“City on a Hill” The phrase “City on a Hill” taken from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, has been used by theologians to describe the calling of the Church since Christ first spoke the words as recorded in the fifth chapter of the Gospel of Matthew. The phrase has been used continuously in American politics to describe the calling of America to separate itself from the way the rest of the world governs and treats its people.

John F. Kennedy used the phrase when he said, “We must always consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill, the eyes of all people are upon us.”

Ronald Reagan in his farewell speech to the nation: “…I’ve spoken of the shining city all my political life, but I don’t know if I ever quite communicated what I saw when I said it. But in my mind it was a tall, proud city built on rocks stronger than oceans, wind-swept, God-blessed, and teeming with people of all kinds living in harmony and peace, a city with free ports that hummed with commerce and creativity, and if there had to be city walls, the walls had doors and the doors were open to anyone with the will and the heart to get here. That’s how I saw it and see it still...”

In 2006, then Senator Barack Obama addressed The University of Massachusetts with his own take on the idea “...But of course, America is an unlikely place - a country built on defiance of the odds; on a belief in the impossible. And I remind you of this because as you set out to live your own stories of success and achievement, it’s now your turn to help keep it this way. It’s your turn to keep this daringly radical but unfailingly simple notion of America alive - that no matter where you’re born or how much your parents have; no matter what you look like or what you believe in, you can still rise to become whatever you want; still go on to achieve great things…”

Presidential candidate, Dr. Ben Carson recently said, “Here’s a nation, one of the founding pillars was freedom of speech and freedom of expression. And yet, we have imposed upon people restrictions on what they can say, on what they can think. And the media is the largest proponent of this, crucifying people who say things really quite innocently.”

In the song “City on the Hill,” recorded by Casting Crowns, the lyrics challenge us to recognize the importance of the individuality and differences that make a community. The success of a city is accomplished only through the appreciation and support of the differences that make up the city.

The City of Memphis is built on the bluffs above the Mississippi River, but it can only truly stand out if we its citizens appreciate each other and what we have. I am grateful that these past several years our city seems to be embracing and enjoying the greatness of our history and unique culture. There is a real sense in our city that we are on the verge of a changing attitude about ourselves. The lyrics from the song below should serve as blueprint for success and warning of how not fail.

The Orpheum Theatre held their 21st Annual Art Sale as a celebration of the local creative community. Artists gathered on the iconic stage with their original works on display and offered for sale. In addition to the sale, the Orpheum’s own newest art installation “Orpheus Ascending” was unveiled in the Grand Lobby of the theater. On a late afternoon, mid-week, we settled into a somewhat quiet two-top in the elevated, low-ceilinged VIP section, stage right at B.B. King’s Blues Club. In a bit of serendipity, our Lamar Sorrento table is boldly painted with the word “Memphis” where Memphis Jones and I take our seats. An exuberant performing personality, he is spreading Memphis gospel and music lore to the world in a niche he invented simply being Memphis Jones.

When he slips on his hat and spats and takes the microphone, Memphis Jones is one of the most vocal cheerleaders and frontline promoters for our city. He performs weekly on Beale Street with his band, and they bring a popular blend of trivia and Memphis music - “infotainment” - that is energetic and entertaining. At the tourist hotspots of Hard Rock Cafe and B.B. King’s, Memphis Jones, the man and his band, showcase Memphis music to visitors who come to our music mecca. “I am in the company of people who love music, and they have been saving for years and planning to come all the way from wherever, all the way to Memphis, this little town, with one street in downtown because the music was calling them home. I’m that way too.”

“I love this city,” Memphis continues in a passionate cadence, “I love this city because it’s viewed as an underdog. Nashville kind of jumped out ahead of us as an industry home, LA is LA, New York is New York, and we got this terrible curse in the late ‘60s when Dr. King was murdered here. And I love underdogs.” When he says the word “love,” his baritone voice oozes with a warmth and you know he means it. And he says it often when talking about his work and his city, after all it is his namesake. “I love to encourage underdogs, and it’s just a super-duper added bonus that all these building blocks of modern pop culture all come from Memphis, Tennessee. The looks, the sounds, the vernacular, there is no such thing as ‘cool’ without Memphis, Tennessee.”

