    sublimation

    Are you wondering if you

have all of the tools and

    accessories you need in

    your sublimation toolbox?

    Because of the wide

    range of sublimation

    products that currently

    exist and the numerous

    new products that areconstantly being

    introduced, there are also

    several tools and supplies

    that are necessary to

make sure that you get the

    best results from

    sublimation. The

    comprehensive list of

    items below may be

    available through your

    distributor or readily

    available at your local

    hardware store!Teflon sheets

Polytetrafluoroethylene sheets, usuallycalled Teflon sheets, are the most com-monly used accessory when sublimat-ing. The sheets accomplish a couple ofthings. First, they protect the pads on

the press from wear and tear, and theyprevent ink transferring to the pad andthe heat platen. Secondly, they will pre-vent items from sticking to the roof ofyour heat press. Many sublimation sub-strates will be sandwiched betweentwo sheets of Teflon in the heat press(FIGURES A and C). Teflon sheets tendto become sullied with ink over time, sowhen sublimating two-sided substrates, like apparel, substitute butcherpaper/scratch paper for the Teflon

to avoid transferring old ink onto thesubstrate.

Butcher paperThis paper is a substitute for Teflon

sheets and is also referred to as end rollpaper or kraft paper (FIGURE B). Endroll paper is the paper left over from alarger spool of paper used in newspa-per production and web press produc-tion. If you ask your local newspaperabout end-rolls, you can usually pick upa significant quantity (several hundredfeet in some cases) for little or no cost.End roll paper has no dyes or printingon it and absorbs stray ink and moisturefrom the transfer. Often used when sub-limating apparel, it is good for one-timeuse only and must be thrown away afterremoving the items from the heat press.

    Nomex pads/felt pads

Nomex pads and crafting felt are usedto help absorb and distribute pressurefrom the heat press. Rigid substratessuch as ceramic tiles and ceramic orna-ments are sublimated with these padsunderneath to help prevent cracking orbreakage. Specifically for the ceramictiles, the pads help wrap the transferaround the beveled edges of the tile,

ensuring that the transfer makes directcontact over the entire sublimatablearea of the tile (FIGURES A and C). Beaware that some crafting felt can bemade from man-made material andmay not be designed for high tempera-ture use. Be sure to use cotton or apad made specifically for sublimation.

    Soft paper towels

Like a Nomex pad or felt pad, softpaper towels have similar benefits forother substrates. Several layers of soft

paper towels under the substrate helpdistribute the pressure of the press tothe substrate and capture stray ink fromany over printing or bleed edge(FIGURE D). For example, when subli-mating a one-sided substrate such asDyanSub aluminium that has a softer, more impressionable poly coating, thepaper towel distributes the pressureevenly, allowing the transfer to makedirect contact over the entire substrateunder very light pressure settings, help-

ing to avoid a scratchy or mottled finishafter sublimating. The variety of papertowel purchased should have no textureor printing on it. When pressing withlight pressure, the same layers of papertowel can be used repeatedly. You willwant to replace the paper towel with anew sheet when sublimating double-sided products to avoid getting previousink on the substrate.

Decorating Apparel from theDecorating Apparel from the

experts who careexperts who careEveryone thinks its so easy to produce a transfer to decorate a

garment, well its not. A vast amount of time, investment, research and knowledge goes into producing the correct kind ofinks which are needed for this market place.

More often than not customers require inks to be PVC andPhthalate free, so our in-house research and development teamhere at Target Transfers do their best to accommodate this. Asan example, our team has just produced a vinyl that is both PVCand Phthalate free and is tacky enough to hold small detail. Wehave called this Cad Cut Sportsfilm (TM) Extra, it comes in 31different colours and has been extremely well received.

There are various ways a garment can be decorated, here atTarget Transfers in Braintree, Essex we manufacture to the high-

est standards with a helpful, friendly and knowledgeable teamwho do their best to please. We produce transfers by using 4processes: Digital, Screen and Litho printing and Cad Cut mate-rials (other systems are available on the market).

