Molescroft Primary School in Beverley has been awarded the British Council’s prestigious International School Award in recognition of its work to bring the world into the classroom.

The International School Award is a badge of honour for schools that do outstanding work in international education, such as through links with partner schools overseas. Fostering an international dimension in the curriculum is at the heart of the British Council’s work with schools, so that young people gain the cultural understanding and skills they need to live and work as global citizens.

Molescroft School’s international work includes an annual two week long International Festival, which this year saw the children exploring’ Russia including Curling,

Circus Skills as well as dance and costume. The Commonwealth Games provided the school with a stimulus for linking Internationalism and Sport. Other projects included links with India and Germany. A project called “My Life in a Box” has been used as a basis for forming international links and friendship. Students from Bremerhaven visited to introduce the pupils to the science of off-shore wind turbines. On hearing the news that Molescroft Primary School had received the Award, Michael Loncaster said: I announced in assembly that once again we had been honoured with this award, the first time being in 2005. It is a reflection of the tremendous enthusiasm of the staff and the pupils, which on many occasions brings the world to Molescroft. I must however thank the parents. They financially support the International fortnight every year.

International Guests from Germany and The NetherlandsThree students to work at MolescroftEsther Protong from Lemgo and a student from Bremerhaven will be joining Georgina Smeekes and Savannah Leigh Vermeulen from The Netherlands for work experience placements

at Molescroft. I know our children will make these international visitors most welcome as they spend one or two weeks with us in October.

It is always a great opportunity for our children to learn about life on the continent.

BRITISH COUNCIL INTERNATIONAL AWARD SUCCESS FOR MOLESCROFT... continuedTo work in a community, which clearly values and recognises its place in a global community and wishes to enable its youngest citizens to understand and respect the diverse cultures of the world, is extremely rewarding. John Rolfe, from the British Council, said: ‘The school’s fantastic international work has rightfully earned it this prestigious award. The International School Award is a great chance for schools to demonstrate the important work they’re doing to bring the world into their classrooms. Adding an international dimension to children’s education ensures that they are truly global citizens and helps prepare them for successful future careers in an increasingly global economy.’

2013/14 saw more than 500 schools receive International School Award accreditation. This includes a wide range of schools from a variety of different backgrounds and areas across the UK. The British Council hopes to build on this success throughout 2014

The Award is now available worldwide in countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Lebanon, Cyprus, Pakistan and Nigeria as part of the British Council’s Connecting Classrooms programme. Around 5000 International School Awards have been presented to successful schools in the UK since the scheme began in 1999.

The ISA encourages and supports schools to develop:

• An international ethos embedded throughout the school

• A majority of pupils within the school impacted by and involved in international work

• Collaborative curriculum-based work with a number of partner schools

• Curriculum-based work across a range of subjects

• Year-round international activity

• Involvement of the wider community

OUR CHILDREN THEIR FUTUREOur children will work and live in a very different world to the one we live in now. It will be even more globalised and we need to prepare them for it.

Our International Links continue to thrive

R FRIENDS ASSOCIATION EVENTSNew for the Autumn TermI know the Friends will be eager to receive your support for the Christmas Fayre (it is only 2 months away!) and the pupils’ Christmas Cards Project. The initial planning meeting for the Christmas Fayre is on Tuesday 30th September at 6:30pm in school. On Friday 3rd October all the children will have the opportunity to design their own Christmas Card as they did last year. Their design will be professionally made into a card which can be ordered in sets. It is also possible to have the design transferred onto mugs etc. The purchase of any item is entirely optional but proved to be a very popular fund raiser with parents/carers last year.

On Friday 17th October the Friends invite you to a Race Night with Pie & Pea at Hodgson's in Beverley. TICKETS ARE ONLY £9 each and includes a Disco after the last race. This has got to be great value.

LONGCROFT SHOWCASEHull City HallAs advertised in September, Longcroft School is once again organising a showcase of dance,

drama and song for its partner schools. Each school has 8 minutes to showcase an arts performance. We are taking the members of the Y4 to Y6 Urban Dancers and the Y5/Y6 Routines Dancers.

Rehearsals are well advanced and I know the children will stun us with a spectacular performance as they did last year with ‘Game On’ reflecting a range of popular computer games. Parents of the children participating should have returned the permission slip by now and the costume requirements. We are waiting for

the release of tickets from Longcroft. Wednesday 15th October 2014 at 7pm is when the excitement begins.

The children will need their costumes in school during the day of 15th October as they will be performing two dress rehearsals to the rest of the school.

The children will also travel from school to the City Hall by coach for an afternoon rehearsal. The children will need to take a packed tea with them.

NEW FOOD TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS OF THE NATIONAL CURRICULUM

Remember the Friends’ Association is hoping to fund the creation of a fully fitted kitchen for all our children to use.

NEW SEWING MACHINE CLUBStarts on Tuesday 7th October at 12:30 for Year 6Mrs. Koder leapt into the fray last Summer to take a lead on the Theatre Club Costume Production line. Together with a valiant team of supporters the mammoth task of dressing over 100 children was complete. At the time children were showing interest in dress making

skills and the use of a sewing machine.

