の原文付加における理由

Caxton の The History of Reynard the Fox を読んだときに、 OED2 の CD-ROM 版で The History of Reynard the Fox、以下『Caxton 狐物語』と呼ぶことにしますが、の引用をすべて取り出してみました。今日の私の報告は OED のこの引用をさまざまな点から観察した結果の報告であります。

OED における『Caxton 狐物語』からの引用は、423 例、うち ”a variety of forms” で引用されているのが 4 例、prefix が４例ですので、415 例と考えればよいでしょう。

OED が原典にしたものは、[●資料-01] Arber, Edward. 1878. The History of Reynard the Fox Translated and Printed by William Caxton June 1481 (English Scholar’s Library, I). London.

The Language of Caxton's Reynard the Fox. A Study in Historical English Syntax (Université de Gand: Recueil de Travaux publiés par la Faculté de Philosophie et Lettres, fasc. 26e. Ghent and London.で用いた版ですが、初刷と同じもののようです。Amazon で入手できました。

Caxton はこの『Caxton 狐物語』を中世オランダ語の散文訳から翻訳しました。この中世オランダ語版は、Gerard Leeu という印刷業者が 1479 年に Gouda という地で印刷したものです。その中世オランダ語版は、[●資料-01] Hellinga W. Gs. 1952 Van den Vos Reynaerde: I Teksten, diplomatisch uitgegeven naar de bronnen vdor het jaar 1500. Zwolle.Hellinga は、韻文訳と Leeu の印刷版の散文訳をパラレルで edition にしております。

OED が引用の原典にした Arber による edition は、綴りと Caxton の句読記号、punctuation marks はそのままにしながら、アルファベットを現代化したものです。ここで、参考のためにCaxton の初版をマイクロフィルムからコピーしたものと、Arber の edition の該当するところを画像で示します。マイクロフィルムは、[●資料-01] REYNARD THE FOX W. CAXTON B[ritish].M[usium]. REF. NO. C. 11. c.3

です。

OED は、この Arber 版を引用するにあたり punctuation marks を現代化しております。

OED2 on CD-ROM で、”quotation search” を遣い、author に Caxton、title に reynard を検索語にします。

すると一覧の中に1481 Caxton Reynard (Arb.) ... が Arber 版の引用であるのはわかりますが、1481 Caxton Reynard (1844) ...というものが 10 例出ております。

これは[●資料-01] Thoms, W. J. 1844. The History of Reynard the Fox, from the Edition printed by Caxton in 1481 (Percy Society, XII). London.からの引用です。この版は手に入れていないので、木村建夫先生の[●資料-01]木村建夫. 2001. 『ウィリアム・キャクストン訳「きつね物語」－中世イングランド動物ばなし』東京, 南雲堂.の記述を借りて説明いたします。

この、いわゆる、「トムス版は、当時の＜上品ぶる＞風潮の反映とでもいおうか、下品と思われる部分を削除または言い替えて」(p.267) います。さらに木村先生は「加筆された語」も指摘しています。

OED は、このトムス版を使う必要があったのかどうか－そこで、prefix の見出し語以外の９例をArber 版と比べてみます。

これら９例の Arber 版は Thoms 版と同じですから、OED がどうして Thoms 版をわざわざ原典にしたのか不明です。

ただ、『Caxton 狐物語』の最新の edition によると、[●資料-01] Blake, N. F. ed. 1970. The History of Reynard the Fox Translated from the Dutch Original by William Caxton. EETS.

But a return to Caxton’s original was made in 1844 when W. J. Thoms produced his edition of Reynard the Fox on Caxton’s text of 1481. Thoms’s text retained the original spelling, but had modernized punctuation. In general, the text is reliable. although the editor has made several emendations and improvements silently and has sometimes modernized the spelling. (p.xiii)

とありますから、text そのものは削除されているところは別にして信頼のおけるものでしょう。

また、OED2 on CD-ROM で、”quotation search” を遣い、author に Caxton、title に reynard the foxe を検索語にします。すると以下の１例が検索に出てきます。

[Blake 045/29]です。同じ語句は Arber 版にありますが p.47/34 にしかありませんし、Chapter も xix ですから、OED のこの引用の原典は私には何なのかわかりません。なお、この箇所は、OED sv. deuce (1) に、compound “deuce-ace” としても引用されていますが、そこには、[●資料-01] 1481 CAXTON Reynarod (Arb) 47 He was a pylgrym of deux aas [Fl. een pellegrym van doys aes].となっています。