If you think you might be interested in this and would like aquote we would need to know: the quantity and colour yourequire, what substrate it will be adhering to, we would needgood quality vectored artwork (which we would look at to see iftonal work or gradient is within the make-up of the piece todetermine a process) then we can give you lead times andprices. The rest is up to you. Once the transfers have been pro-duced we can send them out for a next day delivery.

In this current climate we believe if you can actually do thingsyourself to keep your costs down then all the better as we cansell you the cutters for the vinyls, the print and cut machines forthe printable media and the heat presses to adhere it to the gar-ments or substrates yourself. Alternatively we can do it all foryou. We have a great team with over 20 years experience ofapplying transfers and they can adhere to most substrates on themarket. They have been applied onto car interior materials, wellingtons boots and dive suits to name but a few. If you havea substrate that you just cannot adhere to, please ask us to try itfor you. Testing is very important as materials such as coatednylons/polyesters can have a variation of coatings on them thatcan resist some transfers, but the alternative of embroidery on a

rainproof jacket is not ideal, for obvious reasons, so you wouldhave to give at least two weeks for extensive tests/wash test totake place.

There is such a diverse scope as to what can be achieved: froma transfer to help your business diversify into, from work wear todance wear, Guides to football kits, bags, wellies, coats, hood-ies and even car interiors.

To see what we can achieve come to our showrooms inBraintree or call Susan Ringrose to organise a site visit to showyou our wonderful portfolio. Call her on 01376 557506 toarrange an appointment.

RowmarkRowmark meeting the ever meeting the everchanging demands of laser andchanging demands of laser and

rotary engraving substratesrotary engraving substratesAs the old saying goes: "There's notime like the present..." and there's

never been a better time to be

part of the engraving and marking

industries!Engraving equipment continues to be in high demand... and theapplication/product reach continues to expand. According to2013 industry publication statistics, lasers and rotary engraversremain the top equipment choice among sign makers and

engravers and are used more than any other fabrication method, including sublimation, heat transfer, vinyl cutting, etc. In a recentpolling of about 8500 businesses in the engraving, awards, recognition and personalisation industries, 91% use a laser intheir shop, while 88% use a rotary engraver.

The wide use of laser and rotary engravers among industry pro-fessionals is attributable to product development. An impressiverange of substrates are available today for sign-making andlaser/rotary engraving, meeting a multitude of applicationneeds. Plastic substrates, in particular, are not only a popularchoice for sign-making and engraving based on their ease offabrication, durability and colour selection... but they are also

being used for a much broader range of applications. In addi-tion to signage and award applications, plastic substrates arealso now commonly used in industrial applications, interiorarchitectural design and point-of-purchase displays. In compari-son to alternate engravable materials, engravable plastics offer awider colour selection; they are available in outdoor weatherableand UV stable versions and can resemble the appearance ofother materials in a more fabrication-friendly, lightweight anddurable product. Let's explore the range of plastic substratesavailable to sign makers and engravers today, each with its ownspecial capabilities.

Plastics for tactile or Braille signage

The demand for tactile signage has largely stemmed from

updates in UK legislation, including the Equality Act of 2010 andthe Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), which have becomemore stringent to accommodate those with disabilities, includingthe blind and visually impaired. Both the 2010 Equality Act andthe 1995 DDA are in place to support equal opportunities forthe disabled and to allow the government to set minimum stan-dards to accommodate the disabled. Not to mention the factthat the need is great - out of the total UK population, about20,000 are blind, about 200,000 are registered blind andnearly two million have severely restricted vision. Based on needand continued legal requirements, the tactile signage industryoffers fabricators significant potential business.

Plastic substrates for exterior/industrial applicationsOutdoor weatherability (defined as the ability to withstand exteri-or weathering conditions) and UV stability (defined as the abilityto maintain colourfastness in UV conditions), are commonrequests among sign-making and engraving professionals today.

Outdoor weatherable and UV stable plastics can be used in

applications such as directories and directional signage solutionsfor parks, zoos, university campuses, schools, outdoor shoppingareas and more. These types of plastics also hold up well indemanding high traffic or industrial environments where chemi-cal and fingerprint resistance is important.

