Welcome to the Land of the Fairy-tales!

In the heart of Denmark and the centre of the green Island of Funen Odense is situated. It is the native City of the fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen. It is the third largest city of Denmark with 185.000 inhabitants. With a history going back more than 1000 years, it is also one of the oldest cities in Denmark.

The year 2005 is the 200 year of the birth of Hans Christian Andersen. The writer which fairytales have been translated into 80 languages, will be celebrated with a lot of events during the year.

With this brochure Danish Swimming Federation proudly presents what the City of Odensecan offer regarding sporting- and leisure facilities as well as accommodation and the city itself.

The Danish Svimming Federation has hosted large competitions before. And Odense, as the Capital City of Danish Waterpolo has been chosen to host the European Master Polo Championships 2005. We will do our utmost to make your stay as comfortable as in any Fairy Tale.

Odense is a perfect city for hosting big events as :

Dear Sport friends,

Welcome to the Land of Fairy Tails!

It is with great pleasure that I am greeting you by the occasion of the third edition of the European Masters Water Polo Championships.

Five years ago, when LEN decided to organise European Championships for masters water polo players we were aware that as always by the time something new is implemented, there is a certain risk. We didn’t know, how it would be the response of the masters community playing the game, we had some uncertainty whether the Event will be a success.

Now, looking back the years and the two previous editions we can proudly confirm, that the Championships became a huge success, the number of participating teams is continuously growing and the feedback received is absolutely positive.

Without doubt the masters water polo players are taking their job very seriously.

It is with satisfaction, that for the third edition we are coming in a country, where water polo is under constant development. LEN and the Danish Swimming Federation have worked closely in the past years in many aspects to raise the standard of the discipline here, and specially the City of Odense has been always a perfect partner, organising countless LEN Water Polo Events over the recent seasons.

Naturally, to host a European Masters Water Polo Championships in Denmark and City of Odense is also a strong tool of development, as many past Olympic, World or European Champions and medallists will turn up in the University of South Denmark Swimming Pool. The true greats of this Sport!

Nevertheless, we don’t have to forget that the Championships are also part of a festive year, as the City is celebrating 200 years from the birth of the World’s famous fairy tale writer, Hans Christian Andersen.

In this respect, I am sure that you all will spend some marvellous time in Odense and Denmark, not only enjoying the Championships and the game itself, but also taking home unforgettable memories of celebration.

On behalf of the County Council of Funen it will be a great pleasure for me to welcome you to the European Master Polo Championship 2005 in Odense, Denmark.

The area of sports is very much prioritized by the County of Funen.Amongst many things we do in this area, we especially work on attracting big sport events to our island. First of all it makes it possible on close hand to experience sport in the absolute elite –some times world class – secondly it stimulates the interest for sports and exercise in all.

It is therefore a great pleasure to see that the Danish Swim Federation in association with Frem of Odense is chosen to be the host for this great competition in Odense on Funen.

Coming to Odense, I know that all citizens from the 23rd to the 28th of August 2005 will concentrate and focus on your play – of course, that will be the main purpose of your travel!

But when you get a break – and if the weather allows it – I hope you will look out and have the smell and sight of the nature of Odense and Funen, so you may discover how beautiful it is.

Welcome to European Master Polo Championships 2005, 23rd –28th august.

On behalf of the Municipality of Odense, I look forward to welcome the participants of the European Master Polo Championship 2005 here in Odense.

The city of Odense has during the last year played a strong role as host city for international sport events and I would like to welcome this European Championships for the water polo veterans.

We hope to be able to welcome the 25-30 best veteran teams in Europe from 23rd to 28th August 2005, together with officials, families and friends, and I am convinced that the local organisers and the Water Polo section under Danish Swimming Federation will do their outmost to make these championships a great experience for all.

It is my hope that you will have time to see and enjoy our city’s many offers, as museums, green parks, shopping streets, café life etc. in the native city of the famous fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen – or just simply come here to take part in the worldwide celebration of his 200 years birthday in 2005.

Funen is an island and therefore surrounded by water. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the beautiful beaches that Funen offers. Surf boards and boats are for hire or you can experience the many small islands of Funenfrom the deck of an old sailing ship.

Funen also offers great golf courses, tennis courts, bowling centres, fishing trips on cutters, or you can hire bikes and be lead through bike-friendly roads into the loveliest places of Southern Funen.

Many of the cities of Funen and the islands are charming old seafaring towns. Don’t miss the very special atmosphere when walking through crooked streets and lopsided houses in one of the small island villages where you have the impression that time stands still.

The City of Odense

The city of Odense is the shopping centre of Funen. There are specialised shops, major department stores and every Wednesday and Saturday a large area is transformed into a cosy market place.