We have bought a brand new sewing machine and are now ready to launch a new club initially for Year 6 pupils.

Mrs. Koder will be teaching the children how to use the sewing machine, but also how to make and use patterns, cut out, pin hem and sew. .... and maybe to help out with next year’s costume requirements for our production of .... now I can’t announce that just yet!

Sew ... a needle pulling thread.

School Meals are Excellent Value.

Any Parent/Carer of Grandparent who would like to come to school and enjoy dinner with their children is welcome to do so. Just telephone the office before 10.00 am. on or before the school day* to reserve a meal. Please bring photo I.D. with you. Adult meals cost £3.30. Children’s are £2.30. It is excellent value, and by educating children away from a diet of crisps and processed food we are together building a lifetime of good eating habits and healthy hearts.

DINNERS MUST BE PREPAID and money must be sent to the classroom in a labelled envelope. PLEASE DO NOT SEND LOOSE MONEY. Each room has a post box through which letters and money (providing it is in a labelled sealed envelope) can be sent to the school office.

Meals are advertised on the website and there is always the salad with two wraps option.

Children can self serve salad, vegetables and fruit salad and can have second portions.

* Please note; there are occasions e.g at christmas during the show week, and on sporting tournament days when it is not possible to accommodate extra adult guests at lunchtime. The same applies on the first week in September when the priority is to reestablish systems for our pupils particularly our new starters.

Mrs. Jenny Wilson our new admin officer has the unenviable task of dealing with school meals and payment thereof. Jenny has been looking very closely at the system and is in the process of making a number of changes which will make the payment system much more responsive. Meanwhile I thank parents/carers for their patience as Jenny wades through the accounts. All those who are owing money from last year have now been contacted. Some of you may be surprised to discover you are in credit. Our new system will hopefully be launched in November.Meanwhile, children in the Foundation Year and KS1 now all receive free meals. Meals for KS2 pupils remain at £2.30 per meal. However to support parents our discount price for 5 meals in one week will be maintained. So if a child takes five consecutive meals within one week i.e. Monday to Friday, the cost for a week’s dinners will be £9.20. I hope this continues to be a help to parents.

If a week has less than five days such as the first week, each meal will cost £2.30 but in weeks of 4 days we will do a special 4 days for £6.90. This includes weeks when we take children out on a visit. In summary, by taking 5 meals in one week, the fifth meal is free (or the fourth in a four day week).

R HARVEST FESTIVALUPDATEA chance to give thanksWe are again to hold a special Harvest Festival Assembly on Monday 6th October. I once again invite pupils to bring some gifts of fresh fruit or vegetables to form a display in the hall. A couple of apples or a cabbage for example will be more than acceptable. This will form a visual basis for our thanks for the harvest we so often take for granted. At 3.00 p.m. on Wednesday 8th October a special market will be set up on the South Playground where our Y2 children will be selling the produce to parents/carers. Prices will be set competitively in comparison with local supermarkets. Any remaining food will be made into soup by Y2 which will be sold on Friday 10th October 2014. Please note the change of date from Thursday to Friday. All money raised will go to this year’s Charity Fund Raising effort (November).

After publication of the September Newsletter I received a letter from one of our Lifestyle Groups “Best Foodbankers Forever” who are Harriet Miller, Grace Weerakoon and Katie Percival.

They were very keen and very convincing of the need to support the Beverley Foodbank. Of course this is a most valuable charity and service in Beverley. I publish the list of goods that they collect and distribute and will be delighted to receive them as harvest gifts and send them to the Food Bank.

R Annual Charity Fund Raising CampaignLast year the children raised a staggering £4028.04Most of you will be familiar with our Annual Charity Fundraising Appeal. This period matches our Citizenship Week and invites the pupils to consider how they may help causes in need. Towards the end of October the children will have the opportunity to complete forms in order to organise special events outside teaching hours or perhaps organise a stall. Last year the children raised a staggering £4028.04, particularly in view of the economic situation.

The Pupils’ Charity Appeal is one of the main events in the Molescroft Primary School calendar. Not only does it achieve the obvious aim of charitable giving it succeeds on other fronts too. Firstly the children develop their organisational skills and team work. The standard last year was amazing with pupil teams arranging and presenting an array of shows with self-assured professionalism. Secondly the relationship and bond between pupils and staff develops as the pupils manage to cajole teachers into participating in events …… possibly out of their comfort zone. Thirdly pupil’s talents are displayed and shared and frequently discovered. There are more than a few emotional moments during the fortnight.

I do hope therefore that Parent/Carers will continue to value this very special time in school. The pupils are reminded however that this is not supposed to be a raid on parents’ purses. The pupils themselves are to make a sacrifice here and there from

their pocket money to support the events they wish and can afford to attend. It is certainly not expected that children attend every event.

In response to some parents representations, the period of fundraising has like the last three years been reduced to 7 days and pupils can only organise one event and/or a stall and/or busking.

I have also maintained the reduced number of show slots to just one per day. Consequently the shows selected will not be on a first come first appointed basis but will be those for which the child organisers have demonstrated the greatest organisation, ingenuity and planning. Some events can be however organised at lunchtimes.

