by all those people who do
the myriad jobs that make the Way a thriving
community service.
As Thanksgiving approaches, there’s a new bulletin
board at The Way. On the bulletin board, we’ve
asked our customers to trace their handprint, and
written on the palm what they are thankful for…
We invite each of you, this Thanksgiving, to trace
your handprint, and on it to write what you’re
thankful for …

Paul Griffen, Tim Lagoe, John Roby
and Bob Greenfeld for cleaning out the
drain in the sidewalk behind the church
backdoor and extending it into the lower
parking lot. This hasn’t been working for a
long time and with our monsoon fall this
year is great to have that all in working
order. It helps keep our basement dry.
The dedicated church members who
continue to provide an excellent coffee hour
for all of us to enjoy. It not only provides
us with very special treats and practically a
lunch but provides time for our members to
socialize and catch up with the
neighborhood news.
Paul Griffen for painting the area above the
church porch
Bob and Bonnie Greenfeld for their free
organic eggs. They have supplied many of
us all summer with fresh brown, green or
blue chicken eggs almost every week. A
very generous outreach to us all.
Linda Griffen for the very generous
donation of new seat cushions for all of the
chairs in our fellowship hall
Paul & Gini Griffen for not only donating
the material but also making the skirts for
the stainless steel tables and stairway
Paul & Gini Griffen for the donation of
white table cloths to be used for special
events in our fellowship hall
Paul Griffen for assembling, painting and
installing the fellowship cabinet made by
Ken Woodcock
Bonnie Greenfeld for the wonderful way
she keeps our church sign up to date
Tim Lagoe and Mike McLoughlin for
setting up communion

THANKS TO ALL WHO HELPED AT THE
OCTOBER CHURCH SUPPER
Once again the member of Quaker Springs church
came together to provide a wonderful pork dinner
for our October supper.
We earned just under $1,000 from this annual
money raiser. Church members who volunteered for
this effort were: our chefs-(Mike McLaughlin and
Linda Campbell), the Hailu Family (Yared, Barb,
Khail and Khail’s friend), Pastor John, Gail
Gerber, John and Sharon Roby; Paul and Gini
Griffen, Deb, Amanda and Tim Lagoe, Mary Jo
Michaud, Bonnie and Bob Greenfeld, Margaret
Nolan, Donna and Cliff Thomas, Peg Ormsby and
Dorothea Campbell.
All worked throughout both Friday and Saturday to
prepare , serve the dinner and clean up the newly
refurbished basement of the church after all the
patrons were served. These semiannual dinners are
a real boost to our church’s financial needs and help
pay for basic needs such as building maintenance
and fuel bills.
We appreciate all who came and supported our
supper when so many other organization in the area
are using this same method to help meet their
bills. Marion Craine
A special thank you to Linda Campbell for
organizing and running the Silent Auction at the
October dinner at QSUMC which raised a total of
$1000. A donation of half of the money was made
to Rebuilding Together of Saratoga and the other
half went to the Guatemala Mission Team Trip.
Pie Sale Success
The Revive and Thrive Committee would like to
extend our thanks to all who participated in our
recent pie sale. A total of 351 pies were sold which
resulted in a final profit of $1475. WOW!
I would also like to express a special word of thanks
to the pie pick up crew of Bill Lagoe, Tim Lagoe,
Laurie Griffen, Linda Campbell, Paul Griffen and
Gini Griffen, for not only joining me in the journey
to the orchard to box all the pies at 6:30 AM, but
also helping to fill the pie orders.
I would like to express my thanks and great
appreciation to Tena Flanders for volunteering to
come to QSUMC to pick up and deliver the pies to
SUMC.
My thanks to all of you who participated in our
fundraiser by selling, delivering or buying a pie.
Enjoy those pies!
