It is not native to Bermuda. It is presumed to have arrived in North America from Bermuda, resulting in its common name. This type of grass will resist washing away during the rainy season in late August and September. The fairways are “sprigged” with Celebration sod. because the lake has been shored up on the left. The cart path will now go to the left side and back of the eighth green. Some vegetation is planned behind the green.

Hole#9: tee box moved back, but the green moved forward to make room for the new putting green. Green-side bunkers on right front and left back.

Hole#10: several tee boxes so the hole could be very long or very short. A path was created between the third and fourth tee-boxes for residents of Schooner Village. Green has been elevated with 2 large bunkers: left and right front.

Hole#11: unchanged except for size of green and loss of one of the left bunkers.

Hole#12: the forward tee box (formerly the women’s tee) has been removed and placed on the left side of the lake. The back tee boxes will be boxed off from the road with hedges. The green is very large and the bunkers are different.

Hole#13: three tee boxes, one very far forward; green-side bunker on right and in rear.

Hole#17: tee box moved back a little. Very large green with new bunkers: one on right and one in back. The bunkers in front of the green have been removed.

Hole#18: forward tee box now to right of cart path. Wall in front of green has been redone and the green has been brought closer to the water and lowered. One bunker in front of green. green, there will be a new putting green at the practice range. Due to monetary restrictions, there will be no work on the practice range during this renovation.

Bill Brooks (The Landing’s golf course superintendent), Kipp Schulties (golf architect) and Southeastern Golf Company have been working hard on The Landing’s Golf Course for the past 4 months to revitalize and restructure our golf course. This is some of the work that has been done since

the golf course over the next two months. There is a great deal more to be done. It is estimated that the course will be ready to play by the 1st of November, golf gods permitting.

Grass! Grass! Everywhere! from page 1 TeesAll the tee boxes have been replaced with new ones. There

will be three sets of tee markers for each hole. They will be labeled I, II, and III in white roman numerals against a dark blue background. Members will then choose which tee box is appropriate for them and their handicap. This is in keeping with the “Play Forward” campaign. Play Forward is an USGA program and is a national initiative that is intended to speed

PGA of America and the USGA. It has been enthusiastically received by PGA Professionals and the golf community.

For those players where the back tee (I) is too daunting, a tee marker will be set up closer to the green for the average handicap player (II) or closer to the green for higher handicap player (III).

For example on the sixth hole, there will be a tee-box at the very back of the lake (I) which will make the tee shot

at the original site for the average golfer and there will be third tee box forward (III) for those who would not feel that they could get over the water.Pump House

The pump house has all new equipment. The pump is a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) which has a 12 inch suction line coming from the lake in front of the ninth green. The pipe is 4 feet above the bottom of the lake to prevent silt and organic material from getting into the mechanism. It is computerized so that amount of water and distribution of water, etc is all controlled by the computer. Also, the timing and amount of water can be controlled through the computer for each green, each fairway and each tee box. See photo.

The CourseListed below are some of the changes have been made on

each hole:Hole#1: the tee boxes are moved back next to the new

putting green. Three Christmas palms are placed to the right of the green near the cart path.

Hole#2: right sided fairway bunker and tree was removed; left front bunker removed; there is a green-side bunker on right.

Hole#3: undulating fairway with catch basin replacing the big hole; green enlarged, extending back toward McGregor and to the right; bunker on the left removed; bunkers on right and behind the green.

Hole#4: tee is moved back and the green is moved left and a little forward, closer to the lake. The cart path has been

We have completed the course work with the exception of some minor drain corrections. We have completed the compilation of the punch list for both the front and back nine’s and the contractor is working on correcting those punch list items. Once this work is for the most part complete, we will begin the cleanup of Parcel 5 and the staging area by the driving range (cul-de-sac by Mariners Cove). Cleaning of the course cart paths and cleaning of street peripherals (gutters, drains, etc.) will start within the next week.

The putting practice green at the driving range will be sprigged this week. The driving range is being readied to re-open for members use beginning September 5th. Notice will be sent and posted. Practice will be limited to the driving range ONLY.

The course is still slated for opening November 1st. We continue to get some heavy afternoon rains and although the opening schedule is anticipated to be unchanged at this time, it is subject to reality – we will post updates if there is any possible change to the date. Contact the golf shop for reciprocal tee times as normal. The normal reciprocal list for May 1st through October 31st is posted in the golf shop and on the web site. If you have any questions, please contact the golf shop. The golf shop is open during the summer and someone will be available for storing or retrieving golf bags/carts as needed.

Order for permitting of the planned new cooking area at Picnic Pointe, which will move the current cooking area out of the existing pavilion building into a smaller pavilion next to the current one. We received the approved LDO from Lee County.

At last update, we were updating bids on the construction due to higher than expected costs on the project, especially the utility connection as the estimates are prohibitively high. Due to cost increases in the pump station portion, we were considering the option of moving forward but completing the restroom portion at a later date, or adjust the budget to accommodate the increased cost. At this time, we still have an issue with the costs exceeding the approved budget to the point where it will require further study and most likely approval from the Board for any additional cost.

