OCTOBER PROGRAM
SHIBORI RESISTS FOR HANDWEAVERS OR KNITTERS
Description Jay reviews his transition from hand
knitter to shibori dyer Tie dye my knitting why not
A lot of sampling was necessary to perfect resists on
loose stretchy knits that didnrsquot behavior like tightly
woven cottons or silks more typically used for shi-
bori
His knowledge of complex resists then lead to refine-
ment of resist dyeing on wovens texturing silk organ-
zas with scouring and further dye work to unlock the
secrets of natural dyes His latest work has involved
use of pairs of mirror image carved boards for clamp
resist dyeing
Jay Rich is a self taught life long hand knitter from Nebraska His textile education
has been informal beginning in childhood with family members and accidental teach-
ers along the way North Dakota winters were cold and textile hand work was a
frequent indoor activity He tried everything
His science background has helped more recent exploration of natural dyes indigo
and eco-friendly dye processes Textile study has included trips to Japan Chile UK
China France and many venues within the United States primarily to study shaped
resist dyeing In 2011 he had the opportunity to study 17th and 18th century mor-
dant printing and organic indigo reduction with Michel Garcia in southern France
He collects resist dyed textiles for study and to guide experimentation His artistic
approach initially uses historical review and scientific exploration which then be-
comes highly intuitive He is a member of the World Shibori Network and Surface
Design Association edits the Omaha Weaverrsquos and Spinners Newsletter and serves
on the Friends of the Robert Hillestad Textile Gallery board Jay will bring his sam-
ples and parts of his textile collection for study and discussion

My Weaving Journey by Carla Ray Sale Co-Chair
I moved to Colorado from the mid-west in 1992 newly married and a new weaver I
pursued the craft slowly taking a few classes from Judy Dittmore in Colorado Springs
while settling into our new community Life got busy as it always does learning a new
job then another setting up a house in south Denver and building a place in the moun-
tains Then at age 40 I become a mother for the first time and life got a little crazier
All the while I tried to weave making things for family and friends Despite my schedule
I felt this need to meet and bond with other weavers Letrsquos face it no one understands
a weaver better than another weaver So I went to a Rocky Mountain Weavers Guild
sale and became inspired by the artisanship of the things for sale and decided to go to a
meeting It wasnrsquot love at first sight I felt the time could be better spent weaving than going to a meeting but the yearn-
ing for the weaving camaraderie tugged at me I finally join the Guild in 2004 and weaving became a real passion I soon
saturated all my family and friends with handwoven goods and started to do arts and craft shows to sell my inventory I
tried selling at a few consignments shops along the way too
About 5 years ago I became involved in the Guildrsquos annual fiber arts sale first working with the sale set up then as co-
chair of the sale It always amazes me to see all the beautiful things that hang on the display racks of the sale and I get
excited to see the event come together every year The committee works hard meeting several times throughout the
year attending to every detail We all work well together have our jobs and know exactly what needs to be done Itrsquos a
wonderful group and I applaud everyone on the committee for their hard work and dedication So the next time you
hear someone say the annual sale is not worth the trouble or the sale is not necessary for our Guild think again I would
not be a member today if I had not gone to a Guild sale some 8 years ago and I would suspect there are several other
members with a similar experience The Guild sale is the best way to be visible within our community and letrsquos face it
we need new perhaps younger members to continue the long traditions of this wonderful Guild I hope everyone partici-
pates helps or shops at our sale It supports everyone in our Guild

Study Groups
ROOKIE Rookies now Rookies Out of Bounds (ROB) is a group comprised of weavers
from a variety of levels from beginner to advanced We meet the first Wednesday
evening of each month rotating the meeting location among the membersrsquo homes Each spring we set up a challengestudy for the coming year This year (2012-13)
we decided to use the triad colors on the color wheel using a structure of your choice to produce napkins
for an exchange In order to participate in the exchange you will need to commit to the project at our Sep-
tember meeting In order to keep the napkins somewhat consistent we are suggesting the use of 102 cot-
ton If you donrsquot have any 102 then try using a yarn as close as possible from your stash We donrsquot want a
lack of 102 cotton to stop you from participating The napkins should all be a finished size of 14rdquox14rdquo You
will also receive a draft work sheet at the September meeting to be completed with your napkin The ex-
change will take place at our May 2013 gathering

My Weaving Journey by Carla Ray Sale Co-Chair
I moved to Colorado from the mid-west in 1992 newly married and a new weaver I
pursued the craft slowly taking a few classes from Judy Dittmore in Colorado Springs
while settling into our new community Life got busy as it always does learning a new
job then another setting up a house in south Denver and building a place in the moun-
tains Then at age 40 I become a mother for the first time and life got a little crazier
All the while I tried to weave making things for family and friends Despite my schedule
I felt this need to meet and bond with other weavers Letrsquos face it no one understands
a weaver better than another weaver So I went to a Rocky Mountain Weavers Guild
sale and became inspired by the artisanship of the things for sale and decided to go to a
meeting It wasnrsquot love at first sight I felt the time could be better spent weaving than going to a meeting but the yearn-
ing for the weaving camaraderie tugged at me I finally join the Guild in 2004 and weaving became a real passion I soon
saturated all my family and friends with handwoven goods and started to do arts and craft shows to sell my inventory I
tried selling at a few consignments shops along the way too
About 5 years ago I became involved in the Guildrsquos annual fiber arts sale first working with the sale set up then as co-
chair of the sale It always amazes me to see all the beautiful things that hang on the display racks of the sale and I get
excited to see the event come together every year The committee works hard meeting several times throughout the
year attending to every detail We all work well together have our jobs and know exactly what needs to be done Itrsquos a
wonderful group and I applaud everyone on the committee for their hard work and dedication So the next time you
hear someone say the annual sale is not worth the trouble or the sale is not necessary for our Guild think again I would
not be a member today if I had not gone to a Guild sale some 8 years ago and I would suspect there are several other
members with a similar experience The Guild sale is the best way to be visible within our community and letrsquos face it
we need new perhaps younger members to continue the long traditions of this wonderful Guild I hope everyone partici-
pates helps or shops at our sale It supports everyone in our Guild

from a variety of levels from beginner to advanced We meet the first Wednesday
evening of each month rotating the meeting location among the membersrsquo homes Each spring we set up a challengestudy for the coming year This year (2012-13)
we decided to use the triad colors on the color wheel using a structure of your choice to produce napkins
for an exchange In order to participate in the exchange you will need to commit to the project at our Sep-
tember meeting In order to keep the napkins somewhat consistent we are suggesting the use of 102 cot-
ton If you donrsquot have any 102 then try using a yarn as close as possible from your stash We donrsquot want a
lack of 102 cotton to stop you from participating The napkins should all be a finished size of 14rdquox14rdquo You
will also receive a draft work sheet at the September meeting to be completed with your napkin The ex-

is the nominating committee Without a President-Elect we have no way to get the board together for
next year If you can help on the Nominating Committee please let me know via an email (or phone call)

Any questions contact Bev Kajko 303-916-9613 or Annie Scherer 303-963-5450