When your feet are hurting you can always find a café or a small pub where you can sit down and relax a bit.

If you feel like going on until dawn at the city’s many bars, discotheques and music venues – or at the international Casino it is all up to you.

The Venue

The competition site of the 3rd European Masters Waterpolo Championships 2005 Odenseis The University of Southern Denmark’s swimming pool which can host about 600 spectators.

LEN in accordance with the Organising Committee will prepare practice and competition schedule for the event after the date of the draw. Competitions will take place in the indoor pool, which will be divided into two playing fields each with the dimensions of 23 x 20 m. Pools are equipped with electronic devices.

The pool has four different dressing rooms, each room will be named and the teams will get information which room to be used, the team managers can get keys for the lockers against deposit.

The University is situated 4 km from the city centre and can be reached within 10 minutes by public bus or the official transportation, which will be free of charge to any purchaser of the official European Master Water polo Championship package.

Waterpolo in Odense.

Odense is the Capital of Danish Waterpolo, as the City hosts three first division teams: FREM, OSK and OSLF.

OSLF was the first and only Danish team to qualify for Semi Finals in EEC. The first time was back in 1975, where the Venue were in Sibenik against competitors from: Yugoslavia, The Netherlands and Bulgaria. In 1979 OSLF again reached the Semi Finals. This time in Belgrade playing against teams from: Yugoslavia, Germany and The Netherlands.

The dominance of OSLF ended in 1987, where FREM took over and has dominated the arena of Danish waterpolo ever since. Since 1987 FREM have taken the Danish Championship Trophy except for two times. The club has participated in the European Club competitions every year – and have gained a lot of experience.

The last club in Odense, is the newcomers OSK. They won the Bronze Medals in 2004 and are aiming for more when the Final Games of the Danish Championships are to take place May 2005.

The most famous Danish Waterpolo player is Lasse Nørbæk, who played for SpandauBerlin for more than a decade, but now has ended his career.

Odense is one of Denmark’s best cities for culture, with a large number of exciting museums, sights and attractions on offer. The the best known of which is the Hans Christian Andersen Museum.

Buy an “Odense Adventure Pass” lasting 24 or 48 hours and experience Odense at fairy-tale prices. With the pass in your hands you will get free public transport within the Odense area and reduction on entrances to all the sights worth seeing in the area.

In Odense

The Hans Christian Andersen Museum and HouseA museum devoted to the writer of fairy-tales, Hans Christian Andersen. Apart from the museum section, which tells of the writer’s life, the museum also contains a large library, with Danish and foreign editions of his works, as well as a collection of illustrations and other pictorial art inspired by his writings.

The Carl Nielsen MuseumThe museum gives a detailed, chronologically constructed picture of the life and work of the composer Carl Nielsen, and of his wife, the sculptress Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen. The exhibition includes recordings of Carl Nielsen’s music.

Flower festivalFrom the 24th -28th

of August there will be at Flower festival in OdenseThe 2005 theme is the fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen. The city centre will be covered in flowers,

and there will be a lot of other activates that reflecting this years theme.

The Funen VillageThis open-air museum has more than 20 rural buildings from the 18th and 19th

centuries. Agriculture and cattle raising are practised in the village, using old methods. Each summer in July and August, there are performances of one of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy-tales on the lovely amphi-stage in the village. The actors are children, of course.

The Danish Railway MuseumScandinavia’s biggest Railway Museum is situated in Odense. Experience 150 years of railway and ferry history in authentic environments.

Odense ZooTotally renewed covering more than 87,000 square metres. Spend a day out experiencing animals of all sizes from all corners of the globe.

On FunenEgeskov Castle. An old castle from 1400 with a large park and a large collection of antique cars. The castle is the best preserved island fort in Europe and is built on a forest of oaken piles in a lake.

Regulations

The European Masters Water Polo Championships 2005, will be organised according to the regulations for EUROPEAN MASTERS WATER POLO CHAMPIONSHIPS(Update: 9th of May 2004) IN ADDITION TO THE LEN EVENT RULES .

MA-WP 1 ORGANISATIONMA-WP 1.4 Each participating club shall be financially responsible for all expenses for

accommodation and travel of their team(s) and the referee(s) nominated according to MA-WP 12.2.

MA-WP 2 EVENTS AND PARTICIPATIONMA-WP 2.1. Events are:

a) Men club teams;b) Women club teams.Women may be members of men’s teams.

MA-WP 2.2 Age groups are:a) 30 years and older for men and women;¹b) 35 years and older for men;²c) 40 years and older for men; ²d) 45 years and older for men; ²e) 50 years and older for men. ²f) 55 years and older for men. ²The age of the youngest member of the team shall determine the age group of the team.