It seems that Memphis has been training for this career all his life when he began collecting rock-and-roll trivia at the tender age of six years old, enamoured by the band KISS. His older brother taught him to read before kindergarten, and he would wait on the magazine aisle while his mom grocery shopped, reading about his bands. “I’d be on the magazine aisle reading CREEM, Teen Beat, and Tiger Beat to find out about my bands. That lead me to the Beatles, and then even before Elvis, that lead me to Carl Perkins.” Music trivia is woven into his casual conversation as easily as it is his stage performances. “George Harrison’s stage name was ‘Carl Harrison’ because he loved Carl Perkins so much. Ringo Starr said the backbeat of Beatles music was inspired by J.M. Van Eaton’s inability to

play a shuffle on ‘Great Balls of Fire’ by Jerry Lee Lewis. I came upon this knowledge that my backyard is ground zero as far as the rest world is concerned. If the musical universe has a center, it’s here.”

With his encyclopaedic knowledge of music trivia coupled with his talent on keyboard and guitar, he formed a trio, using his same unique moniker “Memphis Jones” for his band name. The bass player is Mike Stoker. Friends since they were 12 years old, Mike and Memphis have collected trivia about artists and songs that now is being shared every time they take the stage. Kirk Barkley completes the band behind the drum kit. All three are independent musician entrepreneurs making a living in the music world of Memphis. Mike works as a luthier, and he and Kirk both work as independent musicians too. Memphis describes his choice of bandmates as “men with a local footprint and international reach because the people we are really here to entertain are not the locals. They are Scots, and Australians, and from the Far East.”

Like his bandmates, Memphis Jones has crafted other business interests that capitalize on his music knowledge and passions. He leads tours for the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau; he runs segments of social media for Tupelo and Tunica, Mississippi, promoting the music heritage of those areas; he works with Graceland posting daily video updates during Elvis Week; he’s the annual host and emcee for the enormous Collingwood Elvis Festival in Collingwood, Ontario; and he serves as the Worship Pastor at The Love of Christ Church. It is his pastoral work that is the heart of all that Memphis does. He plans his touring schedule to be home for church on Sunday morning, and on his website, the “CCM” tab is ironically in the middle of all the other tabs. A click recounts his work in Contemporary Christian Music with pioneer and mentor, the late Dana Key, and reveals another facet of Memphis Jones as artist and “encourager” of people. As Worship Pastor, he works with the musicians in the flock to develop their excellence, and then sends them out to lead and encourage others beyond the walls of The Love of Christ Church.

A self-described “family man,” Memphis’ wife, Heather, serves as the perfect counter-balance to his rock-and-roll musician persona. They work together as a team, and she helps him with his business as he helps her with family matters to include homeschooling their young children. In addition to working with her own children, Heather is a founder and director of Community, a homeschool tutoring resource (CommunityHomeschoolClasses.com), and both Jones’ are active in the homeschool community. Memphis is quick to point out that he “didn’t fit that system” of the traditional school environment, even making a “D” in music. Instead, he was known around the halls of his alma mater Raleigh-Egypt High School as “Rock Trivia Jones.”

He explains that he is a clown, makes people laugh, and engages and encourages people, but other than that, his says his skill sets are “pretty slim.” But for anyone who has experienced Memphis Jones, he is maximizing that skill set and doing exactly what he has been called to do. “At the end of my two hour show, every single person within earshot is an expert in the lore of Memphis music. That’s my goal is to send out disciples. I’m a disciple-maker who says ‘You gotta go to Memphis! You gotta go to Stax! You gotta go to Graceland!’ You don’t even know why you love that Elvis record until you see his kitchen and realize that he was a human after all.”

On Beale Street, Memphis Jones gets ready to take the stage at B.B. King’s on the iconic street where he is both honored and humbled to play. “I realized that it’s about 1% of my performance, and 99% about making sure that every single heart is overflowing with a love of the music that brought them here. Every song that you know and love has roots that either come to or grow through Beale Street. Beale Street touches every corner of music.” As for Memphis Jones, he opens his show with the familiar bars of a classic Memphis tune and sets about his nightly gig of touching hearts with his own special brand of Memphis.

