AOS Horses Going Gang Busters

Welcome to our Auction of the Stars (AOS) July 25/26. We are always reinventing ourselves and this year we bring some new stallions to the performance arena and each stallion will auction off two service fees without reserve. This will mean some very cheap service fees to some sensational stallions.

AOS historically has a very clear record of presenting stallions that do go on to be Australian icons and who do have genetics to impact on our future. This focus on genetics and the fact that this consideration materialises into performance has, over the years, very much been an AOS thing! Without question we were before our time, however today these philosophies are clear for all to see and the top riders and those that are going to become top riders are very influenced by their evaluation of the genetics of the horses they are buying.

Leading out the charge of the stallion presentation is Regardez Moi, one of those young stallions presented many years ago with impeccable bloodlines. Today he is a legend in his own right, being the most winning Grand Prix stallion ever in Australian history. Although he is now 19 years of age he is also the reigning Australian Grand Prix Dressage Champion. This is the third time he has held this title!

This auction is full of young horses that are not necessarily going to be very expensive. Right now the Australian one day event champion is Don Skipcello with Murray Lamperd – Don Skipcello was sold through the auction as an unbroken two-year-old for $2600!! In actual fact for those of you who are prepared to do your homework, you will realise that horses sold at the auction do end up in hindsight being incredibly cheap.

The hype and the glamour and the requirement of on-the-spot decisions does make most people a little nervous. Understandable. As a result of this, it does take many of our buyers a second or third visit before they purchase. Also interesting to note is that a high percentage of our buyers are purchasing horses for the second or third time. Once people get over the pressure and different buying environment we do deliver and our buyers come back. Without question we go out of our way to be genuine and also to look after buyers after the fact.

Horses purchased through the auction who do return to the market in future days have a clear record of returning bigger prices than their original purchase price. People do instinctively think that at an auction everyone gets carried away and you end up paying more than the horse is worth. Honestly, when you think that everyone else is stupid and you are the only person in the world that is sensible then you know you are not being realistic. People at the auction have a good and guarded estimation of what they think a horse is worth. They are not stupid and simply stop bidding once a horse goes through their budget or exceeds their opinion of its valuation.

Check the records. Horses at the AOS represent wonderful value for money and more than any other single source we do produce horses who go on to perform outstandingly whether it be for local competitions and enjoyment or a rider with Olympic aspirations. Good Luck.

A MESSAGE FROM ANN-MAREE

NO EXCUSES NOW

Once upon a time, it was okay – and even believable – if a rider said they had no chance of being good at dressage.

Once upon a time, it was okay – and even believable – if a rider said they had no chance of ever riding at Grand Prix.

Once upon a time, a top dressage horse needed to be imported from Europe to have any potential, or it needed to be created using expensive, unreliable frozen semen, and only someone who was really ‘serious’ about riding would go there.

Once upon a time, Grand Prix was an unattainable, lofty height, a land of top hat and tails and amazingly difficult movements that few could hope to achieve. And only a handful of coaches around the country had the skills to get their students there.

Once upon a time, only a handful of horses at any given dressage competition had the ability to get to Grand Prix.

Those times are gone. There is no longer a lid on the jar. There is no limit to our aspirations.

I know of riders who have picked up cheap horses by being in the right place at the right time, horses that are genetically bred to do the Grand Prix movements. A client collected a green 6yo Byalee Romance mare out of a Falkland eventer for a few thousand dollars. Why shouldn’t it make Grand Prix? Byalee Romance was an AOS stallion that could really, really piaffe and passage and boasted a truly magnificent trot. His full brother Utopia Cardinal is Grand Prix with Heath Ryan today. But you can even breed a TB mare to a stallion with proven ability to create piaffe and passage for as little as $1000. My first Grand Prix horse? Back in the 90s, he was the product of a Ludendorf/TB cross, and Australia has come a long way since then. You don’t need a fortune. Money is no longer an excuse.

Why shouldn’t everyone aspire to ride at Grand Prix? Once it was a huge challenge. Barely a horse could piaffe, and training meant driving hours to find someone with half a clue, only to drive more hours to find a Grand Prix competition!

Now, we have the horses. In fact, we have so many horses that a basic lower-level horse with the genetics to compete at Grand Prix doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.

Now, a novice dressage class might boast 60% to 80% of its entries as potential Grand Prix candidates, depending on where and what the competition is.

Now, we have the coaches. Many of us have trained a number of Grand Prix dressage horses and geographically you don’t need to drive halfway across Australia to find someone who can help.