Busking will feature from 3:20pm - 3:45pm at the Y2/Y3 entrance.

As before, teachers will support the children but the children will be responsible for their own organisation. Some children wish to organise activities which occur out of school hours. In this case they will need to secure the support of a Parent/Carer to ensure their safety.

Those wishing to organise a stall or a game such as a lucky dip will be able to do so at a special Charity Fayre on Monday 17th November from 2 p.m. to 4.15 p.m. The hall will be open to Parent/Carers also wishing to support the children’s fund raising efforts.

The full programme of events and activities will be published in a separate letter. The children will nominate the charities to be supported for consideration by

the School Council. The grand total and chosen charities will be announced during the final assembly on Friday 19th December. In addition on this day everyone is invited to come to school in fancy dress and to pay £1 for the privilege.

The first donations to the Charity total will be the money raised from the sale of Harvest produce and soup.

The Pupils’ Charity Fayre will be organised on Monday 17th November 2014

In addition, on Tuesday 2nd December at 6pm there will be a special winners’ concert featuring performances from the children’s various talent shows. Parents/Carers will be most welcome.

PARKINGVery ImportantPlease note that the yellow markings outside our school are LEGALLY ENFORCEABLE and local council officers have and will hand out parking fines.

As outside all schools, traffic can be congested particularly at 3:30 p.m. In the interests of all our pupils’ safety we ask that those collecting children by car, park away from the school and walk to the school gates. It is important that the line of vision for those crossing the road, particularly children, is protected at all times. Now that we have our crossing patrol back I am sure parents would not wish to see his work compromised. So please do not park any where near him on any day and not just when there is a strange man in a yellow jacket stood in the street. I am grateful that most parents avoid parking in the cul de sac. Over 250 children use this route as an exit and lives are at risk if drivers are having to manoeuvre in this space. Your co-operation is much appreciated.

IN ADDITION I ask parents to be considerate of our neighbouring residents. Please don’t park across driveways and please be very careful on St. Leonard’s Road. The result of parking on both sides of the road has led on occasions to a situation whereby the service bus, and on one occasion an ambulance, could not get through.

Please can parent/carers also inform other drivers who may be collecting their children of the regulations and requests.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING

What absence means to your childA message from the East Riding CouncilIf a child is consistent at gaining 90% attendance it sounds pretty good but what does it mean?90% attendance a year means they are missing the equivalent of:

• ½ day of school missed every week• 4 weeks of school missed a year or• 1 whole year over the child’s school life

Research by the DfE suggests that a child absent from school for 17 days each academic year equals a whole GCSE grade drop in achievement.

What is the impact?Even a few days absence can impact on a child’s progress:Children with less than 6 days absence = 91% achieved at least 5 GCSE’s Whereas those with more than 12 days = 36% achieved at least 5 GCSE’s

So, 90% is not as good as it first seemed.

Please help your child reach their maximum potential by ensuring they are at school every day. If your child is ill, please contact the school the first morning of absence. Medical evidence will be requested for any absence due to illness five days or more. If your child needs time off to attend a medical appointment, where possible try to arrange these outside of school hours. Absences for other reasons will only be authorised where parents can show the Headteacher exceptional circumstances exist. Headteachers cannot authorise holidays in term time.

If you have any concerns regarding attendance please do not hesitate to contact the school.

90% attendance actually equates to

missing a whole year of schooling.

AUTUMN TERM PROGRAMME 2014 Beverley Children’s Centres Tel: 01482 880066 Term-time sessions from Monday 8 Sept – Friday 19 Dec

Beverley and surrounding villages

Let’s get healthy! Beverley Children’s Centres have got a range of sessions which support you and your family to get healthy and stay healthy – whatever stage your family is at! New for September: Our monthly healthy lifestyles in pregnancy sessions cover how to keep you and your bump healthy from when you first discover you are pregnant, and the centre is also hosting Pre and Postnatal exercise classes to stay fit both before and after birth. The community group My Baby Can Dance provides the opportunity for you and your toddler to keep active, with dance, movement and music in a fun environment, while our new Let’s Get Cooking explores basic cooking skills and planning healthy tasty meals on a budget. And of course active play is a vital part of all our regular sessions on your child’s journey through the Children’s Centre – from tummy time in Baby Massage and our baby play sessions, through to outdoor and soft play, tunnels, ride-ons, and parachute games in Let’s Get and community groups. For more details on all sessions, both at the centre and outreach, how to book, and any charges for community-led sessions please see the programme over the page.

Annual satisfaction survey It’s that time of year again! We need your views to help us to improve access and shape services for all our families. Please spare a couple of minutes to let us know how satisfied you are with Beverley Children’s Centre. We will be asking you to complete a short survey at all our sessions during September, and also sending the questions electronically. Thank you to everyone who has shared their thoughts so far.

Beverley Children’s Centres need you! We are looking for more parent volunteers to help around the centre and support staff in sessions. Volunteering can be rewarding in many ways, such as gaining experience and skills for career or personal development. If you think you will enjoy working with children, then contact Louise or Leanne for more information.