Delta Blues Winery unveiled its first in a series of Memphis Legends wine labels to honor our great Memphis musicians. The first honoree was Wayne Jackson of the Memphis Horns. Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell was on hand to issue a Wayne Jackson Day proclamation, and also presented Wayne with a key to Shelby County. Shelby County Historian, Jimmy Ogle shared the significance of the Memphis Horns in creating what is now known around the world as the “Memphis sound.” The second label honoree will be Wayne’s Memphis Horns partner, Andrew Love in another special Sunday event on November 15th at Delta Blues Winery.

urkeyT R O T T E R STIn 1998, the day after Thanksgiving, Robert “Punch” Pearson decided to teach his

daughters the lost art of being grateful. In modern society, people can sometimes forget to be appreciative. One often hears grumblings about politics, religion, and finances. With trends constantly evolving, keeping up with the Jones’ has become a full-contact sport. Therefore, Punch wanted his girls to not only be thankful for what they have, but to be gracious in honor of how God had blessed them. So that day, he loaded the girls and two friends up and drove downtown to the Cook Convention Center to hand out meals to the less fortunate. That day, Punch had a lightbulb moment. “I want my children and others to truly understand the meaning of Thanksgiving by meeting and helping those less fortunate,” he notoriously said. Years later, his loved ones have immortalized that selfless sentiment in an organization called Turkey Trotters.

Giving back had always felt good for Punch. However, he had a breakthrough realization that day after Thanksgiving 17 years ago: yes, the people that were lining up to receive food were in need. However, they were able to ask for and go get their meals themselves. What about the family that had someone suffer from a major illness and has taken on major debt from medical expenses? What about the elderly that live alone and get lost in the shuffle? What about the single parent family that scrapes by? In other words, what about the people who really need the help who have not asked for a handout? That group is to whom Punch wanted to minister.

By Thanksgiving the following year, Punch had rounded up his family and friends as volunteers. Punch worked at Piggly Wiggly as a Butcher Supervisor, so he was able to secure food vendors to donate to the cause. The mayor’s office sent the group a list of 18 families that were in need of a Thanksgiving meal, so the group went to work on organizing a turkey, a green bean casserole, dressing, sweet potato casserole, rolls, two pies, and soft drinks. The night before that Thanksgiving in 1999, ten volunteers met the night before at Flashback Vintage’s parking lot and got their assignments. The next morning, the group met at 7 AM at the Piggly Wiggly on Madison, loaded up, and set out to feed the families. They dubbed themselves “Turkey Trotters,” and they found the experience so rewarding that they immediately began to plan for the next year.

In 2002, Punch passed away, leaving behind his passion for helping others as inspiration to his friends and family. His sudden death served as motivation to continue his legacy. Without Punch’s vendor connections, the group has had to raise funds for food costs. Punch was always the avid golfer, so the Turkey Trotters started a memorial golf tournament, and 100 percent of the proceeds go directly to feeding the families in need. Now, in its 11th year, the Turkey Trotters Golf Tournament (held the first Sunday in October) is dubbed by many as the “most fun golf tournament in town.” Every sponsor, golfer and donor involved in the tournament contributes to the cause, and because of the tournament’s success, Turkey Trotters has grown into over

100 volunteers strong: just the way Punch would have it.

Now, Turkey Trotters delivers the same full Thanksgiving meal, in addition to fruit, candy and non-perishables, to approximately 140 families in need in Shelby County. However, in honoring Punch’s wish to reach those who are truly in need, the families list served by Turkey Trotters is compiled by inquiries to churches, school guidance counselors, and religious ministries. No one on the list is self-nominated. “We even take the names of people suggesting other families that have fallen on a hard time that year. We want to help those who really need the help, not someone who calls and says ‘I need my Thanksgiving turkey again this year,’” says Dennie Rodgers, Punch’s sister and long-time Turkey Trotter.

Turkey Trotters needs volunteers and funds in order to grow. They will meet at 7:30 AM at Sidecar Café for coffee, breakfast, and delivery lists. The volunteers will be finshed by 10 AM in ample time to enjoy their family Thanksgiving. However, the early morning volunteer experience is what makes Turkey Trotters special; Don Pearson, Punch’s father,

recalls several instances where families are so overwhelmed with gratitude that the volunteers are invited into the home to pray with the family. Happy tears are shed, because since these families do not nominate themselves, the humble reverence of the situation is overwhelming. Every year the organization gets letters of deep appreciation and gratitude. And that is why every year, the number of volunteers double.

