Types of Archetypal Journeys

No matter the hero, be he a warrior, savior, lover, or even an anti-hero, they all go on a quest, collectively known as the “Hero’s Journey.” They can fall into one or more categories.

The quest for identity The epic journey to find the promised land/to find the good city The quest for vengeance The warrior’s journey to save his people The search for love (to rescue the princess/damsel in distress) The journey in search of knowledge The tragic quest: penance or self-denial The fool’s errand The quest to rid the land of danger The grail quest (the quest for human perfection)

The Archetype in You!

We know that the archetypal pattern exists in myth and literature, but what about in our own lives? Have you ever struggled with an existing force (i.e. parents) to become your own person? Have you experience a loss of innocence by gaining knowledge about the world (i.e. the death of someone or something close to you)? Have you changed since entering high school (your clothes, friends, the way you speak)?

In three paragraphs, describe a time when your life has reflected at least one of the archetypes above.

Stages of a Hero’s Journey

Stage 1: Departure: The hero is called to adventure, although he is reluctant to accept.

Stage 2: Initiation: The hero crosses a threshold into a new, more dangerous world, gaining a more mature perspective.

Stage 3: The Road of Trials: The hero is given a supernatural aid, endures tests of strength, resourcefulness, and endurance.

Stage 4: The Innermost Cave: The hero descends into the innermost cave, an underworld, or some other place of great trial. Sometimes this place can be within the hero’s own mind. Because of this trial, the hero is reborn in some way—physically, emotionally, or spiritually. Through the experience, the hero changes internally.

Stage 5: Return and Reintegration with Society: The hero uses his new wisdom to restore fertility and order to the land.

What is a hero?

We have discussed characteristics and qualities that heroes have. Below, write at least three paragraphs about someone you consider a hero. Make sure to include the characteristics that make him or her a hero in your eyes, and to include the journey he or she has taken to become a hero to you.

Picking a sports hero or music star is fine; however you will be graded on how well you explain your choice. Make sure to include characteristics and qualities that make him or her a hero, and the journey that he or she has undergone to become a hero.

Finding a Hero’s Journey on the Primetime!

Take what we have learned about the Hero’s Journey and apply it to your favorite television show. While watching, consider how the primary characters go through stages, in some cases, more than once! Use the table below to report the stages, what challenges they faced, how they handled the difficulties, if someone helped them, and what was the lesson the “hero” learned by the experience. Make sure you use details from the show (consider that I might not have ever watched it and will need details to understand your explanation of the different stages).

A long, narrative poem, which may be divided into books and cantos. Epics are noted for their lofty, often heroic subject matter. Modern epics have as their models the ancient epics of Homer, the Iliad, and the Odyssey. Essential to the epic is the hero, who is usually of high social station but is nevertheless meant to embody both the happiness and suffering of all human beings. The hero is often at odds with the supernatural forces and beings that control his environment. In terms of narrative strategy, most epics begin "in media res," or in the middle of the action, and only later describe the events preceding the point at which the reader enters the story. - The World's Best Poetry

ELEMENTS OF AN EPIC POEM:

hero who displays many heroic characteristics beginning in media res (in the middle of things) flashbacks and foreshadowing a drastic turning point in the middle of the action repeated themes throughout poem epic poems begin with an "invocation to the muse," which is the author (or narrator)

asking one of the goddesses who watches over the arts to help him/her tell the story