Now, we can do it. The only thing stopping us from being good is our history – we haven’t been good. It’s time for Australia to catch up with the rest of the world. We have the horses, the coaches, the skill and the enthusiasm.

DIRECTIONSIt is about one hour’s drive (plus traffic) from Sydney Airport to Horseworld Stadium. Set your GPS destination as the corner of Maguire and Janpieter roads, Marayla.

For the last part of your journey, turn off Windsor Rd at the the Vineyard Hotel onto Boundary Road.

When you reach Maguires Rd, turn right. At the T intersection, turn right into Janpieter Rd and you will see Horseworld Stadium up ahead.

This is one of the outstanding opportunities offered through the AOS selling program. We would encourage all riders who are slightly interested in the ridden horses to pluck up the courage to trial these horses in the official trialling times. Of course you are very welcome to trial these horses by prior arrangement in the weeks preceding the auction. Most people do suffer from the thought of riding in front of a crowd on the official trialling day. Our take on this is that if you are too embarrassed to look out for your own interests, then certainly nobody else will. Also, if you have dreams and ambitions, secret or otherwise, and being embarrassed is the biggest obstacle you have to overcome, then really life is not too bad. Realistically you will have to overcome much bigger obstacles than just being self-conscious or embarrassed. Get out there, trial these horses and take advantage of a great opportunity.

At the auction you do have the unique advantage of comparing one horse against the other. This comparison opportunity is exactly what happens in competition, one horse immediately compared against another, a phenomena which is very difficult to replicate when buying a horse privately. Riding is a passion discipline and in most instances when buying privately a prospective purchaser falls in love with a horse and buys it. In the auction situation, a prospective purchaser is much more likely to weigh up the pros and cons of each horse on a comparative basis. Of course, falling in love with the horse is a critical ingredient for success but we at the AOS would encourage you firstly to select your next horse on an intellectual level, then follow your heart and fall in love with the horse. We all know of people that have bought horses that didn’t turn out to be everything they had hoped for but nevertheless, love the horse and persevere even when it is clear they should sell and start again. Treat the auction trialling as a day at the office.

We encourage everyone to trial each horse that goes close to falling into their wish list category. Keep in mind that sometimes a horse that reads and looks mediocre in the catalogue actually turns out to be lots better in real life than you had expected. Conversely, some horses will catch your imagination in the catalogue, and then be disappointing in real life. Once you ride more than two horses you will lose track of details on each horse so we encourage you to write notes on each horse immediately after trialling them. Also, watching a horse being trialled by other riders is a great way of assessing honesty and rideability.

The first official trialling is at 1.10pm on Saturday 25th July and we would encourage all interested parties to take advantage of this Saturday trialling. This does give you as the potential buyer the opportunity to have another ride the next day Sunday 26th July at 8:00am. This also gives you enough time to research the horses and talk to the owners.

The basic format of trialling is that two or three horses come into the arena and are shown off for the first five minutes by their vendors, basically warming up and just gently running through the horse’s routine. Then people wishing to have a little sit are invited to come forward. Prospective buyers organise to trial a horse by approaching the AOS representative, who takes a list of names so as to keep the trialling ordered, and also signing the appropriate waivers. Each trialling is tailored to each rider’s individual needs, keeping in mind that the first and foremost priority is safety, and of course the well-being of the horse. It is a very hectic schedule with two sessions of public trialling plus the auction, all in two days, so horse welfare is a major consideration. We are of course very aware of also servicing the riders’ needs.