MA-WP 2.3 Each Club may enter one (1) men’s team per age group and per club and one (1) women’s team per club.Clubs must be affiliated to the Federation approving the entry.A player may compete in only one (1) team.

MA-WP 2.4 Players shall be eligible for a club either affiliated to a Member Federation or affiliated to a Federation registered by LEN.However, players are not eligible in case they are included in the list of named entries for the European Club Cup Competitions (see Club 6.3.1³) as well:a) those having finished in the year of the Masters Championships asb) those beginning in the year of the Masters Championships (in case the list has already been submitted).

___________________________1) The Championship in this group will be held when there are three (3) or more teams entered.2) Only if there are three (3) or more teams entered into this group. Otherwise, these teams will

play in the next younger age group.3) Club 6.3.1: Named entries of players shall be sent to the Secretary of the LEN TWPC, with

copy to the LEN Office, no later than the date announced and circulated.The number of players entered is not restricted. The players shall be listed on the official form, comprising their name, surname and passport number. The list shall be signed by the President or Secretary of the Club and certified by the President or Secretary of the Federation to which the club is affiliated. The list of entered players may not be changed after the time limit for its submission.Clarification: The list may not be changed during the whole LEN Club Water Polo Seasonwhich means the whole period from the Qualifications up to the Finals in the respective LENClub Competition.

MA-WP 3 ENTRIESMA-WP 3.1 Preliminary Entries shall be sent to the organising Federation with a copy to

LEN Office. LEN General Event Rule E 14.4 will apply.The Preliminary Entries shall be signed by the President or by the Secretary of the club to which the team is affiliated and certified by the President or by the Secretary of the Federation to which the club is affiliated.

MA-WP 3.2 Named entries including signed Release of Liability by each player, shall be sent to the organising Federation with a copy to LEN Office listed on the official form, comprising name, surname and passport/identity card number of entered players; for each player two photos (passport size) shall be enclosed.Up to fifteen (15) players may be listed on the official form. Only thirteen (13) players out of the fifteen nominated are permitted to play in a match.The list of entered players can not be changed after the deadline for its submission.

MA-WP 3.3 Deadline for submission of Preliminary and Named entries shall be no later than the date circulated by the LEN Office.

MA-WP 4 ENTRY FEESMA-WP 4.1 The Entry Fees are different:

a) for a team with a referee;b) for a team without a referee.Entry fees shall be as decided by the LEN Bureau and circulated by the Organising Committee.

MA-WP 4.2 Entry fees shall be paid to the Organising Committee.Copy of bank transfer order shall be attached to the named entry forms.

MA-WP 4.3 There shall be no refund of entry fees.

MA-WP 5 DRAWSMA-WP 5.1 The draws will be held on a time and at a place circulated by the LEN

Office.

MA-WP 5.2 The LEN Office will circulate the results of the draws.

MA-WP 6 ACCREDITATIONMA-WP 6.1 The accreditation card for a player shall bear his/her photo.

MA-WP 6.2 Entered teams will receive accreditation free of charge for a maximum of three (3) team staff members and the players entered.

MA-WP 6.3 Any President of a LEN member Federation will receive accreditation free of charge.

MA-WP 6.4 Accreditation of approved referees is free of charge.

MA-WP 7 TECHNICAL MEETINGMA-WP 7.1 The Technical Meeting will be held one day prior to the start of the

Championships.The LEN Office will circulate information about time and place of the Technical Meeting.

MA-WP 7.2 At the Technical Meeting each team shall be represented by not more than two persons.Approved referees shall also be present.

MA-WP 7.3 Entered players shall be numbered one (1) to fifteen (15) andwear a cap with that number throughout the whole Championships.

MA-WP 7.4 The Technical Delegates shall check the personalidentification documents of the players and ensure that:a) the names of the players are in accordance with the list of entered players;b) the ages of the players are in accordance with the age group for which they are entered.Players which cannot present their personal identification documents corresponding to the list of entered players or which are not listed will not be eligible to play.

MA-WP 7.5 The names of the 13 players and the names of the coach and the officials to sit on the bench at a match shall be submitted to the LEN Technical Delegate in charge no later than one hour prior the match.

MA-WP 8 SYSTEM OF COMPETITIONSMA-WP 8.1 The distance between the goal lines will be minimum 23.5 meters and the

width of the field of play minimum 17 meters.

MA-WP 8.2 The system of competition in each age group is depending on the number of teams taking part. It shall be decided by the LEN MaC.Ranking matches shall be played for all places.