The project was scheduled on purpose to be the last scheduled project of the summer to ensure there was no budget issues with the larger projects scheduled before the pavilion (Course, C-Dock, and Dredging). Not only do we have a delay to further research costs, we have now

When we were at beach parties we might contrive to miss the last ferry, so that we could pass the night drinking beer. I didn’t get away with those ‘I-missed-the-bus’ excuses long. Last time I tried it and asked for a ride to the ferry where

school, Fort Myers Beach had a swing bridge, and its tender would sometimes let us ride it while it swung open and shut. But it was worn and rickety, so they would not let the school bus cross it. We would get off on the island side and walk across to the mainland where we would board another bus to get to school. Those of us who remember that old swing bridge invariably refer to the present high elevation bridge as the ‘new’ bridge.”

John and Laura went on to study at the University of Florida in Gainesville, and had academic careers there after graduation. Now semi-retired and living here in Windjammer, they teach part-time: Lauralee as an adjunct professor of English at Edison and John as on-line tutor in English for the U. of Phoenix.

Well it’s been a pretty long off season with the closing of our golf course. There has been a small band of

LMGA faithful playing every Saturday at Hideway Country Club. We wish to thank all members who have been making the event happen each week. Watching the golf course renovation was something to watch, the noise from all the heavy equipment is still in my head. I will say the work that was done was impressive as

to end late in August with the planting grass completed. The course is starting to look like a golf course again. See you all real soon. Two ants sat on the grass watching a duffer dig up the course. One said to the other, “Let’s get on the ball before he kills us!”

Annette Malvin also visited us last week. Earlier in the summer Pat Daniels, Edith Culver and Sugar Keedy got together to work on treats for the fall season. Many of you traveled this summer. The Keedys had a unique experience. They are filming a Disney movie in our little town. “Little Savages” will be out in a few months. The director lived with us for six weeks. What a learning experience. Hopefully everyone is having a good summer and we look forward to gathering for play in November.

vacationing with Ken and Connie Sanville and Peter and Jane Dahlin. They were looking for a winter home, so we tagged along on the last day of our vacation ending up at the Landings. We all fell in love with the Landings. They bought right away. We bought a year later.”

“We didn’t get involved right away because we were still working and didn’t live here fulltime. But since we’d

boating in SW Florida. For a few years, we’d come down for a week or two and spend as much time on the water as we

joined the Yacht Club and became involved. I like to know what’s going on, and I love the camaraderie of the group. Everything is done with volunteers. Mary and I have made such wonderful friends because it’s easy to meet people. It keeps us both busy which we like to be!”

“One of the most important things is that the Yacht Club is not some “highfalutin” group. It’s just a bunch of ordinary folks who love boating. A substantial percentage of the membership doesn’t own a boat at all. They just want to have fun with the group. Mary and I sold our Florida boat last year, but we’ll never leave the Yacht Club. So I’m a Commodore without a boat, and I want to make sure that others know that the Yacht Club is for everybody. You can drive to the cruises or Lunch Bunch; plus there are all those great parties right here at the Landings. I also want people to know that the Yacht Club does good things for the Landings. We support the Marina. We recently donated and built the Marina restroom and shower, and we’re currently in the planning phase of expanding the patio at the Wheelhouse.”

“Well, it’s a four year process to get here – learning something new each year. This year, I’ll facilitate the Board Meetings and serve as the spokesman for the organization. I’m just available to help in any way I can. Really, if you ever need help with this group, you just ask and people step forward. Then you get out of the way and let them do the work! It makes the job easy.”

Thanks to Randy and Jan Perkett and their able assistants Doug and Kathleen Crosby and Don and Marie Pettit for

It’s getting closer, and I’m so excited to get back to Florida! It’s Labor Day

Weekend as I write this article and it will be published in the October HappyLandings. That means I will get to see it in print as I will be returning home in the middle of the month. That being said, many thanks to all who supplied me with information during my absence, especially this month which was loaded with some great information. So here goes…

Sheri Christian and her sister Wendy Bednarcik from Fort Lauderdale ran in the Falmouth Road Race on August 11th. They have run the 7.1 mile race along the scenic coastline of Cape Cod for the last 14 years. Sheri and Wendy were joined by their brother Chuck, his wife Charlotte and Mariners Cove residents Sandi and Dave Marshall for a pre-race Rockette’s line dance. They were joined earlier in the week by sister Amy Lambrecht, from Manassas, Virginia, so it was a special family gathering!