出所不明のものをもう１つ紹介します。

A.b.(OED) Caxton Reynard K ij b, He wyste not what to saye buff ne baff.該当語句を Arber 版で見ると(Arber) /And that dered hym so moche that he wyste not what to saye buff ne hall/ [Blake 099/34]しかありませんが、”K ii b という chapter あるいはページは Arber にはありません。ところで Arber は、”buff ne hall” としてあります。マイクロフィルムで確認します。

Arber のこの読みは “Arber も Thoms もmisread” と言っています(p.138)。Blake は”GLOSSARY” で、見出し語では buff のところで baff をみよとしています(p.145)。 “not a single word” と付け加えております。ところが OED で headword “buff”, “baff” をみますと、つぎのとおりです。

OED と Arber 版の異同について、”cantus” があります。[●資料-01] sv. cantus Mus. PL. cantus [L.] A song or melody, especially ecclesiastical melody, also, the princial voice. Also attrib.(OED) [1481 CAXTON Reynard (1895) xxvii. 63 What wasit. prose of ryme. metre or verse..I trowe it was cantum. for I herde you synge.](Arber) I pray yow telle me what was wreton vnder the mares fote what was it. prose or ryme. metre or verse. I wold fayn knowe it. I trove it was cantum. for I herde you synge [Blake 059/28]

OED では “cantus” は Supplement vol. 1 で初めて採録されて今もそのまま採録されています。ただし “(1895)” は Arber の reprint 版（cf. 資料-の年です。

OED と Arber 版の異同について、”bouche” があります。[●資料-01] sv. bouche n(4) ?misprint for benche or boncke(OED) 39 Thise traytours .. ben now most preuy of counseyl aboute the kynge, and sytte by hym on the hye bouche.(Arber) / thise traytours ysegrym and bruyn / ben now most preuy of counseyl aboute the kynge / and sytte by hym on the hye bouche / [Blake 038/27](Gouda) Dese verraders ysegrim ende bruyn die sijn nv die heimelicste rade biden coninck ende si sitten bi hem ter hoger banc.

Blake は校注で “bouche” と示しながら、”benche” とします。

OED の “misprint for boncke” に従って、”text search” をしますと、sv. bank n(2) の定義 1. で boncke が、定義 2. A seat of justice,=BENCH . . . arch. or Obs. に ”baunk”(1275), ”banck”(1450) の用例があります。


MED sv. bench の同じ意義のところには boncke, baunk, banck の異綴りはみられません。

“high bench” (hye benche)は２カ所に出てきます。あと１つは[●資料-01] (Arber) and sette on the hye benche [Blake 085/22]

OED が ”misprint” か？としながら headword にしているものがもう１つあります。[●資料-01] sv. crutch v(2) Obs. Misprint or error for CRATCH, to scratch.15 Bruyn .. crutched [Flem. Crassede] with the hynder feet.

Sands は note 37 で、[●資料-01] (Sands, p.37) A word which may be a misprint on Caxton's part for the preterite of cratch (to scratch) and which is equivalent to crassede (scraped) of the Gouda edition.

Blake も注をつけており、『Caxton 狐物語』の中のすべての “cratched” が scratched の意味だと言っております。

また、OED2 on CD-ROM で、”quotation search” を遣い、author に Caxton、title に reynard the fox を検索語にします。すると 1894 Ellis Reynard the Fox と 1919 Masefield Reynard the Fox が会わせて 25 例出てきて最後に [●資料-01] sv. your(OED) 1481 Caxton Reynard the Fox 100 One .. whiche .. was your better and wiserがあり、これは(Arber) p.100/31 here hath ben one to day byfore yow whiche was to them ny[g]he of kyn. And was your better and wiserと、ページが一致しますから、これは明らかに Arber 版からの引用です。


ここでは、”quotation search” に工夫がいるという例も付け加えて報告いたしました。

ついでに、『Caxton 狐物語』の OED の引用と[●資料-01] Ellis, F. S. 1894. The History of Reynard the Fox. London. [A verse translation; reissued 1897].について触れておきます。なお Masefield の Reynard the Fox は『Caxton 狐物語』とはまったく関係のないものです。研究社『英米文学辞典第三版』によれば、「貴族階級の爽快な狐狩りを歌ったもの」 (p.1115)ということです。