Operation Red ShoeComes to Memphis

Friends of cancer survivor Mckendree Walker welcomed employees of Zappos who came to Memphis to tour St Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The employees had formed a team that won an internal competition to create a video that describes the unique customer relationship Zappos has with its customers. The video became a nationally-aired commercial. The team went on to reach out in a special way to a Zappos customer; Mckendree Walker

along with 13 of her friends and family flew to Zappos headquarters for a dinner celebrating the life of former St. Jude patient Luis Aguilar who lost his battle with cancer February 14th, 2015. Operation Red Shoes was launched by this team as way to continue the spirit of Luis who was constant

presence of joy and encouragement in the life of his fellow St. Jude patients. Luis’ signature red shoes were a constant in his daily visits to the hospital.

The 2nd edition of the Literacy Mid-South Book Festival kicked off with the Well-Read Reception: A VIP Event for Avid Readers at the Playhouse on the Square. The Reception was a sold-out party that gave literary fans the opportunity to meet and mingle with the likes of Mark Greaney, Beth Ann Fennelly and Tom Franklin, and Eric Jerome Dickey, just to drop a few names of the well-known authors on hand. Dixon Gallery and Gardens tapped into the brew connoisseurs in town for the Art on Tap party on a perfect mid-September Friday evening. This is the 20th year for the event featuring the finest in craft beers in Memphis and beyond. The Mason Jar Fireflies provided the live music, and local restaurants served delicious fare coupled with the unlimited beer samplings. The Jun Kaneko outdoor sculpture exhibit throughout the beautiful Dixon grounds created the ultimate artsy backdrop for this tasting party. Italian Deviled EggsIngredients:6 Eggs1 oz Grey Poupon 2 oz Mayonnaise

1 Tbl Capers½ bunch Green onion chivesSalt and pepper to taste

Place eggs in saucepan large enough to hold them in single layer. Add cold water to cover eggs by 1 inch. Heat over high heat just to boiling. Remove

from burner. Cover pan and drain immediately. Cool completely under cold running water or in bowl of ice water, then refrigerate.

Once eggs are completely cooled, peel off shell and then carefully cut eggs lengthwise in half. Separate out yolks carefully and put in separate bowl. In that bowl, add Grey Poupon, mayonnaise, capers, chives and salt and pepper. Mix well. Next, scoop mixture back into egg white shells and serve chilled!

Barbequed Half Chicken Dry Rib Rub Ingredients1 Tbl Cumin1 Tbl Paprika1 Tbl Garlic, granulated1 Tbl Onion powder1 Tbl Chili powder

2 Tbl Kosher salt1 Tbl Brown sugar1/3 Tbl Cayenne pepper1/3 Tbl Black pepper1/3 Tbl White pepper

Mix all ingredients together with your hands in bowl. Take a half chicken and rub with dry rub. Place rubbed chicken in plastic wrap and let sit 3 hours or overnight. Unwrap chicken and place on a smoker at 250 degrees for 2 ½ to 3 hours, cooking on indirect heat. Before taking chicken off grill, brush with mild BBQ sauce (Central BBQ Mild) and let cook 15 more minutes. Serve hot and enjoy!

Sweet Tea Brined & Peach Glazed Pork PorterhouseFor the Sweet Tea Brine2 Qts Sweet tea, brewed 2 Qts Smoke brine

1 C Molasses1 C Dark brown sugar

In a large pot over high heat, add sweet tea and smoke brine. Stir with a wire whip and bring to a boil. Add molasses and brown sugar. Stir until sugar and molasses in completely dissolved. Pour into a large pan and place into ice bath to cool.Marinate pork porterhouse in Sweet Tea Brine for 8 hours before grilling.

For the Southern Comfort Peach Glaze2 ½ C Southern Comfort liquor 2 ½ C Peach Monin syrup 1 ¼ C Sweet and Spicy Tangy BBQ sauce 1 ¼ C Hickory BBQ Sauce

4 Tbl Molasses 4 Tbl Corn starch 4 Tbl Water

Place Southern Comfort into a heavy stock pot over medium. Reduce liquor by half. Add peach Monin syrup, tangy bbq, and hickory bbq sauce and mix with whip. Add molasses and stir until fully incorporated. In a stainless steel mixing bowl, add corn starch and water. Mix with whip to form a slurry. Add slurry to sauce to thicken. Mix with whip until sauce has thickened. Remove from heat and cool.