In more travel news, the Amy’s took a little trip out East with stops along the way at Niagara Falls, Lake Placid and ending in Maine to spend a little time with Al and Carolyn Armstrong. Great place, great friends and more lobster eaten than should be legal! Did

They enjoyed a delicious, reasonably priced meal and lots of good conversation. The participants were: Vincie Amato, Pat Benner, Mary Blais, Marian Burbey, Gretchen Howard, Klara Imshaug, Ginnie Knudsen, Carol Milkovich and Carol Robinson. There was much conversation on a variety of subjects but Klara’s stories of living in Norway during the war and the salvation of that country by the generosity of its neighbor, Sweden, were particularly interesting. Gwendolyn’s Café, located on 1st and Lee downtown Fort Myers, is open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week, and makes their own, delicious homemade soups, dressings, and much more. All nine of the Cove ladies would recommend it highly. One last thing before I close, if anyone read the August article you may have noticed that the pictures didn’t match the article, as I sent last years. Yikes, I can only be hopeful that you only like to look at the pictures and didn’t notice. Well sorry ‘bout that, and what really stinks is the article was all about the Amy’s visit to Kentucky, and our boat trip to Madison, Indiana for the 4th of July Regatta. Well, maybe I’ll save that one and use it next July if I’m still doing the article. Maybe this is a sign that someone else needs to step in...Volunteers? Until next time, can’t wait to see ya’ll around “The Cove!!”

Your reporters spent the month of August in our beach front rental

condo in Michigan City, Indiana. In addition to seeing our children and grandchildren, a highlight of our month was a gathering of Trawler people in Saugatuck, Michigan on August 13. The event was organized by Beth and Mike Harding and it included Trawlerites from Indiana, Ohio and Michigan. The entire group enjoyed an excellent lunch at the Butler restaurant.

Cane toads have been seen in Windjammer Village. These toads are highly toxic if ingested by animals. They are not particular what they eat: small rodents, dead or alive, garbage, be sure not leave or throw away any leftovers by accident. This specie was introduced as a method of agricultural pest control. Our deepest sympathy to Mr. & Mrs. Don Davis of Windjammer Lane on the loss of their son Marty Davis. If you received Ed Braid’s e-mail, you can read the article and a poem of “I’m Free.” Happy Birthday wishes to Judi Archdale and Jackie Wagner. I hope you had memorable ones. Anniversary wishes to all. If you are ill, I wish you a speedy recovery and get back to us soon.

Clipper Cove

Clipper Cove has been quiet the past

and our residents are making their way back to Florida by plane, train and car. My husband and I are once again booked on the Amtrak Auto Train that departs from Lorton, Virginia and arrives in Sanford, FL. the following morning. This saves us

holidays to be with our family. Three of our residents have October birthdays. Bob Straubing and Carl Leo share the same date, October 31, and Brud Mulqueen has an October 22 Birthday. Happy Birthday, Bob and Carl and, of course, to my special guy Richard. Because this month has a limited amount of news and the column is brief, I decided to take this opportunity to share some information about The Renaissance Academy of Florida Gulf Coast University. Last season I immersed myself in several stimulating enrichment courses. A sampling of the classes I participated in were: BODY LANGUAGE AND LYING PAST LIFE REGRESSION REINCARNATION VERBAL MARTIAL ARTS OLD AMERICA MONEY THE RELIGION OF ISLAM IPHONE FOR BEGINNERS WHY WE ACT THE WAY WE DO THE MIND OF A PSYCHOPATH PASTEL DRAWING FOR BEGINNERS ROOKERY BAY BOAT TOUR

which you can pick up or look online at www.fgcu.edu/racademy.There is an extensive listing of classes, lectures, courses, life enrichment and travel abroad. There are several locations where classes are held but The Atrium could not be more convenient and the classes are very inexpensive for those of us who are life-long learners. I am also looking forward to our Landings Author/Luncheon series

We will soon be seeing the spectacular colors of autumn, the days are getting shorter, our purple martins have raised their brood and have left for parts unknown and our young ospreys are still

as the seasons pass and we wait to renew our friendships with our Landings community.

As we await the Halloween Holiday and the ensuing candy treats that are an inevitable by-product of this somewhat dubious

Guy Fawkes celebration, we can’t help but think this is a gigantic hoax perpetrated by the dental profession to glean every last nickel from our passion for Mounds Bars, or that oh so delectable sugary taste delight, the inimitable Frozen Snickers. Having said that, and keeping my prized stash of Twinkies and Mallomars from the bride, who only allows one per day, we are relying on the discretion

Marcia and Rick Howard experienced a month of living in the West Greenwich Village of New York City. While there, they spent lots of time with their daughter Kristen and son-in-law Jeff who own a longboard skate shop there. Marcia and Rick have done many of the tourist things such as visiting the Empire State Building, the Guggenheim, the MoMa, the Museum of Natural History, and the Met. They also took in the David Letterman Show and the musical Book of Mormon. One highlight of their visit was an evening sailing cruise on the day of their daughter’s birthday to see the sunset and a full moon by the Statue of Liberty. Although they enjoyed great food and people watching, they will be happy to return to Trawler’s quiet and beautiful setting in September.

At this month’s news, our neighborhood pool should have a sparkling new fence at the east end to keep very young children from taking a header into the canal. This is in keeping with any concerns our Village Grandparents have for making our environment safer for the toddlers who visit, or the frequent older pool goers who tend to imbibe a little more than they should.

And when they do come up, they are quickly sold or rented. On that note we welcome Russell Weintraub who has leased a house on Harbortown Lane for a year and Karrol and Ron Mirenda from Wisconsin who also are leasing on the “Lane” for this winter. We hope to see them all at the monthly pool parties and around the Landings.