MA-WP 9 CLASSIFICATION

MA-WP 9.1 Scores and points at Preliminary RoundsMA-WP 9.1.1 Each victory shall count two (2) points for the winning team and each draw

one (1) point per team.

MA-WP 9.1.2 The final classification within a group shall be establishedaccording to the points gained by each team in all matches ofits group.

MA-WP 9.1.3 For each match in which a team is disqualified a goal score of 10:0 shall be awarded to the opposing team.

MA-WP 9.2 Equality of pointsMA-WP 9.2.1 In case of equality of points in a group between two teams the classification

shall be established as follows:a) Precedence shall be given to the team having won thematch between the two teams.b) In case this has been a tie, precedence shall be given to the team with the largest difference between goals scored for and against.c) If there is still a tie precedence shall be given to the team having scored the higher number of goals.d) If there is still equality, the classification of the teams shallbe decided by lot.

MA-WP 9.2.2 In case of equality of points is amongst more than two teams the classification shall be established as follows:a) Only points gained in those matches played amongst the teams with equal points shall be decisive.b) If there is still equality the classification shall be established according to the goal difference from only those matches played amongst the teams with equal points.c) If there is still equality the classification shall be established according to the highest number of goals scored in the matches played amongst the teams with equal pointsd) If there is still equality the classification shall be established according to the goal difference from all matches played in the group.e) If there is still equality the classification shall be decided by lot.

MA-WP 9.3 Matches to be played to a final resultMA-WP 9.3.1 In case a match is ending with a tie after the normal time, there shall be, after

an interval of five (5) minutes, two extra periods each of three minutes actual play with an interval of one (1) minute for the referees to change sides.

MA-WP 9.3.2 In case of further equality, the match shall continue with further extra periods each of three (3) minutes until a goal has been scored (Golden Goal)

MA-WP 10 EXCLUSION AND SUSPENSION OF PLAYERS AND TEAMSMA-WP 10.1 The LEN Code of Discipline shall apply.

MA-WP 10.2 Any member of a team excluded for brutality shall be suspended:a) in the first case for at least one (1) match;b) in any further case for at least three (3) matches.

MA-WP 10.3 A team forfeiting a match shall be excluded. Results achieved in that stage of the Championships shall be expunged.The Jury of Appeal may decide an exception if there is reason.

MA-WP 10.4 The LEN Delegate(s) may suspend a team in case:a) the Rules, Regulations and/or the instructions issued to all participating teams are not complied with by the team, orb) the financial liabilities in regard of the team are not fulfilled.

MA-WP 11 AWARDSMA-WP 11.1 Victory Ceremonies will take place after the conclusion of the

respective age group.

MA-WP 11.2 Members of teams ranking 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each age group shall be awarded with gold, silver and bronze medals in case they have played in at least one match.Members of teams ranking 1st to 8th in each age group shall beawarded with a diploma in case they have played in at leastone match.

MA-WP 12 OFFICIALSMA-WP 12.1 Each team shall enter at least one (1) qualified referee (see MA-WP 4.1). The

qualification of the referee shall be confirmed by the Federation, to which the club of the team is affiliated.Also Federations may enter qualified referees on their own costs.Referees shall be prepared to judge at least two (2) matches per day.Nominations shall be submitted to the LEN Office no later than the date circulated by the LEN Office.

MA-WP 12.2 The organising Federation shall provide at least 6 referees and all other officials.

MA-WP 12.3 Entered referees shall be approved by the LEN MaC.

MA-WP 12.4 For each match the Technical Delegates shall nominate the Technical Delegate in charge and the referees.

MA-WP 12.5 Acting referees may be evaluated.

I acknowledge that I am aware of the risk inherent in Masters Water Polo (training and competition) including possible permanent disability or death, and agree to assume all risk. I herby waive all rights to claim for loss and damages, arising out of my participation in Masters Waterpolo Events or any activities incidental thereto, against the Ligue Européenne de Natiaion (LEN) or any individuals participating in Masters Water Polo. In addition I agree to abide by and be governed by the rules of the Ligue Européenne de Natation (LEN). How to get here

By FlightThe city of Odense can be reached directly from Kastrup Airport (Copenhagen) by train. The journey takes 1 hour and 30 minutes. It is also possible to reach Odense from Billund Airport (situated in the southern part of Jutland). You will then have to take a bus/train or rent a car.

By TrainTrains leave from the capital of Copenhagen to Odense at close intervals. The journey takes 1 hour and 30 minutes.Many trains from Europe with destination Copenhagen stop in Odense as well.

By CarIf you come from Scandinavia or the northern part of Europe it would be a splendid idea to bring your own car. You could easily visit other parts of Denmark by car during your stay.