For the Porterhouse:Remove pork from Sweet Tea Brine after the 8 hours of marinating. Brush each side of pork with salad oil and season with a BBQ rub. Place season side down on 500 degree broiler. Cook to form diamond marks and baste with half of Southern Comfort Peach Glaze. Turn over and cook to form diamond marks. Remove from broiler and baste pork with other half of glaze. Top with a peach compote and enjoy pork porterhouse with marbled mashed potatoes and succotash.

Lake Farm’s Blackened Catfish over Jalapeno Mac & CheeseFor the Catfish7 Catfish filets, 9 oz each

For the Blackening Rub2 Tbl of paprika½ Tbl of thyme½ Tbl Black pepper, ground½ Tbl Rosemary1 Tbl White pepper, ground

½ Tbl Basil, dried1 Tbl Cayenne pepper½ Tbl Oregano, dried1 Tbl Onion powder2 Bay leaves, crushed

Mix all ingredients together in a ziplock bag and shake vigorously until mixed evenly throughout. Fully cover the filets of catfish in the blackening rub. Heat a large skillet on high with 1 Tbl of oil per fish filet. When oil begins to smoke, remove from heat and GENTLY lay your fish in, moving just enough to ensure that there is oil underneath all parts of the fish. Return to medium heat. Let cook until about 70% done on the blackened side, and then CAREFULLY flip over your filets. Let cook for another 2 or 3 minutes then take out of a pan & place on a paper towel to remove excess oil.

For the Jalapeno Mac & Cheese1 Jalapeno1 oz Butter2 C Heavy cream1 lb Smoked gouda cheese, grated

1 Tbl White pepper, ground2 Tbl Kosher salt10 oz Dry pasta of your choice

Boil a pot of water for your pasta, and cook this at the same time you cook your Gouda Sauce. Split, and then de-seed the Jalapeno. Place in a large sauce pan with the butter and sauté until it changes color. Add the heavy cream and bring to a boil. After the cream reaches a boil, turn off heat and add grated cheese and salt and pepper. Stir with a sturdy whisk until the cheese is totally melted and smooth. Add this sauce to your freshly cooked and drained pasta. Serve as a side to the catfish and enjoy!

SALUD! COOKING SCHOOL at WHOLE FOODS MARKET

Pumpkin Spice Biscuits (Makes 8 biscuits)

1 ½ C All-purpose flour1 Tbl Baking powder1 Tbl Light brown sugar½ Tsp Salt1/3 Tsp Cinnamon

1/8 Tsp Ground allspice5 Tbl Butter, cold, cut into pieces¾ C Pumpkin puree½ C Milk

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Line a baking sheet with 2 layers of parchment paper or a silicone liner. Whisk flour, baking powder, brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, and allspice in a medium bowl. Work the butter in with fingertips, until mixture resembles coarse meal. Combine the pumpkin puree and milk and stir into the flour mixture; dough will be moist. Gently press out the dough into a rectangle about 1/2”thich and fold into thirds like a business letter. Turn and repeat. Pat dough out into an 8x5-inch rectangle, about ¾” thick. Using a 2- to 3-inch round biscuit cutter, cut out biscuits and place on prepared baking sheet. Press dough scraps together and cut out additional biscuits. Bake in middle of oven until lightly browned, about 15 minutes. Cool slightly on a rack; serve warm with Apple Cinnamon Butter.

Apple Cinnamon Butter(Makes about ½ cup)

1 stick unsalted butter, softened1 Tbl Sugar, or to taste

½ Tbl Cinnamon½ C Dried apple rings, chopped

Place all ingredients in a food processor and process until smooth. Adjust sugar as needed to taste.

Fried Catfish PlateFor the Catfish2 Catfish pieces, 8 oz each1 pint Buttermilk½ C Cornmeal

1 C Crisco or canola oil for frying

Place two 8 oz. pieces of catfish into butter milk then cover with cornmeal. Fry at 350 for approximately 5 minutes or until golden brown.

