Dear Alpha Alpha Members,

Our program year is off to a great start.

In appreciation:

Thanks to Margie Lovett-Scott and Faith Prather for the illuminating and thought-provoking program on October 4 about ways to recruit, retain, and actively involve chapter members. A special thank-you to Margie for developing and producing the recruitment video shown at the October meeting. The video can be accessed at https://youtu.be/ga820sztgac.

Thanks also to Lori Burch for sharing how Mail Chimp is being used to provide regular chapter updates between publications of Newswheel, and to Pam Eberhardt who shared a packet of documents she and Linda Kotwascollected to use as promo materials with potential new members.

New membership recruitment process

Our leaders at The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International are promoting a new procedure for attracting new members. We will be attempting to incorporate this method this year. To that end, an ad hoc committee on the recruitment process has been established, to be chaired by 1st Vice President Betsy Balzano and Membership Chair Linda Kotwas. The group will offer recommendations for our consideration by the May meeting. Please consider joining this committee to help determine how our chapter will proceed with recruitment in the future.

Active involvement

We have an active, effective chapter that presents at least three learning sessions each year as well as two awards sessions, in addition to our annual initiation/installation meeting. A lot of preparation is required to present these meetings—which provides an opportunity for many of us to be actively involved. If you aren’t already a member of a chapter committee please refer to the “How shall I serve” list on page 4.

Active involvement allows each of us to get the most out of our membership and keeps our chapter strong. This, in turn, propels us into a positive future of learning together and providing $7,000.00 in scholar awards to deserving education majors each year.

I hope to see you at our November 2 meeting to discuss ways to build more inclusive environments. Leading the discussion will be Dr. Muditha Halliyadde, adjunct faculty member at The College at Brockport and former Legal Director of the Sri Lankan Ministry of External Affairs delegation to the European Union & United Nations. The registration form is found on Page 7. Also at that meeting we will have our annual Pound Auction to support the DKG World Fellowship Fund. Please consider bringing a ‘mystery’ one-pound package wrapped to attract bidders, then bid on one or more package. THANK YOU!

Let’s learn and grow together.

Judy

HELP WANTEDThe Scholarship and Awards Committee along with a newly formed fund raising subcommittee are considering various fund raising projects. One of these involves the possibility of members donating items that could be sold on ebay (eg: paintings, lamps, tablecloths, collectibles, sets of dishes, jewelry, etc.). Before proceeding with this idea, we are scouting our members to see if anyone is experienced in selling items on ebay and would be willing to get involved in helping with this endeavor. Please contact Bridget Bishop, Rosemary Callard-Szulgit or Monica Cosgrove (585 201-1505) if you are interested in this and are willing to share your expertise.

Input for Holiday LetterAs you know, one Alpha Alpha tradition is to have the chapter president send a letter to members in advance of the December holidays seeking financial support for chapter initiatives or other agencies which are identified by members during the November chapter meeting. This year the Awards and Scholarships Committee is recommending that the holiday letter include a request for donations to support the Rochester Strand of our scholar awards. If you have another recommendation please bring it up during the discussion of this item at the November meeting.IN ADDITION –Your Executive Committee is recommending that we all consider making contributions to support our scholar awards programs whenever we want to honor or memorialize someone. Those who do so and the person being remembered will be listed in the program distributed at the June Awards Breakfast.

Society Keypin

The keypin is the emblem of membership in The Delta Kappa Gamma Society, International, and members are expected to purchase the keypin.

We are all supposed to wear the pin to Chapter and other meetings within DKG, and it can be worn at other times as well.

You may be unaware that DKG pins are supposed to be returned to one’s chapter eventually, since only DKG members are allowed to wear them.

A form is available that you can sign and put with your other jewelry so that others know how to dispose of your DKG jewelry if you are unable to do so. To receive a copy of this form contact Membership Committee Co-Chair Linda Kotwas at [email protected].

For your information, key pins are sold by the Society and can be accessed athttps://acgreek.com/greek/list.php?cat_ref=1 .

The pictured laurel leaves symbolize the distinction which those who wear this pin have achieved. Below the letters is a cup representing knowledge.