    Textured plastics

Another great option for industrial and high traffic signage is atextured substrate to create contrast and an increased chemicalresistant surface, yet remain suitable for engraving. Texturedplastics are perfect for signs that need to stand-out and convey asimple, but important safety message to viewers, such as CAU-TION, STOP or HARD HAT AREA.

Thin-gauge, bendable plastics or magnetic plasticsThough thin-gauge, bendable plastics are not typically used assubstrates due to their low rigidity, they do meet a very spe-cialised need in the trophy, plaque and award markets.Commonly available in metallic finishes resembling the look ofbrass, bronze or metal, these plastics are often wrapped andformed around dimensional objects and are also perfect asnameplates or decorative accents. Some are even magnetic andare great for promotional applications such as vehicle graphicsor business cards.

    Glow-in-the-dark/safety application plastics

That's right... engravable substrates are even being used to pro-

tect and save lives! Safety requirements today call for the use ofemergency signage or messaging in the stairwells and hallwaysof public buildings (including high-rise and office buildings), tohelp occupants escape in the event of an emergency. This couldbe in the form of glow-in-the-dark tapes, decals or even engrav-able plastic. Engravable photoluminescent sheet materials con-tain a chemical compound that glows after exposure to light, noelectricity is required, and they can be fabricated with any mes-sage. Today, to meet the needs of different safety applications, arange of UL-approved plastics are also available. UL(Underwriters Laboratories) is a global safety science companywith over a century of experience in developing standards tomeasure and validate businesses' safety, performance, environ-

mental health and sustainability within a wide variety of indus-tries. UL approval commonly certifies products with a particularsafety rating based on flammability and burn rate testing.

    20 TROPHY & ENGRAVING NEWS October 2013 www.trophex.com

    new printer

DTG Digital release new Viper2DTG Digital release new Viper2

Direct to Garment printerDirect to Garment printer

DTG Digital is well known for its Direct to Garment printers with over

8000 installations to date. In fact globally there are probably more

companies that rely on DTG Digital than any other brand. Now the legacy

continues with the release of the New VIPER 2 garment printer designed

to replace the award winning Viper model that has been an industry icon

    for the past five years.

The new Viper 2 brings all the features like ONE PASS print technology, a through printer conveyor bed for oversized printsand WIMS white ink management from the original Viper but with more.

According to Steve Richardson, CEO of Impression Technology, manufacturers of the DTG digital range:

We wanted to increase the speed and simplify the user interface to make the new Viper2 into something that printers will findfar easier to maintain and operate. With the rise of internet sales, our customer base and their needs have changed, so weneeded to evolve.

Customers want to reliably print single orders through to hundreds. We have worked hard to bring about what we believe is themost rugged printer with far less maintenance at a better price point in the market.

Printers just want to print they dont want to shake cartridges and squeeze bags to manage inks! The new Viper 2 achieves thisby way of some smart but simple engineering. Our DTG manufacturing team have developed a vast number of machines overthe years from a progression of building.

We know what is needed by printers and this is the core difference with DTG Digital and the reason why we are one of themost trusted brands globally. Im very confident that printers will adopt the Viper2 as a breath of fresh air in DTG printing andcontinue the legacy which is the DTG Viper.

The Viper2 brings a number of new features that complement growing internet sales and print for profit markets. An all newgarment platen system entitled the 4-2-1, allows prints to XXXXL oversized garments, two standard garments or four smallerones in one system, as well as an advanced ONE PASS white and colour option with greater laydown of ink. And the patentedWIMS (White Ink Management System) is still retained but with a shorter ink tube length that is constantly pressurised at theprint head - an industry first. Overall colour and print consistency has also reached a new level as well because of the pres-surisation of inks through the entire print path including the print head. Maintenance is almost eliminated with only weeklycleans required; a special cleaning cartridge is also able to be used for shutdown over longer periods.

The Viper 2 is a new printer by DTG Digital and will be available on limited release in Europe towards the end of year. Forfurther information about this exciting machine or to find your nearest distributor contact Impression Technology Europe on+44 (0)1623 861173 or visit the website at www.impressiontechnologyeurope.com.