For the Mac ‘n’ Cheese1 C Macaroni noodles½ can Cheddar cheese sauce

4 Tbl salt1 C heavy cream

Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add macaroni noodles. Let them simmer until soft and then drain. Add cheese sauce, heavy cream, and salt, mixing well. Serve on the side. Also good with turnip greens and tartar sauce!

Eggplant Royale For the Eggplant:1 Eggplant peeled and sliced into discs½ C Panko crumbs

Bread eggplant in panko, and fry eggplant until golden in color and set aside.

For the Sweet Corn Sauté: 1 gal corn kernels roasted in oven (8 minutes)2 cups diced red onion1 quart diced roasted red peppers, rinsed well in cold water2 T minced garlic

2 c sliced scallions1 c cider vinegar3 T red pepper flakesSalt and pepper to taste

Add vinegar together in a large mixing bowl with all other ingredients. Toss to mix well. Sauté your sweet corn mixture until hot. Place corn sauté on plate and add fried eggplant on top.

For the White Truffle Aioli:1 c egg yolks (approximately 14 yolks)½ c lemon juice½ c cider vinegar¾ c white truffle oil

1 quart olive oilSalt and white pepper to taste1 c water

Place egg yolks, lemon juice, cider vinegar, and roasted garlic in the bowl of the food processor and blend at high speed. Slowly add the oil in a steady stream. Season with salt and pepper. Add water until the aioli is loose enough to come out of a squirt bottle but not runny. Spread truffle aioli across the top and serve.

Quail & DumplingsFor the Quail4 Whole quail1 Tbl Olive oil8 C Water2 Tbl Chicken base3 Celery stalks, chopped3 Carrots, chopped 1 Yellow onion, chopped 1 Bay leaf

1 tsp Paprika2 Sprigs thyme ½ Tbl Black pepper 8 Tbl Butter2/3 C Flour½ C Heavy cream Kosher salt and black pepper to taste

For the Dumplings1 ¼ C Flour2 tsp Baking powder ½ tsp Salt

2 T Butter½ C Milk

Mix dry ingredients of dumplings with milk and butter in a mixing bowl. On a floured board, knead dough slightly. This is loose dough, and if overworked the dumplings will be tough. Roll dough with a rolling pin until 1/8 inches thick. Cut dough into strips, about 1” × 3”.

In a large pot, bring 8 C water to a boil. Once boiling, add chicken base, bay leaf and vegetables and cook 8 to 10 minutes. While vegetables cook, melt 8 T butter in a saucepan. Once melted, add 2/3 flour and whisk to create a roux. Cook roux 30 seconds stirring frequently, then add to chicken stock to thicken. Add heavy cream, paprika, black pepper and thyme, and return to a boil. Add dumplings one at a time, stir, reduce heat to a simmer, cover and cook 8 to 10 minutes.

While dumplings cookCover the bottom of a saute pan with olive oil and set over medium high heat. Season quail with salt and pepper. Once hot, carefully lay quail into pan and cook 1 or 2 minutes, or until slightly browned. Flip quail over and transfer pan to a 350° oven for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool briefly. Remove meat from the bones of 2 quail, and add to stock. Reserve other 2 quail for garnish.

Unfried Southern ChickenFor the Chicken4 pieces of 5-6 oz Boneless skinless chicken breastsFlatten the raw chicken to ½ inch by covering breasts with plastic wrap and

pounding with a meat tenderizer.

For the Breading10 oz Panko bread crumbs 2 oz Parmesan cheese1 Tbl Seasoning salt½ tsp Smoked paprika ½ tsp Cayenne pepper

½ tsp Black pepper½ tsp Onion powderMix thoroughly and store in an air tight

container.

For the Spicy Buttermilk Marinade1 Qt Buttermilk 4 oz Hot sauce

Marinade chicken breasts in spicy buttermilk overnight. Remove chicken from spicy buttermilk, and place ½ of the breading mix in a bowl and bread chicken, turning to cover both sides. Push down firmly fully covering the chicken. Tap off excess crumbs. Discard any leftover bread crumb mix that has been in contact with raw chicken. Transfer to parchment lined sheet pan and spray with olive oil on both sides. Bake at 375 for 20-25 minutes or until cooked thru.

