Combined, there are an estimated 23,000 new cases of occupational cancer and COPD in California each year, with 6,500 deaths.

This turned out to be an incredible story, in that in a short amount of time, we found three individuals with debilitating hexane-induced PN here in the Bay Area, in an industry where it had never been seen before, automotive repair, and where the severity of symptoms among the affected workers were similar to what one sees among solvent-disabled workers in basic industries in China, for example. Professors Kathie Hammond and Michael Bates have proposed a study to characterize the full extent of hexane-induced neurological (and reproductive health) damage among workers in this industry. You can see some of our sampling equipment here, which produced data showing that (CLICK) This suggested to us that workers in some 6,000 shops across CA, (and maybe 60,000 across the U.S.), were using a uniquely neurotoxic substance under thoroughly uncontrolled conditions. We found that in this industry, there are no systems in place to prevent solvent vapors from reaching the worker, such as local exhaust ventilation, even respiratory protection, which would be impractical but at least temporarily protective. This slide is trying to illustrate that in using these products, solvent is applied and the worker performs his task, during which time the solvent evaporates into his face. Using data from the Air Resources Board, we found that over 5 million cans of brake cleaning solvent are used in CA repair shops each year.
