Party Lines
Steve Breen's "Party Lines: The
History, Art, and Politics of Edito-
rial Cartoons" examines political
cartoons, an art form that brings
awareness to political and social
issues. "Party Lines" shares over
five decades of cartoons created
during presidential election years,
from past races to 2016, through
multiple perspectives. Steve will
share his impressions of this year's
Presidential race and politics in
general.
Steve is a two-time winner of the
Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartoon-
ing (1998, 2009). He also writes
and illustrates picture books for
children.

Next Meeting
President John introduced two
new members: Steve Carlson, Realtor
with Woods Real Estate Services in Mis-
sion Hills, and Carlos Persichetti, who
proudly acclaimed his technology and
business solutions service company For-
ward Slope. Welcome to them both!
Chair of the Day, Budd Rubin, a
retired orthodontist to the stars such as
Diana Ross and Michael Jackson, appro-
priately gifted an electric toothbrush to the
Rotarian from the farthest distance, Alex-
ander Prosekin, from the Rotary club of
Vladivostok, Russia. Budd then intro-
duced Tracy Sundlun, head manager of
the 2016 Rio Olympic Track and Field
team and fellow San Diego Rotary mem-
ber.
Tracy entertained us with stories
of his sleepless but extremely proud role
in caring for the comfort and athletic
needs of the U.S. athletes and their indi-
vidual coaches and families. His Rio
FAQ list included: he did NOT get Zika
from being in Rio; yes, he met Michael
Phelps and Simone Baez; he got to hold a
gold medal; how supportive the U.S.
Olympic personnel was and so how it was
completely unnecessary for Brian Lochte
to have gotten into the trouble that he did;
and the thrill of the men’s 5000 meter race
when the disqualification was overturned,
allowing Paul Chelimo to receive the sil-
ver medal. Tracy then turned over the
podium to Meb Keflezighi with undis-
guised admiration, describing him as the
ultimate role model with a story far from
complete.
Meb was welcomed with a spon-
taneous standing ovation. “Dreams come
true”, he said, “by opportunity and persis-
tence.” He told of his father walking 125
miles through the wilds of Eritrea to free
his family with a bottle of water, a bag of
barley and a stick to defend himself. He
got to Italy, sending home money, and
worked so hard that 5 years later his boss
gave him 10 million Lira for the family to
come to the U.S.

Chair of the Day
President John opened the meet-
ing with a nod to the prominent
dais and welcomed birthday girl,
Linda Stirling. Linda delivered
the Inspirational Moment, speak-
ing on the responsibility of free-
dom, inspired by the play Hamil-
ton and a sermon by Dr. Timothy
Keller. After the Pledge and America the
Beautiful, led by Past President Peter Dun-
can and accompanied by Katie Fulhorst, the
news was delivered by Mark Burgess, cour-
tesy of Mike Rowan of Goodwill San Diego.
Reminding people that Goodwill provides
both items and job for people in need, he
countered the rise of the financial markets
with the closing of rest rooms downtown.
President John then encouraged members to
attend the District Rotary Gala on Saturday
November 5th, celebrating the 100th Anniver-
sary of The Rotary Foundation. He then in-
troduced Hernan Luis y Prado, who engaged
us with exciting news of the success of the
Workshops for Warriors, which serves veter-
ans in crisis and loss, who use their shared
experiences to help each other as they develop
skills. He reported that there are now 120+
graduates, and that WW is the only accredited
school of its kind in the nation! Members can
join the Grotarian tour of the Workshop for
Warriors site next Tuesday, Oct 18 (go to our
website for info).
Larry Hoeksema introduced the 10
students who attended a 2-week international
visit as part of the Rotary Youth Exchange.
Larry expressed a huge thank you to San Die-
go Rotary members and to Robert Price for
their support.
Past President Peter returned to the
podium, explaining that retirement of a U.S.
president earns an allowance and big security
detail, while retirement as the president of
Club 33 awards you the chair of our Club’s

They arrived here in 1987, with his father emphasiz-
ing education to his kids. Meb attended Roosevelt
Junior High knowing no English, but did a 5:20 in a
mile race where 6:15 was the time to beat, and
earned an A and a t-shirt. The teacher told him he’d
end up in the Olympics, but he had no idea what
that was. He won CIF California State Champion-
ships in 1994 for San Diego High School and be-
came a naturalized citizen of the U.S. in 1998, the
same year he graduated from UCLA, where he had
won 4 NCAA championships, and where he was
inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame. In
2004, he won the Olympic silver medal, but in
2008, he did not qualify for the team. In 2012, how-
ever, he won 4th in the London Olympics. He chose
to run his final Olympic marathon in the 2016, say-
ing he did it for his 3 young daughters. “Life is all
about challenges,” he told us, quoting again his fa-
ther who always told them, “Don’t waste this oppor-
tunity.”
To close out the meeting, President John
welcomed Meb as a San Diego Rotary member.