Fried Quail & Cornbread For the Quail2 C All-purpose flour1 dash Sugar1 dash Cayenne pepper

1 dash Grated nutmegSalt and ground white pepper to taste1 C Buttermilk

Place whole quail in buttermilk for 30 minutes. Mix first 5 ingredients together and set aside. Transfer brined quail into mixture and bread lightly. Fry at 350 until cooked through.

For the Cornbread½ C Unsalted butter2/3 C White sugar2 Large eggs1 C Buttermilk

½ tsp baking soda 1 C All-purpose flour½ C CornmealSalt and ground white pepper to taste

Melt butter in large skillet. Remove from heat and stir in sugar. Quickly add eggs and beat until well blended. Combine buttermilk with baking soda and stir into mixture in pan. Stir in cornmeal, flour, and salt until well blended and few lumps remain. Pour batter into the prepared pan. Bake at 375 for 30 minutes.

The hugely popular, Rock For Love is a Labor Day weekend tradition that a music festival, Church Health Center fundraiser and all about building community through music. The ninth annual festival got underway on Friday night, September 4th with a Block Party on the Cleveland strip in the Crosstown area. A special Rock for Love brew, Rocket #9 was crafted by Memphis Made Brewing and debuted at the Block Party, plus music on several stages, a dunk tank, and food trucks made for a rollicking beginning for a rocking weekend for a great cause.

The 19th Annual Vintage Affair: A Toast To Life featured an elegant dinner, late-night dancing to Al Paris & The Heartbreakers, and a spectacular auction. Girl on the TrainPaula Hawkins

Despite the flaws and plot holes of Girl on the Train, Paula Hawkins’ debut bestseller, I could not put this book down. I even liked the ending, despite its hokey reliance upon hackneyed plot devices. As other reviews have noted, this book is ripped from the same twisty, fast-paced page as Gone Girl, and the comparisons are many. If you weren’t able to read this book on the beach this summer, Girl on the Train could easily become the quick read on the porch this Fall. The book is deliciously entertaining despite its misstep in overcomplicating the narrative with plot holes filled with schlocky misdirection.

Girl on the Train is like Hitchcock’s Rear Window set on a London metro rail. Rachel, the Flynn-esque main character with a penchant for flagrant self-destruction, spends her mornings taking the train to work, catching glimpses of their mundane lives from their back porches and kitchen windows. After obsessing over a particular cottage and its inhabitants one day, she realizes that not only is an affair taking place, but she might have witnessed a murder, too. Between bursts of alcoholic fits, the main character inserts herself into the police investigation of the missing and possibly murdered adulterous woman.

While the self destructive patterns of Rachel, the main character, seem tired since Gillian Flynn has cornered the market on female self-hatred, Rachel’s rash curiosity is. How many times have you inserted yourself into a situation, only to have it backfire in your face? (Well, I have, at least.) There are many truly cringeworthy moments when Rachel simply must have one last look. You’ll want to turn the page even though you know uncomfortable moments are inevitable on the next page.

That being said, might I suggest a moratorium on cheap, “gotcha” twists in novels like these, or at least better curveballs that don’t rely so heavily on drunken, unreliable narrators who may or may not have their stories straight? Without spoiling too much, Hawkins didn’t even need to distort the facts to hide a very satisfying twist. The movie has a fantastic ending even without a big reveal, and the narrative trickery she employs to get there is frustrating. While I wouldn’t pass up this book because of a few poorly envisioned red herrings, I won’t be so kind to any future books that follow the same path.

Girl on the Train will become a movie in 2016 starring Emily Blunt, Haley Bennett, and Mission Impossible vixen Rebecca Ferguson. The hardback is still available at Booksellers at Laurelwood.

On August 27, Paragon Bank hosted an art reception for Memphis Oral School for the Deaf (MOSD) at its Saddle Creek Banking Center. This is the second year Paragon has hosted artwork from this particular school. The bank has hosted student artwork from a different school each month since the location in Saddle Creek opened. This was the first reception Paragon has held for MOSD and for elementary student artists. The artwork consists of butterflies and caterpillars, which reflect a MOSD tradition of releasing butterflies on the graduation of their preschoolers transitioning to other elementary schools.