たとえば、[●資料-01] sv forhunger （画像）

これを一見すると、”forhunger” は 1894 年でもって obsolete廃語と見えますが、実際は Caxton の使用例を最終例とみなければなりません。

Ellis の韻文翻訳の Reynard the Fox からの引用でこのようなものは“hove-dance”, “palster”, “slonk”, “wrive” がありますが、いずれも [ ] にいれてあります。

あるいは “wrive” のように、[●資料-01] sv. wrive （画像）

“[Hence. . .] としてあります。したがって、上に示した “forhunger” においても Ellis からの引用は [ ]に入れるべきであったでしょう。

Blake は、”Introduction 2. Dutch Loan-words in The History of Reynard the Fox” において、132 語を取り上げています。


“palster”, “slonk”, “wrive” についていずれも ”This is the only quotation under OED.” のように述べて、Ellis にはまったく言及しておりません。

C. 最終例を見るこれは OED が “obsolete” の label を付けている見出し語の話でした。そこで、最終例となっているもののうちいくつかを取り上げてみます。

MDutch と同じ語ですが、Arber は[●資料-01] Martin, E. 1874. Reinaert. Willems Gedicht van den Vos Reinaerde and die Umarbeitung and Fortsetzung Reinaerts Historie. Paderborn.を紹介するところで、MDutch を含む Low German について次のように言っています。

besides a fuller, though corresponding text, in verse, contains an excellent glossary, the mere perusal of which shows clearly how much nearer the Low German is related to the English than to the present German. For many of the words may be rightly guessed at offhand by an ordinary Englishman to whom the German equivalents would be quite unintelligible. (Arber ix)

これは成句 pray (someone) of a boon です。Arber は自らの校訂で [o] を補い、”boone” としています。Blake は appratusu criticus において触れていません。マイクロフィルムをみましょう。

OED では、1393 Gower Conf と 1440 Gesta Rom からの引用があり綴りはいずれも bone です。

もちろん OED の初出例と最終例については、antedating と postdting の問題がありますから、OED だけを根拠にするわけにはいきません。ただ OED に限っていえば、現在のパソコンのテキストファイル処理の技術で、すべての見出し語のすべての意義について、最終例を取り出すことは可能でしょう。

CD-ROM 版 OED の version3.1 はテキスト化ができるそうです。神戸大学の石川慎一郎先生が主宰している辞書学のメーリングリスト、通称 lex の 2007 年 9 月 7 日の投稿にあります。OED では、最終例のあとの文字列はアラビア数字、ローマ数字、ローマンアルファベット小文字、ギリシャ語アルファベットのそれぞれ限られたもの、及びこれらに付いている dagger だけですから、OED をテキストファイルにしておけば、最終例を取り出すことは可能なはずです。

D. 引用における省略

引用されたものをあげましたが、原典の該当箇所を省略したところは「 .. 」で示されております。しかし、引用例の語頭と文尾はどうなっているのでしょう。先に１つ例を示します。

省略を取り上げたのは、１つには次の理由があります。すなわち、語法などを通史的に研究する場合OED は唯一最大のコーパスとしてできます。こういう場合、単に quotation search の結果だけを取り出す場合、省略が思わぬ落とし穴になる可能性があります。ここに１つの例として、”see to it that節” という構文をみることにします。

このあとすぐの引用が[●資料-01] 1865 RUSKIN Sesame See to it that your train is of vassals whom you serve and feed, not merely of slaves who serve and feed you.

この ”see to it that節” について[●資料-01] 寺澤芳雄[編], 1997. 『英語語源辞典』研究社, 東京.「see to it that…「…するように取りはからう」は it を欠いた形で Caxton (1474) に見られる」(sv. see 2)

のような記述があります。そこで OED の text search で、検索語 “see to it” の検索をすると、[●資料-01] OED sv. unreprovable1634 SANDERSON Serm., See to it..that you walk orderly and unreproveably your selves.

の省略は原典に当たったほうが無難でしょう。『Caxton 狐物語』にはつぎのような文があります。[●資料-01]. . . that they sholde see to reynart that he escaped not. [Blake 031/31]

この文における “that” は “so that S V” と解釈できます。

この “see to (it) that ” を Blake は Dutch loan word と見なしています。まず、この構文の該当箇所を中世オランダ語版で見ておきます。

OED の引用の中の語句にに Gouda 版の該当語句を加えたものがあります。その理由を考えてみます。