AOS goes to great lengths to ensure that we have the stallions with the best Grand Prix genetics in the world - this is one of them, and Byalee Briar is the only stallion in Australia by Bjorsells Briar 899 who is shaping up to be competitive and startlingly spectacular. Briar has had a quiet beginning to his career, but Ann-Maree has never given up on her vision and his schooling is now allowing those genetics and underlying talents to come to fruition. Rielly’ is an ISH stallion by US Grand Prix showjumper, Blue Diamond. Ridden by Harley Brown, he is a freak jumper, 16.3hh, black and stunning. Rielly has attracted attention from top-level eventers and showjumpers. How High Equestrian has had offers to buy him and a number of riders offering to take the ride on him. Gribaldi is famous for siring many Dutch Grand Prix dressage horses including Totilas, considered by many to be the best dressage horse the world has ever seen. Also back on Wimborne Constable’s dam line is Ludendorf, who to our knowledge is the only stallion ever to be long-listed for Australia or any other country in both eventing and dressage at the same time. McGuire is a stunning stallion, currently the highest-ranked eventing stallion in Australia. McGuire is a beautifully put-together Irish sporthorse by the talented Conqueror King, who also produced Cushavon Crackerjack, currently competing at three-star level. McGuire shows the bone and muscle of the Irish sporthorse, with a wonderful temperament that he throws to his progeny. His performance pedigree is underlined by the success of his dam side – the Zephyr line has produced many star performers including Highland Inspiration (3*) and Enchanted (4*) plus many others. McGuire started his competition career in 2009 with a 3rd at SEIC. He finished that year with a 2nd at the NSW State Championships at preliminary level. SR Trackerjack (Cracker) is purpose-bred by Chris Hopkins at Merriwa, NSW, to event and is already winning at intro level. Cracker has three nice paces, is steady and very trainable on the flat. He is lovely to sit on and is already schooling more advanced movements due to his fantastically trainable nature. He is also very bold over fences and is already easily jumping over 1m. He has had extensive cross-country schooling and is confident with arrowheads, water, ditches, etc. He has huge scope over fences and at the same time is careful with good technique. Cracker has also been out to several straight dressage days and has never come below second place, scoring between 68% and 73% on each occasion. He has regularly been out to jump clubs and is really confident and ready to step up and become a serious event horse. SR Trackerjack’s sire (Hopscotch) is by Croflea Artisan who is a famous NZ jumping line that has produced many successful eventers. On the dam line is Don Ramiro who is mainly known as a dressage sire, but has also influenced the bloodlines of several successful eventers such as William Wordsworth and Loxley who were both sold to Emily King (daughter of Mary King) in the UK, and also Don Panache campaigned by Stuart Tinney who was also sold overseas after a successful career in Australia. Fairy Floss, by Double Cream, has also made a huge contribution to eventing in Australia being on the dam side of Stirling Sprite who has produced many FEI level eventers (such as Hunter Hill, Adelaide Hill, Orchard Hill, Nottage Hill and Bonza Troy) as well as being a successful competition horse himself, jumping at World Cup level and eventing at 3* level. Byalee Gucci is one of the most powerful, majestic horses we have ever offered for sale. By an amazing black imported Dutch Fresian stallion, he appears to have inherited only his colour from his mother, his presence quite obviously courtesy of the sire. Gucci was broken-in almost two years ago and arrived at Byalee to continue his training six months ago. Brought back into work by a tiny 18yo rider, he has since been campaigned by Dimity Lourey. Gucci has never been unplaced, and is powering up the ranks, scoring more than 67% and 66% to place 2nd and 3rd in each of his official preliminary tests at last outing. At home, Gucci is training in the lateral work and has shown that he has a natural aptitude for flying changes, not suprising given his incredibly springy paces. We do feel that he will also be talented in the area of piaffe and passage, covering all of the difficult areas of the Grand Prix! Thanks to the people-friendly Gucci, a number of Byalee pupils who come just once a week have been able to have a sit and feel a top quality horse - all have walked away grinning from ear to ear. Gucci does appear to have all the makings of a top dressage horse!

She was an embryo transfer from Buckwell Park Gossip Girl, a multi-supreme champion in the show ring and now competing with enormous success in the dressage arena – she recently placed 4th in the 4yo Young Horse at Sydney CDI 2015 (with Robbie Soster). She is by talented imported young warmblood Highlight Australia (Judy Dierks) who won the PSG at Sydney CDI 2015. Jamaica’s sire is the imported pinto warmblood, What’s Colour (Andrew Buckley) who is by Samber, a Grand Prix dressage champion and the only coloured horse to be approved by the prestigious KWPN Studbook. What’s Colour himself is proving to be a talented dressage horse, being 2014 national advanced and Prix St Georges champion. Jamaica is a powerfully moving filly with three exceptional paces and a trainable attitude. She combines proven bloodlines through Donnerhall, Weltmeyer, Carbine and Souvenir (warmblood and Arabian warmblood). She can be registered warmblood and Arabian warmblood. Rufio R is a sensational bay colt by the three-time Australian Grand Prix Champion, Regardez Moi. Regardez Moi has won some 40 Grand Prix dressage competitions and is the most winning dressage stallion ever in Australian history. Rufio R’s dam Ella is by Jazz, and Jazz is one of the best dressage sires ever in the world. Jazz himself represented Holland as an international Grand Prix dressage horse at the 2002 WEG in Spain. Northern Charisma, the grand-dam of Rufio R, was also a dressage star and the Australian Grand Prix Dressage Champion ridden by Rachael Sanna. Northern Charisma, like Regardez Moi, also represented Australia in the World Cup Finals, which in 1999 was in Dortmund, Germany. A decade later, Regardez Moi represented Australia in Las Vegas at the World Cup Freestyle Finals. How amazing is that for both father and grandmother of Rufio R to represent Australia at the World Cup freestyle finals! Rufio R does represent the most amazing collection of dressage genetics. Rufio R has a great walk, a trot with spring and flair and a canter with softness, balance and roundness. Perhaps Rufio R’s most outstanding quality is his trainability. Rufio R’s full brother Rubio R sold as a weanling at AOS 2009 for $18,000. Suzi Q R is a very powerful moving young mare. She also carries some bloodlines that hint at great jumping. Her sire, Starnberg, was outstanding and trained at Ryans for two years. He responded magnificently and at the end of that time he could piaffe, passage and do one-time changes. He was outstanding. Starnberg is by Sir Donnerhall, by Sandro Hit – both are major contributors to the best horses in the dressage world. Interestingly, Rapunzel, who is the dam of Starnberg, represents some fascinating jumping lines. Suzi Q R is out of Rowena R by Regardez Moi who is a legend in Australian dressage being the current Australian dressage champion for the third time. Rowena R out of a Jive Magic mare, Jodi R, with Jive Magic being one of the most powerful Grand Prix horses Australia has ever seen. Jodi R is in turn out of the Salute mare Shakira R. Shakira R is by Salute, also the sire of Victory Salute who with Brett Parbery in the saddle came 9th in the world at the 2010 WEG dressage competition. Salute has produced international three-day eventers and World Cup showjumpers as well as Grand Prix dressage horses. Suzi Q R is a delicate or more refined type warmblood who will make up into a very pretty individual given some time and TLC. She does carry some significant dressage bloodlines and is really nice to be around. Just a nice person. Certainly we take her very seriously and feel that Grand Prix dressage is easily within her reach. Suzi Q R will make somebody very happy.

Revlon is a beautiful smaller elegant mare who is very light to ride and who has outstanding self carriage and balance. Revlon is quiet and really nice to be around. She is by Royal Hit, which goes back to Rubinstein out of TL Granata, which goes back to Belcam Glasgow. Revlon has indeed done quite a bit of jumping over lower fences. She is very agile and adjustable in front of the fences. Revlon is being schooled and campaigned by one of the girls, Shoshona, who works here at Ryans. Royal Hit has had a number of really beautiful youngsters who are only just now starting to hit their straps on the Australian competition scene at the higher levels. Revlon has a nice walk, a very soft trot which is elegant and light and a beautiful canter which again is light and easy to sit on. As a dressage horse Revlon has a real future. Shoshona who is currently schooling her comes from a successful showing background and feels that Revlon would also be very successful in the showing arena. Revlon does have a lot of “look at me” presence. At this stage Revlon has not been campaigned but is ready to go.

This is a collection of some very interesting bloodlines. Promise R is now competing Prix St Georges/Intermediate I level dressage. He does have the most amazing piaffe and passage. Promise R is by Prestige who competed on the Grand Prix circuit with Sheridyn Ashwood, and they were at times unbeatable. On the bottom side of Promise R is Flemmingh, who is one of the all-time Dutch greats in terms of dressage sires being the sire of Ling with Edward Gal, and Krack C with Anky van Grunsven. On the dam side, Si Joli is the dam of some really quality youngsters coming up through the ranks at the moment. Si Joli is by Salute (imp) who is the sire of some wonderful Grand Prix horses such as Victory Salute, Stirling Stilton and DP Christopher, also the number one eventing stallion in the world at one stage, Staccato. Salute is also dam sire of Mystery Whisper (London Olympics 2012). Kenare Holly, who is the grand-dam, is by Ludendorf, who simultaneously was Australian shortlisted for dressage and eventing, perhaps a feat that has never been done before or since. Pretty has a live foal guarantee to Wimborne Constable who is now winning pre-novice classes in eventing with Heath Ryan in the saddle. Wimborne Constable is by Contenda, a fabulous jumping stallion, out of a Gribaldi mare. Gribaldi is the sire of Totilas who sold for some AUD$22million to Germany.

The main arena is an internationally sized showjumping arena, 70 x 35, the second an international dressage arena with seating for 150. In all, there are 3 acres under cover to host everything from rodeos to showing. Even El Caballo Blanco has shown off its dancing horses under the Horseworld roof.
